Fake Geek Girls - A Critical Look at Pop Culture

He's mean, he's green, and he may just be the perfect representation of authenticity, in the existentialist sense. Join us as we journey into the depths of the swamp to discuss the Shrek franchise!Note: We're a little unsatisfied with how our conversation about gender play in the franchise played out, so, to clarify: the gender play in Shrek is interesting in comparison to Disney's queer coding of villains, but it is still transphobic and not at all good representation. The point we wanted to make here was that the Shrek franchise embraces nonconformity, not that it is actually well-done or worthy of praise. Some Links You May Find Interesting:Mixing It Up: Generic Complexity and Gender Ideology in Early Twenty-first Century Fairy Tale Films by Cristina Bacchilega and John RiederKantian Cosmopolitanism and the Dreamworkification of the Next Generation by Marianna VardalosThe Mouse is Dead, Long Live the Ogre: Shrek and the Boundaries of Transgression by Daniel Downes and June M. Navigating student loans is terrifying. Paying for college is the most stressful part of the process, and it's no surprise why. Most freshman in college have little to no financial literacy and schools rarely prepare students for the burden they'll need to take on to reach their higher education goals. In this episode we'll tell you exactly what you need to know in order to take on student loans without drowning in debt upon graduation. Check out the show notes below for our list of resources Michelle mentions throughout the podcast. They are usually tied to a federal index, such as the LIBOR, and change with the index. Many banks claim that you won't be likely to see significant increases, but be cautious: Michelle saw a 6% increase in the interest rate of one of her loans over a period of 3 years. I step in when you want to double and triple growth. Diana Pereira is committed to her clients in a way that's inspiring. She's one of the Founders of the Impact Hub in Santa Barbara, and the Founder of Balance Financial Management, located in the Funk Zone of Santa Barbara. We know her from the early days of the Impact Hub when it was still a dream, and she presented the vision at the Santa Barbara Library, several years ago. Since then, the Hub has grown into a center for entrepreneurship in Santa Barbara. Her work at the Impact Hub was recognized with a highly coveted Spirit of Entrepreneurship Award in 2018 in the Green and Entrepreneurship category. Note: We're going to interviewing the 2018 winners over a period of months, to help celebrate the work that the organization is doing. Diana sees her company's role at Balance as the backbone to startups and non-profits. She said she's been doing payroll and accounting since she was eleven years old and has been a CFO for over 15 years. She lights up when you ask her about success stories at the Impact Hub. Her current favorite is Cognixion, founded by Andreas Forsland. They're on the cutting edge of AI, creating products that accelerate and enrich human communication and connection. One of the things that I appreciate about Diana is that she sees herself as a part of the team. If you poke a view into her office in the Funk Zone, you'll see an excellent brick room, windows on two walls, and a shelf that wraps around the room that has computers, that everyone stands up to work on. It's cool, and if they need to sit or take a meeting, they're in the Impact Hub, with plenty of room to spread out when they need to. Congratulations to Diana, and the rest of the 2018 SOE Winners.

Join us every week for a new episode, as we document the process from the beginning—the ups, the downs, and everything in between. Before planning fatigue sets in, why not just build a better block? That’s the approach of Jason Roberts who leads Team Better Block. Jason is a charismatic man who works with communities – first his own in Oak Cliff, Texas, and now with communities around the world – to turn vacant properties into lively, thriving blocks that showcase what’s possible in a neighborhood. He usually has to break a few laws to do it, but the result is places people love and want to be. It’s an approach that employs acting your way to success versus planning your way to success. John starts us off this week with an epileptic introduction. Then Warren revives a segment we haven't had in a long time by introducing a new, darker superhero. This guy turns 8-track tapes into weaponized bibles. Yeah. You read that correctly. Actually, they're just fucking bibles, but Warren likes to call them "weaponized" because he's a dick. If you think the whole setup is terrible, wait till you hear his name. I want to punch Warren in the neck right now, just thinking about it. Hello Survivor Fans, This is part 2 of our 2 part Survivor Guatemala preview show. In these 2 episodes, we read through the bios and studied the pictures starting with Jaime and continuing through Rafe. Just like in part 1, we gave our feedback based on this data plus whatever we could gleen from the Early Show video preview. This segment concludes with summaries provided by listeners Bill, Gloria, and a special editorial commentary by Enzo. We've also made the preview video from the early show available . It's a chance to get a better glimpse of the new Survivors beyond the static pictures and cheesy bios. It's an MPEG2 file and it's quite large weighing in at about 55MB. I can't guarantee it will play on everyone's machine. If you have trouble with it, let us know via email and I'll see about re-encoding it into other formats. I recommend you do a "save as" instead of just clicking the link: Survivor Guatemala Early Show Preview Video So lets wrap up at guessing who from this new batch of Survivor contestants will be the first to go and listing the reasons we think each person may or may not have a chance at winning. If you have comments or feedback, you can call and leave a voicemail at 206-350-JASS(5277). You can record an audio comment on your PC and send it to us via email at joannandstacyshow@gmail.com.
