Nothing could be further from the truth. The Buddha's teachings show us the way to fully embody this life. To be fully awake is to fully live! The Buddha did not teach vacancy; he taught people how to live without clinging. Joining us on the show this week is author, LMFT, and professor from Naropa University, Bruce Tift! Having been in private practice since 1979, Bruce has served thousands of clients on the path toward becoming more in touch with their immediate experience in an effort to have better relationships to themselves and others. As a practitioner of Vajrayana Buddhism for over 40 years, Bruce brings a unique perspective that combines Buddhist wisdom and the best that the Western Psychotherapeutic model has to offer. He's given presentations all around the world on this material and has released a book called ‘Already Free” Buddhism Meets Psychotherapy on the Path to Liberation'. In this conversation we talk about the merger of these two distinct and oftentimes contradictory paths of working with ourselves. Through that lens, we ask the question, what are our neuroses and is there really a problem with who I am today? The Science of Awakening Your Non-Self Take away: To embark on a journey of personal growth by continually questioning, learning, and striving to see beyond the surface-level illusions that constrain so many people's perceptions of what is possible. Money Learnings: Clement Decrop grew up where money came in the form of a reward system for doing well in school. His parents would give him 1 dollar to 5 dollars based on his grades on his report card - 5 dollars for an A, 4 dollars for a B, etc. Even though it wasn't a lot of money, it was motivating for him as a kid, as he could save up and buy things like $40 video games back then. This reward system taught him to value money from a young age and incentivized him to perform well academically. Bio: Clement Decrop is a master inventor with 50+ patents filed, public speaker, and author of "The Idea Space: Awakening Your Non-Self" Highlights from this episode: Exploring the concept of an "idea space" - a mental model for understanding the mind based on physics and general relativity. The importance of mindfulness practices like meditation and focusing on the breath to cultivate presence and gratitude. Strategies for letting go of attachments and reducing the intensity of negative emotions. The value of reading widely and exposing yourself to different perspectives to challenge your perception of reality. Techniques like negative visualization and "last time" meditation from Stoic philosophy to build resilience. Raising children with the right balance of struggle and support to instill grit and wisdom. Reframing societal norms and systems as "veils of illusion" can blind us from deeper truths about existence. Links: https://theideaspace.io/ Richer Soul Life Beyond Money. You got rich, now what? Non-self is a practice more than it is a philosophical viewpoint. However, this practice begins with a conceptual investigation of the presumed experiential manifestations of the constructed self. (February 16, 2024)

Effect on Emotions Mindfulness has helped me notice the half-life of my emotions and reduce them greatly. As soon as you notice emotion, you'll see it's half-life just whoop, shoot down. Something Sam Harris says. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is like the fuel to the function of your whole entire body. So James Nester wrote a great book called Breath: The New Science Of A Lost Art by James Nestor. So check that out if you haven't. But one of the key things for breathing is having a breath that you go to every day and Ocean Breath is my go-to. So Just put your hand in front of your face and you just try to fog it up like you would a glass. And now you do the same thing except with your mouth closed and you notice you get a lot deeper breath. And then maintain that breath five and a half seconds. Inhale five and a half seconds. Exhale Whenever you can. Suggested Resources Book: Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening by Joseph Goldstein Book: The Blue Cliff Record by Thomas Cleary Book: The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time by Stephen Hawking Book: The Illustrated Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking App: Waking Up (App by Sam Harris) Bullying Story Clement Decrop shared a personal experience from high school where witnessing bullying left a lasting impact on him. He regrets not taking action and believes that a deeper meditation and mindfulness practice could have empowered him to intervene. Also, Clement emphasizes the importance of teaching meditation to young people to encourage ego detachment. He explains that many instances of bullying stem from kids forming a strong sense of self, akin to developing an identity over time. Clement draws parallels to the concept of the “illusion of self” and the difficulty of defining oneself precisely. Meditation helps children detach from their egos, which can prevent hurtful words and actions. Clement Decrop advocates teaching mindfulness scientifically to help kids understand and reduce harm they may cause each other. Welcome to episode 52 