After National Signing Day's fireworks on Wednesday, the 2023 recruiting class is officially in the books. Today, Nate Bauer and Sean Fitz discuss the characteristics of the class and compare it to the top-five group from 2022. They'll also discuss the day's current events, including Mitchell Tinsley's performance during the all-star bowl circuit leading up to the NFL Draft and the impact of losing Juice Scruggs from the offensive line.  Subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated Daily Edition on YouTube and enable notifications, so you never miss an episode.  Before diving into today's football discussion, Fitz and Bauer discuss Penn State basketball's loss to Purdue on the road Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions shot poorly, but the Boilermakers poured on the heat early from deep and never looked back. Bauer discusses what he saw from the game and why Purdue had so much success from three.  Next, they discuss the Shrine Bowl, which takes place Thursday night. Scruggs and Tinsley are standouts from the week of practice, so the duo discusses their trajectory this draft season. Next, Fitz wants to highlight what Scruggs meant to the team last season.  Finally, they wrap up the class of 2023. Fitz gives his thoughts on the class and where its strengths lie. Maybe just as important, he looks at the areas that this group needs to improve. Then, he spins that forward to the Class of 2024 and points to the position groups Penn State needs to nail in this upcoming cycle to avoid a letdown at those positions.  Fitz and Bauer end the show with a lightning round, stacking the Class of 2022 and 2023 to compare the strengths of each group. They'll go position by position, and Fitz will pick a winner between the classes according to which group is stronger. Positions like quarterback and running back are apparent. But what about linebacker or safety? The Nittany Lions were strong in both cycles, so which group has the edge? Check out the show to find out.  Learn more about your ad choices. The Penn State offense sustained another loss last week when top receiver Parker Washington didn't play against Rutgers. Rumors of his season-ending injury turned out to be true on Tuesday when head coach James Franklin announced his season was over. Today on the BWI Daily Edition, host Thomas Frank Carr discusses how the loss of Washington changes the lineup for the worse and how he thinks Penn State should adjust for the final game of the regular season against Michigan State. He'll also give a preview of what Michigan State likes to do defensively and discuss the slow offensive start problem that the Nittany Lions have had this year. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube so you don't miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK T-Frank starts by reviewing the outcome of the game against Rutgers to ascertain how Penn State adjusted to the loss of Washington. He highlights how fellow starter Mitchell Tinsley's role changed, and KeAndre Lambert-Smith assumed a more significant role to pick up the slack. Fans saw how that played out and how Penn State adjusted throughout the game.  With the changes offensively, who does T-Frank think should see more playing time? He gives his case for returning Tinsley to his original role and letting another receiver assume the slot position vacated by Washington.   However, the loss of Washington doesn't explain that Penn State's offense has been exceedingly slow to put together drives and score points in games this season. So, T-Frank asked Franklin on Tuesday how the process of in-game adjustments works. He plays Franklin's answer and explains how that process has gone for the team this season. It underscores a problem in the passing game that T-Frank has pointed out several times in 2022 and gives more clarity to the problems that the team has had stringing together plays.  Finally, he puts all of this in the context of the next game against Michigan State. He speculates about the need to play three receivers against the Spartans, how they might play the Nittany Lions and what he thinks the early-game matchups will dictate for the Penn State offense.  Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State football once again responded to a loss with a blowout win. This time they dominated Indiana, scoring 31 points before the start of the fourth quarter on the way to a 45 to 14 route. Penn State's defense gave up a touchdown on the second drive of the game but then shut down the Hoosiers offense for the rest of the game. Join the BWI Live Postgame show to discuss the big win for the Nittany Lions and have your questions answered. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK The Penn State defense allowed eight yards after that initial drive before the offense put the game away, and the backups came into the game with seven minutes left in the third quarter. That dominating effort was spearheaded by the Penn State defensive line that knocked starting quarterback Jack Tuttle out of the game while forcing four sacks. In addition, the Nittany Lion run defense smothered Indiana with 15 tackles for loss.  On offense, Kaytron Allen dominated the game for the Nittany Lions, who ran through the Indiana defense with ease. Allen forced multiple missed tackles on the way to 85 yards rushing and three touchdowns to go, with two catches for 72 yards. Allen caught a simple check-down from quarterback Sean Clifford and then weaved through the Indiana secondary to set up a go-ahead touchdown moments later. He finished with three touchdowns to power the Nittany Lions to the blowout.  