Happy Mid-Autumn Festival, everybody! Do you know why we eat mooncakes today? It all comes from the old story of Chang'e, Goddess of the Moon… Chang'e was married to Hou Yi, a famous hero. Back then there were ten suns in the sky, which made the earth way too hot! So Hou Yi shot nine of them down with his arrows. The gods gave Hou Yi a magic drink, which could make him live forever! But he didn't want to live forever without his wife, so he did not drink it. But Chang'e drank the whole thing! Then she flew up to the moon, to live there. Every night Hou Yi would put all of Chang'e's favorite desserts outside for her to see. She really liked mooncakes! Which is why we still have them at Mid-Autumn festival today. Everyone tells this story a little differently… In some stories Chang'e has a rabbit, who is her best friend. In others the gods change Chang'e into a big fat ugly toad for stealing! Which story do you know? It is seen as a symbol of luck, prestige and intelligence by the local Vietnamese people and believed to appear on special occasions. The Ky Lan is quite similar to the Chinese mythical creature the Qilin and is said to be inspired by it and brought to Vietnam by traders and wandering hermits. In Vietnamese mythology, the Ky Lan is said to be part of the four benevolent animals - Long (Dragon), Quy (Turtle) and Phượng Hoàng (Pheonix).Similar one horned hybrid creatures are also present across Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Thai mythologies.Unsurprisingly the unicorn's appearance can vary depending on the region where the stories come from and they are often represented as a hybrid-creature comprised of a multitude of other animals.Version 1: The feet and horn of a deer, the ears of a dog, the forehead of a camel, the eyes of an eagle, the nose of a lion, the mouth of a crocodile, the body of a horse, and the tail of a bull.Version 2:  a musk deer with huge horns, a tiger's mouth, a catfish's moustache, fishlike fins on its body, and a bull's rail and hooves.Version 3: The head of a dragon and the body of horse.Ky Lan is also known as Qilin in China, Kirin in Japan, Girin in Korea and Gilen in Thailand. It is believed that the Ky Lan is an animal that brings luck, happiness, and longevity. It is also known to be kind and gentle and will not step on grass or on insects. It is also believed that the Ky Lan will never drink dirty water. The appearance of the Ky Lan is supposed to bring good luck, prosperity and good fortune. Carvings of the creature can be found at the entrances to palaces, temples and pagoda as it is considered to have the power to protect these structures from bad spirits. The Lion Dance which is performed at the Vietnamese festivals like the Lunar New Year and the Mid Autumn festival is dedicated to the Ky Lan. Although many Asian countries have the Lion Dance as part of its traditions, the Vietnamese version is quite different. It is actually known as the Unicorn Dance where Ong Dia (the Earth God) comes down to earth to dance with the unicorns. These traditions are still alive even today and celebrated with much fanfare.Read about the Ky Lan at https://mythlok.com/ky-lan/

