We're back in the world of Bootleg Bond, navigating the vast number of rip-offs and spoofs that tried to cash in on the 007 craze. In this episode, Cinema60 goes to Italy to scout out Agent 077 – the ever forgettable Eurospy with the ever changing name and face. Marvel as he shoots men, slaps women, skis mountains, flies helicopters, saves the world from nuclear meltdown and remains wholly unengaging throughout. These six utterly disposable entertainments aren't really the point here, though. The real meat of episode is Bart & Jenna's philosophical inquiry into the true nature of knockoff cinema and what these films mean to their largely accidental audience. When Carl Smith’s eleven-year-old daughter started getting into classic rock like Joan Jett, she asked her dad how he wanted to be remembered. Carl had run his own digital agency nGen Works for twelve years, but his daughter’s questions about legacy made him realize his true passion was boosting other leaders into the stratosphere. “If you’re a leader, you probably didn’t go to school for that,” he says and gave himself the goal of figuring out how to help people in leadership roles unlock their potential. The first Bureau of Digital event was a couple of dozen digital shop owners talking about what worked and what didn’t. And, as Carl says, “We fell in love with each other.” Their mission was to provide community to the digital space. But from the beginning, it was clear that some folks weren’t in the room. In 2012, there were only a handful of women and BIPOC people at the table, and gender diversity became a bigger issue as the Bureau took off. Carl shares that women often didn’t sign up for owner-focused events, sticking with ones designed for operators. After another gender-unbalanced event, Margaret Lee, who ran Google Maps for nearly a decade, pulled him aside for a chat. She suggested they offer a women’s leadership camp. His response? “Yes, ma’am.” It turned out to be a half-solution. At one event, he was approached by a participant who said, “White women’s leadership camp is going great.” When he flinched, she reminded him, “It’s going to be work, Carl.” He knew he had to figure out where to go from there, but he couldn’t do it on his own. Enter Project Inkblot. Co-founders Boyuan Gao and Jahan Mantin work with organizations as coaches to build diversity—the real stuff, not trendy hashtags—into their operations. For Carl, it meant taking a step back and asking them to lead the Bureau of Digital through a process of designing Beyond Diversity: an event, a fund, and a mindset that is honest about why BIPOC people and women often feel sidelined in digital communities and is working to change that. “When there are people who can do it correctly because they’ve lived it, I need to get the hell out of the way.”Bureau of Digital has experienced an explosion of growth since January 202—membership is up a mind-boggling 750%—and while membership hadn’t been a priority before the pandemic, the Bureau’s 500+ members have changed that. They have a robust and active Slack channel full of people sharing frustrations and solutions on topics as diverse as navigating the Paycheck Protection Program to how to hire remotely. Carl regularly mines the Slack channel for topics to write about in the Bureau’s newsletter. And while the Bureau may have started in a single room, Carl recognizes that online communities are here to stay. They’re not planning anything in-person until 2022, and “We’re going to have an online equivalent to the in-person events as well.” Score one for accessibility. Most of all, Carl wants leaders (especially those without formal leadership training) to rid themselves of the mindset that being in charge means they need to know everything. He says there’s “this fear that someone will find us out,” speaking to the imposter syndrome often found at high levels. But not knowing is part of building the right team and the right culture. “Your job is not to contain a team behind a fence; it’s to create a place that is a magnet,” he says. Horatio G. Spafford was a successful lawyer and businessman in Chicago with a lovely family - a wife, Anna, and five children. However, they were not strangers to tears and tragedy. Their young son died with pneumonia in 1871, and in that same year, much of their business was lost in the great Chicago fire. Yet, God in His mercy and kindness allowed the business to flourish once more.On Nov. 21, 1873, a French ocean liner was crossing the Atlantic from the U.S. to Europe with 313 passengers on board. Among the passengers were Mrs. Spafford and their four daughters. Although Horatio had planned to go with his family, he found it necessary to stay in Chicago to help solve an unexpected business problem. He told his wife he would join her and their children in Europe a few days later. His plan was to take another ship.About four days into the crossing of the Atlantic, the French ship collided with a powerful, iron-hulled Scottish ship. Suddenly, all of those on board were in grave danger. Anna hurriedly brought her four children to the deck. She knelt there with Annie, Margaret Lee, Bessie and Tanetta and prayed that God would spare them if that could be His will, or to make them willing to endure whatever awaited them. Within approximately 12 minutes, the ship sank beneath the dark waters of the Atlantic, carrying with it 226 of the passengers including the four Spafford children.Anna was floating on a piece of debris and was rescued by a life boat. They were picked up by a larger boat and taken to Wales. From there, Anna sent a telegram to her husband informing him of the devastating news.Mr. Spafford booked passage on the next available ship and left to join his grieving wife. With the ship about four days out, the captain called Spafford to his cabin and told him they were over the place where his children went down. While on the journey he wrote the words of a beloved hymn.When peace like a river attendeth my way,When sorrows like sea billows roll,Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,It is well, it is well with my soul.When I read this story I was reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul found in Philippians 4:7 - “And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, shall keep your hearts, your minds through Christ Jesus.”There is a peace that comes from God that surpasses understanding. Even when we can't possibly understand the circumstances of life, there is a peace that God can give. This peace protects our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.Can I ask you a question: Is it well with your soul? Life is full of ups and downs, mountain top experiences and also the valleys.  We battle temptations, trials, obstacles, stress, physical illness, financial hardships, difficulties in our relationships, and pressure on every side.Yet, in spite of it all, we can experience a peace so beautiful that it causes us to recognize that it is well with our soul. It is well between me and God.Paul talks about this amazing peace we can experience. It is a peace from God. It is a gift. Peace is not the absence of problems. We can experience God's peace during our problems.It's also a peace with God. Because of Jesus' death and the salvation it brings, we now can have peace with God. Our relationship has been restored. Margaret Lee, Director of UX Community & Culture at Google, began her career before the Internet was really a thing. After majoring in architecture, she decided she didn't want to be an architect, then stumbled into technology by accident. As she describes it, her career has almost been a process of elimination, of trying different things and figuring out what did and didn't work for her. From early days as a design practitioner to becoming a design lead and a manager, she never planned to be a leader—or really saw herself as one. Her journey has been an organic one, shaped by her willingness to volunteer for new roles and get outside her comfort zone. In this episode, host Travis Neilson interviews Margaret Lee, a UX director at Google, about her journey to leadership and explorations of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Lee shares personal vignettes—including the career stories of her immigrant parents, and stewarding the opinionated nature of her young daughter—to discuss her own path to becoming a “reluctant leader.” Listen in to hear how Lee found a healthy balance between meeting performance expectations at work and being her authentic self. On culture fit in the workplace“We talk so much about culture and the importance of culture, but if we have a fixed perspective on what that culture means, then we're just perpetuating the same problem of lack of diversity. When we talk about culture fit, a lot of times what we're talking about is the culture that we're comfortable with… and that doesn't lead to diversity of thought, that just leads to reinforcing what already exists.” On listening to learn “We usually just listen to fix the situation because we're hired to fix things. But when we're doing that, all we're doing is collecting information to hone in on a solution, but you can't do that if you don't understand the situation. And that's where the listening to learn comes in.” On making more team connections “I don't think anybody is just one dimension. We have our dominant tendencies and then we have areas that we should be stretching into. And if everyone is willing to stretch thirty percent beyond their natural abilities, we'll make a lot more connections with each other.” Do you have a burning question for a designer at Google?
