Join Swami Padmanabha and Father Adam Bucko, a contemplative author, Episcopal priest, founder of the Reciprocity Foundation and The Center for Spiritual Imagination, and committed voice in the movement for renewal of Christian Contemplative Spirituality and the growing New Monastic movement, come together to share their experiences of Radical Activism. Quote From Radical Personalism that opens the discussion:“In connection to the above point, social action and involvement should be encouraged in the Gaudiya community for those so inclined, and they should be properly educated by the elders as to how to engage in compassionate social action. We call this Radical Activism…'A spirituality that is only private and self-absorbed, one devoid of an authentic political and social consciousness, does little to halt the suicidal juggernaut of history. On the other hand, an activism that is not purified by profound spiritual and psychological self-awareness and rooted in divine truth, wisdom, and compassion, will only perpetuate the problem it is trying to solve, however righteous its intentions.'* Properly executed and complemented, every action can become prayer and every prayer can become action that influences the world in ways beyond our imagination.”* (Andrew Harvey) Adam shares what Radical Personalism is to him: that each and every one of us should respond to the cry of the world - whether that is people struggling with housing insecurities or people who are being oppressed—that we need to respond in a personal way and not wait for institutions. It also points to the Ultimate Reality, a reality that personally loves us. As discussed in Adam's latest book, Let Your Heartbreak Be Your Guide: Lessons in Engaged Contemplation, he brings to question WHAT HAS FOLLOWING OUR BLISS resulted in? Instead FOLLOW OUR HEARTBREAK. Continuing to go deeper into this, they discuss the profound relationship between joy and suffering; not the kind of joy that encourages us to avoid life, but the kind of joy that can face the difficulties and the suffering and still survive. Allowing the pain of others to touch of deeply (this was also spoken about during Ilia Delio and Swami Padmanabha's conversation of Ilia's podcast, Hunger for Wholeness), gives the space for the spirit of god to flow thru us and leads us into a life of compassionate service. Approaching people in need as if they are a project to be solved was not working for Adam. He realized that he needed to show up for people as he shows up in prayer. Being receptive and breaking with people, accompanying them through their suffering reveals the healing presence. Both Adam and Swami share how their traditions speak of praying as not limited to one act, but that every action can be prayer. Action not just RELATED to contemplation, but action AS contemplation. The paradox of Individuation in Service: on one hand, the goal is to find your purpose and mission in life and on the other hand, becoming an empty vessel in which God can live. It is our conception of ourselves, even our specialness, that has to die and in the process we discover the most of ourselves we have ever been. Swami asks Adam to share his experience in transitioning from monastic life to married life for him and his wife, who was a Buddhist nun for 15 years. Adam shares his profound response about love, vows, and reflecting god's unconditional acceptance. and much much more… ▶ WATCH ON FACEBOOK ▶ WATCH ON YOUTUBE ▶ PURCHASE RADICAL PERSONALISM: Revival Manifesto for Proactive Devotion in hardcover, paperback, and/or Kindle formats on Amazon ▶ WRITE your REVIEW of RADICAL PERSONALISM ▶ CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION: Gaudiya Reform Forum on Facebook. ▶ FOR MORE INFO: SwamiPadmanabha.com

The familiar stories of the Book of Genesis affirm that God made the universe, planet earth, and you and me. However, various anomalies in the text clue us that we are not reading the original version of these stories. So what were the original narratives, and what did they say about who we are and where we all came from? What was the earlier story of human origins, almost obliterated from the Hebrew Scriptures in the 6th century BC, and suppressed from Christian writing in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD? And what does any of this have to do with Extra Terrestrials? Escaping from Eden will take you on a journey around the world and into the mythologies of ancient Sumeria, Mesoamerica, India, Africa, and Greece to reveal a profound secret, hidden in plain sight in the text of the Bible. Jeff Gorman is a songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, and bassist for the touring/recording rock duo Illiterate Light. He was raised in a conventional middle-class evangelical white suburban upbringing before studying history in college, being impacted to Shane Claiborne, and becoming a part of the New Monastic movement after graduating. He spent 2 years running an organic farm and living in social justice + eco-centric intentional Christian community in Harrisonburg VA, while also pursuing music regionally in various bands. At 25, he formed Illiterate Light (name comes from Wilco song - "Theologians") while he continued his commitment to community and farming. He then took a hiatus, joined the Living School with Fr. Richard Rohr, and started touring heavily. He describes his practice as a combination of Centering Prayer and Walking Meditations. He is interested in the role of music in regards to inner life, the enneagram, integral theory, integral art, and living contemplatively in a loud and noisy "career" path. Illiterate Light floats between pools of postmodern confusion and rivers of vibrant optimism, integrating both into their lives and music. The duo’s search for meaning and depth drives a hunger for experimentation, but their uniqueness is a result of limitation. Jeff Gorman elevates his gritty guitar melodies and honest lyricism by stomping out thunderous synth bass with his feet as Jake Cochran layers lush vocal harmony and explodes with body convulsing energy around his minimal standing drum kit. Formed in the summer of 2015, Illiterate Light’s three EP catalogue and high energy live shows have gained underground fan momentum through consistent touring of the East Coast and Southeast. Spanning the better part of a decade, the creative evolution between Gorman and Cochran is far from typical. Starting with a chance meeting as the rhythm section for a pop singer-songwriter, the duo has since run an organic farm in the Shenandoah Valley, toured the mid-Atlantic by bicycle in several acoustic bands, lived in small intentional communities, and pursued alternative education in permaculture and contemplation. Their eclectic background is mirrored in their sound and lyricism; from non-duality to social justice and millennial dating norms, nothing is off limits. Though shaped by the DIY music scene and friendly nature of their hometown, Harrisonburg VA, the duo has grown immensely through immersion in the thriving alternative scenes in both Richmond VA and Nashville TN. Gorman and Cochran’s incessant writing, commanding live performance, and constant touring promise a bright future as they work with producer Vance Powell (Jack White, The Raconteurs, Tinariwen, Chris Stapleton), a relationship that began after a string of energetic Nashville shows in the summer of 2017. Often drawing comparison to the likes of My Morning Jacket, Dr. Dog, and tUnE-yArDs, Illiterate Light is gearing up for a big 2018. Available on Spotify, iTunes, Apple music, illiteratelight.com, etc. The image is a preliminary attempt at mapping an integral/four quadrant approach of Illiterate Light's health and growth. If you don't have time now to listen to everything, feel free to skip ahead to where the meditation begins at 49:00 and then come back later for the conversation. Today we are joined by Shane Claiborne, an internationally-recognized author, speaker, and activist, and perhaps the leading western Christian voice for the New Monastic movement. While Shane does not identify as a libertarian, there are many aspects of his thinking which overlap with libertarianism. In this episode, we discuss capital punishment in Christian ethics. Libertarians are divided on the issue, as are Christians. How does capital punishment relate to state power and human rights? Why are there more minorities executed than white people? Most importantly, how does Christian theology inform our thinking on this matter? Shane offers his insights in this fascinating discussion. Hopefully the only thing that gets put to death in this episode is un-Christlike thinking.
