This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comLiz Wolfe, Reason writer/podcaster, joins Nancy and Sarah to talk about the mess of politics, the value of free speech, and how to talk about parenting in a world where fewer and fewer women are parents. Wolfe is not your average 28 year old: Unapologetically pro-life and pro-natalist as a time when many in her generation haven't even started contemplating freezing their eggs. Or, in the case of singer Chappell Roan, 27, they might tell an interviewer, “All of my friends who have kids are in hell. I actually don't know anyone who's happy and has children at this age.”Liz has thoughts! With her surfboard in the background and her toddler occasionally in her lap, Liz talks about choices, wonders, border chaos, her Catholic faith, reproductive tech, and why she's pleased that Grok compared her to Kat Timpf. Also discussed:* Happy Liberation Day?* Grok summarizes your narrators, and Sarah gets grumpy* Nancy's alter-ego has a pie in her backpack, with a gun* Truth Czar, Disinformation Chief … have the American people not suffered enough?* Sarah is pissed on Matt Taibbi's behalf* Talk to your hairdresser about the New York Times …* Warren Beatty quote: “One of the nice things God does is, he does not let people who don't have kids know what they're missing.”* Chappell Roan, a second-rate Lady Gaga* “Ambiguous loss”* Will Sarah have a kid on her own?* Do NOT call Nancy a single mother* Unrealistic expectations about our fertility window* “I bite Mama!”Plus, sliding out of Obama-era liberalism, the hazards of toxic empathy, poop under your fake nails, and much more!

Against The Grain // Living By Faith Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” John 3:8 (NIV)“The wind [Spirit] blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going.” Galatians 5:25 (ESV) “If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” Romans 4:17-22 (NIV)“As it is written: ‘I have made you a father of many nations.' He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not. Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.' Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah's womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” Stages of living by faith: 1. A word from God. Genesis 12:2 (NIV)“I will make you into a great nation…” 2. A decision to align your actions to what God has said. Genesis 12:4 (NIV)“So Abram went, as the Lord had told him” 3. Waiting period. Genesis 16:1 (NIV)“Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children…” 4. Circumstances start to affirm your doubts about what God said. Genesis 17:17-18 (NIV)“Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, ‘Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?' And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” 5. God will ask you to surrender the promise you now hold. Genesis 22:2 (NIV)"Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac— and…Sacrifice him" 6. God will prove himself as the provider and protector of his promise. Genesis 22:11-18 (NIV)“But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, ‘Abraham! Abraham!' ‘Here I am,' he replied. ‘Do not lay a hand on the boy,' he said. ‘Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.' Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, ‘I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.'” Romans 4:20-21 (NIV)“Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.”

Quiet Time Coaching Episode 462 | New Thing Series — Part 17 | “Abraham's laughter” | Malcolm Cox Introduction A new thing! I'm Malcolm Cox. Welcome to your daily devotional podcast anchored in Isaiah 43:19: 'See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.' We are currently looking at God doing a new thing in the life of Abraham. Today we explore Abraham's laughter. “God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”” (Genesis 17:15-17 NIV11) Why is he laughing? Was it a nervous laugh? Did he think God was joking? Was the laughter derisory? How did God feel about Abraham's laughter? We will never know the details, but we can be inspired by two things: 1. God didn't take it personally 2. Abraham was obedient despite his scepticism The numbers do not matter - Abraham was 99 years old - The promises are, on the face of it, ridiculous - nations and kings will come from Abraham “Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah's womb was also dead.” (Romans 4:19 NIV11) “And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.” (Hebrews 11:12 NIV11) For Reflection Abraham struggled to accept God's promise to of an unprecedented new thing — fathering a son at such an advanced age. Yet, he overcame his scepticism to trust God for something he could barely imagine, let alone see. Sometimes God does a new thing we can see coming. But sometimes he takes us on a bizarre adventure that, at the time, makes no sense. Is there something like that in your life right now? Something so odd, you cannot possibly see how God could bring good out of it? If so, you are in good company — Abraham's. Conclusion I hope you find your heart, your life, your congregation and your world inspired by God doing a new thing. Until tomorrow, take care, and God bless. Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Is it theological, technical, practical? Big Idea: What does obedience mean to you? Genesis 17: 15-27 1. A Promise: Mother of Nations. Genesis 17: 15-18 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” 2. A Promise: Isaac and Ishmael. Genesis 17: 19-22 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.” When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him. 3. Immediate Obedience. Genesis 17: 23-27 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him. Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised, and his son Ishmael was thirteen; Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day. And every male in Abraham's household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him. Next Steps: Believe: I surrender my all to the glory of God and in faith to King Jesus. Become: I will seek to understand and grow in God's promises and purposes for my life. Be Sent: I will live out obedience in my actions AND my words this week. Discussion Questions: Is obedience an act or a process? Explain your answer. Why do we naturally dislike obedience? Was there a time when being obedience cost you a friendship? Can you truly follow someone you don't trust? What helps you hold on to trust even when things look like they're getting worse? Was there a time when you were disobedient to the Holy Spirit? Pray for someone who is far from Christ today.

