Patagonia Part I: Hike the W Trek in Argentina Patagonia ranks in my Top 3 of the ‘Most Beautiful Places' I've seen (and I've been to 50 countries and all seven continents). The rugged granite mountains are often snow capped in glaciers lit up by the sun. Those same glaciers have turned its many lakes into stunning milky blue and teal oasis that defy description. In Patagonia, you can hike one of most beautiful hikes in the world, the W-Trek including the French Valley and Grey Lake. You can also sea kayak around the icebergs and glacier in Grey Lake. On our trip, we also got in some amazing biking when we were over on the Argentinian side after we hiked and checked out the gorgeous Perito Moreno glacier. We spent some time eating and exploring the fun gateway cities of Puerto Morales, Punta Arenas, El Chaltan, and El Calafate. In this Part I, we hike the stunningly beautiful W-Trek in Chile [ 49.7 miles / 80 km · Total Elevation Gain: 8,956 ft / 2,730 ] over the course of four days, all the way to glacial Lake Grey. We stay in refugios, where we also get a hot and tasty breakfast and dinner each night. Learn all about going on an adventure in Patagonia and by listening to today's show and visiting the website. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Tuesday, Sept. 19 Plan a visit to the tasting room at Hawk Knob cidery-- Cheers! *clinks glasses*…Get an adrenaline rush with a guided adventure in Almost Heaven…and Moundsville's Palace of Gold is named on the the 40 most beautiful places in the United States...on today's daily304. #1 – From ROVOLOGY – Birdsong and bluegrass music provided the soundscape for an entertaining and informative afternoon recently at Hawk Knob Appalachian Hard Cider near Lewisburg. Against a backdrop of picturesque mountain views, CEO/Founder Josh Bennett poured out generous cider samples for guests. Bennett took a number of detours on his way to producing cider commercially. From working on a Montana cattle ranch to training horses in Florida, and from driving a tractor trailer, to starting a business in disaster relief, Bennett developed skills that would serve him well later. After three years in Germany with the U.S. Navy, he took advantage of the GI Bill and studied agriculture and agronomy at West Virginia University. Ending up a few counties from where he grew up, Bennett found his calling. In 2014, Hawk Knob, named after a nearby mountain, opened its hard cider operation. Hawk Knob's tasting room opened in 2015 and the fledgling business took flight. Today, Hawk Knob Appalachian Hard Cider is a small, hands-on operation with a big reputation for producing dry, complex beverages full of character and flavor. Bennett and his team still hand-sort their heirloom and modern apples, then press, age, and blend them. To learn more or plan a visit, check out www.hawkknob.com. Last week we interview two of our NZ Ahead members, Floss and Jez, who left the UK on a small yacht and sailed (for three years) to New Zealand. The family are now happy and settled, and the kids (who are now 16 and 14) are in school. Their account of the story was fascinating (if you haven't listened to it go back to the episode before this one), but THIS interview, the one with the kids is even better!! Sit back and enjoy this very honest chat with two boys who spent three years at sea with their mum and dad! If you are moving to New Zealand with kids then you will have thought more than once about where, when and how you will break the news to them. Unlike adults, kids tend not to see the long term benefits (not for a while at least). All that is important to them is their friends, their school and their Nanny and Grandpa. In this week's show, you are going to hear from four parents who recently made the move to New Zealand with little kids. They share the things that helped them when the time came to convince the kids that life in New Zealand would be something to look forward to rather than dread. Why don't gifted kids simply be given more homework/challenges at school? Do all schools in New Zealand offer a gifted programme? Is the programme offered to overseas students and /or kids on a visa or must you be a resident of NZ? Do teachers have to have any extra qualifications to be T&G teacher? Do the kids come out with extra credits/or more chance of getting into college because they have been through this programme? How do you decide which kids get accepted into the programme and which don't? What does a typical day in a gifted programme classroom look like? Is it for the parents to flag up that their child is T&G or is that the job of a teacher or other professional? Are there any areas of the country that were better able to accommodate both the challenging parts of giftedness and the parts that need a bit more rigour? Last week, in behind-the-scenes podcast #8, I shared with you some of the very real fears that I have about leaving New Zealand to travel Europe for six months. One of those fears is leaving my kids behind. In particular my 17 years old daughter, Tessa. As any parent knows, a lot happens in the life of a teenager. Multiple dramas arise. Drama's that, as a parent, one likes to be around to help navigate. Calm the waters. Guide them through. For the first time ever in Tessa's life (and mine as a parent) I won't be here for her. And the thought of that (still) scares me. In this week's behind-the-scenes podcast you will get a glimpse into the life of my daughter. You will see what goes through the head of this extraordinary seventeen-year-old girl as she grows up in New Zealand. I hope that you love listening to her as much as I do. Enjoy. My most thought-provoking writing is shared in my weekly newsletter with my circle of friends. I would love to include you in that group. Sign up below. Turning your back on the American dream for a new life in New Zealand. Is it possible, for a couple in their late fifties to leave everything behind, move to the other side of the world and create a new life in New Zealand? It