With a blowout win comes the backup quarterback. Penn State fan's favorite reserve player, Drew Allar, impressed in his 20-plus minutes on the field, throwing two touchdowns, including a strike from the one-yard line to Harrison Wallace. Starter Sean Clifford had an up-and-down day, throwing a bad early interception, but fighting back with several good throws on the run to generate explosive yards to receiver Mitchell Tinsley.  Learn more about your ad choices. Can the Nittany Lions rebound?  From there, they'll get into a specific discussion about the offense on Saturday and the larger problems that plague the Nittany Lions on that side of the ball.  Next, they'll discuss the defense and how Penn State allowed 418 yards rushing to Michigan in one of the most lopsided defeats in recent memory for Penn State head coach James Franklin.  There will also be plenty of time for your thoughts and opinions. Fans who join the show can interact with the hosts and ask specific questions about the game or the second half of the season. They'll discuss Minnesota, the White Out Game, and if the defense is genuinely susceptible to the Gophers as they were to the Wolverines.  Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State football suffered its first loss of the season, losing 41 to 17, falling with a thud. Penn State gave up over 350 yards rushing in the game. Penn State is now 5-1. Join the BWI Live postgame show on YouTube to discuss what happened in the game. Host Tom Hannifan and film analyst Thomas Frank Carr take your questions and break down the game.  Penn State managed only 14 plays in the first half, compared to Michigan's 50, yet was only down by two scores at halftime. However, two big runs by Michigan blew the game open in the third quarter, where Manny Diaz's defense gave up 168 yards on the ground.  Penn State's offense was overmatched, gaining only 22 yards rushing from its trio of runners before the game script was out of hand. However, quarterback Sean Clifford was good on the day, hitting several passes on third down to Mitchell Tinsley and a 48-yard pass to Harrison Wallace. But the team had very little consistency on offense and couldn't keep up with the Wolverines' onslaught.  The fourth quarter didn't yield better results, with Clifford going down and backup Drew Allar finishing the game.  Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State football fans have lots of questions after the team's season-opening win against Purdue nearly a week ago. So the BWI Daily mailbag show will give you some of those answers. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss fans' questions submitted to the Blue White Illustrated message board.  Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss the show.  They start the show with a discussion about the Penn State running game. A message board member wants to know if the Nittany Lions offense should take Fox commentator Joel Klatt's suggestion and line the Penn State running backs up deeper in the backfield to give them a running start at the handoff.  Bauer gives his thoughts on the matter before T-Frank describes what he saw on film during the game. From there, T-Frank shifts the conversation towards freshman Nick Singleton and how using him in certain formations could be advantageous for specific reasons.  They also discuss the travel roster for away games and the rules set by the Big Ten. Now that teams are making exponentially more money, is that an outdated rule? T-Frank and Bauer discuss that theoretical change in the future. From there, that conversation bleeds into one about the wide receiver position. Does Penn State have a clear picture of their rotation beyond Parker Washington and Mitchell Tinsley? Bauer tells T-Frank what he knows about the situation.  The next question deals with rotation at all positions but focuses on the running backs. Does the staff need to limit the rotation of that group to get players in a rhythm? T-Frank doesn't buy the rhythm theory, but he does explain why getting more opportunities for one player is advantageous based on his experience.  They answer questions about how fans should view the game and the opponent from week one and how it compares to last season's opening win against Wisconsin. They also take an extended portion of the show to discuss Landon Tengwall's best position, the problem at right tackle, and if it's too early to worry about those players.  They wrap up the show discussing Keaton Ellis' performance and how Penn State can match up against Ohio State in a month.    00:00 Show Intro 02:30 Show changes going forward 05:11 Lining RBs up deeper in the backfield 09:30 Outlook for RB room and breakdown of performance  12:37 Big Ten travel roster expansion? 15:30 Wide receiver depth discussion 19:15 Player/running back rotation 27:40 Landon Tengwall and the o-line issues 34:47 Keaton Ellis standing out  37:31 Penn State's defense and how it can work against Ohio State Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State football faced off with the Purdue Boilermakers on Thursday night and won in a wild 35-31 finish under the lights. