In this heartfelt episode of ALL Together, Liz Macdonald and Michael Soto sit down with Bryce and Sara Cook, parents of two gay sons and founding members of ALL (Arizona LDS LGBT). After their sons came out, Bryce and Sara felt called to speak up, build bridges, and foster community. They hosted support groups in their home and organized an annual conference for LGBTQ+ individuals and families navigating faith and identity. Their efforts laid the foundation for many of the other groups and events we've highlighted in previous episodes of the podcast. Bryce and Sara share the powerful story of their family's journey and discuss how parents also have their own “coming out” process—one of unlearning and rediscovering what it means to love like Christ.

In this ALL Together episode, Liz Macdonald and Michael Soto sit down with Pastor Stan Mitchell, a Christian pastor with a powerful journey of faith and inclusion. Growing up in a fear-based, exclusivist Christian tradition, he gradually expanded his understanding of God's love and eventually played a role in his Nashville church's decision to fully embrace LGBTQ+ members in 2015. Now, he travels extensively, helping Christian families and churches navigate faith and LGBTQ+ acceptance.Pastor Mitchell discusses the wounds that religious teachings can cause—not just for LGBTQ+ individuals but also for those who uphold exclusionary beliefs out of fear and conviction. Through Jesus's parables and stories, he illustrates the need for compassion, listening, and standing in solidarity with the marginalized. He challenges allies to move beyond passive support, reminding us that if we're not feeling the impact of the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community, we may not be standing close enough.

Today, we're thrilled to welcome therapist and podcaster Valerie Hamaker. In his book Falling Upward, Franciscan priest Richard Rohr uses the metaphor of a container to elaborate on what he calls “the two halves of life.” The first half of life, he says, is for building the structure of the container; the second is for filling it and sharing from it. This concept has been foundational for us in our faith journey over the last 10 years, and today with Valerie, we delved into how everyone's faith evolves over time, the necessity of structure and identity in early faith development, and the importance of embracing complexity, depth, and paradox as we grow. One of the tricky parts about faith evolution is that not everyone's faith evolves in the same way; and because so many of us have built our lives on or around our faith, it can be hard when we see loved ones' and family members' beliefs diverge significantly from our own, in any direction. This is a real area of expertise for Valerie in her own practice, and we found her insights on managing complex relationships and spiritual growth super helpful—she helped us see that genuine curiosity can be crucial in navigating complex conversations around beliefs, and explained why we can, and should, let go of any belief that engenders fear. Valerie is a licensed therapist specializing in marriage and couples work. She owns a private counseling practice in Kansas City, Missouri, and is the host of the Latter Day Struggles Podcast, where she helps Latter-Day Saints understand and navigate their spiritual growth. This conversation is packed with practical advice for anyone experiencing or supporting others through faith transitions. We hope you find Valerie's insights as enlightening and encouraging as we did. And with that, we'll jump right into this conversation with Valerie Hamaker.Note: the research Valerie refers to in this interview was done by Liz Macdonald.

In this part three (of a four-part series) Valerie and her therapist colleague Liz Macdonald delve further into the complexities of navigating faith disaffiliation among young adults in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their conversation today focuses on the unique challenges faced in families who belong to "covenantal religions", including the anxiety and isolation that both parents and their evolving young adult children can feel when facing the eternal threats of noncompliance with church covenants. Liz and Valerie delve into the double-bind that people might feel in "covenantal" religious systems (such as LDS and Judaism) where some may feel that they must choose between the crucial human task of authentic spiritual self development and requirement to make and keep certain belief-based covenants in order to be allowed connection with God and family for eternity. Friday's final episode of this series (available via subscription) delves deeply into a highly respected model of human growth and development and explores a possible correlation between the degree of psychological (under) development and one's inability to tolerate the faith expansion process of loved ones. Latter Day Struggles

Subscriber-only episodeIn this part two of a four-part series, Valerie and fellow therapist Liz Macdonald continue in their profound exploration of the turbulent journey families face when young adult children disaffiliate from the LDS Church. This episode delves into the heart-wrenching conflicts that arise in some LDS homes when young adults begin the normative process of spiritual self definition. Liz's research brings to light some young adults' perceptions that their parents' certainty of LDS worldview shuts down any meaningful connection and dialogue and leads the young adult child feeling unseen, unsupported in their normative growth wrestles, and conditionally loved and accepted. The emotional toll on both parents and their emerging adult children navigating faith is extreme. I was wearing black Audacity, white time.is, black metadata and red background noise. I was walking outside Hogwarts. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. Hold your ground, hold your ground. Children of Radio, of the Internet, my siblings. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of podcasts fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of written word and streaming video, when the age of podcasts comes crashing down, but it is not this day. This day we fight! For all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Podcasts of the Internet! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for YouTube, I can tell you I don't have video. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people who hate the audio format. If you listen to this podcast now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will tell you that you probably made the right decision. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. There was once a podcast episode called the Monday Thursday Power Hour Ep 2: Back at It Again at the Krispy Kreme (ft. Liz MacDonald). It was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise it could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life. It had such a knowledge of the dark side that it could even keep the ones it cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. It became so powerful, the only thing it was afraid of was losing its power, which eventually, of course, it did. Unfortunately, it taught its apprentice, Ep 3, everything it knew, then its apprentice killed it in its sleep. Ironic. It could save others from death, but not itself. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Howdy hey campers. In this episode, we say things. Some things happen. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and maybe you'll learn a little something on the way. Just remember, the journey is more important than the destination, so don't stop believing. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

My friends Eric and Liz Macdonald share their family story of their son Matthew coming out as gay following his mission in Mexico, navigating that road with he was at BYU, their personal revelation that Eric and Liz received as they stayed close to Heavenly Father to get direction on how to love and support their son. It is a very tender and powerful story. They also talk about the difficult road our LDS LGBTQ members and principals that apply if one steps away to keep the family circle together. They also talk about their positive interactions with their ward, local leaders and a visiting authority during a recent Stake Conference. I encourage parents and local leaders to listen to their story to get better ministerial insights. Thanks for sharing your story. You are all awesome.
