I Went Caving In The Nevada Desert Inside, I Found Piles Of Children's Shoes And Bones!
A mysterious rising structure has been discovered in a rural desert area in the western American state of Nevada.在美国西部内华达州的一个农村沙漠地区发现了一个神秘的上升结构。The tall, pillar-shaped object is being described as a monolith. Images suggest it is made of metallic material and its surface is reflective.这个高大的柱状物体被描述为一块独石。从图片上看,它似乎是由金属材料制成,表面具有反光性。The object recently drew attention when the Las Vegas police department published a photo and message about the structure on the social media service X. It read: “We see a lot of weird things when people go hiking like not being prepared for the weather, not bringing enough water...but check this out!” 但看看这个!”Officers recently saw the monolith while carrying out a search and rescue operation. The area is about one hour north of Las Vegas. It is popular with hikers.警官们最近在执行搜救任务时看到了这块独石。该地区位于拉斯维加斯以北约一小时的路程,非常受徒步旅行者的欢迎。The area is part of Nevada's large Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Bighorn sheep and desert tortoises can be found there. The monolith was put in an area with mountain peaks up to 2,100 meters high.该地区是内华达州大型沙漠国家野生动物保护区的一部分,那里有大角羊和沙漠龟。这块独石被放置在海拔高达2100米的山峰区域。The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service told The Associated Press (AP) that its members were trying to learn more about the monolith.美国鱼类及野生动物管理局告诉美联社(AP),其成员正在努力了解更多关于这块独石的信息。Images included with the X message showed the structure standing tall against a bright blue sky, with distant views of the Las Vegas valley. Many observers noted on social media the monolith looked like an object that appeared in Stanley Kubrick's famous science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey.X消息附带的图片显示,这个结构在明亮的蓝天背景下高高矗立,远处可以看到拉斯维加斯山谷的景色。许多观察者在社交媒体上指出,这块独石看起来像斯坦利·库布里克著名的科幻电影《2001太空漫游》中的一个物体。The mysterious structure is the latest object to appear in recent years in different places around the U.S. and Europe. The first one to receive wide media attention was discovered in the Utah desert in late 2020. Others have been discovered in California and in the nations of Canada, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Britain. All the structures disappeared about as quickly as they appeared. Placing the objects is a violation of a U.S. law that protects federal lands.所有这些结构物体消失的速度几乎与它们出现的速度一样快。放置这些物体违反了美国保护联邦土地的法律。The monolith found in Utah in 2020 stood about 3.6 meters tall, the AP reported. It was placed in rock in an area so remote that local officials decided not to immediately inform the public. The officials feared people would get lost trying to find it.据美联社报道,2020年在犹他州发现的独石高约3.6米。它被放置在一个非常偏远的岩石区域,以至于当地官员决定不立即通知公众。官员们担心人们会在寻找它的过程中迷路。But many people were successful in finding it. Fish and Wildlife officials said that during the search, visitors to the area flattened plants with vehicles and left behind human waste. Two men known for doing extreme sports in Utah later said that kind of damage persuaded them to go to the area late at night and tear the structure down and remove it. This time, officials at the Fish and Wildlife Service are worried about similar harms from visitors. Nevada's Desert National Wildlife Refuge is the largest wildlife refuge outside of Alaska.这次,鱼类及野生动物管理局的官员们担心游客会造成类似的伤害。内华达州的沙漠国家野生动物保护区是阿拉斯加以外最大的野生动物保护区。Christa Weise oversees refuge operations. She said, “People might come looking for it and be coming with inappropriate vehicles or driving where they shouldn't, trampling plants."Christa Weise 负责保护区的运营。她说:“人们可能会来寻找它,并驾驶不适当的车辆或在不该开的地方行驶,践踏植物。”The Nevada monolith has produced many different opinions by people on social media. One X user, publishing under the name @NWK1WAYS, simply declared: "Clearly Aliens!"内华达州的独石在社交媒体上引发了许多不同的意见。一位名为@NWK1WAYS的X用户简单地宣称:“显然是外星人!”Another user, @cdharris19, expressed disbelief that the mysterious placers had struck again. "Are we really gonna do this whole thing again?" the user asked. "Just remove the trash, find who dumped it, and fine them."另一位用户@cdharris19对神秘的放置者再次出现表示难以置信。这位用户问道:“我们真的要再做一次这个事情吗?把垃圾清理掉,找到谁扔的,然后罚款。”
It was two days after my motorcycle broke down in the Nevada Desert that I made the recording. It's actually a video where I described how everything was going great, until it wasn't going so great. Most importantly, I shared my feelings at that moment. Not a feeling of despair, or disappointment that my motorcycle journey had ended so abruptly. Instead, it was about feelings of overwhelming gratitude. Gratitude for a world just full of people who will help a stranger in need. This time, I was that stranger and I was in need. In today's episode, I'll share with you the raw, unedited audit that I captured that day back in the Nevada Desert to where my bike broke down. My hope is that you'll hear it in my voice, the gratitude that I felt toward so many good people, who came to my physical and emotional rescue.