October 25, 2000. Indianapolis, IN. Two bodies were found in a dumpster near downtown Indianapolis. The police quickly identified the victims as Andrew Cataldi and Tricia Nordman. They just as quickly identified their killers as Richard Hull and Sarah Pender. Richard and Sarah were both sentenced to multiple decades in prison. Justice was served. However, as the years went on, new evidence revealed that Sarah was likely railroaded and multiple pieces of evidence from her trial were fabricated. Would her legal team be able to overturn her 110-year sentence? Abraham . . . laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” . . . Sarah laughed. . . . — Genesis 17:17; 18:12 Not all laughter is good medicine. There is a kind of laughter that mocks and wounds. It's the laughter of disdain and derision. Being laughed at is no fun. However, laughing alongside good friends can bring healing. This is a kind of joyful laughter that accompanies celebrations: the laughter of wonder, amusement, and amazement. On two different occasions, we read of laughter breaking out after God's announcement that a child would be born to aged Sarah and Abraham. In Genesis 17, we read that Abraham laughs, and in the next chapter Sarah laughs too. This was a laughter of astonishment and amazement mingled with a hint of disbelief. They weren't necessarily laughing at God, but more at a plan that seemed so implausible. God had been faithful to them, but they weren't quite sure they believed God would do the impossible. But then the child of promise was eventually born the next year, and they named him Isaac, meaning “laughter” (Genesis 21:1-7). Their laughter of doubt was transformed into a laughter of celebration and praise. Where do you see God at work in astonishing ways today? Consider how this can bring a sense of joy and celebration to people around you. God of amazing grace and joy, cast out our doubts and fears. Turn our mourning into dancing, our weeping into laughter. Help us to trust that you will make all things new. Amen.
Genesis 21 1 Now the Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” Hebrews 11 11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past child-bearing age, since she considered HIM faithful who had promised. Genesis 17 15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarah your wife…I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” 17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” Genesis 18 11 Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” 13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”

Genesis 17:9-11 ‘Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come by circumcising every male among you. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you...” ‘God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.' Genesis 17:15-16 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” He also said, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” “Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. As for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and he will greatly increase his numbers... But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.” Genesis 17-27

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comWhat up with the language police? Nancy and Sarah take on the one-percent who insist on scrubbing the mundane (“he,” “she,” “the”) and the arcane (“graybeard”?) from our mouths on the off-chance the words cause harm or feelings of exclusion. Language is shape-shifting, and good communication aims toward inclusion, but who does it help when we replace basic words with the un-fun, the opaque, and the workshopped? Sarah and Nancy may disagree on how to pronounce Latinx (“Lah-TEENix”? “LaTINKS”?) but agree with Substacker Rob Henderson when he writes that “only the affluent can afford to learn strange vocabulary, because ordinary people have real problems to worry about.” Speaking of language, New York Times Opinion writer and former head of the Times Book Review Pamela Paul revisits the novel American Dirt and its author Jeanine Cummins, both fed to the cultural appropriation fires of 2020. More than a hundred writers wrote an open letter denouncing Cummins to Oprah Winfrey (who'd made American Dirt an Oprah pick), and such campaigns have left publishers running in fear, but the public? They made the book a bestseller. Plus: Nancy and Sarah on deep-fried anything, the legacy of Tom Wolfe (the best American novelist on the subject of “status”) and some cracking 20th-C essays about the sexual revolution, a time when “finding yourself” left many people lost.In the bonus: Sarah takes us to MILF Manor, while Nancy talks about her mom and memory loss, wishing a pox on those who prey on the elderly. An update on journalist Felicia Sonmez, star of the 2022 melodrama, “As the Washington Post Turns.” Then it's into the hot boxes, of which Sarah's appears to be gushing lava, lots and lots of lava … And we tease our next guest. In this edition of the podcast, the girls/women kick off the discussion with reports on their respective special events; Sarah's Rights and Religions Forum conference in Washington, DC and Meghan's latest Unspeakeasy retreat in New York. Lamenting their ongoing habit of saying “I'm a liberal, but . . .” before talking about anything that might be construed as right wing, Sarah says the noticed the same tic in a book she's reading about the unintended consequences of the birth control pill. #NotThatWeDontSupportBirthControl. Will Sarah lean harder into gender tweets? Will Meghan give up her blue check?Sarah admits she wasted a car salesman's time by taking a Tesla out on a self-driving spin (unsurprising spoiler: the car can park better than she can). The hostesses then return to the evergreen subject of censorship, citing the resurfaced brouhaha over the forced departure of New York Times opinion editor James Bennet in 2020. Some who joined the pile-on are now apologizing, but is it too little too late? Meanwhile, they wonder if their own intense lack of censorship, especially around certain topics, is potentially an ineffective tool for change. Are they too obsessed to make a difference?
