Christmas is the time we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. He became Immanuel, God with us. Jesus came to die for our sins—He was born to die. This episode will discuss two questions: Why did Jesus come to die, and why did He need to die? This episode answers those questions by discussing the following: The Eternal Nature of Jesus: Jesus existed before Christmas.  The Purpose of Christmas:  The mission of Jesus went beyond birth; He came to save us from our sins by dying for us.  Why did Jesus need to die? Romans 3:23 tells us all have sinned, and Romans 6:23 says the consequence is death. We needed a Savior. Jesus, sinless and perfect, offered Himself to cleanse us of our sins. Verses to Reflect On: Isaiah 53:5-6 NKJV Hebrews 2:14 NLT John 10:17-18 NASB 2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB 1 John 1:5-9 NASB Romans 10:9 NASB Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV John 3:16 NASB Other resources: Hope Gathering: Helping widows find help and healing in Christ-centered communities

May we never lose our awe and admiration for God. I pray that as the King of kings continues to reveal Himself and His glory we would not rush but instead would take a moment to truly worship Jesus with Reverance and make way for His rule in our lives. We are to give our loyalty to the Christ while we patiently endure the dangers, toils, and snares of this present age. The privileges of being justified and reconciled to God are a central teaching in Romans 8, and because of Jesus Christ's sacrifice, we, His people have the indwelling of Holy Spirit who is with us as we journey to eternity in God's new heaven and earth. Suffering with Jesus, however, is part of what we undergo, our edification, as we await the final and full consummation of all things. In the midst of our suffering, we have hope because of the surety of the world to come and the intercessory work of Holy Spirit. ============================= Table of Contents: ============================= Romans 8:1-15 NASB Romans 8:16-27 NASB Ephesians 1:9-11 NASB Romans 8:28-39 NASB ============================= Show Notes: ============================= Gospel Garage is a Christian Motorcycle Ministry which includes Saturday night church online. Peter, James and John glimpsed the radiance of Jesus' Heavenly glory, overshadowed by a cloud, on the mountain, and it was written of that moment in Matthew 17:1-5 NASB ”Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” ================== Table of Contents: ================== Isaiah 40:3-5 NASB Exodus 33:17-23 NASB Acts 7:54-56 NASB Exodus 24:15-18 NASB Habakkuk 3:2-4 NASB Exodus 13:21 NASB Romans 8:16-19 NASB Ephesians 1:15-20 NASB Hebrews 1:1-3 NASB Matthew 17:1-5 NASB Revelation 1:13-15 NASB 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 NASB Revelation 21:10-11 NASB Revelation 22:5 NASB Hosea 3:4-5 NASB ================== Show Notes: ================== Gospel Garage is a Christian Ministry which includes Saturday night church online. We look away from the natural realm and we focus our attention and expectation onto Jesus who birthed faith within us and who leads us forward into faith's perfection. Acts 2:42–47 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. (NIV) 3 P’s We Are Devoted To   1. We are a place of principle    Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (NIV) Acts 8:4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. (NIV) Acts 15:35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord. (NIV) Acts 14:25 and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia. (NIV) Acts 11:19 Meanwhile, the believers who had been scattered during the persecution after Stephen’s death traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch of Syria. They preached the word of God, but only to Jews. (NLT) John 8:31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. (NIV) 1. We live by God’s Word James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. (NIV) Luke 11:28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” (NIV)  Matthew 7:24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  (NIV)  2. We preach God’s Word 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. (NIV) 2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. (NIV) Romans 16:17   And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them. (NLT) 2 Peter 2:1–2 But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them. In this way, they will bring sudden destruction on themselves. 2  Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered. (NLT) 1 Peter 1:25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.”  And this is the word that was preached to you. (NIV) 2. We are a place of prayer   Act 2:42 “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” (NIV)               Acts 6:4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” (NASB) Romans 12:12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, (NASB) Colossians 4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. (NIV) 3. We are a place of power                                               Acts 2:43 “Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.” (NIV) 1 Corinthians 4:20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. (NIV) Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (NIV) Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. (NIV) 1 Thessalonians 1:5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. (NIV) 1 Corinthians 2:4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, (NIV)