Podcast Overview: Will & wAFF discuss touring, the importance of having a mental break from the DJ lifestyle, keeping up the motivation to produce along with DJing and his parties in the Columbian Favela's Who is wAFF: From his roots in the clubland underground of Leeds and Hull, DJ-producer wAFF has gone on to become globally renowned. He has earnt widespread respect. His schedule is relentless but he doesn't cut corners. He's the only British artist who's recorded for all three European techno hubs, Sven Väth's Cocoon, Adam Beyer's Drumcode and Loco Dice's Desolat. He approaches music with unstoppable enthusiasm and attention to detail. This summer, for instance, his Ibiza gigs range from his residency at Paradise at DC-10 to Elrow at Amnesia (and the rest of the world!). He's DJing everywhere, from recent Space in Miami to festival slots at Glastonbury, Hideout, Sziget and, yes, the original Nevada Desert madhouse, Burning Man. Now based in London, much further back wAFF kickstarted the underground dance scene in his native Hull and achieved success with his Koala parties in Leeds, providing a widely respected initial springboard to take things forward. He's been part of Jamie Jones's Paradise crew since their first 2012 season at DC-10, and also recorded regularly for Jones's Hot Creations imprint with tunes such as his Hot Creations debut ‘Rainbows', 2016's ‘Sick Pleasure' and ‘Kidney Punch', and 2015 monster ‘Fat Gash', all played by DJs ranging from Patrick Topping to Marco Carola. For Cocoon he recorded the Freeks EP, which contained the much-hammered hypno-thumping classic, ‘Groover', while Drumcode released his urgent nine minute techno-tinted floor-stormer ‘VibrationZ'. In this episode of the Energy News Beat Daily Standup, hosts Michael Tanner and Stuart Turley discuss various energy-related topics. They start with the introduction of a new geothermal power plant in the Nevada Desert by a startup called Furbo, highlighting its potential to make the internet greener. The hosts then move on to an opinion piece discussing the challenges in Alberta's power grid due to government interference, particularly in pushing for a shift to renewable energy. The discussion also touches on the gradual focus on a green energy wall and lower CO2 emissions, with skepticism about the effectiveness of renewables. The segment concludes with China increasing coal and gas consumption to meet rising power demand, contrasting with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The hosts briefly mention oil and gas finance, noting slight market changes and potential OPEC cuts. The segment ends with a mention of upcoming events like COP28.Highlights of the Podcast00:00 – Intro02:31 - A New Type of Geothermal Power Plant Just Made the Internet a Little Greener04:18 - David Staples: Danielle Smith conjures up a new A-bomb to drop on Trudeau's meddling in Alberta power grid06:25 - The Green Energy Wall Gradually Coming Into Focus07:59 - Lower CO2 emissions are partially due to shifts in power generation sources09:50 - China Boosts Coal and Gas Consumption as Power Demand Nears Record High11:31 - Markets Update12:59 - OutroPlease see the links below for articles that we discuss in the podcast.A New Type of Geothermal Power Plant Just Made the Internet a Little GreenerEarlier this month, one corner of the internet got a little bit greener, thanks to a first-of-its-kind geothermal operation in the northern Nevada desert. AP correspondent Donna Warder reports Burning Man attendees are finally able to leave the desert festival.
Authorities are investigating a death at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert as thousands of people remain trapped on site after heavy rains inundated the area and created thick, ankle-deep mud which sticks to campers' shoes and vehicle tires. Attendees were told to shelter in place in the Black Rock Desert and conserve food, water and fuel after a rainstorm swamped the area, forcing officials to halt any entering or leaving of the festival. “A little over 70,000 people,” remained stranded Saturday, Sgt. Nathan Carmichael, with the Pershing County Sheriff's Office, told CNN Sunday morning. Some people have left the site by walking out but “most of the RVs are stuck in place,” he said. On Sunday morning, event organizers said roads remained closed as they were “too wet and muddy” and more uncertain weather was likely on the way. While some vehicles were able to leave, others got stuck in the mud, organizers said on the event's website. “Please do NOT drive at this time,” they added. “We will update you on the driving ban after this weather front has left the area.” The remote area in northwest Nevada was hit with 2 to 3 months' worth of rain – up to 0.8 inches – in just 24 hours between Friday and Saturday morning. The heavy rainfall fell on dry desert grounds, whipping up thick, clay-like mud festivalgoers said was too difficult to walk or bike through. More rain is likely Sunday afternoon, according to a forecast from the National Weather Service office in Reno. “Stronger storms will be capable of very heavy rainfall, small hail, and wind gusts to 40+ mph,” the weather service noted. Those conditions were likely to be in the Burning Man Festival area from around 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. local time, a CNN analysis showed. The sheriff's office said it is investigating “a death which occurred during this rain event.” Authorities did not publicly name the person or provide details on the circumstances of the death. “The family has been notified and the death is under investigation,” the sheriff's office said in a late Saturday news release. The individual was found on the playa and life-saving