Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) will roll out 127 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country in a R40-million investment. As demand for EVs continues to grow, "ensuring robust infrastructure" for these vehicles is essential, says the local arm of the German car maker. MBSA is collaborating with Chargify, a Level 2 empowered company. The roll-out will include AC and fast-charging DC charging stations along the country's main routes and between metropolitan areas, as well as at airports, shopping malls, restaurant hubs, private hospitals, strategic expansion sites, residential estates and small towns throughout South Africa. "The partnership with Chargify not only gives us the opportunity to grow…the local EV charging network, but also reaffirms MBSA's ambition to expand its enterprise and supplier development (ESD) portfolio," says MBSA human resources and corporate affairs executive director Abey Kgotle. "Our ESD programme is aimed at making a real and lasting impact towards the transformation of the country through the creation of sustainable and meaningful jobs." This investment is also aimed at providing current customers with a reliable charging network, and instilling confidence in those considering the switch to EV ownership. MBSA's initial investment in the EQ charging network amounts to R15-million, with an additional R25-million earmarked for the second phase of the rollout. Phase 1 involves the installation of 67 Mercedes-Benz EQ branded charging stations across South Africa by the first quarter of next year. Phase 2 will add 60 additional charging stations, bringing the total to 127 EQ-branded charging stations. Locations already featuring the charging infrastructure include BT Ngebs Mall and Mayfair Hotel in Mthatha; Woodhill Estate and Country Club; Da Vinci Hotel in Sandton; Champagne Castle in the Drakensberg; Highwaymans in Pilgrims Rest; the Courtyard Sandton, and the Silvermist Wine Estate. Other locations currently in the installation phase include the Plettenberg Hotel; Wilderness Hotel; Swartberg Hotel, in Prince Albert; and Karoo Junction Mall in Beaufort West. While EQ customers can charge at any charge point in the country, they will benefit from a 10% discount when charging via the Chargify network. "Mercedes-Benz South Africa is accelerating the pace of eMobility transformation within the automotive industry," says MBSA co-CEO and Mercedes-Benz Cars executive director Mark Raine. "Next to offering the most extensive and diverse all-EV portfolio in the market, we want to provide not only our customers, but all EV drivers the luxury and peace of mind of a comprehensive charging network."

MERCEDES-BENZ EQS SUV PROTOTYPE TOWING "A prototype of an SUV version of the upcoming all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS was recently seen in Germany, when towing a trailer during tests. We don't know much about this vehicle, beside that it's based on the Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) platform (just like EQS, EQE and EQE SUV" says InsideEVs: "For sure it will be a large, luxury SUV, with a target range of up to 700 km (435 miles) in the WLTP test cycle. With trailer, we would expect maybe 200-250 miles. The EQS to be launched this year, but even this model is still undercover. The gains in amenity and efficiency can’t be sniffed at, but it leaves manufacturers reliant on semiconductor suppliers to get cars out the door. Over the past year, it’s become much more complicated — with many automakers having to slow production in the face of integrated circuit shortages that can be traced back to Spring of 2020" says the Hackaday.com website: "Automakers were forced to scale back production as factories closed to avoid spreading the deadly virus. This meant slashing orders with suppliers, particularly as the just-in-time nature of modern automobile production means there’s little to no space to warehouse excess parts in factories. Tier-one supplier Bosch have noted the shortage is particularly acute in parts used for engine and transmission control units." https://hackaday.com/2021/01/18/pandemic-chip-shortages-are-shutting-down-automotive-production/ FIRST LOOK AT TESLA’S NEW STRUCTURAL BATTERY PACK "Electrek obtained the first picture of Tesla’s new structural battery pack with a honeycomb architecture that will power its future electric vehicles. Currently, Tesla builds battery packs by combining cells into modules, which when put together form a battery pack. That battery pack is installed into the vehicle platform. The difference with this new concept is that Tesla is not using modules and instead builds the entire battery pack as the structural platform of the vehicle" according to electrek: "The structural battery pack is expected to be first used in the Model Y that is going to be built at Gigafactory Berlin and in the new Model S Plaid. The image shows the battery pack without the new 4680 cells in them – showcasing the honeycomb design of the pack" https://electrek.co/2021/01/19/tesla-structural-battery-pack-first-picture/ SCANIA’S COMMITMENT TO BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLES The rapid development of electric solutions for heavy duty vehicles includes the fast advancement of battery technology in respect of energy storage capacity per kg. Charging time, charging cycles and economics per kg are improving rapidly. This means these solutions will become more cost effective, primarily in repetitive and predictable applications. They will gradually overtake Scania’s industry-leading fossil and biofuel powered solutions in most transport applications. The company has already launched a fully electric truck as well as a plug-in hybrid truck. In a few years’ time, Scania plans to introduce long-distance electric trucks that will be able to carry a total weight of 40 tonnes for 4.5 hBy 2025, Scania expects that electrified vehicles will account for around 10 percent or our total vehicle sales volumes in Europe and by 2030, 50 percent of our total vehicle sales volumes are expected to be electrified.ours, and fast charge during the drivers’ compulsory 45-minute rest. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2021/01/scania_commitment_battery.html MIAMI-DADE STARTS TRANSITION TO ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS FLEET "Miami-Dade County Public Schools has made the decision to convert its fleet from diesel buses into an electric fleet. This push was driven by Holly Thorpe, a middle school student who used her science fair project to convince the school board that this switch was necessary." says CleanTechnica: "Superintendent Alberto Carvalho shared the good news with Thorpe that the district was applying for federal grant money from the $2.8 billion settlement fund that was a result of the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal. “We’re finally going to turn the yellow school bus green,” Thorpe said. “Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gases. Electric school buses are essential for the health of students and drivers.” https://cleantechnica.com/2021/01/18/miami-dade-starts-transition-to-electric-school-bus-fleet/ VERMONT HAD THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF PUBLIC EV CHARGERS PER CAPITA IN US IN NOVEMBER 2020 "The number of public electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the country has been growing. A NEW 32GWH GIGAFACTORY WILL BUILD SUSTAINABLE BATTERIES IN NORWAY "The Norwegian company Morrow Batteries is going to establish a new gigafactory, which will be located in the strategic Agder county. Their aim is to “revolutionize battery production and establish a more sustainable supply to European car makers”." reports Forbes: "Works will start next year. With a total capacity of 32 gigawatt-hour, the factory will consist of four equal modules of 8 gigawatt-hour. The first section is planned to be ready in 2024 and will most likely use existing battery technology, while the others will be developing “the next generation battery cell technology”. Morrow’s lithium sulfur batteries will use deposed materials from the Norwegian oil industry. The production will then differentiate from today’s usual chain, which requires rare minerals and 97% of which takes place on coal fueled plants in China, Japan and South Korea." https://www-forbes-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.forbes.com/sites/emanuelabarbiroglio/2020/05/29/a-new-32gwh-gigafactory-will-build-sustainable-batteries-in-norway/amp/ MERCEDES-BENZ SHOWS ITS BATTERY PACK PLANT IN KAMENZ "Mercedes-Benz has put the foundation under its electrification offensive with an investment of over €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in nine battery plants in seven locations on three continents. The first and main site is Kamenz near Dresden (Germany) where the company has two plants operated by its wholly-owned subsidiary Deutsche Accumotive - first since 2012, and the new, bigger one since 2018." Says InsideEVs: " The cumulative production of xEVs (BEVs, PHEVs, HEVs) battery packs already exceeded 500,000 and soon, the new plant in Kamenz is expected to produce 500,000 packs annually. Some of them are for conventional hybrids Mercedes-Benz EQ Boost, some for plug-in hybrids (EQ Power) and some for new all-electric models (Mercedes-Benz EQ like the EQC). The manufacturing lines are highly automated and quite amazing, but the plant still employs a lot of people - some 1,300." "Producing this highly complex lithium-ion battery requires multiple production lines that are approximately 170 meters long, each with more than 30 production stations and with a high number of production steps. Absolute precision is necessary to manufacture the battery systems consisting of 384 battery cells and many other components. The battery cells, for example, are welded with a laser with a tolerance of only 2µm using modern automation technology." https://insideevs.com/news/425847/mercedes-benz-battery-pack-plant-kamenz/ TESLA CEO ELON MUSK GETS $780 MILLION PAYDAY "Tesla Inc. said In a regulatory filing Thursday that CEO Elon Musk had earned the first portion of a huge performance-based stock options package that ties his pay to Tesla's valuation. " writes TheStreet.com: "Musk was granted 1,688,670 Tesla stock options with an exercise prices of $350.02, according to the filing, and Musk can exercise the options as of today. Under those terms, the stock would net about $780 million based on Thursday's closing price of $805.81. The award was contingent upon Tesla reaching and maintaining a market capitalization of $100 billion. For the remaining milestones, Tesla's market cap must continue growing in $50 billion increments, and ultimately reach $650 billion, for Musk to receive the full potential payout." https://www.thestreet.com/investing/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-sees-780-million-payday TESLA IS SPEEDING UP PRODUCTION AND INSTALLATIONS OF SUPERCHARGER V3 "Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla’s