In Part 2, we sit with the concept of accelerationism, how it is occultural in its original form (in Bob's opinion), its problems, its appropriation by far-right groups, and the related sticky problems of capitalism and neoliberalism that are currently associated with accelerationist thinking in these circles. The conversation from here continues to expand.Bob also discusses the explosion of digital technologies and how contemporary spiritual currents and esoteric movements are enmeshed with technology. This leads us into a more detailed exploration of the CCRU and conspiracy theories, as well as the irony of how the esoteric concept of perennialism (or the idea that there is one everlasting Truth with a capitol T), has gained traction with some magical practitioners. As a little tangent, we also talk about trauma, as this is the ‘elephant in the room' when discussing Slenderman, as well as the current focus by many on ‘healing' and how esoteric currents AND neoliberalist viewpoints have also influenced the discourse around healing and wellness.Lastly, Bob shares his current work into the works of JG Ballard and Simon Sellars. Bob sees these works as esoteric texts that add to his interests of researching not only historiographical aspects, but also what is happening now in modern esoteric currents. PROGRAM NOTESBob Cluness:(99+) Bob Cluness | University of Iceland - Academia.edu(99+) "I am an other and I always was…" On the Weird and Eerie in Contemporary and Digital Cultures Ritgerð til MA-prófs í menningafraeði | Bob Cluness - Academia.eduSocial media:Facebook Simulacra and Simulation (The Body, In Theory: Histories of Cultural Materialism): Jean Baudrillard, Sheila Faria Glaser: 9780472065219: Amazon.com: BooksSelected articles about philosophers mentioned in E28:Gilles Deleuze (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)Félix Guattari - WikipediaJean François Lyotard (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)Hyperstition Primer (edith.reisen)The Weird And The Eerie [PDF] [3ufdj9jsm190] (vdoc.pub)Applied Ballardianism | Memoir from a Parallel Universe#ACCELERATE: The Accelerationist Reader | libcom.orgSlender Man stabbing - Wikipedia(99+) Speculative Fiction | Aren Roukema - Academia.edu“Book Zero” through the Years in: Aries - Ahead of print (brill.com)Chapter 12 “Cthulhu Gnosis” in: Fictional Practice: Magic, Narration, and the Power of Imagination (brill.com)Intensive Care (album) - WikipediaWatch Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God (HBO) | TV Shows | HBO MaxNOTE about audio: At this time, I am recording at a temporary location due to extensive home renovations. This month's guest is Bob Cluness. Bob is a PhD candidate and researcher in the cultural studies program at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik. Bob graduated in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in film studies on accelerationist aesthetics and action cinema, while in 2020 he received a master's degree in cultural studies with a thesis on the weird and eerie in contemporary and digital cultures. His current PhD project deals with the relationship between and esotericism and acceleration in UK subcultures in the late 20th century, through a discursive analysis of chaos magic(k) and the Cybernetic Cultures Research Unit, also known as CCRU. As part of his Academic research, Bob's interests look at the myriad intersections between esotericism and contemporary subcultures, such as cyberpunk, cyberspace and technology, the counterculture and the New Age, comics, zine culture, and music. He has also given papers centered on Icelandic occulture and spiritual currents such as Ásatrú, spiritualism, and wellness. As you can tell from the episode title, Bob and I are talking about a little bit of everything, and while, on the surface, these things may seem unrelated, as the discussion unfolds, I hope it will become clear that all of these strands are indeed very much connected. As this was a long interview, I'm providing it to you in 2 parts. In Part 1, Bob begins by explaining the terms “the weird” and “the eerie” and how these literary concepts have helped to fuel the social imagination; as well as the tricky issue of how one discerns between ‘fiction' and ‘reality'. With the help of philosophical concepts such as ‘the hyperreal' and simulacra taken from Baudrillard, as well as other concepts from French philosophers such as Deleuze, Guattari, and Lyotard, Bob discusses the effects of signs, symbols, and other images on our understanding of what's ‘real', as well as the dissolving boundaries between ‘the real' and ‘the artificial'. This all takes us into the area of hyperstition, the CCRU, and a case study that is a good example of a hyperstition found in the Slederman character, and later incident in 2014 involving Slenderman where two girls come to believe that he is a real entity, attempting to kill their friend because of it. Bob also talks about how such a character becomes implanted in our collective consciousness through digital interactions such as memes, and later becomes a part of our cultural history. Bob also touches on the concept of acceleration, which he later expands upon in part 2. In this episode of the DIVI Crypto Podcast, we are talking with Tom Graham, Co-founder and CEO of Metaphysic. Metaphysic builds the hyperreal metaverse, with AI created content and web3 infrastructure to make a hyperreal metaverse owned by users. We launched the first community--Synthetic Futures--dedicated to ethical synthetic media and the future of reality created with machines. We are also world leaders in creating AI generated content that looks real, building software