procedures to revive them were not successful, Carmichael said Sunday, but did not share further details. Playa is the term used to describe sunken dry lake beds in deserts where water evaporates rather than running off, and even a small amount of rain can quickly soak a large area. Event organizers said they plan to burn the Man – the huge totem set on fire at the festival's culmination – on Sunday night, if weather allows. How long this could last Authorities have not provided information on when roads could reopen, but the sunshine is expected to return Monday. “We do not currently have an estimated time for the roads to be dry enough for RVs or vehicles to navigate safely,” Burning Man organizers said in a Saturday evening statement. “Monday late in the day would be possible if weather conditions are in our favor. It could be sooner.” Organizers noted the rain falling on an already saturated playa overnight and Sunday “will affect the amount of time it takes for the playa to dry.” For now, the gate and airport into Black Rock City remain closed and no driving is allowed into or out of the city except for emergency vehicles, the organizers said on social media. Black Rock City is a temporary metropolis erected annually for the festival and comes complete with emergency, safety and sanitary infrastructure. The rain “made it virtually impossible for motorized vehicles to traverse the playa,” the Pershing County Sheriff's Office said, noting people were advised to shelter in place until the ground has dried enough to drive on safely. Vehicles trying to drive out will get stuck in the mud, Burning Man organizers said Saturday. “It will hamper Exodus if we have cars stuck on roads in our camping areas, or on the Gate Road out of the city,” the organizers added. “If you are in BRC, please shelter in place & stay safe,” organizers said. Storms and heavy rains across Nevada flooded other parts of the state and may have led to another death. In Las Vegas, authorities found a person unresponsive and “entangled with debris,” on Saturday morning who is believed to be “a drowning victim,” according to Jace Radke, a spokesperson for the city. An investigation is ongoing, Radke said in a news release. Difficult conditions, but some stay positive Some festivalgoers hiked miles on foot in the thick mud to reach main roads while others stayed at their camps, hoping for conditions to improve. Hannah Burhorn, a first-time attendee at the festival, told CNN people were trudging through the mud barefoot or with bags tied around their feet. “People who have tried to bike through it and have gotten stuck because it's about ankle deep,” Burhorn said. The mud is so thick it “sticks to your shoes and makes it almost like a boot around your boot,” she added. It's unclear exactly how many people are stranded at the festival, but typically more than 70,000 people attend the weeklong event. It's being held from August 28 to September 4 this year. There weren't any reports of injuries as of Saturday afternoon, Sean Burke, the director of emergency management for Pershing County, told CNN. Amar Singh Duggal and his friends managed to leave the festival after hiking about 2 miles in the mud, he told CNN. He estimated it took them about 2 hours to get to a main road where they arranged to be picked up and taken to Reno, about a 120-mile drive from the event grounds. “We made it, but it was pure hell (walking) through the mud,” Duggal said. “Each step felt like we were walking with two big cinder blocks on our feet.” Among those attending the festival was DJ Diplo and comedian Chris Rock. Rock posted a video on Instagram of thick mud and Diplo posted a series of videos in which he said a fan offered him and Rock a ride out of the site. The DJ said they walked several miles and were able to get to a nearby airport. Meanwhile, attendees who typically dedicate their time to making art and building community are now also focused on rationing supplies and dealing with connectivity issues. “There is super limited bandwidth and a lot of people at the camp (are) trying to cancel flights and arrange for extended time here” due to the weather, Burhorn told CNN via text message from a Wi-Fi camp. Still, the poor conditions have not stopped the creativity, said Burhorn, who had traveled from San Francisco. “People are building mud sculptures,” she said. Andrew Hyde, another attendee stuck at the Burning Man, said despite the muddy conditions making it difficult to walk, the weather has taken the meaning of the event back to its roots. “You come out here to be in a harsh climate, and you prepare for that,” Hyde told CNN's Paula Newton. “So in many ways, everybody here just kind of made friends with their neighbors and it's a community event.” Morale at the event is OK and there's generally no panic among the attendees, Hyde said, describing music returning overnight. There are worries about the additional rain causing delays, however, and the unknowns of worsening conditions. “I think the concern is if we have another rain,” he said. “People need to go back to their jobs, back to the responsibilities they have back home.” Assistance brought in Organizers announced Saturday night they'll be putting mobile cell trailers in different positions, configuring the organization's Wi-Fi system for public access and deploying buses to nearby Gerlach to take people who might walk off the playa to Reno. “This is not likely a 24-hour operation at this time,” the festival said in a statement on its website. Organizers are also resourcing four-wheel-drive vehicles and all-terrain tires to help ferry medical and other urgent situations to the blacktop. There have been people who managed to walk to a main road and