While large-scale farming of crops such as grains and pulses lend themselves readily to automation, a major portion of the global agriculture industry is based on orchard and nursery crops. These industries are still highly labour-intensive, but small Philadelphia-based startup called Burro has developed an autonomously guided vehicle that's designed to assist human pickers in fruit, vegetable and nursery operations. The devices shuffle the crops of the fields or orchards, freeing humans to pick, and pack. There are many luxury electric vehicle offerings on the market today, and a new, high-performance rival has just entered production. Lucid Motors has rolled the first vehicle off the firm's Casa Grande, Arizona assembly line, with customer deliveries expected to begin in late October. The $77,000 Lucid Air carries an EPA estimated range of over 500 miles and can be charged to 300 miles of range in 20 minutes. The company is already expanding production facilities to produce a new SUV product in 2023. Had a great time on the Podcast with 10 time National Finals Rodeo Qualifier Charly Crawford discussing the American Military Celebration. AMC a team roping event dedicated to thanking military veterans, first responders, and their families. Charly is a True Patriot & has a passion for giving back. Charly Crawford Bio Born and raised in Canby, Oregon Charly Crawford grew up with his dad who was a bareback rider and the self-proclaimed biggest team roping fan on earth. Charly's father, Chuck always had good horses and was one of the reasons the crossfire rule was implemented. Growing up in the Northwest, the summers were always fun because guys like Mike Beers, Allan Back, Jake Barnes, Clay Cooper, and Leo Camarillo would come rope at their house. Due to the average rainfall being so significant, they could only rope about 4 months of the year outdoors. Chuck had a roping club where there were weekly practices and monthly jackpots. Charly always got to rope with guys that gave him no choice but to rope the best he could. He made the amateur finals before he made the high school finals. He and his dad would jackpot together, and Charly even did his first roping school at the age of 12. It took winning for Charly to take roping seriously and once he was accustomed to winning, he never looked back. “I paid my fees for the Dummy Ropings by picking up beer cans around the arena” Before moving to Arizona to attend college at Central Arizona in Casa Grande, Charly took home a state championship and made the National High School Rodeo finals three times. College was a challenge because he suffered from a learning disability, and it was always more enticing to make money. He tended to business long enough to take some teaching courses, make the college finals three times, and work on his farrier skills but never graduated. Charly bought his PRCA permit in 1997 and filled it at the first rodeo he entered in Tacoma, WA. He was roping with Shane Crossley. In 1998 he won PRCA Resistol Rookie of the Year. The years leading into 2001 were inconsistent, but Charly was focused on gathering up some good horses and making his herd valuable. There are a lot of influences in our sport, but one piece of advice always stuck with Charly: “It's not how much you can win on your horses by how much your horses can keep you from winning” This led to the purchase of “Armadillo” which Charly acquired because of a bet. This horse proved himself by being named Horse of the BFI in 2001 and was Reserve Horse of the Year in 2005. You should know that through the roller coaster of life and the ups and downs on the rodeo trail that Charly always had an inkling to ride saddle broncs. His curiosity wasn't fueled by trying to do what his dad did, but because he rode a lot of outside horses and if they'd fart, he fell off. In 2003, Charly was on the kick that he wanted to ride broncs when he got a call from Bucky Campbell to rope. He told Bucky what he had on his mind and all Bucky could say is “Don't do it!” so, they roped for a while and Charly was back to having those thoughts about bronc riding again when he had the opportunity to roe with Tyler Magnus. Tyler also told Charly “Don't do it!” “When one door closes, another door opens” Pretty soon, Charly was back in the Northwest and Matt Funk called looking for a partner. By this time, Charly was strongly evaluating the option to ride broncs and had decided to back his goals down and get back to basics. He told Matt that he wanted to win the amateur circuit, make the circuit finals, and practice with a purpose. Together they won both amateur association finals and made the circuit finals, but Matt decided to go back to heading so Charly was thinking about bronc riding again. He'd started hanging out behind the chutes, learning the lingo, getting familiar with the equipment and how it all worked. Now its 2004 and Mike Beers calls, he also says “Don't do it!” so Charly is back to team roping and learns how to...

