In this episode of Believe in People: Addiction, Recovery & Stigma, Patti reflects on a lifetime shaped by silence, trauma, and survival. Growing up in a dysfunctional home in 1970s San Francisco - marked by alcoholism, emotional neglect, and parents who barely spoke - she began using alcohol and drugs at just 13 to escape overwhelming pain. By 16 she had lost her mother to alcoholism, a loss that profoundly shaped her understanding of addiction, identity, and generational trauma.Patti shares candidly about early experiences with hallucinogens during the counterculture era, the years she spent bartending in Alaska amid heavy cocaine use, and the moment she chose life over self-destruction. She describes the powerful impact of her first women-only 12-step meeting, the birth of long-term sobriety, and the choice to get clean before having children so she would never repeat the patterns she grew up with. After nearly 13 years in recovery, Patti later faced relapse - driven by disconnection, loss of community, motherhood identity shifts, and the seductive “yummy mummy” drinking culture. She unpacks how secrecy, co-dependency, and convincing self-talk sustained her relapse, and the moments that finally brought clarity: writing her first book while still drinking, confronting her own hypocrisy, and acknowledging that recovery requires honesty, therapy, and belonging - not just abstinence.Together, Patti and Matt explore the deeper roots of addiction: trauma, loneliness, the search for meaning, and the societal and gendered pressures that shape women's drinking. Patti critiques patriarchal elements of traditional 12-step structures, highlights the importance of women-centred spaces, and explains why she has gone on to start recovery groups in New Zealand, Portugal, and beyond. This is a rich and layered conversation about breaking generational cycles, redefining identity in motherhood, and building a recovery community grounded in compassion, inclusion, and truth. In this episode:Growing up in silence, emotional neglect and an alcoholic homeEarly use of alcohol, speed and acid from age 13Hallucinogens in 1970s San Francisco drug cultureLosing her mother to alcoholism at 16Bartending in Alaska, cocaine use, and the “fClick here to text our host, Matt, directly!

Anti-Catholicism in the Mexican Revolution, 1913–1940 examines anti-Catholic leaders and movements during the Mexican Revolution, an era that resulted in a constitution denying the Church political rights. Anti-Catholic Mexicans recognized a common enemy in a politically active Church in a predominantly Catholic nation. Many books have elucidated the popular roots and diversity of Roman Catholicism in Mexico, but the perspective of the Church's adversaries has remained much less understood. This volume provides a fresh perspective on the violent conflict between Catholics and the revolutionary state, which was led by anti-Catholics such as Plutarco Elías Calles, who were bent on eradicating the influence of the Catholic Church in politics, in the nation's educational system, and in the national consciousness. The zeal with which anti-Catholics pursued their goals—and the equal vigor with which Catholics defended their Church and their faith—explains why the conflict between Catholics and anti-Catholics turned violent, culminating in the devastating Cristero Rebellion (1926–1929).Collecting essays by a team of senior scholars in history and cultural studies, the book includes chapters on anti-Catholic leaders and intellectuals, movements promoting scientific education and anti-alcohol campaigns, muralism, feminist activists, and Mormons and Mennonites. Welcome to the CU 2.0 Podcast Greatest Hits show. There are over 300 shows in the library and yet a reality in the podcast business is that few of us ever even look at more than maybe the half dozen most recent shows. That's why we are going to resurface some of the best and most popular shows as Greatest Hits. This is show #6 Matthew Butler on Charitable Donation Accounts and, no, I hadn't heard of it either until I talked with Butler.I like it when people bring me something I hadn't heard of it so I put him on the show. Now I'm resurfacing it as Greatest Hit #7.Here's why: a CDA allows a credit union to make investments in otherwise impermissible vehicles where the kicker is that 51% of returns have to be distributed as charitable donations (that presently means a 501 C 3).  But the credit union can retain the remaining 49% for its own uses. Why isn't your credit union doing this? Probably because you had never heard of it either. And now you have.Listen up.

