What could have been a small one-day story about disagreements around the table at Stratford city council has become emblematic of a bigger issue. Aside from the fine line between criticism of our civic leaders and outright threatening behaviour, there's also a question about whether their mayor and council are being as open and transparent as it should be, and one man - famously - has his doubts. Members from Get Concerned Stratford have appeared on this podcast before. The group itself was born out of concerns around Stratford council's efforts to approve the construction of a controversial glass plant in the city. But the circumstances that led to the Xinyi controversy lingered, even with a new council, and it all seemed to come together at a council meeting on February 26. At that meeting, there was a report about the use of closed meeting protocols that showed Stratford council was frequently making decisions in-camera, but attention instead went to a matter of zoning where two delegates - Mike Sullivan and Barb Shaughnessy - were accused of making statements that were allegedly threatening and disrespectful. They both got three-month bans from council and that's where the controversy - and this podcast - really begins! Sullivan joins us this week to tell us about what happened at the February 26 meeting, how he learned that he was temporarily banned from council and what happened the first time he showed up anyway. He will also tell us about his efforts to learn more about what goes on in closed meetings, the repeatedly failed attempts to get the ban lifted, and where the battle goes now that the ban has expired. Also, where's the fine line between legitimate criticism and an ad hominem attack? So let's look at what's going on in Stratford with this week's Guelph Politicast! Some late breaking news at Monday council's meeting it was unanimously decided that the Respectful Workplace Policy would be reviewed by staff, but only two members of council voted to suspend the policy. You can learn more about Get Concerned Stratford at their website here. You can find links to the videos of council meetings at the City of Stratford at their website. Apartment 73, first floor. Valera lies in his bed, staring at the ceiling. His left leg is sticking out from under the blanket as usual. The scents of damp soil and lilac waft in from the street. The rain drums on the leaves of a young maple in the front yard. In that social network that Valera now visits only once every couple of months, a notification popped up about the birthday of someone he met only once, about ten years ago, and now he cannot calm down. That evening used to exist in his memory in the finest detail, but now it's like a series of random snapshots: a long strand of his date's hair, that she kept tucking behind her ear, the broadcast of the «Milan»-«Lazio» football match in the bar (the «Rossoneri» won 3:1, if he recalls correctly), and a recently painted dark-brown bench – they almost landed on it when they were already quite tipsy. Valera can't shake the question «I wonder if she ever thought about that meeting in August? Maybe on her way home in a taxi or just like this — in her bedroom on an early weekend morning?». There is a magical pill that could distract him from such pointless questions — xinyi mix for 5/8: radio. But unfortunately, he doesn't even know it exists. So he continues to lie in bed, staring at the ceiling, with his left leg still sticking out from under the blanket.

The market bounced back from early losses on Tuesday, to close the first trading session of 2023 in positive territory, but turnover remained thin amid investor worries over a possible global recession this year. The bellwether electronics sector led the rebound, while old economy and new energy sector stocks also attracted buying on the back of government efforts to push renewable power development. **Tainan City Council Speaker Questioned in Vote-Buying Probe ** Newly-elected Tainan City Council Speaker Qiu Li-li has been questioned in connection with an investigation into vote buying. According to the Tainan District Prosecutors' Office, Qiu was questioned after authorities searched her residence and over 20 other locations. Those locations included the homes of Deputy Speaker Lin Zhi-zhan as well as city councilors Li Wen-chun, Zhang Shi-xian and Li Zhen-guo. Prosecutors says they opened the investigation into allegations of electoral manipulation after receiving a tip-off in November. Qiu beat incumbent Speaker Guo Hsin-liang in a vote on December 25 after in which Li Wen-chun, Zhang Shi-xian and Li Zhen-guo all broke party ranks with the K-M-T to back the D-P-P nominee. Reports at the time speculated that the three then-KMT councilors had been bribed. **Eslite to Close 24-hour Branch in Taipei's Xinyi District in December ** Eslite has confirmed that its 24-hour branch in Taipei's Xinyi District will close its doors in December. According to the bookstore chain, the pending (待辦的) closure comes after it failed to convince its landlord to extend the existing lease. Eslite says it will continue to promote (推廣) culture and humanities in Taiwan and provide a 24-hour service - and there is speculation that its nearby Songyan store will become Eslite's and Taiwan's only 24-hour bookstore. However, there has been no official confirmation of those reports. The Xinyi store first opened 24-hours a day in mid-2020 after the Eslite Dunnan store was closed. **China Criticizes COVID19 Requirements on Travelers ** The Chinese government has sharply criticized COVID-19 testing requirements being imposed on visitors from China and threatening countermeasures against countries involved. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said at a daily briefing Tuesday that China believes the entry restrictions adopted by some countries targeting passengers from China lack scientific basis. China abruptly (突然) eased strict anti-virus measures in December, leading to a surge in cases. Countries including the U.S., U.K., India, Japan and several European nations have announced tougher measures on travelers from China. Many are worried about a lack of data from China and fear that new variants may spread. **NYC Machete Attacker to be Arraigned ** The 19-year-old accused on attacking 3 police officers with a machete near Times Square on New Years Eve is expected to be arraigned (傳訊) tomorrow, meanwhile his mother reached out to police last month to express concerns about him. EpisodeWe talked about finding your passions, creativity, being creative and loving art but not making it a career intentionally and the journey she took to become a creative chimera nomad.  More about XinYi Tan:I was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and moved with my family to Dallas, Texas at age 7. My first couple of years in school were a huge struggle. English was not my first language and entering 2nd grade after skipping almost a year of school due to the move made making friends quite difficult. But even after learning English,I never felt quite at home... anywhere.Culturally, I wasn't fully American, but when my family and I visited Malaysia, I was painfully aware that I didn't quite belong there either. When it came to my passions, I could never make up my mind on a specific creative outlet or medium to hone — not because of indecisiveness (ok, maybe a little bit), but because I find joy in learning, remixing, and over-complicating mixed-media projects. But before I found pride in calling myself a creative chimera, I was hopelessly lost in how to identify my art and therefore myself. Being aromantic meant that I couldn't relate to 99% of the stories represented in pop culture. In short, I thought I was an alien. With every friend that I've found (who listened to me wholeheartedly and confided in me sincerely), I began to feel less and less alien and more and more at home on Earth.  I began to feel like I belonged. XinYi's InstagramDon't Be Strangers WebsiteDon't Be Strangers SpotifyDon't Be Strangers Apple Don't be Strangers Instagram"Don't Be Strangers is a community + podcast that focuses on fighting social isolation via stories of everyday people! You may remember Xinyi, a Chinese glass manufacturer that wanted to try and build a plant just next door in Guelph/Eramosa Township. All but one of the township's councillors rejected the proposal in the wake of wide-spread public outcry about the effect on the local environment, especially the water supply, and that seemed to be the end of that. It wasn't. The story then moved to Stratford. Last fall, it was announced that Xinyi was trying again in the Festival City, and this time they had a Ministerial Zoning Order in hand. Typically, and MZO is meant to be used in the event of an emergency, or for projects of provincial significance, but according to Environmental Defence, more MZOs were handed out in 2020 than in the previous 20 years combined. One of those MZOs was intended for Xinyi's new plant. MZOs have been the great boogeyman for activists lately as they override the normal planning processes and timelines, and Stratford is just one of the places that is fighting back. An organization called Get Concerned Stratford organized, even though the Xinyi plant seemed like a done deal, but they still demonstrated, petitioned, delegated, and they forced Xinyi to put the entire project on pause. So does this mean public pressure still works? Melissa Verspeeten, who is a member and spokesperson for Get Concerned Stratford, will help us figure that out on this week's podcast. She will talk about her beginnings as an activist, and the political and planning conditions in Stratford that led to this project being proposed in the first place. Verspeeten will also talk about the difficulty in getting materials on the project, and Xinyi’s attempts to discredit Get Concerned. She will also discuss the future of her group, and what other groups can learn in their own local fights against MZOs.  