LUCID AIR IS OFFICIALLY IN PRODUCTION "After years of anticipation, the Lucid Air is finally hitting the roads. Lucid Motors has confirmed that production of the all-new luxury EV is now underway at its gleaming new factory in Casa Grande, Arizona. The first lot of customer cars, known as the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition, rolled off the assembly line on Tuesday, with deliveries slated to begin in late October." says The Robb Report: "Limited to 520, this $169,000 four-wheeler is a high-powered riff on Lucid's flagship electric sedan and boasts an industry-leading range of up to 520 miles, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). That makes it the longest-range, battery-powered vehicle the agency has ever rated. The new Arizona factory, which is set across a sprawling 590-acre site, will comprise an Advanced Manufacturing Plant (AMP-1) and a Lucid Powertrain Manufacturing (LPM-1) facility that will allow the marque to build all the necessary components in-house to theoretically speed up production and save on costs." CEO Wayne Griffiths and the company's Executive Committee members visited Europe's largest electric vehicle plant to mark the start of production of the new model. The CUPRA Born will also be present at Automobile Barcelona 2021, which kicks off next Thursday 30th September and will mark the start of the model's international launch plan" With the launch of this model, which will be on the market from November, a new distribution strategy for a different customer relationship with the agency model will be launched. In addition, customers will have the option to contract the CUPRA Born through a subscription model. The Zwickau plant is the Volkswagen Group's first production plant for 100% electric vehicles and is considered the largest and most efficient electric factory in Europe. With a daily output of up to 1,400 vehicles, the German plant has an annual production capacity of around 330,000 electric cars. In addition to the CUPRA Born, four other models, the Volkswagen ID3, the Volkswagen ID4, the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron, are produced at the plant. It's called BrightDrop, and like GM's legacy brands that are electrifying, it, too, will use the company's forthcoming Ultium batteries and Ultium Drive electric motors. Unlike the rest of GM's brands, this one is aimed squarely at the fleet market. At the time, GM CEO Mary Barra revealed that Fedex would be BrightDrop's first customer. On Tuesday, BrightDrop announced that Verizon will also start using the electric vans." according to Ars Technica: "Verizon will use a second BrightDrop vehicle, called the EV410. This uses the same battery pack and motor as the EV600 that we saw in FedEx colors at the start of the year. It will also offer the same 250-mile (402 km) range and come with the same package of safety systems. Meanwhile, BrightDrop is completing the first production EV600s, which are destined to start work for Fedex this holiday season." Local authorities told Reuters the company had applied for permission to have 9,000 people on-site, beyond pandemic rules which limit such gatherings to 5,000. A website set up to register for the event says the day will involve a "behind the scenes" factory tour and the opportunity to ride in a Model Y, the car that will be produced on-site if the factory is approved." Victoria's safety regulator for electricity, gas and pipelines has granted Neoen and Tesla permission for “re-energisation testing of the Victorian Big Battery,” Neoen said in an emailed statement on Monday." according to Lora Kolodny at CNBC: "The Victorian Big Battery is owned and operated by Neoen and is one of the world's largest energy storage systems. It's intended to help avoid blackouts in the region and power homes using electricity from renewable power sources like solar and wind. The fire at the battery site in Geelong, Victoria, took place on July 30. Two Tesla Megapacks erupted into flames at the 300 megawatt (450 megawatt hours) facility. No injuries were reported, but the fire triggered a toxic air alert to surrounding neighborhoods." Dubbed Spectre, the British super-luxe automaker's first EV will begin deliveries in late 2023, which has now become a key milestone in Rolls-Royce's roadmap to full electrification by the end of the decade." says Autoblog; "Apart from the name and layout, Rolls is being stingy with specifics, telling us only that, despite what appears to be a somewhat familiar silhouette, this is an all-new model built on the company's latest architecture, like Phantom, Ghost and Cullinan. Spectre is not merely a derivative of the Wraith, RR says. And with good reason, because Wraith was engineered around the essence of its V12. Spectre's character, we expect, will be defined by its near-silent, vibration-free electric powertrain, which makes for a very different acoustic backdrop, but that's a challenge Rolls-Royce engineers are prepared – arguably even predestined – to overcome." Production of the Tevva truck is scheduled to start in July 2022." according to electrive: "the new Tevva Truck is the first UK-developed 