REFLECTION QUOTES “Love is an act of the will…that leads to action on behalf of its object.” ~Voddie Baucham, Dean of Theology at African Christian University (Zambia) “A god who is all love, all grace, all mercy, no sovereignty, no justice, no holiness, and no wrath is an idol.” ~R. C. Sproul (1939-2017), theologian and pastor “We fear men so much, because we fear God so little. One fear cures another. When man's terror scares you, turn your thoughts to the wrath of God.” “It is not bigotry to be certain we are right; but it is bigotry to be unable to imagine how we might possibly have gone wrong.” ~Gilbert K. Chesterton (1874-1936), English writer and literary critic “It is not because the truth is too difficult to see that we make mistakes. It may even lie on the surface; but we make mistakes because the easiest and most comfortable course for us is to seek insight where it accords with our emotions — especially selfish ones.” “The simple step of a courageous individual is not to take part in the lie. ‘One word of truth outweighs the world.'” “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” ~Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008), novelist and famed Soviet dissident “Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the truth, we cannot know it.” ~Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), French mathematician and thinker “The wisdom of God devised a way for the love of God to deliver sinners from the wrath of God while not compromising the righteousness of God.” ~John Piper, Christian pastor and writer “At the cross, God accepted his own unbreakable terms of justice.” ~Philip Yancey, American author SERMON PASSAGE Romans 1:18-32, 12:18-21 (NASB) Romans 1 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written: “But the righteous one will live by faith.” 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and they exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature, 27 and likewise the men, too, abandoned natural relations with women and burned in their desire toward one another, males with males committing shameful acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper, 29 people having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unfeeling, and unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them. Romans 12 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all people. 19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

A Biblical response to prejudice and bias. 1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 2 For if there come unto your assembly a a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; 3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: 4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts It seems impossible to go through a day without reading a headline regarding racial tensions in this nation. This post started out addressing the pervasiveness of racism and how people, of all colors, are very adept in exercising it. However, racism cannot be addressed without first addressing the source of racism, bias. We live in a world full of bias. Recently Starbucks closed all its stores to conduct bias training in response to a race-based incident that generated a lot of negative press for the company. Like most secular organizations Starbucks while being on to something is also woefully missing the full Truth of the matter. A World of Bias A good first step would be for us to acknowledge that the world is biased. PUTTING ON OUR BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW- ACKNOWLEDGING BIAS Bias is a result of our separation from God. Our fallen nature combined with rebellion against God at the tower of Babel (Genesis 11: 1-9) resulted in a divided world where bias came into being. Due to the language differences people were scattered across the world resulting in different races, cultures, and customs. These groups developed a bias favorable towards people like themselves and developed an inherent distrust of outsiders. The effects of this world event continue to this day. EVERYONE HAS BIASES No one is bias-free.  Bias exists in everyone Ecclesiastes 7:20 ESV 20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins. Romans 3:23 ESV 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, WEAPON OF CHOICE OF THE ENEMY Bias is a weapon of choice for Satan.  In his effort to cause division bias is one of his most devastating weapons.  He started by dividing God and his creation through sin introduced in Genesis 5: 1-5. His division effort is now aimed within the Church. Indeed, one of the first problems in the earliest years of the Church was a result of bias. It is captured in Acts 6:1, “But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. Acts 6:1 ESV 1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food.”  Remember, the church in Acts was as unified as the church has ever been.  However, language and cultural bias invaded resulting in unequal treatment of widows. There are any number of Proverbs on the issue, but Proverbs 28:21 shows how easily people will yield to Satan's use of bias. Proverbs 28:21 ESV 21 To show partiality is not good, but for a piece of bread a man will do wrong. It says, “Showing partiality is never good, yet some will do wrong for a mere piece of bread.” OVERCOMING BIAS—PROPER SOURCE OF IDENTITY Bias is a result of mistaken identity.  