Talk of possible reforms to the Stormont institutions has been growing recently, spurred by concerns about repeated institutional collapses, perceived inequities between different parts of society, and criticisms of the institutions' record in governance. But what options for reform are there, and what impacts might these have if implemented? A newly published report from the Constitution Unit at University College London addresses these questions. It does not draw conclusions, but aims to promote wider, more coherent and better-informed debate. This public event, hosted in collaboration with the Democracy Unit at Queen's University Belfast, offered an occasion for such debate. The report's authors were joined by leading experts to explore the ideas and possible ways forward.Speakers:Professor Katy Hayward – Professor of Political Sociology, Queen's University BelfastProfessor Alan Renwick – Deputy Director of the Constitution UnitAnn Watt – Director of PivotalAlan Whysall, Honorary Senior Research Associate at the Constitution UnitChair: Professor John Garry, Director of the Democracy Unit, Queen's University BelfastRead the report  Links:Website: www.ucl.ac.uk/constitution-unitMailing list: www.ucl.ac.uk/constitution-unit/get-involved/mailing-listBlog: constitution-unit.com

How Northern Ireland can be a Good News Story for the Three New Governments

Although 2024 will be remembered as a year of political and electoral tumult worldwide, the situation in Northern Ireland has been relatively stable. The Executive and Assembly have been functioning since the Safeguarding the Union Deal (31 January) and its draft Programme for Government is intended to do ‘what matters most'. This rather unfamiliar situation must come as a considerable relief to those who consider themselves co-guarantors of the 1998 Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, none of whom can expect much domestic or international stability in the near future. Northern Ireland is ripe for good things to grow, but this won't happen without some cultivation. Drawing on evidence and analysis from political sociology, in her address to the IIEA, Professor Hayward identifies the conditions that will make for belated but healthy progress in Northern Ireland society and the ways in which Ireland, the UK, and the USA – not to mention the ever-important EU – can help nurture them.  About the Speaker: Katy Hayward MRIA FAcSS is Professor of Political Sociology at Queen's University Belfast. She is an Eisenhower Fellow and was a Europe's Futures Fellow (ERSTE/IWM) in 2023/24. Professor Hayward was also recipient of a special Ewart-Biggs Memorial Prize and ‘Political Communicator of the Year' award for her work on the impact of Brexit on Ireland/Northern Ireland, and is a trusted expert for media, policy, civic, and academic audiences worldwide. Her latest publications include the co-authored book Northern Ireland a Generation after Good Friday (2021).

The titans of capital aren't just the obscenely wealthy. They are the directors of transnational finance companies; they manage the money of the obscenely wealthy.Steve's guest, political sociologist Peter Phillips, is the author of Titans of Capital: How Concentrated Wealth Threatens Humanity. The titans, he says, have doubled their AUM (assets under management) in the past 5 years.“There's only 117 of them and they manage $50 trillion of capital. That $50 trillion is the core –– almost half of the free-floating capital in the world. And that is what the US calls a vital interest. So, when the US says we have vital interests in the world, that's what they mean.“And that's why we have military bases everywhere in the world, because these investors are everywhere. And any rivalries are undermined by our intelligence agencies, by the government, by military whenever possible. So, it just happens that governments work on behalf of capital.”So, if you're wondering why the US has military interests in Ukraine or Gaza. Look to the titans, whose firms are investing in the defense industry. They profit off of warWhile the titans are massively increasing the wealth of the top .05 percent of the world's population, over 20,000 people die each day from starvation and easily curable diseases. While the ruling class and their media mouthpieces insist that capitalism is going to save the world and money will trickle down...“It's not. It's exactly the opposite. People are dying daily. There are 700 million people who live in extreme poverty in the world. And extreme poverty means you're living on $2.15 a day. That's the UN set level for extreme poverty.Steve and Peter discuss ways in which the titans are able to bend policy to their own purposes. They mention the role of groups like the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations. The episode also compares the approaches of the US and China, illustrating China's success in alleviating extreme poverty through state-driven economic strategies and how the US tries to spin China as a threat.Steve and Peter talk about the need for revolutionary social movements to challenge the entrenched capitalist structures and demand wealth redistribution, using the insights of MMT to spur new thinking about alternative economic possibilities.Peter Phillips is a Professor of Political Sociology at Sonoma State University since 1994, former Director of Project Censored 1996 to 2010 and President of Media Freedom Foundation 2003 to 2017.