7.5-tonne electric truck designed for mass production. The model is to be manufactured at a yet-to-be-built factory in London's Thames Freeport. When the factory there comes on stream, production capacity is expected to be 3,000 trucks per year. However, Tevva is talking about starting production at the London plant in 2023. The total cost of ownership is said to be comparable to that of a diesel vehicle and Tevva says: “From about 3,000 km or with a monthly consumption of 500 litres of diesel, the costs are identical.”" Read more: https://www.electrive.com/2021/09/28/tevva-presents-7-5-tonne-truck-with-range-extender/ UK FUEL SHORTAGE LEADS TO 1,600% SURGE IN EV ONLINE SEARCHES Read more: https://insideevs.com/news/536914/fuel-shortage-ev-online-searches/ RIDE-HAILING SERVICE OFFERS EVS AS DEFAULT OPTION https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9232/ride-hailing-service-offers-evs-as-default-option/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM If you have gone back to fossil cars, or play along, imagine you HAD decided to switch back from EV to combustion, what's the reason? VW EV PRODUCTION IN ZWICKAU NEAR CAPACITY A graph published by VW shows the production output of their Zwickau plant has been rising since the start of 2021. The MEB-based cars are all electric such as the ID.3. But a total of 6 models from various VW brands will be made there, such as the ID.5 which hasn't stated production yet. The production capacity is 330,000 EVs per year from this one facility, about 20% of VW's 1.5million EVs they are on track to make every year by 2025. Now we see the daily run rate hitting 1,200. When it gets to 1,500 that's capacity for a 5 day week with some weeks for shutdown every year. So the chip shortage hasn't affected the MEB cars out of Zwickau. It will definitely be affecting VW ICE cars tho so that suggests they are willing to sacrifice ICE to make EVs, to hit CO2 targets in order to avoid fines, and also we know the MEB-based cars are profitable too. HERBERT DIESS: "THE MAIN BENCHMARK IS TESLA" Herbert Diess appeared on a German podcast yesterday morning called The Pioneer Morning Briefing. For my German listeners, this is what he had to say about the speed Tesla works at, and yes I'll try to translate after this clip. Something like: "The true benchmark is really Tesla, the speed yes, with the same suppliers Tesla manages to do product development with the same suppliers in half the time which is much more aggressive. They can of course take a lot more risk than we can." But what about Cybertruck, long overdue Semi Truck, the Roadaster 2? It doesn't feel VW wants to be more like Tesla because that kind of -ship-it-now-and-fix-it-later style is not the German way, but there's definitely capital to be gained by saying 'hey look at what these guys are doing, we need to change'. It helps his political battle to push through reform at VW. It's important to remember that each road-legal car has its own VIN, which is a string of 17 characters containing the vehicle's unique identifier. This advancement is a critical one in the long process of bringing the much-anticipated Air EV to market. " reports Finbold.com: "Lucid will open the doors of its Advanced Manufacturing Plant (AMP-1) in Casa Grande to the media, financial community, policymakers, and a select group of customers. The series of events for the week of September 27th, 2021, will see a small group of guests have the opportunity to observe manufacturing methods for Lucid Air and learn more about Lucid's revolutionary EV technology from Lucid's top engineers." Along with the 520 miles of EPA range, Lucid appear to be ticking all the boxes to be close to those first deliveries. There's a 64.4kWh battery pack option in the truly lightweight option or you can go up to 99.6kWh for the dual-motor, maximum horsepower edition. There's also a configuration for a four-seater car, where the battery is packed into the base of the chassis as it is in skateboard-style platforms." evo magazine adds: "Both layouts have their inherent pros and cons thanks to where the mass sits within the chassis, but whereas you might think models fitted with a stacked battery pack might be at a disadvantage thanks to a higher centre of gravity, many engineers continue to struggle with developing ride and handling packages that deal with the physics associated with a driver being sat directly above, not in the midst of so much weight. The stacked batteries will also allow lotus engineers to mount the seat much lower than in a car, again mimicking the weight distribution of traditional IC cars." The Ford Mustang Mach-E is only rated a Top Safety Pick (no +) due to the Select and California Route 1 trims' headlights being rated "Marginal."" Audi has only shared range estimates for the 50 models so far, which sits at 241 miles according to the EPA. We anticipate the 40 model will achieve a slightly higher range number, as the ID.4's AWD configuration takes a slight range hit compared with its RWD counterpart." Headed to US dealerships in fall 2021, the new EQS will start from $102,310 (plus destination), Mercedes confirmed today." according