Important Days (Festivals) in 2022   Source: https://goldcard.nat.gov.tw/en/why-taiwan/top-6-traditional-festivals-in-taiwan/   春節Spring Festival (CNY or Lunar New Year) 2/1 Spring Festival is the most important festival and the longest national holiday in Taiwan, beginning on December 30th (New Year's Eve) and ending on the fourth day of the first month of the lunar calendar. On the Western calendar, the dates fall around mid-January to mid-February. Lantern Festival 2/15 The Lantern Festival happens on the first full moon of the Lunar New Year. Traditional customs include carrying paper lanterns, solving riddles written on lanterns and eating tangyuan (glutinous rice balls stuffed with sweet paste made from red bean, sesame, or peanut butter).   清明節Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day) 4/5 Qingming Festival is celebrated on April 5th or 6th of every year, and is one of the few festivals that roughly coincide with the Western calendar. As the festival is close to the Children's Day holiday on April 4th, it is the second longest national holiday in Taiwan, causing many locals to take a continuous holiday of up to five days. On this day, it is customary for Taiwanese families to pay respects and commemorate their ancestors by visiting and cleaning their gravesites.   端午節Dragon Boat Festival 6/3 Nowadays, in celebration of Dragon Boat Festival, people will eat zongzi and race dragon boats to honor and commemorate the great Qu Yuan. Other customs also include: hanging mug wort and calamus to ward off evil spirits and cleanse the environment, balancing an egg for good luck, drinking realgar wine and wearing incense sachets to ward off evil and sickness.   七夕Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine's Day) 8/4 While Western countries celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14th, many Asian countries celebrate this holiday on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar; the day when Niulang (Cowherd) and Zhinü (Weaver Maiden) can meet in heaven. Mid-Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) 9/10 Nowadays, many East Asian countries of celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival by eating mooncakes. In Taiwan, Mid-Autumn is also known as the Barbecue Festival, where in addition to eating moon cakes, barbecuing is also an essential activity. Which festival is your favorite? Why? There was one guy walking his pet pig — he'd had it for five months, he said — which had its snout pressed to the ground, hoovering the tarmac for fallen sweets, treats or dried meats. Source article: http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2020/01/18/2003729416   Next Article   Topic: EPA steps up checks for carcinogenic industrial dye in Mid-Autumn mooncakes   With the Mid-Autumn Festival nearly upon us, bakery shelves are heaving with a vast array of appetizing mooncakes in a mind-boggling variety of shapes, sizes and flavors. For many Taiwanese gourmands, the venerable egg yolk pastry is a special favorite. However, in the past some unscrupulous businesses were discovered to have added the harmful industrial dye Sudan Red G to their egg yolk pastries to give the salty egg yolks a rosy-red luster. Sudan Red G was classified as a toxic chemical by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) in July 2018. The administration says it has been carrying out inspections since the ban but has not discovered any illegal use of Sudan Red G. However, with increased demand for egg yolk pastries during the festive season, the administration says it will intensify inspection work during the period. In the past, some egg farms would add the carcinogenic substance to duck feed in order to give their salted duck eggs a deep color and luster. In 2017, the illegal use of Sudan Red G was detected in an online retailer's salted egg yolk mooncakes. The poultry farm which supplied the egg yolks was required to cull its duck population and destroy its stock of duck eggs. Fraud charges were also brought against the farm. The following year, the EPA classified Sudan Red G as a category 4 toxic chemical. Sudan Red G is in fact an umbrella term for a series of related chemical dyes that sound similar but have different molecular structures, chiefly Sudan Red I, II, III and IV, and Sudan Red 7B and G. Because the molecular structure of the Sudan Red G dye is easily soluble in oils, it is often used in industrial settings such as colorant in furniture paint, shoe polish, floor wax, car wax and oils to give products a rich color and luster. Sudan Red G's unique properties — inexpensive, easy-to-obtain, stable, and color-fade resistant — mean that it often crops up in food safety incidents. In addition to salted egg yolks, outside of Taiwan Sudan Red G has been found to have been added to chilli sauce and chilli powder; however, the group of dyes with which Sudan Red G shares a common molecular structure are listed as category 3 carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. EPA Toxic and Chemical Substances Bureau Director-General Hsieh Yein-rui advises consumers not to choose food products that appear overly vivid and bright, or that look unnatural. Hsieh adds that the nutritional value of egg yolks is the same whether they are yellow or red in color, and warns that customers who select egg-containing products on the basis of their bright luster may well be consuming adulterated egg yolks. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/09/19/2003764584

It's a no-holds barred, unplugged, unrehearsed conversation with John & Heyang on the ways that the Covid-19 virus has been dealt with in both the United States and China. Heyang points out that recently, nearly 637 million trips were made across China during the eight-day Mid-Autumn holiday, and there haven't been any domestic cases of Covid-19 that allowed the travel restrictions to be lifted. John insists that the lack of similar response in America, is an indicator that many people are more about "me" than "we."

On this week's episode, we begin ̣(1:22) with a chat about mooncakes, the traditional treats of the just-passed Mid-Autumn Festival. What do we make of new novelty varieties (Oreo mooncakes, anyone?), and where do these pastries stand in Vietnamese society in 2019? Then (21:33), we speak to Michitake Aso, associate professor at the University of Albany-SUNY and author of the 2018 book 'Rubber and the Making of Vietnam.' In this extended interview, Aso discusses the brutality of colonial-era rubber plantations in southern Vietnam, the environmental and social impacts this industry still has today, and more. As always, we end with Bánh Mì Banter (1:09:20).

To be clear, right from the start, the point of this week's episode is not to call Robert Olen Butler a fraud. In fact we both quite enjoyed his story, "Mid-Autumn," from his 1992 collection, A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain. But it occurred to us that if this book were published today, it might get a few more sideways glances, since it's a white American author telling the first-person stories of Vietnamese immigrants and refugees. So we thought it could be a good jumping-off point for a discussion of where those lines are. Should writers be able to tell whatever stories they want, as Lionel Shriver famously argued last year? At what point should we be concerned about issues of cultural appropriation? In the second half of the show, we talk about the case of Michael Derrick Hudson, who in 2015 set off a lit-world firestorm when he admitted he'd submitted a poem to a bunch of journals using a fake Chinese name. One of those poems was eventually selected by Sherman Alexie to be part of the Best American Poetry anthology for that year, at which point Hudson came clean, and Alexie did some soul-searching. Thanks for listening! Come on back next week!