As we base our identity upon superficial traits such as color, national origin, school attendance, sports enthusiasm, etc. we lose proper perspective of God creating everyone equal in value. For instance, when we choose to take pride in our race, we open ourselves to all the sins associated to pride. Let me explain. As I base some of my identity and value in being white, I automatically degrade the value of others who are different from me.  If race has value, then anyone without my racial characteristic is proportionally less valuable. This may sound simplistic, but it bears truth in the fruit of everyday living. Wherever racial pride exists so does racial tension.  Hence, every race that finds value and meaning within its race automatically creates the conditions for racism to manifest.  Racism and bias effects every race There are one race, the human race. Many scoffs and roll their eyes at this statement, but it does not make it any less true. The sooner we become race blind–focusing on the unifying power of one race, one blood, one people–the better off we will be. Our identity is found in God and God alone.  However, a fallen world causes people to look everywhere other than God for their value.  This hurts us is so many ways. GOD'S CALL God provides us the remedy to bias in Galatians 3:27-28, “And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. Galatians 3:27–28 ESV 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male, and female.  For you are all one in Christ Jesus.” When we properly find our identity and unity in Jesus Christ, we are then empowered to be impartial and unbiased. If this single call to unity is not enough, I will let God's Word, in both the Old and New Testament, provide further clarity on the issue. “Do not twist justice in legal matters by favoring the poor or being partial to the rich and powerful. Always judge people fairly.” Leviticus 19:15 “You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. “…It is wrong to show favoritism when passing judgment.” Proverbs 24:23 “Then Peter replied, ‘I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right.'”  Acts 10: 34-35 “My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others? For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, ‘You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor'—well, doesn't this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives?” James 2: 1-4 “I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality.” 1 Timothy 5:21, NASB 1 Timothy 5:21 ESV 21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality. “For there is no partiality with God.” Romans 2:11, NASB-Romans 2:11 ESV 11 For God shows no partiality. Just as there is no partiality with God so too should there be no partiality in us. BIAS VS. PREFERENCE There are complicating factors to this conversation.  For one, how should we address the idea of “preference”? We all have preferences.  We prefer certain types of music, food, entertainment, worship styles, Bible translations, etc.  Sometimes acting upon our preference creates the appearance of bias. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Sunday morning, a day where Christians are more divided than on any other day of the week. To an unfortunate degree, out of a sense of preference, whites tend to attend certain types of church services and blacks attend other services. A whole host of churches, including Slavic, Polynesian, Hispanic, etc. replicate this trend. Preferences exist and often cause people with like preferences to come together. James 2:1–4 ESV 1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Does this preference of church service, often falling along skin color, mean the church is segregated? Only to the point where a white person walking into a black service might be or genuinely feel unwelcome and vice versa.  Preference is not bias; poor and unwelcome treatment of visitors reveals bias. Never let your preferences become an excuse to act in a bias manner. BIAS VS. TRUTH The second complicating factor in the conversation of bias deals with speaking and standing upon God's Truth. The world interprets Christians speaking the Biblical truth on issues such as abortion, marriage, or sexual issues as being bias. This is wrong and untrue. Jn 17:17 John 17:17 ESV 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. Standing for God's truth appears biased and bigoted in this world only because the world's stances on these issues are so anti-God. We must NEVER yield or apologize for siding with God. However, we must try to speak God's truth in a way that demonstrates God's grace. To be certain, there are some who use God's truth as a bias weapon and use God's Word in a manner to only cause hurt. The mature, genuine Christian uses God's Words in a manner that may cause hurt but ALWAYS points to the healing that comes from Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 2:15 ESV 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans+8%3A31-39&version=NASB (Romans 8:31-39) L'amour de Dieu est folie! This French phrase translates, “The love of God is folly.” Brennan Manning in his book “The Ragamuffin Gospel” says that on Easter morning in France you'll see this phrase posted on the side of buildings, busses, and houses, and graffitied on sidewalks. The French sing it in their churches in worship and use it as a greeting when they wave to the neighbors. The love of God is folly. God's love is extravagant. In the season of Easter, we are remembering the profound truth that Jesus Christ, who was crucified and buried in a sealed tomb with Roman guards outside, is now risen from the dead never to die again. Death could not hold Him. Is God's initiative to send His Son into the world in love to save us and