to Slashgear: " Eligible buyers may be able to get the $7,500 federal tax incentive for EVs, however, and any state and local incentives and rebates they could qualify for. The 2022 EQS 580 4MATIC Sedan, meanwhile, will start at $119,110 (plus destination). That adds a second electric motor for all-wheel drive. There'll be three trims on offer, starting with Premium, then rising to Exclusive, and then finally Pinnacle. All three will be offered on both the EQS 450+ and EQS 580 4MATIC versions of the car." Renault Group says it is investing more than €550 million in the production facilities there and in improved workplace ergonomics." says electrive.com: "The first step in this transformation has now been the conversion of an assembly line that can now produce numerous models from various vehicle classes, including the Mégane E-Tech Electric. A central component of the site's electromobility strategy is the on-site battery production and assembly that was officially announced in the summer. This is based on a partnership between the Renault Group and Envision AESC. Join Christian Jones and Regan Bell with their guest, Jared Miller, as they chat about the world of science fiction, particularly in film. Jared is a library assistant at a public library. In his free time, he watches science fiction movies of the 50s and 60s as a pastime. Today, he talks about his fascination with science fiction films in the 50s and 60s and events of that period which greatly influenced them. There's a lot to take away from this episode, so make sure to tune in and enjoy the show! A Product of Its Time Cheap effects, weird-looking, and plainly old – that is what most people would describe science fiction movies from the 50s and 60s. But for Jared, these come with the complete package. The social, cultural, and political motives that influenced these films made Jared fascinated with them. After World War 2, American science fiction films boomed their way into popularity which paved the way to the ones at present. The 1950s was the golden age of science fiction. Jared was also amazed at the art form applied to the movies. Practical effects were the only technology available at that time, yet the intention behind and the arduous production process fueled his obsession. The movies also reflect society and show a visual representation of what people thought of the future. An artist's imagination of how the world would look and the technology they believe would be possible is what Jared loves about these movies. While there are issues represented in these films that are now unacceptable, Jared reminds us that these are products of the time. It only shows how the times have changed, including what people believe in. About Jared Miller: Jared Miller lived in Pensacola for 13 years, where he attended middle school and high school.

This week I had the pleasure to speak with George Young. He's a four time Olympian, three times in the Steeplechase, and once each in the Marathon and 5k. He's an inductee in the NM Sports Hall of Fame, has a bronze medal from the 1968 games in Mexico City, graduated from the University of Arizona, taught, coached, and was an athletic director at Casa Grande. George talks about some training, his favorite workout, how he got into running and how he fell into sports in college. He credits his hard work and says that he isn't special and didn't do anything special. He just worked hard. He mentions training with Billy Mills and competing against Steve Prefontaine. He talks about his bronze medal in Mexico City, how close he was to gold, and how that spurred him to two indoor World Records. We also touch on coaching, teaching, and his years being an athletic director. He also talks about what it looks like staying active at his age now. George has a lot of stories and I feel like we barely scratched the surface, even in a longer episode. It truly was a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy hearing him talk. So hydrate well, be kind, use George's words to get you motivated, and keep running, New Mexico.

Marco Casagrande, Finland, Shenzhen Marco Casagrande (born 1971) graduated from the Helsinki University of Technology Department of Architecture in 2001. From the early stages of his career Casagrande started to mix architecture with other disciplines of art and science landing with a series of ecologically conscious architectural installations around the world. All in all, more than 86 realized works in 16 countries. He is the laureate of the European Prize for Architecture 2013, Committee of International Architecture Critics CICA Award 2013 for conceptual and artistic architecture and UNESCO & Locus Foundation's Global Award for Sustainable Architecture 2015. Casagrande's works and teaching are moving freely in-between architecture, landscape architecture, urban and environmental design and science, environmental art and circus adding up into cross-over architectural thinking of «commedia dell'architettura», a broad vision of built human environment tied into social drama and environmental awareness. «There is no other reality than nature». He views architects as design shamans