We're back from Black Rock City, and we miss it already. If you miss it too, or you missed it altogether, here are some sounds and sentiments of being there. BRC is filled with amateurs, people doing it as a labor of love. When things go wrong, we celebrate it as a glorious opportunity to adapt, or simply as things going the way they go. When the going gets tough, and it's tough going in the world these days, spaces like BRC allow for joy, mourning and reflection. Spaces like BRC are practice grounds of possibility for doing things together, and things going wrong — sometimes wonderfully, sometimes devastatingly, often whimsically wrong.Caveat Magister is the resident philosopher of Burning Man. From his work with founder Larry Harvey and the underground art scene, he writes books, hosts adventures, and refutes reality.Motorbike Matt produces Burning Man's webcast, and helped create the Mars Rover Art Car and the Black Rock Observatory. He works in deserts around the world, and works it in the Black Rock Desert.Kbot is a strategist on Burning Man Project's Communications team. When Candace found Burning Man in 1996, she jumped right in to help the media tell the whole story of Black Rock City, not just the sensationalism. She also jumped right into culture jamming, twisting iconic characters, from Cacophony Society's santas to public pranking as porn clowns, and playfully pushing people in immediate theater. She also brings the transformative power of interactive art to public spaces around the world, as part of a non-profit We Are From Dust, and she's working to have all people feel welcome at Black Rock City. If Black Rock City were a ship, Charlie Dolman would be its skipper. The SS BRC is already taking shape in the dry docks of our collective effort, and at some point later this summer it will slide into the dusty seas of northern Nevada. As the event operations director, Charlie leads a crew of leaders responsible for pretty much all aspects of city infrastructure, and for planning for just about every operational contingency, from fire and rain to, who knows, a downpour of frogs. On fire. If you see him on playa he's the fast-moving, soft-spoken guy with three radios, a cell phone and a pager (yes, a pager!). In this rare interview he sits still long enough to talk with Stuart about the people making BRC greener, less commodified, and more inclusive. He also passes Stuart's quiz about being a Brit in the US, and defends marmite as a comestible.Burning Man Project Staff: Charlie DolmanBurning Man Project's CEO Introduces Charlie Dolman (2012)
Sotheby's is exhibiting and auctioning the work of 180 Burning Man artists from around the world. More than a third are women, and more than a third are people of color. The offerings are a mix of the sculptures, painting and photographs traditionally displayed in galleries, as well as experiences, mutant vehicles, and NFTs. It's a collaboration and a collision. It's an experiment in bridge building with an institution historically known for overt commodification. It's a vehicle for appreciating art based on intrinsic aesthetic value. It's a nod to artists. Stuart talks with Kim Cook, Director of Creative Initiatives for Burning Man Project, the bold guide of this collaboration for advancing a values-based culture, and embracing the beastly art marketplace while being pro-artist, anti-racist, and taking not taking ourselves too seriously seriously.Boundless Space… The Possibilities of Burning Manhttps://journal.burningman.org/boundlessspace/
As part of a series on Radical Inclusion, Andie talks with artists Fab Five Freddy and Rachel Sadd about diversity in and around the Burning Man world. They discuss tokenism, bridge-building, and how people with open sensibilities can widen the path for those who have not felt welcomed before. In today's episode, I speak with Eamon Armstrong. Eamon is a public speaker, writer, podcast host and former Creative Director for Fest300. His podcast, Life is a Festival, is one of my personal favorites. Eamon's interview style is something I have been taking notes on for myself since the start of theEWpodcast and I highly recommend listening to Life is a Festival if you haven't already heard of it. On his show, Eamon interviews festival leaders and deep thinkers from around the world including Jamie Wheal, Marian Goodell, Jordan Hall and many others. Eamon also hosts the Psychedelic Therapy podcast through Maya Health, where he interviews guests around the topic of, you guessed it, psychedelics and therapy. Initially, the intent of this conversation was to look at what aspects of festival culture might be amplified in society today to help us navigate this difficult moment that is 2020. It's no secret that currently in America, we have lost our sense of community and it was my intention in this conversation to gain insight from Eamon's depth of experience at festivals, places where community is key, to find out what could be done to get that sense of community back. This didn't exactly happen. As you'll hear, the majority of this conversation is spent talking about mental health. And it's a great conversation that covers both Eamon's and my own personal histories with mental health struggles, the role of psychedelics in recovery, the importance of actually doing the work and much more. About two thirds of the way into this discussion, we do manage to get the conversation back on its original tracks and all goes just fine, until it doesn't. At one point towards the end of the conversation, I attempt to make a point that I had been excited to make as I prepped to speak with Eamon. In fact, during my prep I had imagined the flow of how our discussion might go and