According to the Californian political sociologist Peter Phillips, American capitalism is facing an existential crisis. In his new book, Titans of Capital, he argues that the concentrated wealth of investment companies like BlackRock and Fidelity not only threatens human rights and democracy, but also the future of planet. Perhaps. But where Phillips really goes out on a limb is to argue that the Chinese state controlled model of capitalism which, he says, has brought hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, is more humane than the free market American model. Seriously?Peter Phillips is a Professor of Political Sociology at Sonoma State University since 1994, former Director of Project Censored 1996 to 2010 and President of Media Freedom Foundation 2003 to 2017. He has been editor or co-editor of fourteen editions of Censored, co-editor with Dennis Loo of Impeach the President: The Case Against Bush and Cheney (2006), editor of two editions of Progressive Guide to Alternative Media and Activism (1999 & 2004). His most recent book is Giants: The Global Power Elite. He was a co-host of the weekly Project Censored show on Pacifica Radio with Mickey Huff from 2010 to 2017, originating from KPFA in Berkeley and airing on forty stations nationwide. He teaches courses in Political Sociology, Sociology of Power, Sociological of Media, Sociology of Conspiracies and Investigative Sociology. Lama Rod Owens is one of a new generation of Buddhist teachers centred on living in a just way, with a focus on social change, identity and spiritual wellness - with many of his practises taking place online. He's currently on tour in the UK and joins us to discuss how his Methodist upbringing in America's South has helped form his unique practise of Tibetan Buddhism. The government announced this week that it was consulting on whether to lift current rules that mean faith schools can only offer up to 50 percent of their places to pupils on the basis of religious belief. The Catholic Education Service has been lobbying for over a decade and claims it's previously held back from opening schools because of the restrictions. Sir Edward Leigh MP, Conservative MP and former President of the Catholic Union, and Dr Ruth Wareham, Lecturer in Philosophy of Education at the University of Birmingham, discuss whether we're likely to soon see more Catholic free schools being established, whether lifting the rules will increase divisions in society, and if high performing faith schools are the result of them being more socially selective.Presenter: Edward Stourton Producers: Alexa Good & Rosie Dawson Production Coordinator: David Baguley Editor: Tim Pemberton

Why is there a stronger affinity for the AfD among Russian Germans and to what extent has the party affiliation of Turkish-German voters changed in recent years? Moreover, we discussed whether parties are increasingly trying to appeal to migrant voters, what kind of information environment these voters find themselves in and what the methodological difficulties are in studying their political preferences. THE PASSPORT: Laurie Taylor explores the cultural history of an indispensable document which has given citizens a license to travel and helped to define the modern world. Patrick Bixby, Professor of English at Arizona State University, delves into the evolution of the passport through the tales of historical figures, celebrities, artists, and writers, from Frederick Douglas to Hannah Arendt. How has the passport become both an instrument of personal freedom as well as a tool of government surveillance? They're joined by Kristin Surak , Associate Professor of Political Sociology at the LSE and author of a new study which investigates the routes taken by wealthy elites in pursuit of a ‘golden passport'. Through six years of fieldwork on four continents, she discovered how the sale of passports has transformed into a full-blown citizenship industry that thrives on global inequalities.Producer: Jayne Egerton

Twenty-five years after the Good Friday Agreement brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, this episode sees Ivan Vejvoda engage in an enlightening conversation with Queen's University Belfast's Katy Hayward as they examine the fragile stability and uncertain future status of the region in the wake of Brexit's destabilizing impact. Hayward provides insight into Northern Ireland's changing demographics, the sporadic functioning of the power-sharing government, declining trust between communities, the rise of hardline parties over moderates, the passionate commitment yet precarious position of civil society groups devoted to reconciliation and offering support to the vulnerable - as well as the critical need to restore robust democratic institutions and processes. While cautious about predicting violence, Hayward makes a compelling case that the current political vacuum threatens hard-won progress as the region's unresolved tensions continue to simmer.2023/24 Europe's Futures Fellow Katy Hayward is a distinguished Professor of Political Sociology at Queen's University Belfast, where she also directs the Centre for International Borders Research. Sind Aussagen glaubwürdig, für Sie von Relevanz? Als Einstieg in die erste Frage, stelle ich die Normen oder Prinzipien vor, die Robert Merton im Jahr 1942 vorgeschlagen hat: Gemeinschaftlichkeit (Communism/Communality) Universalismus (Universalism) Uneigennützigkeit (Disinterestedness) Organisierte Skepsis (Organized skepticism). Peter Phillips, a Professor Emeritus of Political Sociology at Sonoma State University and former Director of Project Censored (1996 to 2010), discusses his book, Giants: The Global Power Elite (2018), that focuses upon the concentration of wealth internationally whereby corporations and giant investment firms—multi-trillion dollar investment companies—have the money and power to restrict the parameters of what is possible for legacy news to cover. Elaborating how news is framed by the one-half of one per cent of the world's population, Phillips notes how those who invest in big media (Comcast, Disney, Time Warner, 21st Century Fox, Bertelsmann, and Viacom/CBS) further protect their profits—to include these same shareholders' investments in war—whereby news stories are modelled around the narrow parameters of these investors' financial interests. Philipps considers the repression of news today by the collaborative efforts of intelligence agencies working to protect and expand capital (eg. governments' “vital interests”) along with the military and political elite within every country. In this way, capital investments are shared among an international gobal elite whereby large companies like Hearst and The New York Times are primarily interested in protecting wealth as they hire public relations firms and adverising agencies—to include the Omnicom Group, WPP, and Interpublic Group—to package and release news whereby “managed news stories that are preempting objective new coverage.” Get full access to Savage Minds at savageminds.substack.com/subscribe