merely interpreting what the bigger nature of the shared mind is transmitting. He views cities as complex energy organisms in which different overlapping layers of energy flows are determining the actions of the citizens as well as the development of the city. By mixing environmentalism and urban design Casagrande is developing methods of punctual manipulation of the urban energy flows in order to create an ecologically sustainable urban development towards the so-called Third Generation City. The theory views the future urban development as the ruin of the industrial city, an organic machine ruined by nature including human nature. Urban Acupuncture: a cross-over architectural manipulation of the collective sensuous intellect of a city. The City is viewed as a multi-dimensional sensitive energy-organism, a living environment. Urban acupuncture aims into a touch with this nature. UA: Sensitivity to understand the energy flows of the collective chi beneath the visual city and reacting on the hot spots of this chi. Architecture as environmental art is in the position to produce the acupuncture needles for the urban chi. A weed will root into the smallest crack in the asphalt and eventually break the city. Urban acupuncture is the weed, and the acupuncture point is the crack. The possibility of the impact is total, connecting human nature as part of nature. The theory opens the door for uncontrolled creativity and freedom. Ruin is something man-made having become part of nature. Casagrande has been teaching in 65 academic institutions in 25 countries since the year 2000 including the Aalto University, Helsinki University of Art and Design, Tokyo University Tadao Ando Laboratory and China Central Academy of Fine Arts. He was a visiting professor at the Bergen School of Architecture 2001–2004 and Taiwanese Tamkang University Department of Architecture 2004-2009, Principal of the independent cross-disciplinary research centre Ruin Academy in Taipei and Taitung, Taiwan (2010 -) and Artena, Italy (2013 -) in cooperation with the Aalto University's SGT Sustainable Global Technologies Centre. Casagrande is the Vice-President of the International Society of Biourbanism (2014 -). Currently he holds the professorship of architecture at the Bergen School of Architecture, Norway. Marco Casagrande is the Principal of the Casagrande Laboratory (2003-), a Finland based internationally operating multi-disciplinary architecture and innovation office.
Sam in Casa Grande went on a date with Hailey, now she is blowing him off and he wants to know why. Their date was at a BBQ joint in Mesa, and he says that she has an amazing personality. He also said that, quote "from the moment he met her, he knew he wanted to be with her". He claims the date went great, so why is she blowing him off?
In 1883, Missouri real estate broker James Reavis announced that he held title to a huge tract of land in the Arizona Territory. If certified, the claim would threaten the livelihoods of thousands of residents. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the Baron of Arizona, one of the most audacious frauds in American history. We'll also scrutinize British statues and puzzle over some curious floor numbers. Intro: In 1891, Charles Dodgson wrote a curiously unforthcoming letter to Nellie Bowman. On today's episode, Tony chats with Actress, Writer, and Producer Lauren Swickard about the difficulties of typecasting, the nature of Social Media, and creating our own content in today's industry. Actress, writer and producer Lauren Swickard has written and sold multiple original screenplays throughout her short but impressive professional career. Most recently, she created, wrote, produced and starred in A California Christmas, one of a small handful of feature films to start and complete production in the midst of the pandemic. The film is in post-production and is slotted for broad release in December, 2020 as a Netflix Original. Lauren's most recent endeavor is lead writer and producer for Casa Grande - an episodic series she created that is scheduled for distribution in January, 2021. The narrative explores the dramatic truths of our country's allure to immigrants and illustrates what mankind will endure in pursuit of the American dream. A Cincinnati native, Lauren excelled in the arts at a young age. Her artistic talent stems from her early years in musical theatre, pre-professional ballet, and studies at The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Lauren also attended the prestigious School of American Ballet and she has performed on the professional stage with the Cincinnati Ballet Company. Lauren pulls from more than seven years and 40+ credits of screen acting experience, performing roles on feature films, award winning short films, and television series in drama and comedy. She began her professional acting career in high school with a small role on the TV Movie, "Shelter," working with JJ Abrams. Now represented by Powerline Entertainment, she can be seen in Netflix's "Dear White People," "Roped" and countless projects currently airing on the Lifetime Movie Network, the Syfy channel, and Amazon Prime.

