Specialising in the manufacture of precision components for the aerospace industry, subcontract machining firm Apel began investing in Citizen CNC turning centres in the 1980s to help raise efficiency. Founded in 1965, the company has over time continued to re-invest in modern, highly productive lathes purchased exclusively from Citizen Machinery UK. Nowadays, Apel operates nine Cincom sliding-head lathes and one Miyano fixed-head model at its Wilmslow facility. Together they produce around 50,000 components per month across more than 3,000 part numbers. Utilisation of these Citizen CNC lathes and related technologies has led to significantly increased levels of productivity and profitability. The technology that has contributed most to raising the efficiency of production at Apel is Citizen's proprietary LFV (low-frequency vibration) chip-breaking software, which is part of the operating system in the control of three of the six 20mm capacity Cincom L20s on site. When activated, the function breaks what would otherwise be long, stringy swarf into short, manageable chips. Around 50% of the material processed by Apel is aerospace-grade stainless steel bar. LFV is especially effective when processing this alloy. Paul Bowker, Apel's Quality Director said: “We were an early adopter of LFV in 2018 following a visit to Citizen Machinery's technical centre in Bushey to witness demonstrations. The function reduces the metal removal rate slightly, so we don't use it all the time, but it's really useful to be able to pick and choose when to program the function to start and stop. We switch it on mainly when turning stainless steel components on the LFV-equipped machines, especially when processing parts shorter than 25mm. It is normally chip breaking the metal for up to half of a typical cutting cycle.” He further explained that the decision to use LFV is also based on the surface finish required on components. Some customers' drawings stipulate a very high surface tolerance and machining with the LFV function switched on allows this to be achieved by turning alone. It avoids the need to centreless grind parts afterwards, thereby reducing unit manufacturing costs and raising profitability. Dimensional and surface finish tolerances on many component drawings can be met and maintained when using this facility. Apel also uses Citizen's adaptive guide bush (AGB) system. This automatically compensates for variation in bar diameter, preventing the stock from seizing in the bush. It also constantly maintains concentricity to prevent run-out issues. Downtime is avoided and tight machining tolerances are maintained. The system is used not only on the 20mm capacity sliding-head lathes but also on three 32mm capacity Cincom models on the shop floor. The aerospace sector is very busy presently and Apel is well placed to win work due to the quality management system it operates, competitive pricing and the many industry and customer approvals it holds. Exports account for 20% of turnover with India and Saudi Arabia being major overseas markets. The AGB systems ensure reliability during unattended operation by compensating for bar diameter inconsistency and preventing stoppages. Additionally, the LFV machines do not have swarf clogging the working area when processing stainless steel. It contributes further to reliability and eliminates the need for an operator to be in attendance to untangle ribbons from the components and tooling. Mr Bowker concluded: “Our nine Cincoms, as well as the Miyano for turn-milling larger components up to 50mm diameter, support all of our production and will continue to do so as we increase our volume of work in the expanding global aerospace industry.”

While out in public, Sasaki is able to ease Miyano's worries about others speculating if the two of them are dating, which truly awakens Miyano's feelings. However, Miyano's lack of confidence in his feelings is a little frustrating. In episode eleven, Miyano's determination to confess to Sasaki in just the right way is adorable. The absence of homophobia throughout Sasaki & Miyano is a breath of fresh air in the world of LGBTQ+ media. Hanzawa's unclear feelings towards Miyano are a bit confusing. Chika shares part of her coming out story. In episode twelve, Sasaki maturely reconsiders his actions in episode eleven. We have an absolutely beautiful sunset confession scene! Unfortunately, however, Kuresawa puts Miyano in a position to reveal his relationship to Tashiro before he's ready to do so. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika enter the wonderful world of boy's love! They review episodes one through three of Sasaki & Miyano. While the timeline of episode one was a little confusing at points, nothing could put a damper on the ample shoujo feels that bubbled and burst all throughout this darling first episode. The tension emanating from Sasaki and Miyano during The Pocky Game scene is off the charts. A post credits scene shines a light on a very silly plot hole. In episode three, Sasaki nobly defends the importance of boy's love to Ogasawara. Miyano boldly gifts Sasaki candy for white day, leading to an adorably heightened level of happiness for Sasaki. For over five decades landscape designer, sculptor and naturalist Leland Miyano has connected people to Hawaiian native ecosystems through his gardens in Kahulu`u, at the Bishop Museum and at The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu. In 2019, he created an award winning double hulled canoe installation comprised of invasive guava branches which reflects a Hawaiian sense of place while acknowledging the massive ecosystem transformations Hawai`i has undergone.  He shows us his native Hawaiian garden at the Atherton Halau, his work in stone and wood, and talks about his life-long passion for endemic species from snails to plants as an expression of connectivity between science and art.

Junko Furuta was only seventeen years old on November 25, 1988, when she was kidnapped on her way home from work by a group of four teenage boys. One of the boys, Miyano Hiroshi, was a classmate of Junko's who had been scorned when he asked Junko on a date and she rejected him. In retaliation, Miyano and three of his friends– Ogura Jō, Minato Shinji, and Watanabe Yasushi–held Junko captive for 44 days where they repeatedly beat, tortured, and raped her. Junko would remain imprisoned by these boys until her body finally succumbed to its injuries and she died on January 4th, 1989. Junko Furuta was a 17 year old student at Yashio-Minami High School. She was a good student who had high hopes for the future as she was saving for a trip post graduation and had a job lined up. On the night of November 25, 1988, Furuta was on her way home from work when she was kicked off her bike by and unknown teenaged boy. A few seconds later, another teenaged boy appeared and helped her. He offered to walk her home. Unbeknownst to Furuta, both boys (Hiroshi Miyano and Shinji Minato) were friends who planned this out. Miyano lead Furuta to a warehouse, where she was beaten and raped. She was held captive at Misato's home for 40 days. Miyano, Minato and two of their friends, Jō Ogura and Yasushi Watanabe beat, tortured and raped Furuta. Minato's family never reported the crimes as they feared their son and his friends. Furuta succumbed to her injuries on January 4, 1989. Fearing the consequences, the boys wrapped Furuta's body in blankets and placed her in a metal drum, which was then filled with wet concrete. Over the next four months, the boys continued to commit more violent crimes. After being arrested for an unrelated crime, Miyano confessed to killing Furuta and dumping her body after thinking Ogura confessed as well. The four boys were arrested and charged with murder. They all served anywhere from 5 to 20 years in prison. Furuta's family and the public believed the sentences were too light. Once they got out, most of them continued to commit crimes.