were waiting for transport from the festival organizers Saturday night, the Pershing County Sheriff's Office said. Resources have been brought in from around northern Nevada to help people with medical needs on the event grounds, the sheriff's office said. “Burning Man is a community of people who are prepared to support one another,” Burning Man said on its website. “We have come here knowing this is a place where we bring everything we need to survive. It is because of this that we are all well-prepared for a weather event like this.” “We have done table-top drills for events like this,” organizers added. “We are engaged full-time on all aspects of safety and looking ahead to our Exodus as our next priority.” - by Nouran Salahieh and Emma Tucker, CNNSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Breaking News!!! Top US Government Officials say Aliens are Real! Well, sort of. Listen along as I summarize this week's exciting Whistleblower Bombshell: the US and other nations around the world have been collecting ALIEN craft for decades in a clandestine Arms Race! No joke. This week the I am reading from Dr. Christopher Kerr's book 'Experiences of the Dying: Evidence of Survival of Human Consciousness' and 'Extraterrestrial Visitations: True Accounts of UFO Contact' by Preston Dennett.Dr Christopher Kerr's book 'Death is But a Dream: Hope and Meaning at Life's End'.Christopher Kerr is a hospice doctor. All of his patients die. Yet he has cared for thousands of patients who, in the face of death, speak of love and grace. Beyond the physical realities of dying are unseen processes that are remarkably life-affirming. These include dreams that are unlike any regular dream. Described as "more real than real," these end-of-life experiences resurrect past relationships, meaningful events and themes of love and forgiveness; they restore life's meaning and mark the transition from distress to comfort and acceptance.Drawing on interviews with over 1,400 patients and more than a decade of quantified data, Dr. Kerr reveals that pre-death dreams and visions are extraordinary occurrences that humanize the dying process. He shares how his patients' stories point to death as not solely about the end of life, but as the final chapter of humanity's transcendence. Kerr's book also illuminates the benefits of these phenomena for the bereaved, who find solace in seeing their loved ones pass with a sense of calm closure.Beautifully written, with astonishing real-life characters and stories, this book is at its heart a celebration of our power to reclaim the dying process as a deeply meaningful one. Death Is But a Dream is an important contribution to our understanding of medicine's and humanity's greatest mystery.BioChristopher Kerr, MD, PhD, is the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Executive Officer for Hospice & Palliative Care Buffalo. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Chris earned his MD as well as a PhD in Neurobiology. Dr. Kerr received numerous awards throughout training that recognized his clinical performance, as well as his success as an educator and scientist. Chris's background in research has evolved from bench science toward the human experience of illness as witnessed from the bedside, specifically patients' dreams and visions at the end of life. Although medically ignored, these near-universal experiences often provide comfort and meaning, as well as insight into the life led and the death anticipated. To date, the research team at Hospice & Palliative Care Buffalo has published multiple studies on this topic and documented over 1,500 end-of-life events, many of which are videotaped. This work was the subject of Chris's TEDx Buffalo Talk, which has been viewed approximately 3 million times and has been the subject of reports on BBC and in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Scientific American Mind, Huffington Post and Psychology Today. It will also be featured in an upcoming Netflix production and a public television documentary film to be released nationally in early 2021. Dr. Kerr's work was also published by Penguin Random House earlier this year in a book called Death Is But a Dream, which is now being released in multiple languages.https://www.amazon.com/Death-But-Dream-Finding-Meaning-ebook/dp/B07SRQC373/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1613916946&sr=8-1https://www.bigelowinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/kerr-experiences-dying.pdfhttps://www.drchristopherkerr.com/Preston Dennett about his book 'Extraterrestrial Visitations: True Accounts of UFO Contact'.This book represents the cutting edge of UFO research, with ten new and original firsthand accounts of very close encounters with UFOs and aliens. As is tradition for the Pangolin 4x4 team, the motley crew of Ike, Jenna, Linus, Maddi, and Steve Francis embarked on their annual holiday desert excursion. This year's trip included numerous locations throughout the Nevada desert, down into Death Valley, through numerous mines and ghosttowns. Hear their tales of rescuing a couple in a broken down sprinter van with some less than reliable welding tools. The team tries to recall how many times they needed a winch to get themselves unstuck, and a harrowing descent into Silver Peak. Leave it to Jenna and Maddi to befriend the owner of a menagerie of animals, including camels, pigs, birds, emus and more. Hear all about Ike's disdain at taking a mud bath near Diana's Punch Bowl, and Steve's near-death experience with some faulty headlight wiring. Concluding this episode, Maddi and Steve run the intimidating gauntlet of lightning round questions. This week's episode packs a punch, with fun tails from the trails.

