In April of this year, the report, Bitter Legacy: State Impunity in the Northern Ireland Conflict, was published. Written by a panel of international human rights experts (The International Expert Panel on Impunity) convened by the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights at the request of the Committee on the Administration of Justice and the Pat Finucane Centre, the report documents “widespread, systematic and systemic” impunity for British state involvement in killings, torture and ill-treatment, and collusion. In this episode, Brian Dooley, Senior Advisor at Human Rights First and member of The International Expert Panel, joins Lauren Dempster and Kevin Hearty to discuss state violence in Northern Ireland, the report's development and findings, and the impact of the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023 on efforts to address the legacy of the past. You can access the report here: https://www.jus.uio.no/smr/english/about/id/docs/bitter-legacy-29-april-24.pdf Please note that this episode was recorded on 3rd July 2024, one day before the UK General Election in which the Government that introduced the ‘Legacy and Reconciliation' Act discussed in this episode lost power. The new Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has since provided an update to parliament on the new Government's approach to the Act: https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/northern-ireland-troubles-legacy-reconciliation-act-2023#:~:text=It%20underlines%20the%20Government's%20absolute,and%20of%20victims%20and%20survivors

English artist Amy Dury paints people by extracting figures from photographs from the pre-digital age found in family photographs or home movies. She is most often drawn to peoples' roles in society, the hierarchies and dynamics of power. Amy says: “Our history instructs, seduces and tethers us, and I look to use paint to examine these emotive memories, which reflect current themes and tensions in contemporary life.” Amy was born in London, England in 1971, one of four children, she has two brothers and a sister. Her mother Susan was a teacher and creative in textile art. Her father John worked in the City. Amy studied for her BA in Printmaking at Glasgow School of Art graduating in 1997 before earning an MA in Fine Art at the University of Brighton. Prior to moving to Scotland where she met her husband, Amy studied in Belfast during The Troubles - the Northern Ireland Conflict - which was an uneasy time with the constant threat of bombing. When the couple moved to Brighton, Amy pursued her love of art by teaching before focusing on her painting. Of her art, she says: “I like looking at historical, vintage imagery. I feel very connected but I didn't even live in those times and I don't know who they are. I feel very tender, very emotional… moved by their lives, especially when you watch them on home movies and you see them walking and talking and laughing. It's very moving and you feel reconnected and you feel part of the change of people, of society, of culture. When I make the paintings I feel like I'm connecting with that and I'm reaching something about my own experience now or the current experience through looking back into the past.” Amy divides her time as Head of Art at a Sixth Form College in Brighton and painting in her home studio. She is married to Peter, an artist and architect, whose father was a Scottish landscape artist. The couple have two children and live in Brighton. Joining me on this week’s Power Done Differently is Naomi Smith, CEO of the pro-Europe campaign group Best for Britain, and co-host of one of my favourite podcasts, ‎OH GOD, WHAT NOW? Naomi has been up close on some of the most significant political failures in the UK over the last decade. She was one of the few who predicted that the last election would end badly for Remainers, but when she tried to warn them, she was shouted down by MPs. So of course we talk about Brexit, the Labour Party and the Lib Dem's, but we also talk about so much more. Naomi gets candid about growing up in Northern Ireland during the troubles, what that can teach us about a post Brexit/Trump world, and how the racial harassment of a classmate by a teacher exposed her to how power can corrupt, and how abusers will use that power. We explore the role big tech has in the radicalisation of young men and in directing violence towards women, alongside why most politicians don’t have the real life experience to be good leaders. While Naomi claims she has no interest in running for office again, I can’t help but feel politics would be all the better for having more women like Naomi Smith in power. Aired 08/08/11 KILL THE MESSENGER emerged from MARIA ARMOUDIAN's studies into the causes of genocide, war, peacemaking, democratization, and the protection of human rights and the environment, while she was working on her Ph.D. at the University of Southern California, as well as during her work as a broadcast journalist and public official. Looking across conflicts and policy successes and failures, she found that media (and media professionals) were among key factors in determining political outcomes, including matters of life and death. Written in five parts, KILL THE MESSENGER shows how media fomented rage and genocide in Rwanda, the Holocaust and the Bosnian war; how they helped bring peace in the Northern Ireland Conflict and the war in Burundi; how media contributed to democratization and the protection of human rights in South Africa, Taiwan, Mexico, and Senegal, and how they aided both the destruction and rebuilding of democracy in Chile. In its final case study, Kill the Messenger explores the media's role in the fate of the world, as journalists disentangle the issue of climate change for the public. The book's forward was written by Tom Hayden.