to automate AI content creation, and work with the world's most innovative creators on impossible projects. The mission of Metaphysic is to endow people by putting them at the center of the engulfing content economies that will set the foundation for how we use the internet in the future. In building AI content generation tools and infrastructure to allow users to own and control their biometric data, Metaphysic builds towards an ethical web3 economy in which each internet user can access the limitless potential of the hyperreal metaverse. Synthetic media is the catch-all term for the quickly enlarging universe of digital objects and experiences created with positioning from artificial intelligence. Hyperreal are videos that are very realistic and often difficult to tell apart from digital content captured on cameras. Over the last few decades, the cost of for computer power has dropped, over half of the people on the planet have come online, the use of artificial intelligence in phones, cars, gadgets, and video games is now a commonplace, and breakthroughs in the evolution of AR and VR have made these technologies readily available to the general population. Metaphysic is building the AI technologies for avatars, NFTs, Hollywood movies, as well as innovative advertising. These technologies assist creators and companies move to generate hyperreal experiences and identities that people will be able to love and deeply connect with. The metaverse is often tied to the terms VR and AR, as these technologies permit users to fully immerse themselves in a 3D environment, where users interact with each other, play games, and build communities. Despite this, many still interact in a 2D environment. Despite much of this progress, it will take time for 3D engines, internet bandwidth, computer resources, along with consumer hardware to be able to emulate a world like in the film “Ready Player One.” It should also be noted that monumental effort is needed to establish ethical, legal, and economic norms to ensure that the livelihoods, privacy, and online experience of creators and users are protected from abuse. Wait a minute. Gordon of all people is giving advice about what now? Relax. I truly would never dream of it. Think of it more like Advice To A Young Wife From An Old Mistress. It's a dramatic frame that allows us to explore ways of being with this moment that -oh, just a thought- don't contribute to a field of war that brings everyone closer to nuclear annihilation while somehow assuming doing so gives you the moral high ground. So it's not actually (just?) for professional astrologers and other fortune tellers. It's for any of you looking around at the entire planet losing its mind and working out what role -in your profession, in your family, in your friendship group, in your communities- you are being called to step into. It's my offering to you, delivered in the form of a presentation given to a strictly hypothetical group of professional astrologers. Yeah, it's long. I mention at the beginning that the personal reason for sharing this is a healing one, around finding transformative ways of being with anger and defence. It may be challenging to watch or listen to for some of you. Healthy anger is a useful warning that situations or people are approaching important boundaries (physical or otherwise). And it is not that it means these boundaries must never be crossed or must always be defended. Anger simply calls you to an urgent awareness that boundary business is afoot. For instance, being wrong about something or some position you have taken in which you have invested a lot of emotional energy. When someone points this out or when you begin to realise it yourself, the anger signal is there. But this is probably one instance where you allow that signal to draw your attention to the boundary and, rather than defending it, allow that pent up energy to dissipate across it. I sincerely hope you come to your own understanding of the sentiment in which this presentation is offered, why it is offered at this time, as well as my intention that you find whatever medicine is meant for you in it. Note: This is a video presentation with slides and such. It is only available on Rumble. Though it will still work fine as an audio offering if that is what you prefer. We are in the process of transitioning from an analog, objective, real, physical world into a digital, subjective, surreal world. In that transition into a digital subjective world, we are experiencing a transformation of what is accepted as reality, when it isn't reality: it is synthetic. In this discussion enters Jean Beaudriallard and his understanding of hyperreality the creation of synthetic reality, which is not reality at all: it is the creation of something that is more real than real. It is beyond propaganda, but propaganda is certainly utilized. It is the creation of simulacra and simulation. And in this world of simulacra, we are being told to ignore objective reality and embrace hyperreality: an unreality that has no connection with that which it claims to represent. Our way of life, our media, our news and our body politic are now guided by the ever-changing synthetic world of the hyperreal. Hyperreal is defined by Dr. James Lindsay as “more real than real” or not bearing any true qualities to the original. As we examine the world around us, we begin to suspiciously consider that the world in which we live in is undergoing a major cultural transformation—one leading to a widespread lack of stability, an increase in moral relativism, and a rejection of objective truth. https://sovereignnations.com Support Sovereign Nations: https://paypal.me/sovnations