When they launched a Sonoma wine business in their laundry room in 1986, Bonnie Harvey and Michael Houlihan were business consultants with no industry knowledge and no money, just $300,000 worth of bulk wine. Today, the Barefoot Wines label they started is a top international brand. They've written thousands of articles and two best-selling books—The Barefoot Spirit: How Hardship, Hustle and Heart Built America's Number One Wine Brand and The Entrepreneurial Culture: 23 Ways to Engage and Empower your People. Now they're helping other entrepreneurs tell their stories in imaginative audio books. The common theme running through all these successful endeavors is being outsiders, continually forced to come up with novel solutions. “We'd never written a book before. We'd never done an audio book before. We'd never done a wine business before,” Michael tells Published Author Podcast host Josh Steimle. “We weren't wine people. We were entrepreneurs.” TOP TAKEAWAY: YOU CAN DO IT! That's the message Bonnie and Michael want to pass on to entrepreneurial consumers of their print and audio books. “The Barefoot Spirit is a you-can-do-it story, says Michael. “No, it's not what you expect. It's more work and different work than you thought, but this is doable. That's the message, an encouraging message for entrepreneurs.” After 19 years of a “get-rich slow scheme,” Bonnie and Michael sold Barefoot Wines and wrote a book, at their staff's insistence. “Once we sold our company, our staff came around and said working for us was the most unique, wonderful experience they'd ever had. And that we'd have to write a book about the company culture, which is why they'd all stayed with us.” says Bonnie. “Because our approach was so unique, we wanted to share it with other people, and the only way to do that was in a book.” But they didn't want the Barefoot Spirit to be a typical, top-down business book. “So we thought why don't we just give them a story and let them draw their own conclusions, because they'll see the action and outcomes and learn the lessons even better than in a prescriptive text,” says Michael. Make sure you're ghostwriter understands the principles you're communicating After a disastrous first attempt at hiring a writer for their book, Michael and Bonnie found Rick Cushman, a longtime food-and-wine columnist for the Sacramento Bee, who impressed them with his humor, style and ability to tell stories. “He talks to the average person, which was our end user in the wine industry,” says Bonnie. “So we'd tell him stories, and he'd take notes.” “I would recommend to your listeners if you're going to get a ghostwriter, make sure they understand the principles you're trying to get across,” adds Michael. “What is the basic message here? Is it a message of tenacity, of innovation, of humanity?” TURNING BUSINESS BOOKS INTO AUDIO PLAYS The couple's latest book, The Entrepreneurial Culture: 23 Ways to Engage and Empower Your People, is an audio book, intended to reach a wider, younger audience. But it has a twist. “We bought the top 10 audiobooks on Audible, and every one was great. But they were all read to you. They were all narrated,” says Michael. Driving across the Nevada Desert one day, they heard a PBS radio play complete with actors, sound effects and music. “We thought this is a fantastic way to communicate, through an audio play, like we had in the 1940s, before television.” “Audio is entirely mobile, and you're not tethered to a screen or a page—you're jogging, driving, cooking pasta, vacuuming the floor—and you're listening to a story and you're learning from it. And you can put it down or pick it up anytime you like.” The Entrepreneurial Culture was named a top-five audio book of 2020 by the Audiobook Producers Association. The award's judges said they'd never heard a nonfiction audiobook like it, let alone one that was self published. Bonnie and Michael are now offering their audio theatre services to other entrepreneurs so these companies can preserve, in story form, their legacy, successes and knowledge. “We're motivated to help others and educate ourselves, to stay on top of the entrepreneurial education industry.” LINKS LinkedIn - Michael Houlihan Linkedin - Bonnie Harvey Twitter Facebook Instagram YouTube TheBareFootSpirit.com Subscribe To The Published Author Podcast If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or anywhere else you listen to podcasts. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?... Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you... And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fears, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~ Marianne Williamson from A Return To Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles What if you could be doing anything in the world that you wanted to be doing... What would that be? If there were no limitations... If money was not an obstacle... If education was not an obstacle... If family obligations were not an obstacle... What would your life look like? In this episode, Valeria Teles interviews Bella St John, the author of Achievement Alchemist: Discover Your Passion & Create the Life of Your Dreams. Rather than ‘telling' you what you should or could be doing with your life, the Achievement Alchemist Guided Journal provides you with the basic tools and then challenges you with a series of exercises and questions to help you understand and then embrace the power of passion. Before she essentially retired Ms (Leigh) Bella St John's career was that of achievement strategist, executive coach, professional speaker and author, presenter, and a leading authority on ‘abundance thinking‘. Bella's adventures and the things she has done in her life make one think she must be at least 179 years of age – and all this with physical and mobility challenges… Among other things, she rode in a husky sled in the Scottish Highlands; spent time down in a Romanian salt mine; raced speedway stock cars; travelled overnight by rail from Vienna to Rome; spoke on stage at the United Nations; attended the Winter Olympics in Whistler; cruised the River Danube; stayed overnight by herself in a ghost town in the middle of the Nevada Desert; bought her very own Victorian horse-drawn carriage (as one does!); road-tripped across, around, and through America multiple, multiple times in a classic Jaguar convertible; visited the town with the longest place name in the world, cruised the Mississippi river on a paddle