After graduating from high school in 2002, Carter played four years of NCAA Division I Women's Soccer at the United States Naval Academy. Following her time at Navy, she spent nearly eight years in the United States Marine Corps having made multiple combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon her end of active service in 2013, Carter returned to Texas and spent the next three years as a reserve goalkeeper for the Houston Dash in the National Women's Soccer League. She made her first—and to date, only—professional appearance against the Washington Spirit on August 18, 2016. While playing at Houston, Carter also served as a volunteer assistant coach for the women's soccer programs at Huston–Tillotson University and Sam Houston State University. She has served not only as assistant coach for the Afghanistan women's national football team but also as an Olympic Development coach for South Texas Youth Soccer Association and the South Region (formerly Region III) of the United States Youth Soccer Association. Following her departure from the Afghan Women's National Team, Carter was nominated to run for Vice President of the United Soccer Coaches Board of Directors and in February 2019, accepted the Volunteer Assistant position for the University of Houston Women's Soccer Program. Episode 195 Caroline Stanley is a former pro soccer goalkeeper and an assistant coach with the University of Tulsa. In January of 2018, Stanley retired from professional soccer after playing in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) for the Seattle Reign (2015), Sky Blue New Jersey (2016) and Orlando Pride (2017). Stanley was a three-year letterwinner at the University of Southern California, after playing her freshman season at the University of Missouri.  She started in 55 of 58 games at USC, and had 245 saves in her career. Stanley represented the U.S. Youth Women’s National Team as a member of the U15, U17, U18 and U20 teams.  She also played for Lee’s Summit North High School, where she earned back-to-back Goalkeeper of the Year honors from the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association.  Stanley was a two-time first-team all-state honoree and Examiner all-area first-team selection.  She was also a member of the KCFC Intensity, Scream and Pink Panthers club teams, winning four state titles and capturing the 2011 Summer National Championship with KCFC. Stanley earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology in May 2015 from USC. In part 2 of our conversation with Caroline, we explore the world of professional soccer as she shares her experience playing in the National Women's Soccer League and the awesome story of her final pro game in Orlando last year. Yael Averbuch is a five year veteran of the National Women's Soccer League and has won two championship titles with FC Kansas City. On May 15, 2017, the UNC alumna helped coordinate the founding of the NWSL Players Association. The PA will cover all non-allocated players, as well as amateur players with NWSL affiliate teams. Averbuch joins Beyond the Game to talk through the timeline of the announcement, and the next steps of the NWSLPA. The mission of the NWSLPA reads as follows:  “We, the Non-Allocated Players of NWSL, vow to build on the opportunity that has been afforded to us, as well as work to achieve those goals that have not yet been attained. Two grind it out wins recently, may prove Pablo Mastroeni right. Then, focus shifts to the U.S. Men's National Teams, who both had games against Venezuela. The Senior team battled back for a 1-1 draw, but did anyone particularly impress? The U-20's got outplayed and almost run off the pitch, but actually held on and put up a fight to a 2-1 loss in extra time. How should fans feel about another Quarterfinal exit? Is this progress? Or should they be doing more? Rachael has plenty to say about a mostly MLS led 40-man roster of U.S. players heading into training camp for Gold Cup 2017.
