Tricycle Week: Sitting Still in a World That Won't Stop—Overcoming Discomfort in Meditation

Zen Commuter

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2025 13:29

Welcome to Zen Commuter and day five of Tricycle Week! Today, we're exploring a challenge many meditators face—the uneasy relationship with the timer. Whether it's impatience, restlessness, or the feeling that the minutes are stretching endlessly, the ticking clock can sometimes feel like an obstacle rather than a guide. But what if we could change our perspective and learn to sit with that discomfort? In this episode, we'll discuss how to become more comfortable with the timer in meditation and what it reveals about our minds. Plus, we'll feature a reading of I Think the Clock Is Broken by Christopher Rivas, offering insights into time, presence, and the art of letting go. Let's learn to embrace the practice—one moment at a time. Topics Covered: Persistent Time Anxiety During Meditation: Despite years of practice, Rivas often experiences a nagging suspicion that his meditation timer has malfunctioned, leading to an urge to check the clock. This recurring doubt underscores a common struggle with time perception during meditation. The Illusion of Control and Fear of Letting Go: Rivas identifies this anxiety as stemming from a deeper desire for control and a fear of uncertainty. He suggests that the discomfort with an indefinite meditation period reflects a broader discomfort with unpredictability in life. Societal Conditioning Linking Time to Productivity: He critiques societal norms that equate time with productivity, observing that this mindset can make stillness feel counterproductive. Rivas proposes that embracing meditation without strict time constraints can serve as an act of rebellion against this pervasive cultural narrative.    Meditation Coaching Schedule Time with Thom (Complimentary consultation)   THANKS FOR LISTENING! Is who we are shaped more by nature or nurture? It's a question science has grappled with for years. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers dive into their family histories to explore how the people and experiences that came before them continue to shape who they are today. Part 1: As a teenager, Mark Pagan worries that having an old dad is affecting his social development. Part 2: Curious about his DNA, Christopher Rivas takes his father on a journey to the Dominican Republic to learn about his family history. Mark Pagán is an award-winning producer, writer, and editor for non-fiction podcasts and film. He is the creator and host of the critically acclaimed show Other Men Need Help. His work has been featured on Latino USA, Radiotopia, On the Media, 99 Percent Invisible, Code Switch, among others. His films and performances have been shown at dozens of festivals and shows worldwide including Slamdance Film Festival, Maryland Film Festival, RISK!, The Moth, and Story Collider. Mark's work has been nominated for a Peabody, has made The Atlantic, The New York Times, The New Yorker annual “best of” lists, and has been recognized by Vulture, TIME Magazine, CBC, Los Angeles Review of Books, and The Financial Times. Before working in digital media, Mark was a teacher, social worker, comedian, part-time mascot, and bboy. He currently lives in NYC with his wife and an emo pit bull named Soca. Christopher Rivas is quickly becoming one of the most sought after multi-hyphenates as an actor, author, podcaster, and storyteller. His book Brown Enough, explores what it means to be Brown in a Black/white world. The book is part memoir and part social commentary. He also hosts two podcast series with SiriusXM's Stitcher: Brown Enough, which explores the parallel themes of this book through interview-style episodes; and Rubirosa, a 10-episode documentary-style investigation of Porfirio Rubirosa, a Dominican diplomat, race car driver, soldier and polo player who is believed to be the inspiration for the famous character ‘James Bond'. Wassup y'all - this is a little bonus in the feed today. I wanted to share that Brown Enough is officially out in paperback today! It now comes with and includes a study guide and the Enough Workbook  or as we call it - the field guide to enoughness. At a time when the stakes feel impossibly high, I'm reminded of the power of story to connect, heal, and inspire. My hope is that Brown Enough continues to be more than a book. I hope it becomes a tool, a mirror, a bridge—a way for us to see each other and ourselves more clearly. We need that clarity now more than ever.