steamer; travelled by Jeep through underground caverns in the Ozarks; spent a week camping by herself beside a stunning lake in Georgia, complete with nightly skinny-dipping under the stars; visited the Altaussee salt mine in the mountains of Austria where WWII art treasures stolen by the Nazis were found by the ‘Monuments Men'; slept in King Edward VII's bed; rode on the world's steepest incline railway; visited the church where her great-grandfather's great-grandparents were married;… and sooooo much more! For this episode I spoke to sisters Deni and Dusty, who are the nieces of Vickie Lynn Brekke who was murdered in 1978. She was only 15. Vickie died over four decades ago and her family still has no answers. On May 7, 1978, Vickie Brekke, 15, left her Las Vegas home to visit her best friend as she often did. However, Vickie never made it to the friend’s house. The next day (May 8th) Vickie’s body was found in the desert. Someone had strangled her. In this interview, Deni and Dusty said their mother, who was Vickie’s sister spent much of her life trying to figure out who killed her sister. She has since passed without ever knowing who killed Vickie. The mystery of who killed Vickie Brekke has now been handed off to her two nieces Deni and Dusty who won’t rest until they find out who killed their Aunt Vickie. These sisters are determined to get answers. They believe their aunt was killed by someone she knew. Can you help them find out what happened to their aunt? It's been four decades since Vickie Brekke was murdered. If you have any information about this cold case, please contact the Las Vegas Police Department at (702)828-3521 or call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555. The hunt for 'smart' manufacturing During the summer, Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, or H-M-I hosted its ‘HxGN Live’ event in Las Vegas,. You may remember we covered the event in the September issue of MTD magazine. The ongoing success of this event was the catalyst behind bringing the glitz of the Vegas strip to the UK, at the world-renowned Belfry Hotel & Resort. The H-M-I UK team prepared a spectacular two-day HxGN LOCAL Smart Manufacturing event with keynote speakers. It provided every ounce of prestige that global delegates enjoyed in the Nevada Desert. MTD Magazine was in attendance to see what the event had to offer. Like the HxGN Live event in Las Vegas, the H-M-I UK event took on a holistic approach to the challenges of the manufacturing industry and its future. With such an extensive product portfolio that covers the entire spectrum of manufacturing, it’s a fitting philosophy. Demonstrating this at the HxGN LOCAL Smart Manufacturing event was a showroom set up with stations and technical experts. It took visitors from the concept, design and engineering phase through to production, measurement, verification and project completion. This incorporated everything from 3D scanning and reverse engineering through CAD, CAM, model verification and production software on to the very latest metrology equipment. The demonstration stations encompassed everything from the latest developments of the MSC CAE and simulation software platforms through EDGECAM, Javelin, Machining Strategist, Radan, VISI, WorkNC and Workplan platforms. Bringing the simulation demonstrations to life through VR was a Ducati motorcycle saddle construction and design. It started with a measuring arm and reverse engineering process that was then optimally programmed with EDGECAM and NCSIMUL. Further downstream was the measurement portfolio with the OPTIV Performance 3d multi-sensor, 7-axis Absolute Arm, Leica Absolute Tracker ATS600, the RS6 Laser Scanner, the TIGO SF, AICON Stereoscan, the Sensorfar 3D optical measuring device and the ingenious Hexagon SFx Cloud ready asset management software that interconnects the measurement hardware range. All of this was encapsulated in a ‘Smart is Hiding in Plain Sight’ keynote speech delivered by Norbert Hanke, the President & CEO of HMI. This was followed by an insightful presentation from Stefan Hyttfors ‘Five things you must know about the future’. The afternoon ‘breakout sessions’ gave delegates the opportunity to take in presentations from Paul Andrews of Robo-race on the world’s first racing series for humans & AI and Ben Morgan the Head of the Integrated Manufacturing Group and Factory 2050 at the AMRC on reconfigurable assembly and digitally driven component manufacturing. Presentations were also provided by Mike Falconer, the Education & Development Manager for the MTA on ‘SMART Students’ and ‘The SUMO Guy’ Paul McGee who delivered a presentation on ‘How to develop your resilience and build better relationships’. The level of insight from each presentation was epitomised by newshound Daisy McAndrew from Sky and BBC News who discussed Brexit and the future of UK manufacturing. Just when we all think we are experts on Brexit after countless hours of watching and listening to TV and radio, Daisy blew perceptions on Brexit and politicians apart with her fascinating insights and tales. Following the absorbing events during the day, H-M-I put on evening entertainment with a band, magician, casino and simulated racing with Ben Collins, the man behind ‘the STIG’ from Top Gear. Day two 's activities kicked off with Raf Lobato, the Strategic Product Development Director at Hexagon providing a presentation that was followed by explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE talking about ‘Living dangerously’. With the theme firmly set around ‘Smart’ manufacturing, we listened to the keynote speech from Norbert Hanke, a fascinating insight into the future; not just for Hexagon, but for all manufacturers. He said: “The manufacturing industry is on the hunt for ‘Smart’. ‘Smart’ is all around us and we don’t have to look far to find it. We are living in a perfect storm of events and uncertainty that requires agility like never before. World trade growth has dropped over the last couple of years quite dramatically. Politics has impacted global growth and emerging markets have been slowing down for some time. With all these challenges, its urgent that we all find a ‘smart,’ agile and resilient business model.” “The world of manufacturing is experiencing huge shifts and customers are demanding more personalisation and better-quality products. You only have to look at the automotive sector and its changes. Companies have built cars for decades, but now the question is ‘do I build the asset?’ or ‘do I offer the service?’.” “So, lets investigate the current state of ‘Smart’. Many people perceive the transformation of manufacturing as a linear function. This is people thinking how the business will be affected by disruption. However, the reality is that both the change and the impact are exponential. Why do we have to embrace these technologies? Well, growth and productivity has declined in advanced economies and with our ageing population, there is a downward trend in the working age population to fill manufacturing jobs. While these new transformative technologies can move towards a new level of automation to address the productivity and labour issues, this can have a negative impact on the economy. However, the reality is that for the last 100 years, technology has always created more jobs and new industries. So, it’s all about the mindset for change. The key to this is the digital transformation and the currency is data. We need to create value out of the data.” “Jumping into technology, you can access much more data and leverage many more benefits, but are we ready to jump? Today there is a big shift in how business leaders are looking at technology in manufacturing. Some research indicates that 95% of all CEO’s see disruptive technology as an opportunity and not a threat. Almost two thirds say they are personally prepared to lead their organisation through a radical transformation of operating processes to maintain competitiveness. These leaders are recognising that connected data is offering new levels of insight for predictive pro-active services and solutions. The future will rely on connectivity and data. Data can save the future of our manufacturing industry, but only when the data is unlocked, unleashed and put to work for us in higher manufacturing ecosystems.” “At Hexagon, we realise the keys to transformation and are striving to unlock data and its value for customers. We are putting data to work to create ecosystems that are connected and increasingly autonomous. To achieve this autonomy there are a number of points to cover. Firstly, the ecosystem must be digital. Manufacturing still has a way to go before it achieves digital transformation, but to be successful, the ecosystem from design to production to metrology all has to be digital. Everything has to be digital and interconnected and we are now entering a new age of connectivity that can open doors for huge possibilities.” New Solutions “One example of this connectivity is our new partnership with Ericsson. They have developed an industry connect solution that can secure a 5G connection for your factory. It is very important that we implement this system in our factories, but it is also important that our equipment is 5G ready.” “Our final imperative is that the ecosystem has to be intelligent, a smart connected ecosystem. We want to build this intelligence into the solutions of today. We recently introduced a new solution called ‘Lightrunner’, which is like a facial recognition system for the factory. It provides constant absolute positioning and mapping for the measurement of parts. Lightrunner is the new class of solution that Hexagon is committed to; and with that we are using very powerful data in a very intelligent way.” Are we wasting data? “Did you know that over 90% of the data that is collected in manufacturing processes is never used. In manufacturing, none of us like waste. If you look in your workflows, you can find data that is neglected, ignored or just unused. What if you could have a complete overview of your metrology assets in your manufacturing facility? ‘Smart’ is hiding in your resources. The new Hexagon asset management software is the first of our asset-based solutions that brings together data from multiple sources, including the parts and the environmental monitoring system to provide a single remote view of your assets. This visibility allows you to minimise your downtime and maximise efficiency to manage resources.” Using SPC to find the data solution. Referring back to the original message of “how to find ‘Smart’”, Norbert continued with some interesting points around S-P-C data and its relevance to the future of manufacturing and digital transformation: He said “Smart can be found in our future with S-P-C. S-P-C today is typically used to identify trends and make corrections. It is also used to make predictions based on trends. Machine learning offers huge potential with the processing of ‘big data’ and when combined with S-P-C, it allows us to predict issues much further into the future and create a much greater element of certainty.” “By performing ‘non-linear’ analysis on SPC data, we can see that the future will look much different. So, where do we look for Smart next? Its hiding between your tools and your systems. Take a look at a cutting tool that has cutting data and the machine parameters. This is where our FASYS helps you to connect the CAD/CAM software to tool inventory management software to allow you to ensure the correct tool is used on the part and that it is set-up correctly. This allows you to reduce inventory and still have the right tool when it is needed. Connecting the supply chain, the outcome is uninterrupted manufacturing.” A new addition to the Hexagon brand Continuing the theme of finding ‘Smart’ and the connected supply chain, Norbert said: “We have recently bought a company called Etalon. Etalon specialises in machine calibration and monitoring. I f you could know all the characteristics of your machine tools and compensate for errors, just think how much smarter your digital workflow could be. Etalon solutions enable machine tools to monitor their own geometrics and perform compensation to improve the quality of parts. What if we look forward at how we can build this into our simulation packages like NCSIMUL to build a true digital twin of the machine, building a smart digital reality. This will cut costs in the product development stages and simulation, showing that ‘Smart’ is even hiding in the digital reality.” Are you on the hunt for ‘Smart’ manufacturing and has the transformation to digital platforms been considered or started at your company? Following such a successful and insightful event, Hexagon will be looking to use this educational platform again in the future and when it does, MTD magazine would recommend our readers to take a look into the opportunities available from ‘Smart’ digital technologies.