invite us to trust Him, a fool's mission? It does sound a little crazy that an all-powerful God would be born taking on the limits of humanity. He then would live a perfect life, reveal Himself in signs and wonders and miracles, teach about the kingdom of God, then face false charges, be arrested and crucified, though He was perfect. It seems illogical to take on the sins of all humanity and then be raised from the dead in victory to proclaim the forgiveness of sins to all who believe and the invitation to reconciliation in the love of God. Some say the love of God is folly. It is a fool's mission because it's illogical, irrational, and ill-advised. Perhaps even a wasted effort. The psalmist says, “The fool says in his heart there is no God” (Psalm 14:1). Contemporary philosophers might say it this way: The value of God is dead. It's as if some have concluded God is irrelevant. Could it be the German philosopher Feuerbach, who lived in the 19th century, was correct when he said God is the projection of human fears? That God didn't create us, but men created God in order to placate our own fears because of our weaknesses and limits? Is God just a figment of imagination to comfort our terrorized souls? Is Jesus alive from the dead? The truth of Easter's message is the heartbeat of God's revelation to the world. Paul said, “If Jesus Christ has not been raised, than your faith is worthless and you're still in your sins” (I Cor. 15:17). Ken Davis tells the story of a woman who saw her German Shepherd shaking the life out of a neighbor's pet rabbit. Her family didn't get along well with the neighbors, and she knew this would be a disaster. So she grabbed her broom and pummeled the dog until it finally dropped the dead rabbit from its mouth. Seeing the dead rabbit, she panicked. She grabbed the rabbit, took it inside, gave it a bath, blow dried its hair to its original fluffiness, combed its fur until it looked alive again, and then snuck into the neighbor's yard and propped it up so it looked alive. An hour later, she heard screams from next door. She went outside and asked what was going on. The neighbor woman said, Our rabbit! Our rabbit! He died two weeks ago, and we buried him. Now he's back! This is a funny and absurd story. Everybody knows dead rabbits don't come back to life. From a human logic standpoint, we'd also assert that when human beings breathe their last, they also don't come back to life. But the truth of the message of Easter says, Jesus Christ, who was crucified on the cross for the sins of the world – for my sins – was raised from the dead never to die again. In the message of Easter in Luke 24, the women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus' body. They found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. Two angels told them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? Jesus isn't here. He is risen, just as he said.” The disciples, when the women told them what they experienced and what the angel said, believed their words to be nonsense, foolishness. Luke, the physician actually uses a medical term for nonsense. It could be translated, the babbling...

What is the synchronicity of God?  A week ago, the director of my Bible study asked if anyone would share their testimony of how they came to know Jesus as their personal Savior.  Several people shared their story.  As I listened, I was thinking, "I should really video these." So, I brought my tablet on Sunday planning to ask a few of the people who shared the week before if I could record them.  Becky just happened to be the first person that I asked.  And this is her story: Hit by a Freight Train http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdpUHv9uIVM Is that not an amazing testimony of God having his hand in circumstances?  All of these "just happened to" occurrences.  If any one were not perfectly in line, she most likely wouldn't have lived. This is called: Synchronicity syn·chro·nic·i·ty the simultaneous occurrence of events that appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.   A word coined by Jung to say, "We know there is a connection here, but we just don't know what it is." (( Synchronicity. Wikipedia. Accessed 12 September 2013. )) It's God. More specifically, the overwhelming love of God that can take circumstances outside of his will to work within it. It is Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. ~ NASB (( Romans 8:28 (New American Standard Bible.)  )) There is No Such Thing as Coincidence A friend once told me that there is no word for coincidence, meaning random chance, in the original Hebrew language.  The equivalent word, mikreh, means "a happening from God." But Hebrew - loshon hakodesh - is the holy tongue; the language in which G-d Himself spoke; the language in which He gave us His holy Torah. Therefore, there can be no true equivalent to any Hebrew word in another language. Literally translated, mikreh means ìkarah míHaShem - it happened from G-d. The word itself testifies that nothing, absolutely nothing, occurs without His guidance, and this holds true from the most major to the most insignificant event. (( Jungreis, Rebbetzin. Coincidence or Mikreh. Hineni.org. 7 April 2005.  Accessed 12 September 2013. )) Also on Sunday during the praise time, another person shared that she was driving on the freeway and felt that God was telling her to pull over.  She did and a second later there was a huge accident, the cars right behind her were involved and if she hadn't pulled over, she would have been as well.