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss the action. https://bit.ly/3Ar0hCC Penn State managed to gain 35 points in a frustrated and stilted way that has, unfortunately, become a norm under head coach James Franklin. The Nittany Lions didn't score in the first or third quarters and went more than 20 minutes of game time in the second half without points. Additionally, fourteen of their 35 points came in the final two minutes of the first half. All of that means that it was a frustrating game for Penn State fans. So what happened? T-Frank takes you through the performance of Olu Fashanu, Sal Wormely, Mitchell Tinsley, Drew Allar, and Hunter Nourzad. Penn State faces Purdue Thursday night at 8 pm and Blue White Illustrated is getting you ready for the game by dissecting the Penn State depth chart. Host of the BWI Daily Edition and film analyst, Thomas Frank Carr. takes you through each position and gives you a preview of what's to come tomorrow night. He starts with the quarterbacks and starter Sean Clifford, before working to the running backs and where Nick Singleton fits into the roster. From there he explains how the receiver room will shake out with only five players that Penn State feels comfortable with on the field. How does that change what Mitchell Tinsley and Parker Washington do on the field? He explains. Next he works through the offensive line and goes over what head coach James Franklin said about the interior linemen and how that group will play out over the course of the season. Hunter Nourzad, Landon Tengwall and Saleem Wormley all will play, but in what order? He finishes off the offense with how he thinks Tyler Warren will fit into the lineup at tight end. Next, he shifts to the defensive side of the football to look at the defensive line. Hakeem Beamon makes his return to the field after his absence in 2021 but how will the rest of the depth at that position shake out? T-Frank focuses there and then shifts to Adisa Isaac and the defensive ends. Linebacker Curtis Jacobs takes the spotlight in the middle of the field before T-Frank shines a light on the cornerbacks. While plenty was made of the training camp that Johnny Dixon had, T-Frank focuses on starter Joey Porter Jr. Finally, he looks at the safety position and how Tig Brown will perform and the competition between Keaton Ellis and Zakee Wheatley. Penn State's 2022 season is right around the corner, and to get you ready, Blue White Illustrated is breaking down each position on the way to training camp. Today The BWI Daily Edition focuses on the wide receivers. Can this group actually improve while losing first-round draft pick Jahan Dotson? Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss which receivers are tasked with that job.  Bauer and T-Frank start by setting the scene for the 2022 receiving room. Who will replace Dotson and his 137 targets? Parker Washington returns for his third season in Happy Valley, flanked by fellow 2020 receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith. Added to the mix is Western Kentucky transfer, Mitchell Tinsley. Is that trio enough to replace one of the best pure receivers in program history? The question might be something different, which Bauer and T-Frank discuss.  Next, they introduce the rest of the room and the main players that the pair expect to compete with the top trio for playing time. Can Malick Meiga or Harrison Wallace push Lambert-Smith for playing time? Or will someone else lose snaps to an up-and-coming player? After that, T-Frank and Bauer discuss how the perception of the room could be different than the results because of the shadow Dotson left. Additionally, T-Frank brings up the other offensive pieces and their role in receiver production. Quarterback Sean Clifford and the running game will also influence how efficient and effective the group can be.  Finally, they discuss the group's freshmen, X-factors, and which way the stock for the receiver position heading into the season.  Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State football enters its third week of spring football today, which is the focus of the BWI Live show. Host Thomas Frank Carr, senior Editor Nate Bauer, and reporter Dave Eckert discuss the notable players and topics of the week at noon and other topics related to Penn State's spring practices.  Join the show at noon on YouTube to get your questions in and participate in the show!  Penn State head coach James Franklin spoke with the media late last week and discussed several topics. One of the most revealing topics is the development of transfer wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley. The former Western Kentucky Hilltopper drew high praise from head coach James Franklin. What did he say, and what can it mean for the Nittany Lion's passing attack next season? The BWI Live crew discusses the impact he has had this spring.  Franklin also gave new insight into new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz's defense. How much of a learning curve are players on that side of the ball this spring? The panel will tackle that topic as well.  Next, they'll stay on the defense and break down the veteran leadership situation. So who is stepping up as a team leader? Where can more leadership develop? That's a question that Franklin did not have an answer for last week, so BWI will sink their teeth into that topic as well.  Finally, they will discuss standout Penn State players so far this spring that Franklin brought up. Which young Nittany Lions are ahead of expectations? And is there any update on the offensive line situation for Penn State?  