Jordan shares his thoughts on dating with a disability (24:04), when it's ok to use the word “disability” (21:30) and distinguishing between ignorance and curiosity (31:38) provides a rich perspective that can help break down societal prejudices. About Jordan Walker Ross Jordan is an actor (THE CHOSEN), screenwriter and host of the podcast “What's Your Limp?” Jordan has Cerebral Palsy and Scoliosis and by the age of 7, he had already undergone half a dozen major surgeries, including a full spinal fusion, and had several near death experiences. He discovered his love for acting at the age of 6 and spent the vast majority of his career being told no and having casting directors, agents, directors, etc. telling him to “lose the limp”. However, it was that very limp - the things Jordan was most insecure about - that led him to his most fulfilling and successful role yet - playing Little James on The Chosen. Now, Jordan is determined to use his platform as an actor and his podcast, What's Your Limp?, to help others learn to love their own “limps” and to use them to their advantage, rather than perceiving them as flaws or weaknesses. Episode Description: Man Enough is proud to introduce Rubirosa, a podcast by Brown Enough host and Man Enough guest host, Christopher Rivas, in partnership with Stitcher.  Rubirosa is a documentary podcast produced by Stitcher and hosted by Christopher Rivas (Call Me Kat) in which Rivas explores the life of Porfirio Rubirosa, the man who inspired the character of James Bond. Besides being a Dominican diplomat, Porfirio was an international polo champion, a race-car driver, and a pilot. He was a renowned casanova, who was married five times to women including Barbara Hutton and Doris Duke. He spoke five languages and twice became the wealthiest man in the world. Rivas, a Dominican-American actor, author, and storyteller, not only offers a portrait of Porfirio's life but also investigates the whitewashing of Hollywood and considers how his childhood may have been different had more of his favorite movie heroes looked like him. The character and life of Rubirosa reveal so much about the dichotomy of masculinity across cultures and generations while Christopher Rivas and expert guests work to unravel the mysteries of a man that was so infatuating to the men and women of his time. We're sure you'll enjoy this episode as much as we did!   New episodes every Monday