this particular point that I attempt to bring up was supposed to be a big deal. But, it falls flat with Eamon. At this point, we were creeping up on the 90-minute mark which we had initially scheduled as our time limit. If you make it this far into the episode, you'll hear as I try to end the interview because we've reached 90 minutes in a not-so-subtle attempt to get out of what I perceived to be an awkward situation. What happens next was totally unexpected and i think actually made the podcast better, if not slightly more uncomfortable for yours truly. This podcast as a project, started as a growing experience for myself and since that has not changed, I have decided to leave the ending of this conversation mostly untouched, where you'll get to hear some of this growth happen live. I think I will just leave it at that and let you discover what happens if you decide to stick around till the end. Many thanks to Eamon for being an awesome human and bringing his A-game. As you'll hear, I have looked up to Eamon and his work for a while now and he did not disappoint.https://www.eamonarmstrong.comLife is a Festival: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/life-is-a-festival/id1443178401The Psychedelic Therapy Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/life-is-a-festival/id1443178401The Body Keeps the Score: https://www.amazon.com/Body-Keeps-Score-Healing-Trauma/dp/0143127748Steppenwolf: https://www.amazon.com/Steppenwolf-Novel-Hermann-Hesse/dp/0312278675/Finite and Infinite Games: https://www.amazon.com/Finite-Infinite-Games-James-Carse/dp/1476731713/Donate to Burning Man: https://donate.burningman.org
This is a big one for Life is a Festival. Today I’m releasing an interview I conducted a few weeks ago with Marian Goodell, CEO of Burning Man. On the show, we talk about whether Burning Man is—as is fervently contested—a festival or if we should protect the unique event from that label. We spend the first 20 minutes talking about Marian’s life and how she first came to the Black Rock Desert. We discuss Burning Man’s cultural course correction, how radical inclusivity must now be proactive racial inclusivity, and Burning Man’s 2030 Sustainability Roadmap which has been accelerated by taking a year off from the desert. The most important aspect of our conversation focuses on the financial needs of the Burning Man Project, and how we as a community and global culture can pitch in to keep Black Rock City alive. Marian is one of Burning Man’s 6 cofounders and currently serves as CEO of the nonprofit. Her previous roles with the organization include Director of Business and Communications and head of the Black Rock City Department of Public Works. Marian received a BA in Creative Writing from Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland and an MFA in photography from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She first came to Burning Man as a participant in 1995. When Marian Goodell first pulled up to Burning Man in 1995, two men in the desert-- one with a machine gun, and another wrapped in a white sheet holding a plastic flamingo, told her to drive straight toward a mountain peak for 15 miles, then turn right and drive another two. But the experimental community that welcomed her that day, changed her life. As a founding member of Black Rock City, LLC, and Burning Man's first CEO, Marian oversees an operating budget of $45 million, while protecting the Burner culture and helping it thrive across continents. Hear how she discovered Burning Man through a friend's photograph, why founders of Black Rock City LLC were nervous at first about publishing 10 guiding principles, and how a community built on radical inclusion, radical self-reliance and gifting (among other things) has spread across the world. When you know that you're in a valley, then you can navigate it in a way that's the most effective as opposed to getting lost in the darkness. Give your thoughts and emotions their space, observe them, allow them to pass by, and do whatever you can to just gently find your way out of it but never by forcing, masking, or holding them down." - Brandon Beachum The Positive Side Of Relationships Ending "All relationships have the purpose of growth and the idea that one has to last forever in order to be successful is a big misconception that permeates our collective consciousness. You are going to come together with different energies for all of eternity and thank goodness there is some shelf-life to all of them. Whether you spend a whole lifetime together or 5 weeks or 5 days, that separation gives us the opportunity to miss the relationship and have gratitude for it. You never truly lose anyone or anything. Honor that relationship, know that you are infinitely abundant and the universe will send whatever else you need." - Brandon Beachum Experiencing Life Fully Through Love, Wonder, And Pain "God is using all of these 'painful experiences' for love in the end. Wholeheartedly, we will or already have experienced every type of love, wonder, or pain in our lifetimes. That's the game, I believe, that our soul signed up for; it signed up to go down the deep rabbit hole of contrast so that it could fully appreciate who and what we are in this life. Understanding that helps us realize that it's all going to be okay in the end. We are not victims because everything that we experience is not happening to us but for us. Life is not happening to you, it is always, always, and always happening for you."