slower deployment of Supercharger V3 was due to production, but it is now ramping up. Musk said that he wants the Supercharger network to cover “95% to 100% of the population in all active markets.” Reports Fred at electrek: "Last year, Tesla finally launched the new version of its Supercharger (V3) to enable a new top charge rate of 250kW. But it didn’t enable the anticipated acceleration of Supercharger deployment. In fact, Tesla is still building new stations with the previous Supercharger technology to this day. Now Musk has confirmed on Twitter that Tesla was still ramping up production of Supercharger V3 and that it will now “speed up”." According to Supercharge.info, Tesla has currently at least 93 stations under construction and over 120 in the permitting phase. At an average of 8.8 Superchargers per station, it would mean almost 2,000 new Tesla Superchargers." https://electrek.co/2020/05/29/tesla-speeding-up-production-supercharger-v3/ UL CERTIFIES LUMEN GROUP’S WIRELESS CHARGING SYSTEM "Product safety watchdog UL has certified Lumen Group’s wireless EV power transfer system to the UL 2750 standard (Outline of Investigation for Wireless Power Transfer Equipment for Electric Vehicles). The Lumen Freedom wireless power transfer system uses resonant inductive magnetic coupling between a ground-mounted transmitting pad and a vehicle-mounted receiving pad to charge with no wires, and no physical contact between the vehicle and the charger." Says ChargedEVs: "Lumen Group worked with UL’s engineers and lab technicians to test the safety and performance of its wireless charging equipment, including the power source, the ground pad assembly and the attached vehicle assembly." https://chargedevs.com/newswire/ul-certifies-lumen-groups-wireless-charging-system/ HUBER+SUHNER LAUNCHES THE RADOX HPC500 CHARGING SYSTEM "HUBER+SUHNER, a global supplier of electrical and optical connectivity solutions, has launched the RADOX HPC500 – a new addition to the RADOX high-power charging portfolio. The company says it is the world’s first cooled charging cable system that allows continuous charging at 500 A, even in high-temperature environments." According to NGTNews.com: "The HPC500 cable and connector builds on the design of the HPC400 family, as well as the extensive field experience and continuous innovation in cooled cable solutions for EV charging stations. Several improvements and new features make the system ready for existing and future requirements. These enhancements include continuous 500 A charging, an IP67 connector protection rating, the option of a ready-to-use metering system and replaceable contacts for longer service life. Alongside the cooled cable system, HUBER+SUHNER has also developed a new 24 V cooling unit to increase cooling capacity and reduce operational temperatures of the power lines, enabling continuous 500 A charging at environmental temperatures of up to 50℃ The new plug-and-play cooling unit, which is pre-filled with coolant, fits into existing charging stations, significantly reducing installation time. The speed of both the ventilators on the heat exchanger and the coolant pump is automatically adjusted to achieve the most efficient performance, with normal operating levels requiring lower speed, significantly reducing noise level." https://ngtnews.com/hubersuhner-launches-the-radox-hpc500-charging-system E5 CONSORTIUM TO DEVELOP ZERO-EMISSION VESSEL "Seven companies in Japan have joined forces to establish the e5 Consortium to create zero-emission electric vessels. In the first phase of the project, the partners plan to launch the world’s first zero-emission electric tanker powered by lithium-ion batteries in March 2022. The five values of e5 are electrification, environment, evolution, efficiency and economics. The consortium says it wants to promote sustainable growth of coastal shipping in Japan." According to Electric Hybrid Marine Technology: "It says that Japan suffers from an aging maritime workforce and aging vessels, while the shipping industry needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions." https://www.electrichybridmarinetechnology.com/news/power-and-propulsion/e5-consortium-to-develop-zero-emission-vessel.html BLUEINDY ELECTRIC CARS WILL BE REPURPOSED — OR CRUSHED "After roughly five years of existence, the BlueIndy electric car-sharing program in Indianapolis had accrued only about 3,000 members. For those keeping track of the balance sheet, that wasn't nearly enough to be a realistically successful business. The innovative program that launched in September 2015 did not go as planned, and it has shuttered operations as a result." Writes Autoblog: "Despite more than 180,000 rides completed, the demand did not meet expectations. The closure leaves the questions of what will happen to the cars, the built-in chargers, as well as program's dedicated parking. According to Fox 59 and WTHR, at least 30-40 vehicles with various levels of body damage ended up in an Indianapolis scrapyard. The shells were spotted stacked on top of each other in neat rows. The batteries and powertrains of these vehicles, if functional, will be repurposed. Furthermore, the cars that were not damaged will be shipped to Los Angeles and used for BlueLA, the company's other American ridesharing program." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/31/blueindy-shared-electric-cars-scrapped/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK What are your desired specs for an electric pick-up truck?