certainly is. Not only is it possible but, according to some, it is what keeps you young and life exciting! In this week's show, I talked with Sheri. Sheri was the director of a hospital in the USA. She and her husband Dan spent the past thirty years building a comfortable life together for themselves and their family. And then two of her children moved to New Zealand and took the grandchildren with them. So what did Dan and Sheri do? They stepped out of the American dream and they followed their hearts. They opted for an adventure. They started all over again. This is their story. Starting a New Life in New Zealand. The Details In this week's show, Sheri talks about: How she and her husband came to the decision to move to New Zealand Leaving her son and his children back in the USA Returning to being a bedside nurse in NZ after spending years as a director of a hospital Renting a home after years of being a homeowner How the move has affected her and her husband, Dan Working in a New Zealand hospital The positives and negatives of moving to New Zealand. If you are moving to New Zealand then you will love this show. It will also serve as a reminder of how important it is to surround yourself with like-minded people whenever you are about to tackle something as huge as moving to the other side of the world. You don't have to do it alone. Sheri and Dan are valuable and treasured members of our private community (that we affectionately call the NZ Slackers!). Living in New Zealand. What The First 6 Months Were REALLY Like. In this week's show, we are happy to welcome back Maile and Brian! This American couple left the US almost six months ago to start a new life in Dunedin, New Zealand. They are happy with their decision (in fact, I have never met two people so in love with a country) but their journey certainly wasn't all plain sailing. Enjoy! Americans Living in New Zealand. The Highs (& The Lows). If you are moving to New Zealand from the USA then you will love this show. No one can predict how they will feel when they move to another country. Maile and Brian certainly never expected to experience the flood of emotions that came within the first few months of arriving in New Zealand. The thing that I love about this couple is their ability to talk things through. They are so very transparent. This openness is a gift to everyone out there thinking of making the same move to New Zealand. How We Met Brian and Maile Last year, Maile had emailed me to say that she was thinking of moving to New Zealand and could I put her in touch with any other nurses who were doing the same. Back then, we hadn't started the private New Zealand community that we now have, but I emailed Maile back and told her that I was about to do a podcast interview with Katie, a nurse who was in the process of moving to Dunedin. A month or so later, when Brian and I created our NZ Ahead Membership Package (Formerly Moving to and Living in New Zealand Package), I contacted Maile and Brian and asked them if they'd like to join. They did and the rest is history! A few months later Maile and Brian moved to Dunedin and in December 2021 Brian and I flew down to spend a few days with them. The Importance of surrounding Yourself With like-minded People. Maile is a valuable and very treasured member of our private community (that we affectionately call the NZ Slackers!). The help that she offers to new arrivals and those thinking of moving to the country is priceless. Maile goes that extra mile to help people (she has just helped Emil, a nurse from the Netherlands, land a job in the same hospital as her, he and his family will move here in a few months!). It is so very exciting to watch as people come together and help each other realise their common dream of moving to New Zealand. There's a quote that I love: 'If it were easy then everyone would do it'. This week, we are excited to share with you an extra special show. What you are about to hear is a podcast that was put together by the members of our private New Zealand Calling community. The subject is about their fears about moving to New Zealand. This show is fabulous. Wherever you are on your New Zealand adventure, whatever stage of the game you're in, this episode will put to rest those niggling fears and doubts and help you to understand that the thoughts that you are having are all part of the package. Completely normal. And usually unjustified. Remember. If it were easy then everyone would do it. A little back story... Last week I received an email from a guy. It said: 'I want to make the move to NZ but to be honest, there are so many fears that hold me back from pursuing my adventure, I can't ever see me making it.' I am very grateful to that man for sending me that email as it gave me the idea for this week's show. And hopefully, he will go on to listen to this show and realise that he is not alone. I reached out to our NZ private community and asked our members to share their biggest fears when it came to moving to NZ. Here's what they came up with. Moving to New Zealand Fears. The Biggest Ones. Leaving family and friends behind. Not having the support system for our children. Never getting any alone time as a couple as we won't have grandparents or other family members to look after the kids. Packing up my house and getting it ready to sell/rent. Not 'making it'. Losing my job when I get to NZ and having no support. Our children growing up and resenting us for taking them away to the other side of the world and away from their families. Making the wrong choice. Knowing that the 'doubters' were right. Thank you to each one of you for being so honest and open about fears. This episode will help a lot of people. Questions Covered: What's the difference between private and public schools. Why would anyone pay for a private school in NZ? I'm only a trainee teacher in the UK so I won't have my credentials by the time we move. I do however have a learning and teaching foundation degree (equivalent to level 6 on the NZQA). What are the