On today’s podcast: New Chevy Bolt and Bolt EUV Hyundai Reveals IONIQ 5’s Living Space Tesla Took 80% of U.S. EV Market Tesla China offering free trial of Enhanced Autopilot Apple and Nissan NOT Working Together Lucid Close to SPAC Deal New Citroën C4 & ë-C4 officially launched in the UK China’s cheapest electric car coming to Europe Show #995 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th February. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NEW CHEVY BOLT AND BOLT EUV On Valentines day we got to see the refreshed Bolt and the new Bolt EUV. Both are built on the original Bolt mechanics, so no Ultium batteries here. But it's LG Chem cells you find in ID.4, Zoe, Audi etc, so the cells are good. "This newly refreshed and improved Bolt EV actually has an MSRP $5,000 lower than the 2021, with its base price of $31,995 (includes destination charges). The slightly larger Bolt EUV gets a slightly higher price tag at $33,995. Gone are the acres of hard plastics that previously lent it an economy-car vibe. Instead, soft-touch surfaces make the interior much more in-line with pricing." says Domenick Yoney InsideEVs: "The Bolt EV also gets a new 10.2-inch touchscreen in the center stack with a fresh layout and allows for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. With regards to connectivity, it also features a 4G LTE wi-fi hotspot, along with (optional on the Bolt EV, standard on the EUV) wireless charging for phones. Both the EUV and refreshed EV will enter production later this spring and be available from dealers this summer. For those who want a nicely-appointed Bolt EUV as early as possible, Chevrolet is offering a launch edition featuring Super Cruise, a sunroof, unique wheels, special badging and an illuminated charge port for $43,495, which can be reserved on its website." The driver and front passenger seats are equipped with leg rests that allow passengers to ‘relax and recharge’ while their vehicle is being recharged. All seats can be operated and repositioned, making it easier for adults in the front to care for children and pets seated in the rear." https://news.hyundaimotorgroup.com/MediaCenter/News/Press-Releases/Hyundai-Reveals-IONIQ-5-s-Living-Space-and-Sustainable-Interior-Ahead-of-Virtual-World-Premiere TESLA TOOK 80% OF U.S. EV MARKET "If it wasn't already clear Tesla has the US electric vehicle market locked down, the latest data from an Automotive News/Experian partnership released Sunday should underscore the notion. Of all the EVs registered in the US in 2020, Tesla vehicles made up 79% of them. That's not a typo: seventy-nine percent. That leaves just 21% to carve up for the numerous other automakers and highlights an immense challenge for legacy automakers to unseat Tesla's cache with EVs." says CNET: "Americans registered 200,691 Tesla cars in 2020 -- a 16% increase from 2019, according to the data. The automaker's four models currently on sale also each found a slot to fill out the top five EVs last year. The only non-Tesla is the Chevrolet Bolt EV, which was the third-placed EV on the list with 19,664 registered." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-cars-ev-registrations-us/#ftag=CAD-09-10aai5b TESLA CHINA OFFERING FREE TRIAL OF ENHANCED AUTOPILOT "As part of their Chinese New Year celebrations, Tesla is now offering a trial of Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) in China." says Drive Tesla Canada: "The first offer is for new buyers who received their vehicles before February 15. Tesla will provide a free trial of EAP until February 26. This offer is only valid for those who didn’t buy EAP or FSD at the time of purchase. The second offer is for those who purchase either EAP or FSD at the time of ordering. If you take delivery between February 16 and June 30, 2021, you will get a 30-day trial to test out the self-driving software. This latest offers comes on the heels of Tesla reintroducing EAP in a number of markets outside North America, including China. The likely reason behind the promotional offer is to get more customers in China to buy the FSD package. CEO Elon Musk said the FSD adoption rate in China is only around 1-2%" https://driveteslacanada.ca/news/tesla-china-offering-free-trial-of-enhanced-autopilot/ APPLE AND NISSAN NOT WORKING TOGETHER According to Business Insider: Nissan and Apple held brief talks on developing an autonomous car together, per The Financial Times. The talks stopped when Apple and Nissan disagreed over the electric vehicle's branding, sources said. South Korean firm Hyundai had previously confirmed, then denied, being in talks with Apple about the car. https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-car-electric-autonomous-self-driving-nissan-talks-hyundai-2021-2?r=US&IR=T LUCID CLOSE TO SPAC DEAL "Lucid Motors Inc is getting close to a deal to go public at a roughly $12-billion valuation after veteran dealmaker Michael Klein's blank-check acquisition firm launched a financing effort to back the transaction, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. The merger between Lucid and Klein's Churchill Capital IV Corp would be the biggest in a string of deals by electric vehicle