At Mercedes, we’re experts when it comes to motorsports. The Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) and Benz & Cie companies were among the participants in the first auto race in history, which was held in 1894 on a route between Paris and Rouen. We’ve participated in the Formula 1 races since 1954, and in 2019 we entered the ABB FIA Formula E championship. Some might suppose that this isn’t much of a challenge for us after 125 years of making motorsports history. But the fact is that Formula E is a completely new challenge even for our experienced colleagues.
Show #571 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 5th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. MERCEDES-BENZ EQC GETS FIVE-STAR SAFETY RATING FROM EURO NCAP Euro NCAP released the safety ratings of seven car models including Mercedes-Benz’s first electric SUV the EQC. The EQC turns out to be very strong in adult and child occupant safety: Adult Occupant - 96% Child Occupant - 90% Vulnerable Road Users - 75% Safety Assist - 75% "Mercedes-Benz enters the all-electric market with the fully-electric compact luxury SUV EQC. This is the first of Daimler’s EQ range, and its rating augers well, with a five-star rating and good all-round performance. The EQC is part of a growing trend towards battery electric vehicles and joins Jaguar’s I-Pace and Audi’s e-tron amongst the cars that Euro NCAP has tested, and Tesla’s Model X, which will be assessed later this year. https://insideevs.com/news/368786/mercedes-benz-eqc-5-star-euro-ncap/ MERCEDES-BENZ TEASES EQS ELECTRIC SEDAN "Mercedes-Benz moves forward with its Mercedes-Benz EQ electric subbrand by teasing a new model ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show. It appears to be the EQS, which would be an all-electric S-Class counterpart. Electric luxury without compromises." says Motor1.com: "We already saw a few reports about the EQS coming, including spy photos of a camouflaged prototype, but there are no details. For sure we can expect long-range and specs even better than in the case of the Mercedes-Benz EQC - the first in the EQ lineup. 500 km (310 miles) of WLTP range would be a must we guess, just like at least 150 kW charging." https://insideevs.com/news/368703/mercedes-benz-teased-eqs/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all- TESLA TRANSPORTS MODEL 3 RHD UNITS TO PHILADELPHIA PORT FOR FASTER UK TRANSIT "Several semi-truck loads of Tesla Model 3 right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicles are on their way from the company’s headquarters in California to the Port of Philadelphia for transit to UK customers. This alternative route of travel will reportedly provide quicker delivery times than the usual path that takes the all-electric cars around the western part of the country via the Port of San Francisco and through the Panama Canal. Tesla’s strategy could help increase its Q2 2019 delivery numbers and possibly provide cost savings from the shorter delivery distances traveled." reports TEslarati: The quicker transit looks to save about two weeks from Tesla’s shipping time, as detailed in a report published by XAutoWorld. The usual San Francisco to the Port of Zeebrugge (Belgium) route is around 10,600 nautical miles with an average shipping time of 24 days, depending on a few variables. The distance from Philadelphia to Zeebrugge is about 4,000 nautical miles with a travel time of around 10 days." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-transports-model-3-rhd-units-to-philadelphia-port-for-faster-uk-transit/ HYUNDAI MOTORSPORT OFFERS SECOND SNEAK PEEK AT FIRST EV RACE CAR "Hyundai Motorsport is really excited about its first electric car envisioned for racing and released a second video teaser ahead of its unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 10." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The teaser is focused around the power and electricity, which probably heralds hundreds of kW of power and some crazy performance. The video description says: "He's always said the Hyundai i30 N TCR was like his child. And now he's created a monster! FIA WTCR winner Gabriele Tarquini gives life to the first Hyundai electric race car. All will be revealed on September 10 at IAA in Frankfurt." https://insideevs.com/news/368706/hyundai-motorsport-sneak-peek-ev-race-car/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all- MCLAREN RULES OUT ELECTRIC HYPERCAR BECAUSE IT WOULD BE TOO HEAVY "McLaren has dabbled in electrifying its vehicles before. Remember the P1, McLaren’s limited-edition plug-in hybrid? It’s pictured above. McLaren built 375 examples over about two years and has yet to return to the battery-powered performance. That doesn’t mean McLaren isn’t exploring alternative powertrain options." according to Anthony at MOtor1: "In a new interview with Motoring.com.au, Jamie Corstorphine, McLaren’s global marketing director, said the company is exploring a fully electric offering; however, the company wouldn’t produce one until it could promise it’d be a better sports car. It doesn't want to offer one simply to meet new emission standards or another benchmark. That means McLaren’s pursuit of lightness won’t go away with an electric hypercar. " https://www.motor1.com/news/368722/no-mclaren-electric-hypercar-yet/ LAMBORGHINI UNVEILS SUPERCAR WITH SUPERCAPACITORS "Lamborghini has its “most powerful car ever produced,” the Sián, and they did so by creating a novel hybrid powertrain with supercapacitors. Supercapacitors are unlike electrochemical batteries. They can charge and discharge in just seconds, but the drawback is that most of them have low energy density and can’t store enough energy to be viable for a product like an electric car." writes Fred at Electrek: "Lamborghini, who hasn’t been quick to adopt electric technology, has been at the forefront of using supercapacitors in its supercars. Now the Sián is the latest example of how the automaker is adopting the technology by being “the world-first application of a supercapacitor for hybridization.” Lamborghini says this of their supercapacitor: "It is three times more powerful than a battery of the same weight and three times lighter than a battery producing the same power. Located in the bulkhead between cockpit and engine it ensures perfect weight distribution. The electric system with the supercapacitor and e-motor weighs only 34 kg, thus it delivers a remarkable weight-to-power ratio" https://electrek.co/2019/09/04/lamborghini-sian-supercar-supercapacitors/ HONDA E TO APPEAR IN 2 VERSIONS – UP TO 220 KM RANGE "Honda will present its first electric model for the European market in serial production at the IAA and is teasing photos of the final version in advance. Furthermore, the Japanese manufacturer stated they plan to mention previously unknown details." says electrive: "The electric motor of the Honda e will be available in two power ratings of 100 kW and 113 kW, with a torque of 315 Nm each. The 35.5 kWh battery is intended to provide a range of up to 220 kilometres – Honda had previously mentioned 200 kilometres. The technical data, however, are still internal data of the manufacturer. With these key data and the CCS rapid charging capability, the Honda e certainly offers more than sufficient driving performance for its intended purpose as a commuter vehicle. Honda currently estimates fuel consumption at 18 to 20 kWh per 100 kilometers – even the more powerful BMW i3, which is less aerodynamic due to its height, achieves better values." https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/04/honda-e-to-appear-in-2-versions-up-to-220-km-range/ RENAULT UNVEILS UK PRICING AND SPECIFICATION FOR NEW ZOE The new all-electric Renault ZOE will be available to order from mid-September, with prices starting at just £18,670 and customer deliveries from January 2020. Seven years after the release of its best-selling predecessors, New ZOE has evolved in quality and technology to offer superior features while remaining affordable. To celebrate the launch of Mercedes-Benz EQ -- a new electric vehicle -- OK Go front man, Damian Kulash joins Innovation Crush and discusses the creation of the Stress Inversion Transformer (SIT). Damian's vision in exploring "EQ" was to figure out away to turn negative energy into positive energy. So naturally (and because science), he built a booth that allows humans to exactly that. Along the way we discuss personal brand, the creative process, the SIT's upcoming world tour, and answer a few audience questions.
In 2017, MBFW launched the #mbcollective Fashion Story in three chapters. Aiming to show Mercedes-Benz’ on-going commitment to championing emerging fashion talent and engaging with the industry, the theme for all three chapters was: “Generation Now, Generation Next” – which accompanied Mercedes-Benz EQ, the new generation brand for electric mobility.