At one point or another in all of our no-straight-path journeys, we are bound to face setbacks, but that doesn't mean we should give up on our dreams! To continue our celebration of the one-year anniversary of No Straight Path, I share some personal anecdotes from my journey thus far and tell the story of how one setback set me up for success. After encountering a major stumbling block in the Hubspot Creators Accelerator Program, I had to take my own advice: honor your feelings, put things in perspective, normalize the setback, and move forward. To take stock of my past accomplishments, I looked back at the first six months of the podcast and not only reinvigorated my passion for storytelling, connected more deeply with friends, and made new connections with guests but also started building a community of like-minded people whose values aligned with my own. I learned so much about self-affirmation, becoming my own best teammate, reframing my attitude, and reconnecting with my ‘why' for guests like Ros Gold-Onwude, Kristin Turner, and Christopher Rivas that I knew for sure that I was on the right path. In today's episode, I share some clips from those inspiring conversations, reflect on the five steps I took toward peace and clarity, and look back on some of the 33 lessons I learned in 33 years of life, plus so much more. One year and more than 50 episodes later, I'm still finding the silver linings in the pain points and I'm ready for the next chapter, so stay tuned!  No Straight Path's One-Year Anniversary We are celebrating one year of meaningful content, connection, and storytelling. Christopher Rivas sits down with Ruben to talk about the importance of showing yourself enough love so that you can take up space in this world, walk towards your dreams unapologetically, and live a life outside of the boxes society tries to put us in. He discusses how he became the successful author, podcaster, actor and storyteller he is today. It took Christopher some time to overcome the challenges he faced with his identity, and there were times that he molded himself into what others thought he should be. “At the end of the day i think we need to choose anything we're doing or someone's going to choose it for us.” - Christopher Rivas Christopher believes that choosing love does not mean always living in a fairytale. Despite doubts and challenges, Christopher never lets comparison to others or fear stop him from doing something, and he's open to changing every day. While he acknowledges that not everything he wants will come to him, he believes in staying resilient by keeping his heart open and remembering that he is enough as he is now. “You still have to learn to love yourself. No one can really teach you how to do it. You learn by seeing other people loving themselves. That's one of the things I'm doing with my son now. I cannot teach Remy how to love himself. I can show him how I love myself.” - Christopher Rivas Christopher reminds us that experiences, voices, and actions of all cultures matter. After several jobs like working as a personal trainer in Miami, studying theater in California, teaching hip-hop theater workshops overseas and returning to acting in Hollywood, he finally started disconnecting from the masks he was putting on to fit into the box Hollywood tried to put him in and embark on his own creative endeavors. In his debut book, Brown Enough, Christopher discusses more about what it means to occupy space in this world within a brown body. Despite society's binary construct, Christopher aims to normalize loving ourselves and believing we are always enough. Christopher Rivas is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after multi-hyphenates - an actor, author, podcaster, and storyteller to watch. His goal is to create art that facilitates spaces of belonging, and he is deeply motivated by his own experience of finding connection through art.  Chris believes that we are all creatives in one way or another, and shares his story of pursuing his dream. He also reveals a pivotal moment in his life where he realized that the character of James Bond is based on a Dominican man, opening up a world of opportunity in his mind through the power of representation. His experience of being told by a public speaker that his heritage left him out of the conversation about race ignited a fire within to pave the way for others like him through writing, and that is how his work Brown Enough was first conceived. In his podcast series, Rubirosa, Chris gets real about assimilation and code-switching, asking his parents significant questions about their experience and the decisions to follow. He highlights the power of sharing your story and asking bigger questions of your family as things change to facilitate freedom. He defines ‘Brown' as everything between Black and White, and finds meaning in the more expansive way of being in between. Today I'm in conversation with one of the most talented and brilliant storytellers that I've ever heard, Mr. Christopher Rivas. As many of you longtime listeners know, I used to produce these inspirational variety shows called The Shine between the years of 2014 and 2019, and we did them all over the world; Los Angeles, New York, and London. And that's where I first connected with Christopher because he opened the show for us a couple of times. He's also a podcaster, and his podcast is about as unique and specific as they come. It's called Ruby Rosa. And it's an episodic show that details the legend of Porer Rub Rosa, who is set to be the Dominican diplomat and Latin lover that author Ian Fleming, allegedly based his famous 007-character on, also known as Bond, James Bond. And ever since learning this profound information in college, Christopher, who's half Dominican and half Columbian, and who had been low-key obsessed with James Bond ever since he was a kid, had this full circle moment because he discovered that the coolest, baddest spy of all time was based on somebody from his same Dominican heritage. And this led Christopher to create a one-man show called the Real James Bond was Dominican. But that's not all, Christopher also became a daily meditator in a very funny way. He basically lied to an attractive woman that he was an avid meditator because she was a meditator, and he managed to hide the fact that he actually never meditated a day in his life long enough for her to become his girlfriend. So you can imagine his surprise when she gifted for his birthday with an airline flight to a 10-day silent meditation retreat. And while it was indeed a struggle ever since that silent retreat, Christopher actually did become a daily meditator. Later he wrote a New York Times editorial called. I broke up with her because she's white and that ended up going viral. And so in this conversation, Christopher and I talk about the art of code-switching, and he shares this game that he learned from his father when he was just a child to, uh, to size people up. We talk about what famous Dominican actor inspired Christopher to create his own one-man show based on James Bond.We talked about the African American author who inadvertently motivated Christopher to pursue his mission. Of going all in on his brownness and being brown enough and how he stumbled upon the obscure article about the Real James Bond. We talked about the logistics of how one creates a one-man show and when and why Christopher slept in his car for a period of time.We talked about why his friends called him the White girl Whisperer, and how he handled hate mail from his viral New York Times editorial. We talked about why everything is a story and what are the elements of a good story and how his podcast has evolved. And as usual, our conversation was jampacked with other awesome stories and insights, and I know you're gonna get a ton of inspiration from listening to it.So without further ado, I want to introduce you to the Rebel him. . So without further ado, I want to introduce you to the storyteller himself, Mr. Christopher Rivas.

