This weeks View from the Press Box is John Powers. Many sportswriters consider him the dean of Olympic journalists; he has covered every Olympic Games (summer and winter) since 1976, excepting the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, when the U.S. boycott led the Russians to refuse to issue a visa. He may well have reported from more Olympics than any other American sportswriter. Powers was an integral part of a highly regarded sportswriting team at the Globe. “From the mid-1970s to the early '80s,” Sports Illustrated wrote in 2009, “the Globe contained arguably the greatest collection of reporting talent ever assembled in a sports section." He has also written or co-authored 11 books.

The Italian Stallion Dom Rizzuto sits down with Georgia Lomis-Futeran whatever her surname is to discuss the legal battle between the US Women's Soccer team and USA Soccer and what the recent court decision means for not just for the USWST but women's sport as a whole.

Few people have covered US Women's soccer more closely than Meg Linehan of The Athletic. Wes talks to Meg about the state of women's soccer, but also her path to being a rare full-time women's soccer journalist.
US women's national soccer team (USWNT) head coach Jill Ellis ended her term in July on a high note. After leading her team to victory at the Women's World Cup in France, Ellis announced her intention to step down as the USWNT's coach. According to her, talks with her family about the exit began December last year. Sources did not specify any reason behind the coach's decision, but Ellis said the timing felt right for her, her family, and the whole team. Ellis had already won eight tournaments for the US Soccer before becoming the eighth USWNT coach in 2014. During her time as head coach, Ellis brought the team to new heights by breaking records. She is the only coach who was able to win two consecutive Women's World Cup titles—the 2015 and the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cups. These victories contributed to the team's record of 102 wins, 7 losses, and 18 draws. USWNT member Rose Lavelle, awarded as the third-best player at the World Cup in France, expressed her sadness over Ellis's decision. However, Lavelle is also glad that Ellis came out on top and now has more time to spend with her family. Megan Rapinoe, another celebrated player of the USWNT, said that she was not surprised with the news. For her, being the head coach of the USWNT is a tough job, and being able to leave with enormous achievements is a good way to exit. Before completely stepping away from the USWNT, Ellis will finish the team's victory tour until October. She is set to take on the role of US Soccer ambassador following the tour.

The title is obviously outrageous, but if you read through to the end you might get the point. After the US Women's Soccer team won the 2019 FIFA World Cup, a chant of "equal pay" could be heard in the crowd. In addition to the emotionomics chant heard by the crowd, numerous news outlets including Vanity Fair, CNN, VOX, Splinter, and Business Insider led with misleading headlines about viewership in the Women's World Cup vs. the 2018 Men's World Cup. Let's break down the numbers to understand why this is another manufactured, and completely baseless complaint. The basic idea is that the US Women's team is being paid less for the same (or more) viewership as the US Men's soccer team. The official statement was that women's team is making only 40% of what the men's team is paid. Let's talk about viewers "The Women's World Cup ratings top Men's 2018 Championship Game by 22%" Here's the big difference. By big, I mean it is a massive, un-ignorable difference. The 22% win by the Women's team is talking about the viewership in the United States. This year, the Women's Cup garnered almost 15 million TV viewers inside the US. That is, in fact, higher than the US viewers for the 2018 Men's cup. The problem? Read more at this link --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodmorningliberty/support

+++ YOU CAN WIN BUT LOSE +++ Have you ever heard this statement: you can win the battle but lose the war? When I first heard it, it didn't make sense to me. How can I win a battle but lose the war? Aren't they the same? I eventually found out that they were not. Did you find that out as well? What I learned over time is that the battle is the immediate skirmish, just what's before you, but the war is that which is beyond you — the bigger picture. Is that how you've come to understand it? This could not be more true than the 2019 World Cup Women's Soccer Team. Really? How so? Take a listen to this episode and listen to me explode on this theme of winning a war but losing the battle. This week Brian goes over the newest national phenomenon that being the exciting historical run of the US Women's Soccer team to World Cup excellence. He discusses if the sudden interest in Soccer is here to stay or if it's just a passing fad in the States. He discusses all things 4th of July like Killer Shark attacks and how the movie Jaws has ruined him for life. Shark Attacks can happen at anytime! Blowing up fireworks on July 4th is quite American as well, but blowing them up in your hands when you're a professional athlete who uses those same hands is not a good idea. Just ask New York Giants linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul. He has big problems on his hands like his contract and his epidermis. Brian quickly reviews the NBA free agency period. LaMarcus Alrdridge's new team and what could have been in Sacramento- an all-time bad chemistry team for the ages. Finally, he weighs on the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest and all the festivities that encompass this gastronomical event. Spoiler alert-Joey Chestnut DID NOT WIN. Oh, and did he mention his car at all?