You'll also hear from Penn State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and his thoughts about the freshmen on his roster. He had rave reviews for the Penn State running backs and explained the learning curve for the quarterbacks.  As always, join the show and ask your questions or suggest topics you'd like to hear BWI discuss on the show. Penn State football started spring practice on Monday, but their recruiting efforts were already in full swing last weekend. The BWI Daily Recruiting show looks at the key players that were on campus during spring ball, including a key 2023 recruit with a long saga with the Nittany Lions. To start, they quickly discussed what they saw in person at spring camp Monday. Players that stood out include receivers Mitchell Tinsley and Parker Washington and freshman Zane Durant. Finally, Pickel has some thoughts about the early enrollees at Penn State and how they looked next to their new teammates. After that, they transition to the transfer portal and two essential addition that Penn State would like to make on the defensive side of the ball. Grayson and Gabriel Murphy, already committed to UCLA, visited Happy Valley this weekend to see the program. How did the meeting go? Ryan Snyder spoke to sources and reported what he heard, including a tentative timeline of when to listen for a final decision. After wrapping up their thoughts on spring ball, they transition to recruiting for 2023. Tight end Andrew Rappleyea visited campus this weekend and spoke with Snyder about his time at Penn State. Snyder gives some details about what they discussed and then his thoughts on what might happen with the four-star tight end. Next, they move over to the defensive side of the ball to discuss the four-star defensive lineman from IMG Academy, Will Norman. Norman was on campus this weekend for a surprise visit. Snyder explained why it was a big get for Penn State to get him on campus and how that came about. It's a deep defensive line class in 2023, but Norman is a standout player. Where does he fit? Snyder explains. Finally, they look at the offensive line for another interior prospect for 2023 in Georgia Native and a top 100 player for On3, Nathan Efobi. The 6-4, 282-pound prospect visited campus this past weekend and left with a scholarship offer. It may seem like a curious move to offer more linemen with four already committed in the class, but Snyder explains why. Next, they look at the On3 300 for the Class of 2024, which came out on Monday. Penn State top target and Four-star athlete Quinton Martin, Penn State offensive line commit Cooper Cousins, and Roman Catholic receiver Tyseer Denmark are just three of the 12 Pennsylvania prospects in the initial 300 best players in the country. Finally, Pickel and Snyder discuss more news about upcoming Penn State visits for the spring. Penn State head coach James Franklin said that the team would be active in the transfer portal this offseason during his early signing day press conference. However, the spring semester has started at Penn State, and only one transfer, receiver Mitchell Tinsley, has joined the Nittany Lions.  However, that doesn't mean that there aren't players in the portal that Penn State should be interested in bringing to campus. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, brings up two players at the most critical position for Penn State to fill this offseason, offensive line. T-Frank starts the show by giving a quick scouting report of former Virginia right tackle Ryan Swoboda, and Vanderbilt left tackle Tyler Sheen.  Swoboda's name has been linked to Penn State for a while now, with the 6-10 tackle entering the portal some time ago. So what should you know about his game? T-Frank explains what he's seen on tape.  Sheen is relatively new in the portal, entering his name earlier in the week. T-Frank gives a quick summation of the three-year player at Vanderbilt and explains the pros and cons of each player.  Next, he gives a quick preview of a future topic for Penn State football, the tight end room. The trio of young players at that position came into the season with high expectations set by Franklin after calling them the country's deepest room. Was it all as bad as it seems? T-Frank gives a quick preview of that topic, which he'll dig deeper into later this week.  After that, he switches gears and brings in Blue White Illustrated's basketball reporters to talk about Penn State Hoops. The team has won three of their last four games and is now .500 in Big Ten competition. Penn State football landed another highly-sought after target in the transfer portal in former Western Kentucky receiver Mitchell Tinsley. Host of the BWI Daily Edition and film analyst for On3, Thomas Frank Carr looks into just what makes Tinsley tick in his scouting report on the former Hilltopper.  Before that, T-Frank addresses the news of the day that Penn State defensive end - and one-time transfer - Arnold Ebiketie has opted out of the Outback Bowl. While he gave a scouting report on the Arkansas offense earlier in the week on the BWI Daily Edition, he reiterates where Ebiketie's absence fits into the picture. While the news isn't shocking, it was still a blow for Penn State's hopes to keep their opponent contained.  Next, he gives his thoughts on how bowl games should change with the times. Instead of clinging to the past, T-Frank has an idea of how less-relevant bowl games can advertise what they have to offer fans of teams that are outside of the national picture.  JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Learn more about your ad choices.
