Episode 507 - Richard Sparks - Richard Returns to Share His Next Project, to celebrate news about The Schoolmaster skit and Rowan Atkinson's creative licenseRichard SparksOne morning in 1979 I got a call from an understandably excited Rowan Atkinson.“John Cleese just called. He's asked me to be in his new charity show – and can I do The Schoolmaster?”Er, yes.I'd written The Schoolmaster for Rowan the previous year, for a revue at the Hampstead Theatre (Rowan with Elspeth Walker and Peter Wilson). John and his co-producer, Martin Lewis, had seen it; and a year later, Rowan and I were backstage at Her Majesty's Theatre, meeting John and other members of the cast of The Secret Policeman's Ball.Rowan went on stage an unknown, with his gown and clipboard and pen, and came off a star. The Schoolmaster became his signature piece, the encore of his live shows. Eventually, he got tired of doing the same old routine and wrote another (ruder) version, generously giving me half the royalties.By that time, I'd cut my teeth on various TV shows, from HTV (Wales) to ITV (Southern and Central) to the BBC. I'd also written some stage shows (reviews, original plays, and adaptations of Goldoni comedies), and done a lot of freelance script editing. In 1992, I was hired by Columbia Picture Television to work with Blake Hunter and Marty Cohan, the creators of Who's the Boss?. My wife and I moved with our young daughter to her parents (converted) garage and we've lived in Los Angeles since.I've written a number of libretti for operas, almost all for the LA Opera – some original pieces, some translations from German or Italian. My writing partner, the composer, Lee Holdridge, was – in a way – once G.R.R. Martin's ‘writing partner' in that he composed the scores for the TV series Beauty and the Beast, for which Martin was a script writer.I'd been a hard-core RPG gamer for years when the idea for these books just fell out of the sky one morning, and I started writing. The anticipated sequel to Richard Sparks book, “New Rock, New Role,” has just been released.   “New Rock, New Realm,” is a captivating tale that will enthrall lovers of epic fantasy. Told with his customary wit, Richard Sparks' skillful storytelling weaves a tapestry of adventure, mystery, suspense and emotional depth—with plenty of comic moments spicing up events as they progress.   Memorable characters, imaginative settings and challenging quests all combine to make the New Rock series an unforgettable addition to the genre. Richard describes the books as high adventure spiced with low comedy.Shortly after surviving—against overwhelming odds—their epic quest in New Rock New Role, a mysterious ghost ship arrives, carrying a cryptic message for them. Setting sail full of good intentions, they are soon embroiled in the eternal struggle between the forces of good and the forces of evil. The heart stopping action is interspersed with humor making it a ridiculously fun and addictive read. The idea for the books stemmed from Richard's love of gaming – something he's turned to in his later years.  Born in England, and a graduate of Oxford University, Richard started out as a writer of stage plays, comedy revues and TV, for such shows as Not the Nine O'clock News. Rowan Atkinson performed his Schoolmaster sketch in John Cleese's The Secret Policemen's Ball, and he has a host of other TV credits. On being hired by Columbia Pictures TV, Richard moved to Los Angeles.  He has written libretti for several new operas composed by Lee Holdridge, produced by the LA Opera, as well as writing new English versions of German and Italian classics.   His lyrics have been recorded by talents as diverse as Dom de Luise, Vanessa Wiliams and Plácido Domingo.  https://richardsparks.com/  The Douglas Coleman Show VE (Video Edition) offers video promotional packages for authors. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year is Splash, the first release from Touchstone Pictures, the late film label from Disney as it aimed to create a space for more adult fare. Splash was an immediate hit for the studio, one that defined romantic comedies and fantasies for the 80s, and features an unforgettable score from the legendary Lee Holdridge. Lee is the winner of two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Daytime Emmy Awards, and garnered 18 Emmy Award nominations total, plus two Grammy Award nominations. Lee's work for television and film has spanned more than fifty years for productions including East of Eden, the Beauty and the Beast series from the 1980s, and Moonlighting. In fact, one of his most enduring pieces of music was for ABC's long-running One Life to Live, the late soap opera, for which he won two Daytime Emmys. On this episode of Notably Disney, Lee discusses with host Brett Nachman his career and composing contributions. Feel free to reach out to Brett via Twitter/X @bnachmanreports, subscribe to the podcast, and send your feedback to notablydisney@gmail.com New episodes of the podcast debut on the first and third Tuesday of every month.