chances of me getting work within the education system while I hopefully finish off my teacher training in New Zealand. From a parent standpoint- do kids get homework at primary level, how often and when are they assessed? How structured is the school day/classroom, how much freedom do the kids have? Do they learn about wellbeing, mental health, citizenship, sex and relationship education and when? What support is there for pupils who are struggling, what stretch is there for able pupils? How (and how often) do schools communicate with parents? From a teacher standpoint - can you reasonably do your job within the working week or is it expected you will do many hours more? Is CPD (continuous professional development) encouraged/supported, are NZ schools collaborative places to work? Are teachers trusted and respected as professionals? What's the relationship like with parents? What are the frustrations and what are the best bits? How similar are schools - are they all variations on a theme, or do they all have their own "personality" so to speak? What's the resource situation - do schools provide all the resources, or are the staff expected to? Are NZ schools (I guess I'm thinking of high schools here really) cliquey for the pupils, or are they integrated and accepting? What do teachers do to help settle immigrant children? What are the typical differences between low and high decile schools in New Zealand? Moving to New Zealand? Here's More Content For You! Taranaki. It's true. There are some strange laws in New Zealand. But not nearly as strange as some of those found in other countries. Take Mexico for example, it is illegal to kiss on the street in Guanajuato, while in the USA it is against the law to sell Kinder Eggs at the grocery store! If you are moving to New Zealand or plan to travel to New Zealand when the borders open, then you are going to LOVE this show. You will discover three weird laws that have been passed in New Zealand and then learn about five more laws that Brian and I are considering taking to Jacinda for consideration. If you are thinking of moving to New Zealand from the UK (or elsewhere for that matter) and are concerned about a few things you may miss, you are going to really LOVE this show! Last week, Brian and went on holiday. We stayed in a suburb of Dunedin called Port Chalmers. We loved it. Not only were we are away from the kids that never stop eating and the lawn that never stops growing, but we were able to explore one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand. It was during this time in the South Island, that we realised there were some things, things that we'd been longing for these past twelve years, were right here under our noses. Imagine that. New Zealand food. Not exactly the most talked about cuisine in the world. Why? Is it because the kiwis are ashamed of their national nosh or are they hiding something from the rest of the world? When we made our move to New Zealand from the UK twelve years ago, I wasn't expecting much in the way of food. Maybe a few lamb chops and a packet of butter. A glass of milk at a push. Like everything else in New Zealand, the food is rather underrated. Which is a shame as it leads people to believe that the New Zealand food is either boring and not worth mentioning, or is so weird that it must only be eaten by people who reside in mud huts and cook dinosaur eggs. (One of the many misconceptions about New Zealand). People in our private New Zealand community will often ask, is the food in New Zealand better? That's a tricky one. It depends where you come from and what you class as better. I am from England and although this doesn't apply to all food, I'll stick my neck out and say that the majority of New Zealand food is waaay better than the UK. If I were asked to describe what typical New Zealand people are like, the last word that would come to mind would be 'rugged'. Did I ever mention to you that, twelve years ago, I got cold feet about moving to New Zealand? It's true. Are They Being Lost in New Zealand? A survey compiled by Melbourne's Monash University found that New Zealand families would like their children to be taught basic life skills in school. But what are the feels down on the ground? (Sorry, trying to sound cool but it failed. I promise not to do it again). In this weeks show we thought we would give you our opinion on whether we think the New Zealand people are retaining (and passing on) valuable life skills to the younger generation or if they are watching helplessly as the good stuff gets washed down the drain. In this week's podcast episode on New Zealand Life Skills Brian and I talk about: Manners and etiquette. Fixing and maintaining cars. Communication skills. Particularly in the younger generation. The way that New Zealand kids are raised is different from say, the UK. Household chores and why they matter in New Zealand. Toilet matters (admit it, your mind is boggling). Yesterday I was asked by a member of our private community, 'Is the food in New Zealand better?' While this is a huge topic (and those who know me will have probably guessed my answer), I said it would depend on where you are comparing it to. Compared to the UK, yes, I think that the food in New Zealand is better. It tastes more 'real'. Don't ask me to define real because I can't. Sorry. Let's just say it hits a different spot on the taste buds. After talking to this community member for a while I discovered her reason for asking the above question. She had severe food allergies and was trying to gauge what life in New Zealand would look like. In this week's show, I talk to Jenn Morris. Jenn is from the Youtube channel, A Thousand Words. She emigrated to New Zealand over a decade ago and she has various food intolerances and allergies that she lives with. Would You Like To Join Our Private New Zealand Community? How she copes living in a (very) small town in regards to her special dietary needs. Grocery shopping in New Zealand. Eating out with her special dietary needs.