https://patreon.com/sovnations Follow Sovereign Nations: https://sovereignnations.com/subscribe https://facebook.com/SovereignNations https://twitter.com/SovNations https://youtube.com/SovereignNations https://instagram.com/sovnations/ https://minds.com/sovnations?referrer=sovnations https://parler.com/profile/sovnations Podcast: https://soundcloud.com/sovereignnations https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-causes-of-things/id1383339158?mt=2 https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cDovL2ZlZWRzLnNvdW5kY2xvdWQuY29tL3VzZXJzL3NvdW5kY2xvdWQ6dXNlcnM6NDQ1NTczODAwL3NvdW5kcy5yc3M https://open.spotify.com/show/3mNCQcQAdawzIYAAuHfy8r https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/sovereign-nations/the-causes-of-things © 2022 Sovereign Nations. Mindfulness, No-Mind and Choiceless Awareness Imagine what it might be like to be an animal such as a squirrel. A squirrel doesn't have worries about the dynamics of their workplace, about debt or about their relationships. Squirrels don't have their head in the clouds daydreaming about what might be… They don't have regrets, and they don't have delusions. Instead, a squirrel simply experiences the world as it is. Hyperreal across all the senses, squirrels simply take in the world around them as it happens and react on a dime. This is something that a lot of people aspire to, as they believe that it will make them happier and help them to enjoy the world around them more. But just as important and just as valuable is the incredible benefit that this type of presence and mindfulness has in terms of athletics. Bruce Lee and ‘No Mind' An aspiration for many martial artists, including the legendary Bruce Lee, is to reach a state known as ‘no-mind. No-mind effectively means that you are reacting without thought, purely on instinct. Instead of experiencing your surroundings, thinking about how best to respond and then reacting; you instead react without pause or consideration. In martial arts, this state of no mind is accomplished through rigorous training. By simply repeating the same block over and over again, you eventually reach a point where your arm moves to block without any need for you to consciously command it to do so. Likewise, by repeating the same punch over and over, martial artists can reach the point where they're able to punch perfectly. At this point, they have strengthened the neural pathways required to deliver the perfect technique, and thus it reaches the point where it is really second nature. Many athletes in other sports achieve similar performance when they are completely engaged with what they are doing, and this is often called a ‘flow state'. As you might imagine, then, the practice of mindfulness will only enhance your skill as a combatant and as an athlete. And in fact, there is a similar term used within the context of CBT: ‘choiceless awareness'. Being Aware of Your Body Just as mindfulness and meditation can help you to improve your physicality, so to can being more physical help you to be more mindful. This is because focusing on our bodies will take focus away from our monologue. Simply try being aware of your distribution of weight, of your breathing, of your temperature – and you'll find that instantly you become far more ‘present' and much closer to mindfulness and choiceless awareness.

'You're filming something. That's kind of the purpose, right?' From the dizzy heights of Borat (2006) and Jackass (2002), to the pandemic-inflected How to With John Wilson (2020), Bad Trip (2020) and slightly disappointing Borat 2 (2020), the twenty-first-century can't get enough of comedy that blends reality and the scripted. Perhaps the most successful of these productions is Nathan For You (2013-17), the show where Nathan Fielder uses his 'knowledge to help struggling small business owners make it in this competitive world', blending cringe-comedy and reality TV to create a light-hearted but prickly satire on American business and media culture. But with its final episode, 'Finding Frances' (2017), Nathan For You pulls us into a newly touching realm, where the line between construction and reality is thinner than ever. How does our fixation with the authentic reflect on our culture of constant performance, where social media makes us all into hidden-camera comedians? Is a 'New Sincerity' possible, in film as in literature, as the culmination of artifice? And if something moves us, perhaps even moves us to change our world, does its authenticity matter?

In 1995, I was completely emerged in the Detroit rave scene. I wasn't always super social, as talking with people was never really in the cards for the evening. But, after the music was off there would be some milling about and at that point, I would meet a few people. Garrett McGrath was one of those people for me. I think we met by me commenting on his T-shirt, which I'm pretty sure was either a Tresor or Transmat shirt.... I can't remember exactly. From then on, I would see him out rather regularly and we would have quick chats and such. Eventually, I saw him on the 313 list on Hyperreal, as well. He at some point moved out to Los Angeles, and our paths stopped crossing regularly. We were never really close, but I always thought he was a cool guy. And when Snowprayers launched, he dropped me an email digging the concept and asked if he could do an edition. Since I've always known he had good taste in Techno, I had no doubt he would deliver a rock solid contribution for this series. So, thank you for tuning in yet again, and thank you to Garrett as well. I hope doing this reminded you of how much you miss Fall. (photo credit: Wayne Harrison)
