Serving almost 2 decades between them as Royal Marine Commandos, John & Ian left the forces and went looking for adventure. 'Summit To Sea' became their mission, a 5 stage journey across South America starting at Ecuador's highest mountain, and the highest point on earth, Chimborazo. Widely regarded as the source of the Amazon River, the team summited the mountain, and began the next stages of the journey, aiming to travel over 5000km along the Amazon. After conducting scientific research work in Iquitos, John & Ian continued on their way down the river, but it was not smooth sailing... After being kidnapped twice previously, passing a pirate encampment on the riverbank launched a series of events that would lead to the pair being attacked & shot multiple times by pirates, and would see the activation of their SOS buttons and a military response to rescue them. This week Justin sits down with Dr. Paul Winter. Paul is an independent historian, an author who specializes in wartime intelligence and military history, and a Red Team consultant. He's published articles in several journals and has written two books about World War II called D Day Documents and Defeating Hitler, as well as a third book called First In, Last Out, The Post War Organization, Employment, and Training of Royal Marines Commandos. He has also been an affiliated academic with the British Royal Marines, assisting with professional military education and officer career development, and was a member of the Land and Littoral Strike Team at the Maritime Warfare Center in Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. Today, Paul discuses a subject he has previously taught a course on: the Cambridge Five, arguably the most famous spiring of the Cold War. This is something that I haven't mastered yet, either. I'm still reminding myself on a daily basis that I need to breathe and process things slowly. Thoughts On Breathing Wim Hof. Style of breathing is one method of breathing. It's actually quite fast. And it brings you into a certain state. But there are thousands of different ways to breathe. Wim Hof has one. I prefer to slow breathe. And it would be a deep inhalation through the nose only. Then it would be a long, slow exhalation. And if you're listening to this right now and you've never really focused on your breathing before, I urge you to do 10 breaths like this. In through the nose. Full deep breath. Hold at the top for two to three seconds. And then let it out slowly. And your goal is to try and exhale for 10 seconds. If you do this, not even 10 times, if you do this five times, you're going to be in a completely different state. And that has helped me massively over the years. And another method is box breathing. I'm sure you're familiar with three seconds inhalation, three seconds hold, three seconds exhalation, three seconds hold. Again, do that. I think with box breathing, you need a bit longer to feel the effects. But you will. Your mind will slow down. You'll feel good, and you'll be able to think more clearly about the situation rather than just be wrapped up in the emotions of it. Bullying Story I've been bullied before, but at the age that it happened, I wouldn't have been able to have told you what mindfulness was. I believe that a lot of the things they teach you in school are actually very irrelevant to life. So if I had been mindful at the time and I had more awareness, they wouldn't have bothered me so much. I wish they had taught things in school that were more usable in life, like mindfulness. And other things like how to manage finances, how to think positively, how to have goals, and how to meditate. Also, how to breathe properly. Nobody taught me how to breathe. The first time I did a breathing session with someone, I realized this was so powerful. For sure I would have gotten through the situation if I'd known how to breathe and be a little bit more mindful, Suggested Resources Book: The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman Related Episodes Live As A Courageous Human; Clint Hatton Allan Misner: Keep Balance To Find Encouragement and Enlightenment Dr. Kim D'Eramo: Dynamic Doctor Encourages Mindfulness for Mind Body Health Are you experiencing anxiety & stress? Rob Metcalfe's guiding principle is that leadership is not just an individual pastime; rather it needs to be embedded at all levels within and across organisations so those closest to the need can meet it in an aligned and autonomous way. This belief stems from his career in the military where alignment between Headquarters, Operations Rooms and the person on the ground is so vital, whether on conventional or alternate activities. The strength of this belief was forged in both peacetime activities and operational theatres that included the Falklands War and various roles in Northern Ireland.Since then, he has dedicated his career to enabling leadership at every level through consulting, facilitation, training and coaching. He encourages people to think and respond through the lens of self, others and the system, proactively and consciously choosing where their focus should be. This is achieved by creating clear goals alongside simple habits and routines that enable consistency between a person, team or organisation's inner and outer games. This experience includes 14 years as CEO of LIW, expanding the organisation from start up to global leadership consultancy, preceded by 14 years as an officer in the Royal Marines Commandos. More recently he spent 3 years as a Partner with Denali Venture Partners and he now operates as an associate and investor to his previous organisations, as well as an independent consultant to a small number of other purposeful organisations across sectors and throughout the world. He is motivated by organisations that have a positive impact and has recently concentrated on working with the UN World Food Program across Africa and the Middle East including working with leadership