It's alive! The Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast Top 10 has been brought back from the dead! The last time I did a show like this was back in 2018 when I presented my Favourite Western Tracks Of All Time. I wanted to make the Top 10 and ongoing series but only a short month later, I went on an 8-month hiatus. I never thought about resurrecting the Top 10 show when I returned, however, I did have one last show planned out, which I found in a playlist in my digital music collection. That was in January and was planning to premiere this show on Valentine's Day but I lost my voice and couldn't record the show in time for the February 14th deadline. Eventually, my voice came back to me and I managed to get this one upload eight days after the Hallmark Holiday. So, welcome back to the Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast Top 10 and I'm looking for suggestions on other Top 10 shows. I'm clear out of ideas right now. Post them in the comments below or send an emial. In the program today, I'm going to play for you my Ten Favourite Love Themes Of All Time and two honourable mentions. SPIRIT ANIMALJONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL by Neil Diamond (Columbia, 1973)There were alot of self-help manuals popularized in the 70's; I remember gifting my mother the book “Your Eronneous Zones” (but that's another story)…. My acting teacher in college based her syllabus on Eric Berne's “I'm Ok, You're Ok”. But one of the biggest New Age parables making the rounds was Ex-Aviator Richard Bach's Jonathan Livingston Seagull, the story of an anthropomorphized Christ-like Seagull, who has to fly off from the pack to find his true self.It was a zeitgeist sensation, and spawned a movie with this soundtrack by the immortal Neil Diamond. Maestro Diamond is currently in the middle of a career renaissance - his biographical musical A BEAUTIFUL NOISE  is playing on The Great White Way, and although he struggles with Parkinson's he continues to work on new music. No one was bigger in the 70s, and although the 1960s Neil Diamond that I loved, the Brill Building song plugger who wrote and recorded Cherry Cherry, You Got to Me, and Solitary Man had seemingly transformed himself into a borscht belt crooner, there was no denying his powers of voice and composition, no matter how cheesy the venue (The Jazz Singer?)I chuckled ironically when I pulled this tape from the pile, anticipating mounds of Velveeta. But now, listening for the first time, I am moved to tears. (This is probably because all my youthful cynicism has given up the ghost). It's a beautiful musical meditation produced by Tom Catalano, and arranged by Lee Holdridge, and Neil's voice soars, aloft on chords of longing. Indeed, the album out-grossed the movie by 10 million dollars, and garnered the 1974 Grammy for Best Original Score, demonstrating that although the radio-controlled gliders representing the flying birds in the film might have been fake, Neil's inspiration was not.