- Brandon Beachum Links From Today's Show LIFEAID CBD 303 Aaron Hinde The Celestine Prophecy: An Adventure by James Redfield Buckminster Fuller 096 Daniel Schmachtenberger Alan Watts 032 Gay and Katie Hendricks Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife by Dr. Eben Alexander III Whatever Arises, Love That: A Love Revolution That Begins with You by Matt Kahn Michael Beckwith Life is NOT a Journey - Alan Watts Interstellar trailer Inside Out trailer Dr. Erica Middlemiss Dr. Joe Dispenza The M21 Wellness Guide Positive Head Podcast #271: Cory Allen Mystic Manor Optimystic Instagram Positive Head podcast Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Brandon Beachum Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn About Brandon Beachum Brandon Beachum is a podcaster, entrepreneur, writer, musician, philosopher, and truth-seeker. He originally made his way to California from the east coast when his former band received a development deal with Elektra Records back in 2001. Brandon has been a serial entrepreneur since childhood and in 2010, while living on a friend’s couch, he founded what is now his first recognizably successful company, ResortShare. In August of 2015, ResortShare was named the 569th fastest-growing private company in America in the annual Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Companies list. In October 2015 ResortShare received an offer to be bought out for $30 million dollars by a publicly-traded company, but within 12 hours of receiving the offer, they lost 90% of their revenue stream due to an exclusive arrangement a major partner (Booking.com) signed with a much larger competitor. (Positive Head, HelloVacay.com, Sesh.io) The Ultimate Nature Of Reality Since discussing and continually exploring what he refers to as “The Ultimate Nature of Reality” is something he feels called very strongly to do, he decided that launching a podcast would be the best avenue to pursue his calling and to help bring that increasingly popular topic of conversation to a broader audience. So in May 2015, he launched PositiveHead.com and The Positive Head Podcast. The show’s aim is to help listeners consistently maintain elevated vibration. In an effort to help the listeners achieve that aim, every Wednesday he interviews a different author, director, artist, blogger, scientist, entrepreneur or other notable personality who is out there making a positive impact on the world. He has been extremely fortunate to have the privilege to interview some amazing and highly-respected guests in the very first year of his show (i.e. Dr. Eben Alexander, Marian Goodell, Dr. Bruce Lipton, Nassim Haramein). Brandon's Dedication To Better Wellness On the other weekdays, Brandon and his co-host Dalien give interpretations of their favorite quotes, share a bit of mind-expanding or mysterious news, take questions from the audience, and dig into any other mind-expansive topics that they feel will help keep the listeners’ souls fed on a regular basis. The Positive Head Podcast has continued to experience exponential growth and was featured in the “New & Noteworthy” section on iTunes within weeks of being launched, and is currently listed in the “What’s Hot” section on iTunes in multiple categories. Brandon is also currently in the process of writing his first two books, The Fountain of You: How the marriage of science and spirituality is birthing us into the age of timelessness and The Talk: A wakeup call for those ready to re-member. Marian Goodell, CEO of the Burning Man Project, talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about Burning Man, the 8-day art and music festival in the Nevada Desert. Marian Goodell is one of the founding board members of the Burning Man Project and is now the organisation's first CEO. She joined us on the Banter stage to talk about her long and winding road to Burning Man, what keeps her turned on about the event and what comes next for the worldwide community of Burners.
How did Marian Goodell go from studying photography and creative writing to becoming the CEO of Burning Man, one of the biggest sociocultural experiments of our time? The link is fascinating, especially for those who are both creative and analytical and who aren’t following a straight and predictable path. Find out how Marian deals with criticism (i.e., she is too impatient and her tone is too "demanding") and how she filters feedback. Show Notes:-Marian as a little girl: Learning self-acceptance, how to embrace differences, and enjoying the perks of being a fiery redhead. [2:34]-The role of Marian’s family in shaping her to become a strong, confident woman. [8:47]-On attending an all-girls college, running for student body, and the first time she decided to be a leader. [13:16]-“My role as a CEO is very much that of a storyteller”: How Marian’s creative, analytical side made her the right woman for the job. [16:37]-On being a “cat herder” and what that means to her as a leader, and other leadership qualities. [21:47]-Why Marian cares about providing opportunities, giving people the benefit of the doubt, and sharing differing perspectives. [27:04]-Stories of her father and his participation in Burning Man 2008 (a year before he passed away). [30:32]-Marian and Maria discuss failure and the fear of rejection, the importance of creative confidence, and the challenges (and benefits) of collaboration. [35:14]-On feminism and fathers, and finding the balance between feminine and masculine leadership traits. [40:30]-Looking beyond gender: Taking a hard look at qualities like patience, aggression, compassion. [47:26]-How Marian filters and utilizes criticism/feedback. [52:38]-Have you ever felt like an imposter? The inner critic vs empowering voice. [57:44]-Burning Man: Marian’s vision for the project’s future, her favorite principles (Leave No Trace and Radical Self-Expression), and being poised in the world as a catalyst for social change.