of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. This time, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach and journalist Jo Confino are joined again by frequent podcast guest Sister True Dedication (Sister Hien Nghiem). Together, they respond to further questions from listeners in this second part of our first question and answer session of 2023.We hope that their answers will show how the teachings can help people who are in distress or are dealing with critical issues – but also simply how to find more joy in our lives. This installment's questions and answers cover topics ranging from how to create a practice with no sangha to how to develop a spiritual practice in busy, stressful lives; how to find meaningful communities and connections and become aware of our own story and that of our ancestors; understanding the complexity of ancestry and transmitted wisdom; belonging and home; intention and aspiration; the quality of presence; how to engage mindfully in a policing role; the difference between mindfulness and concentration; finding the sweetness of joy in life and making simple things your joy – and much more. To give a flavor of Plum Village Q and A sessions, the two monastics share memories including a story about Thay singing a song during a Q and A session for children. And what question do you think people should be asking? Or don’t ask enough? There's an answer to this one, too.Thank you for listening, and for sharing your deep questions! And nobody can take that away, besides our old excuses.” “At the beginning of my practice, I thought that mindfulness meant doing sitting meditation for 30 minutes every morning or having to do sacred reading or something, and having some kind of spiritual structure or program. And, actually, thanks to the five mindfulness trainings and coming on retreats here, I was like, ‘Oh, mindfulness is in three dimensions. Mindfulness is how I listen to my boss at work. Mindfulness is how I don’t get into arguments with my housemates.' And I started to realize this three- or four-dimensionality of mindfulness, which is about how I choose to spend my time.” “If we think of our separate selves as just our life and what we’ve experienced, that cuts off an enormous amount of intelligence, knowledge, and understanding that can help us to understand ourselves more deeply and to heal ourselves.” “Some of the themes we’ve been speaking about are also around despair, and in the Buddhist teachings, intention – what we’d call aspiration – is the antidote and the medicine for despair. And so, if we’re feeling dull in our life, it may be because we haven’t yet identified what we really want and aren't acting on it.” “We do not know how long we have. And if mindfulness can give us anything, it is awakening to what is most important to us.” “Mindfulness is mindfulness when it starts to generate more love and understanding.” “Mindfulness is not a pill, but it is a path.” “For us, mindfulness always contains within it love, understanding, and helping people to suffer less. But it also goes to the roots. And what’s happening now is that there are a lot of mindfulness products which are more about wellbeing and making you feel good. But for us, mindfulness does so much more. It gets to the root of our suffering so we can transform what is painful in our life, so we can generate more happiness in our life, so we can heal, sometimes healing things over many generations.” “It’s not that you can only be mindful in nature. So somehow challenging ourselves to see what is extraordinary about any moment in front of us, and to give ourselves space to enjoy those moments, can really bring back the sweetness.”

Reflection and Practice We have this assumption of a self at the center of our experiences: our thoughts, our emotions, our senses. While relatively true, dharma practice points to the underlying illusion of self. Notice how that sense of self arises in relation to the five aggregates. If you relax the activity of thinking and doing around the aggregates, is that sense of self still there? Can you actually locate it? The Five Aggregates: Form (body, etc.), Vedana (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral), Perception (labeling from past history), Volitional Impulses (thinking, emotions, actions), Consciousness (sensory field). This recording was edited and prepared for publication by volunteer Aruna Bala.
Dhamma talk by Ajahn Mudito on the 18 Sept 2022, at the Buddhist Society of Victoria (BSV). Bhante Mudito was born in a remote village in Northern-Finland. After completing military service, he travelled to the United States where he attended chef school and worked in a high-end hotel for a few years. While living in New York his long-time interest in Buddhism evolved as he started meditating with different groups. He sought after many teachers and found many of them to be too lofty or simply too boring. But then the stars aligned when Ajahn Brahm wrote his hit book Open the Door of your Heart and on the book promotion tour he came to New York where Mudito fell in love with Ajahn and his simple teachings. He has followed Ajahn Brahm ever since and in 2010 he went to stay in Bodhinyana and ordained as a monk in 2012.
