Amanda and Sarah go goblin mode for this episode about another little fucker and a Hollywood true crime case. Sarah talks about the connection between the Ebu Gogo and the Homo floresiensis on the Indonesian island of Flores. Amanda heads back to the flapper era with the first of a two-part series about Clara Phillips, aka the Tiger Woman. Other subjects covered include quitting coffee, being nude under a trench coat, and roasting America's Next Top Model.  Recommendations: Amanda recommends (kind of) the graphic novel The Low, Low Woods and the 1978 medical thriller Coma.  Sources: The University of Alberta (Are hobbits real?) Ghouls are exploring the fictional and real-life towns on fire. Gabe explores Carmen Maria Machado's Low Low Woods which tells the tale of Shudder-to-Think, Pennsylvania, and the terrible secrets brewing there. A story where sinkholes and towns on fire pale in comparison to the horrors of generational trauma. Kat covers the real-life Silent Hill inspiration, Centralia, PA. Surprisingly, the fact that it's actively been on fire since before the Ghouls were born is not the most interesting thing about this town. We cover the horrors of company towns, the lawless new world, the Molly Maguires, and the importance of unions! Morbid romance cast! Our dear friend Kailey Tedesco joins us with some killer picks in Carmen Maria Mechado's "The Low Low Woods" a graphic novel set in a burning Pennsylvania town. She also chose Olivia Rodrigo's album "sour" and Gregorio brings the beer with Workhorse Brewing's "Bonfire Nights" smoked lager. Trauma is the main course in this cast as the graphic novel deals with notions of inherited trauma and the act of giving consent to remember. We love having Kailey on and hope you all check out her many gorgeous books of poetry as well. Cheers!

Had a great time with this quick read: The Low, Low Woods. A weird tale set in the crags of Pennsylvania in a town not unlike Centralia. Lovely stuff. I didn't rate it but it is a solid 4 of 5 for me ~ with potential depending on how much more if this series there ever will be. There's something in the woods... Shudder-to-Think, Pennsylvania, has been on fire for years. The woods are full of rabbits with human eyes, a deer woman who stalks hungry girls, and swaths of skinless men. And the people of Shudder-to-Think? Well, they're not doing so well either. Two literary authors discuss their new horror-tinged graphic novels: Laura Marks on her blood-soaked 19th-century tale Daphne Byrne and Carmen Maria Machado on her spooky small-town story The Low, Low Woods. The authors talk about the connections between memoir, screenwriting, and comics writing, the rewards of working with a graphic artist on interpreting their work, and the space for ambiguity and suspense that the graphic novel form offers for horror stories, in this warm-hearted reading and discussion.  (Recorded November 16, 2020)