makers such as Nikola Corp and Fisker Inc that have gone public by combining with special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs)." according to Autoblog: "To help fund construction of a U.S. assembly plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, Lucid was boosted by a $1 billion investment in 2018 by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Churchill Capital IV's share price has surged more than 300% since Bloomberg News reported in January that it was in talks to merge with Lucid." NEW CITROËN C4 & Ë-C4 OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED IN THE UK Available from just over £30k. 100kW motor, 100kW DCFC and 50kWh battery. CHINA’S CHEAPEST ELECTRIC CAR COMING TO EUROPE "The microcar called Mini EV, which GM offers in China through its partner Wuling is very popular because of its low price. Now the Mini EV is en route to Europe – as FreZe Nikrob EV via the Latvian company Dartz Motorz at a starting price of 9,999 euros." says electrive. 124 miles. Germany, Norway and France. TESLA MODEL S “REFRESH” SPIED TRACK TESTING "New photos from the Tesla Fremont Factory obtained by Teslarati show the new Refreshed Tesla Model S and its new features, confirming the long-time speculation of whether the company’s flagship sedan would be updated nine years after its initial release. Now, photographs of the new Model S have been captured, showing a wider body, revised fog lights, new wheels, and several other cosmetic revisions." says TEslarati: "A few of the more notable changes are a new front diffuser, a part that became standard with the newly-designed Plaid Model S. A diffuser displaces air underneath the vehicle’s body, increasing aerodynamic performance and making the flow of air more efficient during travel. Additionally, the front fascia has also been revised slightly. This is the second revision Tesla has made to this portion of the Model S since its release. The new design includes a larger central air intake vent for improved airflow and ventilation to the battery pack. This eliminates the possibility of overheating and improves battery lifetime and performance." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-refresh-plaid-spy-photos/ LUCID MOTORS ADDS SECOND RETAIL LOCATION IN SOUTH FLORIDA Lucid Motors today announced the opening of its newest retail location in South Florida – the Lucid Studio in West Palm Beach at Rosemary Square – on Saturday, January 23. The first available Lucid Air model will be the exclusive, limited production Dream Edition, available from $169,000 ($161,500 after federal tax credit) , featuring a projected 503 miles of range, with 1080 hp and a quarter mile time of 9.9 seconds. Lucid Air production begins in Spring 2021 at the newly completed Lucid Advanced Manufacturing Plant (AMP-1) in Casa Grande, Arizona. https://www.lucidmotors.com/media-room/lucid-motors-adds-second-south-florida-location-in-west-palm-beach/ TESLA MODEL 3 IS 2020'S BEST-SELLING EV IN CHINA, COMPANY ACHIEVES 11% MARKET SHARE "Tesla began mass deliveries to its first customers in China in January 2020, and has had tremendous success in 12 months. Giga Shanghai has steadily ramped up production to meet market demands for Model 3. Last year, Tesla registered 139,925 Model 3s in China, making it the best-selling model in the EV market, according to EV-Sales. The company has an 11% share in the EV segment in the largest car market in the world." says Tesmanian: "The second most popular model in 2020 was the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV, which registered 119,255 units. " Also on the Top Top 20 list, names like Baojun E-Series, BYD Han, NIO ES6, MG ZSEV and WM Motor EX5. https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-became-the-best-selling-ev-in-china-in-2020-with-an-11-market-share BMW TARGETS PRE-PANDEMIC MARGINS WHILE INVESTING IN ELECTRIC CARS " BMW aims to return to its pre-pandemic operating margin target as the global economy recovers, but big investments in electric cars mean the automaker will have to simplify its vehicle portfolio, its finance chief told Reuters." according to Autblog: "Changing car line-ups from petrol and diesel to electric versions to meet emissions targets in China and Europe, not to mention trying to compete with electric carmaker Tesla, is hugely expensive, and was a driving factor in the recent merger of PSA and Fiat Chrysler to form Stellantis, the world's fourth-largest carmaker. But because electric vehicles (EV) are expensive to develop and still account for a small portion of sales, they are less profitable for BMW. So the premium carmaker is embarking on a push to cut complexity — reducing engine variants and options for different vehicles, scrapping features customers don't use, plus overhauling software to focus on a simpler, more efficient way of building vehicles." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/23/bmw-profit-margins-electric-vehicles/ VIETNAM'S FIRST AUTOMAKER CLAIMS IT'S COMING TO AMERICA WITH ELECTRIC CROSSOVERS "we may soon be adding two new crossovers from VinFast, Vietnam’s first homegrown automaker. VinFast previously made waves for not only being Vietnam’s first modern automaker, but for filling out its lineup with borrowed BMW drivetrains through Austrian manufacturer Magna Steyr." says Jalopnik: ". Both new models are crossover EVs, and the company claims it will be capable of delivering cars to American customers by the summer of next year. The company’s first EV offering, the VF33, will be the bigger of the two and will compete against midsize crossovers — so something like a Ford Explorer. The drivetrain features a pair of 150-kilowatt (201-horsepower) electric motors, with one motor mounted to each axle. The motors are powered by a 106 kWh battery pack. VinFast claims internal testing revealed a range of up to 342 miles. The second, smaller crossover is confusingly called the VF32, though it’s visually distinct from its bigger sibling. The 32 is similar in size to the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E electric crossovers and will be available with either one or two motors and a 90 kWh battery pack" https://jalopnik.com/vietnams-first-automaker-claims-its-coming-to-america-w-1846113160 FIAT 500E DOMINATES ITALY’S EV MARKET IN DECEMBER "Full electric cars pop to an astonishing all-time monthly high of 7,255 units, up 753% YoY from just 850 registrations a year before. To put things in perspective, it’s worth remembering that total BEV sales in Italy for the entire 2019 were just over 10,000 units! The incredible performance means December market share for full electric vehicles climbs to a sizeable 6%. It was a meager 0.6% just a year ago." reports CleanTechnica: "The brand new Fiat 500e — following a good start in November — trashes BEV records by going straight to the top with 1,549 registrations, beating the monthly sales record of 880 units set by Tesla Model 3 in September. This is an incredible result which was probably helped by fleet purchases from carsharing companies, in what is the 500e’s first full month of deliveries in its home country. Will the mini-Fiat keep up with such sales levels in 2021, and spread throughout Europe’s city streets? Second best, Renault Zoe also shines with its own historic high, 1,153 registrations which would have made it the top seller in any other month of the year." https://cleantechnica.com/2021/01/24/fiat-500e-dominates-italys-ev-market-in-december-bevs-grow-eightfold/ LET'S TAKE A SNEAK PEEK INSIDE THE LORDSTOWN ENDURANCE ELECTRIC PICKUP "Lordstown Endurance is one of the several upcoming all-electric pickup trucks in the U.S. The company promises that it will start production in September 2021, targeting the fleets." say Inside EVs: "Here we have a few short videos that present the interior of the Alpha prototype (the production version is expected to look very similar).b As we can see, it's pretty basic, but the wide array of the instrument cluster/infotainment displays and center console make it look modern. We must remember that in this segment, Lordstown Motors must focus on cost, as well as simple and reliable solutions for a work truck, rather than anything fancy that would additionally require a lot of time and resources to develop. People who want to opt for a premium interior, surely will stick with Rivian." https://insideevs.com/news/481756/video-inside-lordstown-endurance-electric-pickup/ FIRST ZERO EMISSIONS BATTERY POWERED UNPLUGGED CRAWLER CRANE The LR 1250.1 unplugged is the world’s first battery-powered crawler crane. It is driven by an electric engine. During operation the crane can be connected to a conventional electric supply or without a cable, therefore “unplugged”. The capacity of the battery is designed for 4 hours lifting operation. There are no compromises regarding performance or availability when compared with the diesel version LR 1250.1. They are using 700V DC battery tech with 196kWh and they charge at 40kW (3-phase AC 64A) or optional 80kW (3-phase AC 125A).” https://evobsession.com/less-noise-from-the-first-zero-emissions-battery-powered-unplugged-crawler-crane/ SK INNOVATION BATTERY SWAPPING SCALES UP IN CHINA "The South Korean company SK Innovation is entering the battery replacement technology business in China. This has been made possible by a strategic investment in the company specialised in battery swapping called Blue Park Smart Energy (BPSE) that is a subsidiary of the BAIC Group." writes electrive: "The move into the area of scaling up battery swapping operations has been a long-prepared move. Back in 2013, SK Innovation founded a joint venture with the BAIC Group to manufacture batteries. SK Innovation says that this investment really laid the foundation for the promotion of the company’s battery service (BaaS) business in China. BaaS means Battery as a Service, and is a service industry based on EV batteries rental, charging, reuse, and recycling. SK Innovation and BPSE decided to promote cooperation in the BaaS business through a business agreement and create synergies with China’s existing battery business." https://www.electrive.com/2021/01/24/sk-innovation-battery-swapping-scales-up-in-china/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK What do you want to be able to do to, or with, your car from a mobile app or web dashboard?