Few big budget studio films since the 1970s exemplify the trichotomy of Luis Puenzo's 1989 historical drama / romance adventure / political treatise masquerading as pulp OLD GRINGO. The eagerly anticipated adaptation of Carlos Fuentes' lauded 1985 novel “Gringo Viejo” (which took him 20 years off and on to complete), and from the director of the equally acclaimed 1985 Oscar winning film THE OFFICIAL STORY starred Jane Fonda, Gregory Peck and Jimmy Smits in a three-person-point of view narrative which brought together an American school teacher, a General in the Army of Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution, and aging legendary journalist / novelist Ambrose Bierce (a fictional version of him anyway) in the final days of his life … . The film took a long and winding road to the screen, premiered out of competition at the Cannes film festival - where it was booed, suffered a delayed then incomplete release in the U.S., and ended up as one of the most critically lambasted box office disappointments of the year. But then again so did other films which have since gone on to become essential cinema - among them John Frankenheimer's SECONDS (also booed at Cannes), David Lean's DOCTOR ZHIVAGO - a huge critical piñata when it first opened, and others from FANTASIA and BRINGING UP BABY to BLADE RUNNER and THE THING - all of which were not box office / audience hits upon their initial releases, but which grew in popularity over the years. Does OLD GRINGO deserve such a place in cinema history? We don't know. But we've always felt it was treated incredibly unfair by critics of the day who failed to notice what was really going on below the surface - among the many subtextual themes it's analogy to the Iran-Contra Scandal of the day and more. We also believe that, like SECONDS, BLADE RUNNER et all, it will eventually find it's audience appreciative of it‘s multi-layered cinematic brilliance and bravado, ... which is kind of why we're here in general. ;) ______________________________________________________________________________THE MOVIE SNEAK PODCAST is part of The GullCottage/Sandlot - a film blog, cinema magazine, growing reference library and online network "Celebrating The Art of Cinema, ... 1977 · "Loca Escapada a Las Vegas" - Peter Ivers - Main Theme 1982 · "Turno de Noche" - Burt Bacharach - That's What Friends are For 1984 · "1,2,3, Splash ..." - Lee Holdridge - Love Theme 1985 · "Cocoon" - James Horner · Theme from Cocoon 1986 · "Pisa a Fondo" - Thomas Newman - Bucket of Ice 1988 · "Willow" - James Horner - Willow Theme 1989 · "Dulce Hogar a Veces" - Randy Newman - End Title · I Love To See You Smile 1991 · "Llamaradas" - Hans Zimmer - Show me your firetruck 1992 · "Un Horizonte muy Lejano" - John Williams - End Credits (With The Chieftains) 1994 · "Detrás de la Noticia" - Randy Newman - The Newsroom 7-00PM 1995 · "Apollo XIII" - James Horner - All Systems Go - The Launch 1996 · "Secuestro" · James Horner - The Kidnapping 1999 · "EdTV" - Randy Edelman - Streetwalkin' Ed 2000 · "El Grinch" - James Horner - The Shape Of Things To Come 2001 · "Una Mente Maravillosa" - James Horner - Closing Credits 2003 · "Desapariciones" - James Horner · The Long Ride Home 2005 · "Cinderella Man: El Hombre que no se dejó Tumbar" - Thomas Neman - Cinderella Man 2006 · "The Da Vinci Code" - Hans Zimmer - End Credits 2008 · "Frost Nixon: El Desafío" - Hans Zimmer - Watergate 2009 · "Ángeles y Demonios" - Hans Zimmer - 160 BPM 2011 · "El Dilema" - Hans Zimmer y Lorne Balfe - End Credits 2013 · "Rush" - Hans Zimmer - Lost but Won 2015 · "En el Corazón del Mar" - Roque Baños - The White Whale Chant 2016 · "Inferno" - Hans Zimmer - Life Must Have It's Mysteries 2018 · "Han Solo: Una Historia de Star Wars" - John Williams - Adventures of Han

Lee Holdridge was our guest speaker at the ASMAC luncheon on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. Lee spent his early years in Costa Rica, beginning music studies on the violin at the age of ten with Hugo Mariani, then the conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. At fifteen - now determined to be a composer - he moved to Boston to finish high school and study composition with Henry Lasker. Later, he moved to New York to continue his music studies and begin his professional career as a composer. While in New York, he wrote chamber works, rock pieces, songs, theatre music and background scores for short films. Holdridge’s successes in New York came to the attention of Neil Diamond who brought him to Los Angeles to write arrangements for Diamond’s forthcoming albums. A string of gold and platinum hits followed, which led to Diamond and Holdridge collaborating on the film score for “Jonathan Livingston Seagull.” To learn more about this ASMAC luncheon, please visit: http://www.asmac.org/lee-holdridge-luncheon-november-19-2008/
