The Brain Behind the Buy: AI, Emotion, and Modern Sales Strategy - Paul Larche

Your brand is speaking to your customers' brains every single day. The real question is: which brain is actually listening? In this episode, John Golden welcomes Paul Larche to the Sales POP! podcast for a wide-ranging conversation that bridges neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and real-world selling strategy in ways you won't hear anywhere else. Larche, author of The Divided Brain, explains how AI-powered personalization exploits the same survival instincts that once kept our ancestors alive in the wild—and what that means for the way we build brands, craft campaigns, and close deals in today's hyper-connected world. He walks listeners through his Brand Value Canvas, a three-pillar approach to messaging that connects with buyers on the rational, emotional, and subconscious levels simultaneously, giving your communication depth that most competitors overlook. The episode also tackles the darker side of algorithmic influence, from the exploitation of cognitive bias to the quiet erosion of critical thinking, and delivers actionable advice on how leaders can adopt AI with intention and strategy rather than blind impulse. Download the episode now and start selling the way the brain actually buys.

Paul Larche is a media pioneer, author, and business strategist with over four decades of experience in broadcasting and brand communication. As the founder of Larsh Communications, he built five radio stations from the ground up and was inducted into the Ontario Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. His latest book, The Divided Brain: Why Customers Buy (and Why They Don't), translates cutting-edge neuroscience into practical business strategy—helping leaders understand how human psychology truly drives buying behavior. In this episode, Paul breaks down the evolutionary wiring behind our decisions, why fear is such a powerful motivator, how media exploits confirmation bias, and what business owners must understand if they want to communicate effectively in today's AI-driven world. On this episode we talk about: The “old brain” vs. the “new brain” and how they shape buying behavior Why fear is a stronger motivator than reward Metacognition: thinking about your thinking How confirmation bias fuels modern media and marketing The dangers of pattern-seeking and confabulation Why understanding psychology is more valuable than mastering marketing tactics Top 3 Takeaways: 1. Your old brain runs the show. Most decisions are driven by survival wiring—seeking safety, status, and simplicity. Marketing that speaks to this system wins attention. 2. Awareness creates leverage. You can't eliminate bias—but you can recognize it. Metacognition (thinking about your thinking) is a competitive advantage in business and life. 3. Psychology outlasts platforms.Marketing channels change. Algorithms change. Technology changes. Human nature doesn't. The entrepreneurs who understand this will always have an edge. Notable Quotes: “The old brain runs the show.” “Fear kept our ancestors alive—that's why it's so powerful.” “You can't fight your wiring, but you can understand it.” “AI can bypass your new brain and speak directly to your old brain" Connect with Paul: Website: https://paullarche.com (free PDFs) Book: The Divided Brain  Travis Makes Money is made possible by HighLevel – the all-in-one sales & marketing platform built for agencies, by an agency.  Capture leads, nurture them, and close more deals — all from one powerful platform.  Get an extended free trial at gohighlevel.com/travis Learn more about your ad choices.

With over four and a half decades of experience in broadcasting, branding, and digital marketing, Paul Larche has built a remarkable career at the intersection of innovation, leadership, and community impact. Beginning as a young radio announcer in Northern Ontario, he steadily advanced through on-air and executive roles. In the 1990s, Paul became General Manager of Telemedia Network Radio in Toronto, where he oversaw national broadcasts for iconic franchises like the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays. Driven to push the boundaries of traditional media, Paul founded Larche Communications Inc., transforming a visionary startup into a major media force with five radio stations and a thriving branding and marketing agency. Under his leadership, the company pioneered forward-thinking strategies in both radio and branding, culminating in successful strategic sales to Rogers Media and Bell Media. Decoding How We Think This isn't just a book about branding—it's a guide to the hidden operating system behind human behaviour. The Divided Brain introduces a simple yet powerful metaphor rooted in neuroscience: our minds are driven by two distinct but interlocking systems—the fast, emotional Old Brain and the slower, rational New Brain. Every decision your customers make, every instinct your team follows, and every reaction you encounter in a negotiation or pitch stems from the constant tension between these two mental gears. Once you learn to spot which brain is in control, the fog lifts. What once seemed irrational becomes understandable. Sudden client reversals, hesitations in sales calls, or why one brand sticks while another flops—it all starts to make sense.   Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