Christopher Rivas is a multi-talented, multi-dimensional writer, speaker, and storyteller to name just a few of his skills. He's the author of the soon-to-be published book Brown Enough and creator of the Rubirosa podcast. His work encourages us to ask deeper questions about our culture, our histories, and our relationships to the people in our lives. Today, he's the first man I've had on the Embodied podcast in two years. Christopher and I talk about how we both relate to our Brownness, how whiteness and capitalism have, intentionally or not, separated us from aspects of our cultural heritage, and how storytelling can connect us with pieces of our history we feel removed from. Christopher shares story after story with us in this episode, from humorous anecdotes about a ridiculously placed shower to heartfelt recollections of how his work allowed his father to reflect on his own assimilation into white culture.  I hope this episode encourages you to keep digging into your own healing and your ancestral history, to keep reaching out with empathy and understanding to those around you, and to learn to build your own stories that can connect you with your own individual culture and your inner self. In episode 401 we discuss: [01:19] An introduction to Christopher and his work on storytelling [08:43] How Christopher's dating life helped him to reevaluate what he'd been taught about whiteness, beauty, and culture [13:02] Defining “body of culture” and how it affects Brown people [17:31] How Christopher's father and his assimilation into white culture influenced Christopher's work [21:22] The healing effect that Christopher's storytelling work has had on his father and his ability to connect to his original culture [27:38] The craziest story about LA and inappropriately installed showers from Christopher's book  [33:32] How learning a new language can be a deeply humbling and empathic experience [40:41] How Christopher views climate and infrastructure reform as an opportunity to express empathy and care for our neighbors [44:15] How Christopher discovered the real James Bond (he was Dominican) and why he became so determined to share this story with the rest of world [51:39] Why stories like Rubirosa offer everyone, regardless of their culture, an opportunity to challenge their heroes and ask better questions about their history [59:33] Why accepting your multidimensionality and rejecting the “boxes” society places us in can open you up to new realities For full show notes and resources, head to https://untameyourself.com/podcasts/401 If you're feeling it, subscribe to the show, and leave us a review wherever you listen from. This is an audio drama podcast episode about the making of a podcast episode: "Cedar Rapids" is based on the oral history of a family living in that Eastern Iowa city. The family arrived there in 2006, after escaping civil strife in Burundi in the mid-1990s, and then spending eleven years in a Tanzanian refugee camp. The play explores what happens when a privileged, well-intentioned podcast host appropriates and manipulates his guests' narratives in order to, in his mind, make a positive impact. Though food insecurity may seem incidental in this story, the play intends to subtly illuminate connections between immigration and food insecurity.  Featuring Dan Froot, Natalie Camunas, Christopher Rivas, and Donna Simone Johnson. This image of The Rim of The Wound came to me during a mediation. This time at home has been a time to really see myself and heal and not distract myself from that healing. As the piece says ‘Place me at the rim of the wound. The tender holy space. The space where it meets health and possibility and begins to heal. A trembling space that meets, sees, needs, and must bring everything into harmony: rock, story, myth, spirit, death, disease, fear, water, fire. Purifying and integrating itself with everything. Eventually becoming flesh, becoming one.' We are all - ALL - experiencing something completely unique and powerful and it is a vital time to reimagine what is healing and what is normal and how do we integrate as we move forth into a new world.” Christopher Rivas is a Rothschild Social Impact fellow. Christopher Rivas and I talk about the process of allow ourselves to feel. While it's amazing to scroll through a million positive and empowering memes, where is the room for the rest of it? The days that we feel like we need to be empathized with. Christopher wonders if, "we're drowning in positivity?" As we're writing down our goals for this new year, let's leave room to check in with ourselves.      Follow us on Instagram: @christopher_rivas @latinxontherise

This week I talked with Christopher Rivas about his obsession with storytelling, our shared distaste for social media in the context of it being more necessary than ever to curate a "personal brand," and why he stayed in Windsor Castle this summer.  The LA Times once wrote about Chris, "Christopher Rivas radiates a kind of organic manliness and decay; this confident joyfulness that says so much about the nature of war and the meaning of life. "  If that isn't badass, I don't know what is. Enjoy.