teams and operational leaders in Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, Syria and Somalia. He also works with the Kids Cancer Project in Australia who are dedicated to saving childrens' lives though investment in cancer research.Rob and his team held the world building abseil record in 1992 for scaling to, and abseiling from, the upper deck of the CN Tower in Toronto, alongside a team from the Canadian School of Rescue Training. He was also “Mentioned in Dispatches” during his service, acknowledging that this was due to the efforts of the leaders and the people he had the good fortune to command.Rob sees how neuroscience is proving what was previously only a belief about good leadership practice. Many of his top tips are based on this truth. His top tip for your reflection is to “do whatever you want but know what you are doing”. He picked this quote up from someone else and has since observed that it is often not the case! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this interview, I speak with Pasha Munro about succeeding through failure in life. Pasha has served 27 years in the Royal Marines Commandos, in which time he trained as an Arctic, Mountain, Jungle, and Survival expert. The last 13 years of his spent as a Specialist Diver within the Special Boat Service/SBS. Pasha has had to learn how to put his body through massive amounts of physical exertion whilst maintaining a calm exterior. He has also had to master some of the most challenging diving in the world, and some of the world's most complex and covert diving. He has had to master the re-breather diving set; a closed circuit, pure oxygen device that doesn't give off bubbles to perform covert missions. He finished his last 5 years as a pilot of the Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (SDV) which is used for discreet underwater operations. In this interview, we will be discussing how he has navigated this complex environment. How he has used discipline as his ally and how Pasha has succeeded through failure and harnessed the failure for good. We will also discuss how he gets the best out of others as a personal trainer and coach. Other aspects we discuss include; how Pasha progressed through the military despite failure, domains of practice including polar, jungle, and desert environments, and the unifying principles in these extremes. We examine Pasha's focus and drive, his mindset around failure, and some of his diving recollections. To get in touch with Pasha around personal training or further contact please find the link here: https://www.facebook.com/PashaMunroPersonalTrainer/ Please enjoy this episode with an engaging and inspiring guest.

They explain how in recent years they've taken up extreme endurance Kayak events, crossing hundreds of miles of water without sleep, conquering the mental aspect of such challenges, and finding peace in such solitary pursuitsWe also dive into their most recent expedition, where they rowed the entire Atlantic Ocean as part of a 4 man crew in a boat no bigger than the average van - in a ruthless crossing that took 7 weeks. Rowing through 20-meter seas, having whales & sharks follow them for days & battling hallucinations after losing connection to their Spotify account! The anecdotes shared here about the row, and eventual arrival in Barbados where they finished the crossing, will have many listeners questioning the way they look at much less serious situations...I think this will be a fascinating insight into an entirely different way of living and looking at the world. Coming from a Rowing background myself, I've always had an admiration for such grueling tests of fitness & mind, and there are many lessons that can be taken here and applied to any area of life - those who truly want to win or get something done will do anything to get there, no matter what - enjoy the episode!_____________________Connect here - email - matt@midnight.cohttps://www.midnight.cohttps://www.instagram.com/matthuciushttps://twitter.com/matthuciusOld Vlog Channel - https://www.youtube.com/c/MatthewKellyonlineNatasha's links here -https://www.instagram.com/natasha.vilasecaListen to the podcast on Spotify here - https://open.spotify.com/show/06udMb2kDgv1mL40gxOSlK?si=fkXLx0A8S-O7OdukQUjSCA&dl_branch=1Listen on Apple podcasts here - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/midnight-podcast/id1585632377 Hosted on Acast. As a youth in Canada, Joshua Pelland was a typical rebellious child who didn’t seem to fit in. He found himself through the many adventures he had. His most challenging is one he still works to conquer today – embracing the adversity and building the resilience necessary to not only survive but thrive after a spinal cord injury almost cut his life short. Listen how he shares his experiences, what he learned about himself and how he cultivates the mindset of resilience, teamwork and leadership. His story will definitely leave you feeling motivated and inspired to succeed. Guest: Who is Joshua Pelland? Prior to his injury, Joshua was quite adventurous. He was almost killed at the age of 16 when he made his first bribe while traveling and climbing through East Africa. His eyes were truly opened as he witnessed the complexities of humanity and culture for the first time. Fast forward to find that Joshua has joined Britain’s elite Royal Marines Commandos and Special Operations Units where he encountered a wide variety of military operations and training. Leaving this life, Joshua delved into the private security sector working as an advisor for the Maritime companies at the height of the Somali piracy. Faced with dynamic challenges which he continually improvised, adapted to and overcame, he worked in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Joshua still yearned for new adventures. He found he had a passion for climbing pillars of ice, rock and mountains and that was just what he did until a fateful day in June of 2016.