Jordan Hart tells the story of discovering  CKUA Radio.  He asked, “what album am I listening to?”  Told it was a radio station.  CKUA!  His reply was  “There’s no radio station that cool”  With this podcast Jordan has come full circle. Back to CKUA Radio. In 2019,  Alberta singer/songwriter Jordan Hart embarked on a 100-day straight busking challenge in Toronto, through thunderstorms and snowstorms he played on. Every Sunday, 100 percent of the money he raised was donated to L’Arche Canada.  In L’Arche, people with and without intellectual disabilities live, work, learn, and grow together. L’Arche demonstrates that when persons with intellectual disabilities take their place at the table, they contribute to a more just, compassionate, and vibrant world for all.                                                                                                                                                                                     The Momentum from his daily busking also culminated in a sold-out show at the Great Hall in Toronto and his career streams also increased by over a quarter of a million. As a featured artist, his work with Lucky Rose on the song ‘’Lost’’ greatly increased his profile. Jordan has released a fine EP called Only Pieces Of The Truth and with it a confirmation in each of the 7 tracks that he’s destined to become a much bigger artist. Much Bigger. Add to that discovery that  Jordan is also a natural storyteller.  He talks about life on the streets busking. Being turned down completely by the young woman he wanted to spend his life with. About shooting his video for Freedom with a small group of actors with Down Syndrome. Have a listen. See if you agree that he’s destined to shine!!

When we are young, we need the guidance of mentors. We never really outgrow that need for guidance, but at some point, a change must take place if we are to reach maturity. Instead of always being the one who is guided and mentored, we become the ones who provide the guidance and mentoring to others. We stop always looking for the adult in the room because we have become the adult in the room. My guest today was recently awakened to the fact that she is very much at the threshold of that transition. Sarah Pelrine is a bona fide young adult Catholic, but one who is quickly moving away from the “young” part of that description and instead stepping into what it means to be an adult Catholic, a mature disciple. Professionally, Sarah works in the Archdiocese of Chicago where she applies her training in both theology and in business to help parishes undertake organizational transformations to better pursue their mission of evangelization. Personally, Sarah is relatively recently married but previously spent a great deal of time in her formative twentysomething years living and working in L’Arche communities. Together, we will talk about what we need and what we don’t need to be well-formed, engaged, and mature people of faith.

L'Arche Boston North Brings Back the Longest Table in August to Kick Off Restaurant Week

L'Arche Boston North is making plans to bring back the Longest Table in August, a kicking off the Greater Haverhill Chamber's Restaurant Week with a boost for local eateries.Last year's plans were scuttled by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the group that helps adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities is bringing it back with only minor changes. L'Arche Boston North Executive Director Jennifer Matthews, a guest on WHAV's morning program, says Haverhill's restaurant community is tightknit and supports one another.“Going into the pandemic, and knowing how hard hit our restaurant communities were hit across the world, Haverhill's resiliency is really rooted in the people who own these restaurants, and the people who work in these restaurants. Everyone came together to support one another, and you see it every day on social media. You see people who own one restaurant in another restaurant just complimenting the chef or taking pictures and making sure people know what an amazing meal they had. It's something you don't see in other places. It's something I've never encountered in any other area. I think Haverhill is really special. So, this year we would like to thank our restaurants for participating, so 20% of the ticket sales will go back to participating restaurants,” she says.L'Arche Boston North provides housing and day programs, including a small business producing homemade hummus.Matthews says the Longest Table will be laid out Thursday, Aug. 19 and helps the restaurants show off their cuisine and invites people to come together.“The longest table takes place on Wingate Street and it's a joint effort between L'Arche Boston North and the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, and the event kicks off the Restaurant Week for the City of Haverhill. We transform Wingate Street, in a very short amount of time, into an outdoor dining room. We have a very long table, so the first year we did it in 2019 the table was about 250 feet and we had about 186 people seated at the table, and we worked with all of the local restaurants to help cater a family style meal for the guests at their table,” she explains.Matthews says this year, instead of selling individual tickets to the event, plans right now are to sell tickets by tables of six for $600, which includes food, a gift bag and entertainment. In view of the pandemic, she adds, this is a safer way to have the Longest Table. Details are still be worked out, but those interested may learn more at larchebostonnorth.org.Support the show (https://whav.net/become-a-whav-member/)