So let's get back in the fight against Xinyi on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can learn more about Get Concerned Stratford and its activism via their website and social media pages. Xinyi is a fashion design graduate from RMIT Melbourne, and her best friend Qianku, a vegan scuba instructor understood that shopping at thrift stores can be a bit tedious due to the smell and dust, or most garments are either outdated or ill-fitted. She then goes into the role of live streaming in PDD's marketing efforts and defines the relationship that the company has with its various types of vendors and other strategic partners.“Live streaming is probably the number one industry buzzword this year as well as last year,” says Xin Yi. COVID-19, of course, had a big impact on the popularity (and necessity) of live streaming. For Pinduoduo, the key was to find the value in a live streaming product as opposed to releasing one for the sake of having a product. In particular, one of the goals in using live streaming is to drive conversion which, at its root, is a matter of building trust. According to Xin Yi, “Live streaming should be part of the shopping experience and not a distraction from it.”An MCN is a third-party service provider that has a collection of content providers, akin to such platforms as YouTube. These are intermediaries that brands turn to if they need ready-made solutions for content since every content creator has their own following or fanbase.C2M shortens the distance between consumers and manufacturers. “In essence,” says Xin Yi, “it is a differentiated way of thinking about how products are designed, made, and sold to consumers.” Traditionally, manufacturers do not have a direct connection to consumers and have inefficient systems for getting feedback on their products. Usually, focus groups are used when creating new products, and this process oftentimes causes quite a bit of delay. The concept of C2M takes advantage of the fact that much of the retail world has gone digital in the form of eCommerce, allowing for that direct interaction between consumers and manufacturers.“Longer-term, the momentum behind eCommerce penetration is still very strong. In terms of PDD's strategy, it has always been squarely focused on, ‘What do our users need and how can we provide the right products that they need for each category? How can we provide value as well as an interactive shopping experience to our 600+ million users?'”

Today on The Negotiation, we speak with Xin Yi Lim, Senior Director of Corporate Development at Pinduoduo and former Technology Analyst for GIC in Singapore and New York.Xin Yi discusses interactive eCommerce, a relatively new term that aims to reproduce the experience of offline shopping by “trying to understand human needs through the community that surrounds each and every one of us.” Pinduoduo has created a team purchase model on a mobile-first, mobile-only platform where, if you buy something with a friend or anybody else in your social network, you enjoy lower prices.According to Xin Yi, traditional eCommerce is “a targeted, solitary shopping behavior that is also ultimately efficiency-driven.” When we shop offline (i.e. at a mall), we typically have conversations with our companions when considering a purchase. This type of interaction and feedback is essentially absent when we shop online on a conventional eCommerce platform—no algorithm can match this element of human touch.Pinduoduo differentiates itself from other eCommerce platforms with their fundamental understanding that “people's needs can be very dynamic, and they can be influenced by those around them.” The company's goal is to create true value for money, both for consumers and merchants, by creating a platform that mimics the offline experience and quite literally takes the term “sharing economy” to a new level.Using data gathered from Pinduoduo's interactive eCommerce platform, certain trends emerged. There is now a tendency towards “rational consumption”, which means that consumers are ultimately looking for value-for-money goods. Xin Yi discusses the trend known as C2M or Consumer to Manufacturer. China, known for decades as having an export-driven economy, is now beginning to focus on manufacturing products that appeal to an increasingly savvy domestic market. Pinduoduo allows its brands to collect anonymous consumer feedback, and from this create better, more marketable products that expand existing markets, and even create new markets.COVID-19 has caused the sale of agricultural goods to skyrocket. These goods have always been available through Chinese eCommerce platforms, but they were “rediscovered” through necessity, by consumers. To further encourage and comfort online shoppers of agricultural goods, Pinduoduo began to conduct livestreams with farmers and other stakeholders demonstrating the quality of their products. Other newly popular verticals include fitness and culinary brands.