Chris Thrall, at aged eighteen, joined the Royal Marines Commandos. Following active service in the Northern Ireland Conflict and training in Arctic warfare and survival, he earned his parachutist's ‘wings' and operated as part of a high-security detachment on board an aircraft carrier. In 1995, Chris moved to Hong Kong to oversee the Asia-Pacific expansion of a million-dollar marketing operation he'd built part-time while serving in the forces. Six months later, he was homeless, in psychosis from crystal meth addiction and working as a nightclub doorman for the 14K, Hong Kong's most ruthless triad brotherhood, many of who were assassins. In 2011, Chris wrote the internationally bestselling memoir Eating Smoke, a frank, disturbing yet often hilarious account of his experience. He has spoken on numerous podcasts, radio and television programs and has co-produced two award-wining radio plays on his life and memoir. Forty Nights, Chris's 2019 follow-up, details how he used chronic addiction as a springboard to achieve all of his life's goals. Today on The Best Version Of You Chris tells us how he's now a qualified pilot and skydiver, snowboarder and ultra-runner, Chris has travelled across eighty countries on seven continents, including backpacking through all of North, Central and South America. He also ran an ultra-marathon every day for 37 days, 999 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End, solo, unsupported and carrying 14kgs of camping equipment, to raise awareness of veterans' suicide. For his humanitarian approach to life, Chris was awarded the Second Level Commendation of the Finnish Nation on the grounds of human generosity. He has a degree in youth and community work, is a substance-misuse and addiction specialist and now, a life-changing speaker! Tell me a little about yourself and what did you do in the military? What was your trade? How long have you served? I spent my childhood and teens playing in the great outdoors with maps, compasses, traps, dens, and fires. I always had a burning desire to play soldier, like my grandfather who was a Commando during WWII. He led a troop of Commandos onto the beaches of Normandy and wrote a book about it – Swiftly They Struck. The war kicked off in Afghanistan in 2003, and I wanted to be a part of it. Not for the sake of Queen and country, I just really wanted to be a professional soldier and go to war. I joined the beloved Royal Marines Commandos in 2005 at the grand old age of 26, after being a nightclub manager in Bristol. I look back on the nine months of basic Commando training with only happy memories. I was very well prepared and loved it, mostly. After receiving my green beret, I was drafted to 42 Commando, which is where I managed to remain for the rest of my career, luckily. 42 Commando is one of the three main fighting units within the Corps. To ensure involvement in the action, I joined the heavy weapons branch, who were always in the thick of it. I specialized in machine guns, missiles, and pistols. I completed two, seven-month frontline tours of duty in Afghanistan, both of which were very lively. Luckily these were before the Taliban fully realized the effectiveness of planting improvised explosive devices everywhere. The vast majority of combat consisted of good old-fashioned firefights, which is the Royal Marines’ bread and butter, so we wiped the floor with them. My weapon of choice was the general purpose machine gun: A little slow to maneuver in close quarters but with slick drills, it’s highly effective at winning firefights. The two tours included over 14 air assault operations, which involved being dropped by Chinook into bandit country and left there to fend for ourselves for anything from two days to four weeks. The tours also included several long-range vehicle born operations, dug-in defensive operations, observation, and reconnaissance operations and being bombed more times than I care to remember by rockets and mortars. There’s nothing like a cigarette during a mortar attack! My action-packed career in the Corps ended after just six years when I met my soon-to-be-wife, Casey, while on holiday in NYC. What was the hardest time of your life? What tools did you use to get through it? The hardest time of my life was settling into civilian life - trying to build a business as a personal trainer in central London. The first year after leaving the Corps was my hardest working year. I look back on it and just see darkness, anger, and anxiety. I would rather go through Royal Marines recruit training again twice than build a personal training business from scratch in London. My opinion of why service folk struggle so much after leaving is mainly because civilian life is just so much harder. Nobody has your back. You’re not surrounded by all of your best friends, who share the same situation. Monthly beer money won’t just appear in your bank account. Everything costs, a lot, especially in London. Bills, bills, bills and no perceived control over your own life. People often think that going to war or being in the military is uncontrolled and stressful. On the contrary, dear Watson. A good Marine is well organized and has his shit together, all the time. All admin jobs are completed before going to bed every single day so you can literally wake up and operate, immediately. This is a polar opposite of civilian, self-employed life, where no matter how organized or productive you are, you always go to bed with a mountain of other things to do. A good Marine practices his weapons and combat drills so his brothers can rely on him when the shit hits the fan. Again, a polar opposite from civilian life where nobody has your back and people who call themselves colleagues are mostly just pretending. The
The Psychedelic Marine is a vivid portrait of both the anguish of war and the power of entheogens and shamanic ritual to help combat veterans complete the inner journey combat begins, and heal from PTSD and the deep, traumatic loss from war. Author, Alex Seymour, enlisted as a teen in the Royal Marines Commandos and served for six years, completing two tours of duty, only to re-enlist 20 years later. Alex served another tour of duty in Afghanistan where he suffered severe losses. Host and shaman, Christina Pratt, speaks with Alex about the relationship between our fears, beliefs, traumas, and PTSD and the depth at which we can let go when faced with our own direct experience of The Sacred. Join us this week as we explore how ayahuasca in shamanic ceremony can offer a way to help soldiers prepare for war and help combat veterans heal from it.