On one level there is a resurgent triumphalism in the West, and on another there are a deep series of crises both in Washington and of the globalized order. We see a rise of the Global South and "in-system powers"which are not part of the West. He discusses the consensus building project of the core elites and knowledge network or "empire of the mind," the U.S.-China relationship, how U.S. Empire has viewed China as a great asset to the Western world since the 1950s and how Beijing has emerged as a major power under the auspices of the West. Mickey is joined for the hour by former co-host Peter Phillips and University of California, Santa Barbara sociologist William I. Robinson. They discuss Robinson's new book "Global Civil War: Capitalism Post Pandemic” out from PM Press. Robinson says that the many types of digital technologies created, enhanced or expanded in recent years have changed the nature of world capitalism, and that -- with the advent of the coronavirus pandemic -- the capitalist class has hastened to deploy these new tools to control populations, with the aim of suppressing the peoples' uprisings that have been growing in extent and scale for more than a decade. Phillips and Robinson offer ideas about what sort of popular movement will be needed to confront this new variant of predatory capitalism. Notes: William I. Robinson teaches Sociology, Global Studies, and Latin American Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara campus. His previous books include Global Capitalism and the Crisis of Humanity and The Global Police State. Peter Phillips is Professor of Political Sociology at Sonoma State University. He's also a former director of Project Censored, and the cofounder of the Project Censored Show. His most recent book is Giants: the Global Power Elite. What are the origins of the term OkBoomer? Does this generational outcry stem from a reality in which discourse is controlled by youth due to the prevalence of social media, or is there a materialist socio economic basis to this framing that attempts to lay generational blame for our current reality on a certain cohort? Are there any political utilities to using generational analysis to shape political forecasting? What can we learn from such discourse? Should it be abandoned?   Jason Mueller Global Political Economy; Cultural Political Economy, Development, Political Sociology, Social Theory, Natural Resource Extraction, Post-Colonial Africa, Comparative & Historical Methods   About TIR Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. The social media hive mind is as fast as it is vicious. Say or do something triggering and you could find yourself going viral and getting canceled online. “The common definition of cancel culture is that it's a form of public shaming. Sociologically, it's society's way of regulating itself. When we cancel somebody, you're making a moral judgment,” says Nicole C. Curato, a Professor of Political Sociology at Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance at the University of Canberra. “The key to understanding cancel culture is that there's an element of unmet expectation.” In this B-Side episode, Ms. Curato tells former BusinessWorld reporter Marielle C. Lucenio what it means to get canceled and whether businesses should risk taking a political stand knowing that they could face backlash. Nina Ellaine Dizon-Cabrera, founder and chief executive officer of Colourette Cosmetics, also shares what it was like when Twitter tried to cancel her in November 2020, after she used the hashtag #NasaanAngPangulo. Recorded remotely in February 2022. Produced by Earl R. Lagundino and Sam L. Marcelo.

The future of the protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland remains uncertain, a year after it came fully into force. The arrangements continue to be a major source of tension in the post-Brexit UK-EU relationship and within Northern Ireland, with the first minister citing the DUP's objections to the protocol for his recent resignation. The ongoing uncertainty around the protocol is having a real impact on business and society. And with the May 2022 elections to the Northern Ireland assembly approaching and a question mark over Stormont's future, the UK and the EU are under pressure to reach agreement on the future of the protocol. What lessons are there from the protocol's first year? Why does the protocol continue to be a source of tension in the UK-EU relationship and such a divisive issue in Northern Ireland? Are attitudes changing? Where are the sticking points, and where is the protocol working well? What challenges are coming down the track and where can compromise be found? Set against the results of new polling from Queen's University Belfast, this event explored what people in Northern Ireland think of the protocol, the challenges that the UK and the EU face in managing the protocol and its consequences in the long term, and how people from Northern Ireland can be involved in the effective governance of the protocol's implementation. Panel: Professor Katy Hayward, Professor of Political Sociology, Queen's University Belfast and Senior Fellow at UK in a Changing Europe Professor David Phinnemore, Professor of European Politics at Queen's University Belfast Raoul Ruparel, former Special Adviser to Theresa May on Europe Jess Sargeant, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Government This event was chaired by Jill Rutter, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Government. #IfGBrexit We would like to thank Queen's University Belfast and the Economic and Social Research Council for kindly supporting this event.

Evolutions in experimentation, social impacts, and prefigurative practice in the blockchain and DAO space." He also has a Medium profile where he expands on different ideas he wrote about in his thesis. During the interview we talk about what got him interested in blockchain from a sociological point of view, the major ideological camps in the space, and how he was influenced by some of Marx's work for writing his thesis. He also gave us a run down of some of the projects he's working on including Commons Stack, the Token Engineering Commons, Don't Buy Meme, and Keep Network. Note that this was an especially long interview, so next week I will not be publishing a podcast episode to give myself some time to a few other things I've been needing to do.SourcesToward a Political Sociology of Blockchain — an Introduction Blockchain and the Future of Work by Kris JonesPrefigurative Practice, Politics, and the State  by Kris JonesMy interview with Jeff Emmett from Commons StackBreadchain Coop LinksReddit AnnouncementTwitter AccountNewsletterIf you liked the podcast be sure to give it a review on your preferred podcast platform.
