Live from the no panic zone—I'm Steve Gruber—I am America's Voice— Delivering an Equitable and Socially Just news and talk program— using only sustainable topics that maintain maximum diversity and inclusion— and for the record no animals were harmed in the production of this program! Here are three big Things you need to know right now— ONE— Good news for beauty pageants—as Miss United States says they will not be allowing transgendered anyone to compete against actual women—call it what you want—its just common sense— TWO— The Hispanic vote turned out for Republicans—BUT not everywhere—the question is why not? They are turning red but not everywhere— THREE— The post mortems are now flying—and its time for an honest evaluation of President Donald Trumps influence on American voters— As one conservative put it recently—he has never been weaker than he is right now—and it makes you wonder if he will actually announce a run for President next week as he indicated he might— With control of the House and Senate still up in the air—in a cycle that was supposed to favor Republicans heavily—one of the criticisms on the former President—is that he endorses candidates that kiss the ring—and not the ones that can actually perform well in elections— Meanwhile the post mortem of a political upset—is continuing across the nation—
On today's combative pod, David and Sarah revisit the Stacey Abrams lawsuits and check in on the state of election laws. They then turn to the question of expressive activity and whether a state can force a beauty pageant to include transgender contestants. They conclude with an examination of Washington state's approach to "unconscious bias" in trials.Plus: the duo offers a few pronunciation meae culpae.Show Notes:-David on Stacey Abrams' election challenges-Green v. The Watauga County Board of Education can now achieve their goal to place a school resource officer in every school in the district after receiving a grant from the North Carolina Center for Safer Schools. According to the Watauga Democrat, over the years, the school board has made it a priority to increase the number of SRO's in Watauga schools. Superintendent Scott Elliot said he was proud of Watauga County Schools staff for working continually to find sources of funding. Elliot said “With the latest grant, each school will now be able to have a full time officer each day.” The grant provides enough funding to cover two-thirds of the cost per officer. The county commissioners fund the difference. In North Carolina news, a Forsyth County judge sealed a search warrant that Winston-Salem police detectives executed on a former nurse's house who has been accused of murdering two of his patients and attempting to kill a third. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, A search warrant for Jonathan Hayes' home was obtained on October 25. Judge Gregory Hayes signed an order on Wednesday to seal it due to concerns from the District Attorney's office over the integrity of the investigation being jeopardized if the warrant was made public. According to DA Jim O'Neill, Hayes administered a near-lethal dose of insulin to a 63-year-old patient and a lethal dose of insulin to a 60-year-old patient and a 61-year-old patient who died within days. Jonathan Hayes is being held without bond in Forsyth County Jail. His next court date is November 10. On Wednesday, a federal appellate court said the Miss United States of America pageant has a First Amendment right to exclude a transgender woman from competing. According to the Associated Press, the court said a transgender woman competing could interfere with the pageant's message stating “what it means to be a girl.” The ruling is in response to a lawsuit filed by Anita Green who said the pageant violated an Oregon state anti-discrimination law when they barred her from competing in 2019. The 9th circuit's three-judge panel voted 2-1 in favor of the organization. After a lower court sided with the pageant last year, Green said the case raised awareness about discrimination against transgender people within the pageant circuit. If there is one thing we all want a little more than world peace, it's Matt Rogers and comedian Joel Kim Booster to relive the Sandra Bullock masterpiece that is “Miss Congeniality.” Joining the movie club again this season, Joel and Matt rival mixed reviews for the film with their appreciation for every quotable moment and Bullock's endless number of dedicated pratfalls. Bullock plays an undercover FBI agent who transforms from one of the boys to become a pageant queen in order to investigate a bomb threat targeting the Miss United States beauty pageant. With effortless performances from the likes of Michael Caine and Candice Bergen to William Shatner and Benjamin Bratt, the film is as far-fetched as it is loveable. Thankfully, Joel - ever the Sandra enthusiast - uplifts moments that gracefully highlight Bullock as the versatile and fearless comedic actress that she is. Terri has been involved in pageantry since competing at age 16 and placing in the top 12 at the Miss Teenage California Scholarship Pageant. She subsequently went on to compete for the next 30 years in the Miss and Mrs. divisions of dozens of pageants. As a ‘Miss' contestant, she placed 1st runner up at the iconic Miss Hollywood pageant; she was a top 5 finalist for the Southern California preliminary for Miss World and later that year won the title of Miss La Palma. After a short break to marry and have 2 babies, she won the title of Mrs. California United States, placing in the top 15 at the Miss United States pageant; she went on, after the age of 50, to hold the titles of Mrs USA Earth and Mrs. Global Elite. She has been a mentor, coach, emcee, producer and director for contestants and pageants nationwide for 25 years, including founding and producing the Miss Greater Southern California pageant and is a nationally ranked pageant judge. She has coached hundreds of pageant contestants in every pageant system and age division all over the nation, in all areas of competition and specializing in the most difficult category- the Interview Competition. Born and raised in Long Beach California, she was a competitive gymnast from age 12 through her second year of college, where she studied Behavioral Science. After college, she entered the fitness industry, where she taught classes and managed fitness clubs, including managing exercise studios for the iconic Richard Simmons. Her favorite pastimes involve water- SCUBA diving, water skiing and whitewater rafting- and travel is her passion, but her greatest role in life has been raising her two adult daughters, Taryn and Brittany. We are talking all things FABULOUS:*Little girls- sugar, spice and everything nice… expectations and messages received by society, teachers, parents, church . Molding us in ways and belief systems about how girls ‘should be'. How the world has changed its views of gender roles since our childhoods. *The teen years- experiencing ‘firsts'- flirting with adulthood, getting our hearts broken and trying to figure out who we are. ….unsure of who we are- comparing ourselves to others- liking boys- OH BOY!- experimenting and risk taking- the pressure to be perfect- seeking autonomy.* The twenties and thirties- when the world judges us by our relationship status. Establishing ourselves and feeling we have to achieve certain goals. Timetables for milestones differ- this can make us afraid. Second guessing ourselves and our choices. Pleasing others above all. The potential for losing ourselves in motherhood.* Does life really begin at 40? The need to please begins to wane. Time to focus more on ourselves. Survived many ups and downs ( no one learns anything in the good times). Often in the ‘sandwich generation' between kids and aging parents, which can be daunting… girlfriends really matter. Coming to terms with society seeing us as ‘older'. * The fifties and beyond- everything we have been through up to this point has created who we are now. Society has changed its viewpoint of us. Redefining beauty on our own terms. The dichotomy of being more impatient yet more tolerant. More compassion and less appetite for BS. Wisdom kicks in. Courage kicks in. Today's fiftysomething is not our mothers' fiftysomething. Being afraid and doing it anyway. Bucket lists…. Mortality and limited time. Not waiting for others to make us happy. Taking risks. Comfortable in our sexuality. Support the show