People are starting to show up in the Nevada desert for Alienstock, a music festival that sprang out of a viral Facebook plan to “storm Area 51” authorities say there were approximately 1,500 people in tiny Rachel, Nev., on Thursday, but police are expecting the numbers to reach 30,000 by Saturday. And based on the first few events, most people are here for the jokes. Approximately 75 visitors held a tongue-in-cheek “protest” outside the Area 51 gate on Friday morning, where they waved signs demanding freedom for the aliens who are supposedly trapped in government custody. Of my friends and colleagues that have been killed in military aircraft they have all had one thing in common - they were all in control of the aircraft when they died. Low-level flying is an unforgiving business and it doesn't take much to get it wrong. This is why we have currencies, proficiencies and rules, to make sure that we are safe to operate when close to the ground. You see, humans are exceptionally poor at multi-tasking and pilots are no different. Everybody thinks that pilots must be good at it but nothing could be further from the truth. Pilots don't multi-task - they just prioritise a task list exceptionally quickly. When a pilot is flying they try to have as clear a mind as possible, I liken it to a blank piece of paper or a whiteboard on an office wall. When a task comes in, such as a radio call, radar contact or something that requires an unplanned action from the pilot, it needs to be dealt with as efficiently as possible. It's like the task is automatically written onto the whiteboard but only one task can fit at any one time; the pilot must deal with it as fast as they can so that they can clear the whiteboard for the next task. Sometimes this might mean that the task gets half done or postponed as the next task that has come in is deemed more important; this is called prioritisation. If one task is ongoing when another task comes in then the pilot will attempt to compartmentalise the tasks, putting them both onto the whiteboard - in this case both tasks are now being done poorly. If another task comes in and the pilot cannot clear the whiteboard quickly enough then task-saturation can occur. It is at this point that most of my friends have been killed. The experienced pilot recognises task saturation approaching and applies the mantra 'Aviate, Navigate, Communicate'. For most pilots hearing is the first sense we lose when we become overloaded, you miss a radio call. Personally, when I stop being able to effectively communicate with my formation or with air traffic, I recognise this as my first indication that all is becoming too much. At this point, especially if I am at low-level, I prioritise the flying of the aircraft and step my height up a little.I prioritise the flying.'You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.' I have a friend who was the rear-seater (WSO) in a Tornado GR4 that crashed on the east coast of England. They were flying at 250 ft when his aircraft hit a flock of birds and lost power to both of the engines. The pilot was so involved in trying to get at least one engine relit that my friend had to initiate the command eject system removing them both from the aircraft seconds before it stalled, quickly lost lift and impacted the ground. The subsequent inquiry concluded that if the ejection had been over a second later then they would have both been killed.http://www.fastjetperformance.com/podcasts/sam-dodging-over-the-nevada-desert-why-low-level-flying-is-still-necessary See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Like the mutating cells it was trying to investigate, and through a serendipitous series of unrelated coincidences, what started out as a multi-disciplinary UK-based research project to explore the stratosphere using helium balloons somehow evolved and mutated into a high-powered rocketry based research collaboration with NASA Astrobiologists in the Nevada Desert. This high-octane talk by University of Bath researcher Dr Paul Shepherd explores the highs and lows of his journey into High Altitude Bioprospecting for a project which has fused structural engineering, electronics, computer science and biology.
Star Trek: Secret Voyage. The Original Series—or at least the late 23rd century—tends to be the focal point of today's fan productions; but that doesn't mean Kirk and Spock must always take the lead. There was a gap between the end of the five-year mission and the refit of the Enterprise as we saw it in The Motion Picture. What happened during that time? Star Trek: Secret Voyage, a creation of Craig Sheeler, is the story of a special mission carried out aboard the historic 1701 but under the command of a different captain with a different crew. In this episode of Continuing Mission we're joined by Craig to learn more about the series, various aspects of production—including creating visual effects, composing original music that’s true to TOS, shooting in the desert, the premise behind the first two episodes, and more. MAG curator of exhibitions Marie Via speaks on In the Nevada Desert by Birger Sandzen
From the newly-beautified old town district of Quito two miles high in the Andes to the ecological marvels of the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador is one of South America's must-experience treats for any world traveler. So how can you make contact with the native Quechua people and what safety precautions should you take? Rick finds out from Julian Smith, author of the Moon Handbook to Ecuador. Later in the program we will meet Jennifer Cox, who quit her job in Britain and made plans to date 80 men in 18 countries around the world. She eventually met Mr. Right in the Nevada Desert. She explains to Rick how that happened in her new book, "Around the World in 80 Dates."