CDA - three letters but, ask Matthew Butler, and he will tell you this is a potential huge win for credit unions and their communities.,Butler is founder of Elite Capital where a chief product offering is the CDA - that's a charitable donation account and, no, I hadn't heard of it either.Just a handful of credit unions currently use a charitable donation account and Butler is here to tell you that's a costly mistake. Here's why: a CDA allows a credit union to make investments in otherwise impermissible vehicles where the kicker is that 51% of returns have to be distributed as charitable donations (that presently means a 501 C 3).  But the credit union can retain the remaining 49% for its own uses. What's an impermissible investment?  In the show Butler points particularly to investment grade corporate bonds.  There are other options too.  Why don't more credit unions use CDAs? We talk at some length in the show about that very point.A lot simply haven't heard of CDAs.Also on the show is Fernando Arrue, portfolio manager at Elite Capital.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Welcome to episode 166 of The Autumn Windbags! Question of the Day, what is the Raiders biggest need heading into the 2023 NFL Draft? It can be whatever "biggest need" means to you. RJ's biggest needs are as follows: 1. Cornerback - Nate Hobbs regressed and he should be in the slot anyway. Need two starting corners but at least have some depth. 2. Defensive Tackle - Neil Farrell and Matthew Butler couldn't get playing time on a trash defense. Nichols and Tillery are place holders. Why'd we let Andrew Billings go? If this group can get their shit together the rest of the squad will look better. 3. Linebacker - Spillane and Masterson are cast off back ups while Divine Deablo hasn't developed but has some potential. 4. Quarterback - Jimmy Garoppolo is a placeholder and always gets hurt. If you don't have a franchise QB, you are looking for one. 5. Safety - Trevon Moehrig regressed in his second year and he's the only thing close to a starter on the squad. 6. Tight end - Austin Hooper and OJ Howard on cheap, one year deals. Only reason this isn't higher is the rest of our skill position players at tits. 7. Defensive end - God bless you, Maxx Crosby. Chandler Jones is staying for at least one more season. Malcom Koonce is not developing like we hoped. 8. Guard - Alex Bars is the weak link and Dylan Parham is likely headed to center at some point. 9. Center - Andre James for now. Need depth. 10. Tackle - Kolton Miller is a rock. Jermaine Eluemunor's job to lose on the right side. 11. Running Back - Does any team need six running backs? Only issue is did no other RB's get time because Josh Jacobs was so good or because they suck? 12. Wide Receiver - Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow, Jakobi Meyers. One of the best wide receiver rooms in football. Depth is an issue with mostly undrafted/practice squad guys fitting a specific niche. 13. Punter - AJ Cole is a two time Pro Bowler. 14. Kicker - Daniel Carlson is the best kicker in the NFL. Shove it, Justin Tucker. The value of looking at mock drafts is picking up trends and seeing value of general positions. Soto has seen over 50 2023 NFL Mock Drafts and this one is his favorite: https://theathletic.com/4413880/2023/04/17/nfl-7-rounds-mock-draft-2023/ The Raiders pick Devon Witherspoon, Trenton Simpson, Sam Laporta, Colby Wooden, Aidan O'Connell, AT Perry, Jordan Battle, Jon Gaines II, Ryan Hayes, Chris Rodriguez. Purdue quarterback Aidan O'Connell looks just like Landfill from Beef Fest. In LV Raiders news, NFL Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs has NOT signed his franchise tag. How worried should Raider Nation be? Raiders rumors point to University of Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker is the number three quarterback on Raiders general Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels draft board. Antonio Brown Raiders wide receiver briefly, explains why he fell out with Tom Brady. 2023-24 NFL Season schedule rankings are out. The Raiders schedule is the fourth toughest in football. In What Up, Windbags, how high should Anthony Richardson go, do the Raiders draft a quarterback this season or next and are we too picky about defensive players? 0:00 Intro 4:47 Raiders Biggest Draft Need 20:43 Mock Draft Value 31:04 Soto's Favorite Mock Draft 44:23 Aidan O'Connell vs Landfill 48:00 Josh Jacobs Unsigned 51:23 Hendon Hooker Third on Raiders Board? 55:02 Antonio Brown Embarrasses Again 57:32 Raiders Schedule Strength 59:02 What Up, Windbags You know you want more: https://linktr.ee/TheAutumnWindbags
