Today, I can not wait to introduce you to Iman Oubou, an award-winning entrepreneur, author, published scientist, and former beauty queen (Miss New York US 2015 and 2nd Runner Up at the 2015 Miss United States pageant). Through her diverse experiences in business, pageantry, and STEM, Iman has noticed gender inequalities in the workforce and a pervasive bias in how women are portrayed in print and digital media. A dream of becoming a doctor and standing up against violence. This is a journey of strength and inner beauty. Florinda is gorgeous, a true beauty, but with an even more beautiful heart. She was crowned Miss New York USA 2019 and could see many wonderful opportunities open up. She describes herself as always being a tomboy and not wearing much makeup or wearing heels. She also had stage fright, so getting up on stage in heels and a bikini was way out of her comfort zone, but knew that if could do that, she can do anything. She describes the experience of running for Miss New York and how her mom was her biggest fan and supporter. She recalls how it was growing up Albanian American and sometimes feeling like an outsider with both cultures. She said that the Miss New York and the Miss USA competitions allowed her to grow and learn, and meet so many amazing women. To also understand what she wants in life and how she can give back, and help others, especially her own family.She speaks on her passion to be an emergency care doctor or a physicians assistant to help those dealing with trauma in different ways. She opens up about her life, her goals, her dreams, and so much more. She gives raw insight on the world around her and how she strives to be her authentic self. Gibau considers philanthropy being the core of who she is due to being an immigrant from Cape Verde and being born into poverty. My guest today is the reigning Miss New York USA 2020 and is also a former Miss Teen United States 2015 and Miss Earth USA 2017 where she placed in the top 16 at Miss Earth in the Philippines. Today, we talk about her pageant journey and her long journey as an immigrant.
Andreia Gibau is a first-generation immigrant to the United States. She was born in Cape Verde which is a group of 10 islands on the west coast of Africa, and her family moved to Brockton, Massachusetts when she was seven years old to have a future with better opportunities. Her family settled in Brockton, Massachusetts where Andreia grew up and experienced life. She speaks four languages with Portuguese being her first. Opportunities were abundant in Andreia’s life at a young age. She began modeling and acting at the age of 12. She has modeled for designers like Helen Castillo, Mori Lee and Mac Duggal.In high school, Andreia was part of the drama club. She was introduced to pageants in high school by a teacher, but held off on this opportunity for a few years. In 2013, Andreia moved to New York City to attend St. John’s University. This is where she obtained her Public Relations degree with a minor in fashion. At the age of 19 she won the Miss New York USA title and soon after took home the prestigious title of Miss USA 1995, the youngest to do so in a decade. She then moved to LA, to start a career in television in film. She quickly landed a series regular role on “Pacific Blue” for the USA Network, and also appeared in films, including THE WEDDING SINGER, and BIG MAMA’S HOUSE 2. In 2005, she starred in MTV’s hit series “Meet the Barkers.” The show allowed viewers into her life with then husband Travis Barker, documenting the couple’s daily life, including planning their wedding. Starring on the series also opened doors with other non-scripted programs, including “Dancing with the Stars” for ABC [2006]. Aside from scripted and non-scripted projects, She has experience in the hosting world, working with E! Entertainment and VH1, and appearing on “Bridalplasty,” “Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants,” and doing red carpet corresponding for The Academy Awards. Pageants however have remained a BIG part of her life as she is currently the executive producer for Miss Nevada and Utah USA pageants. I’ve been chasing her down for a few months, and finally connected with here, so excited to have Shanna Moakler on the podcast!
