I am and have always been a huge Pixar fan! I am also a music therapist. So, when Coco came out and had a scene that reminded me of my own line of work, I was so happy. On this episode, I talk about how music and memory are depicted in Coco, and how it looks compared to real life music therapy sessions I've had. I also talk about music and the brain in an evolutionary sense, and wonder what music therapy memory groups will look like in the future. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nittygrittyofditties/support

Few movies have quite the nuanced take on life and death as those made for young audiences—and few with the deftness that Pixar’s Coco has. After returning from a honeymoon in Mexico, Derek & Laurel explore the traditions of Dia de los Muertos as they relate to Miguel Rivera’s journey in the 2017 film, all tied together through the power of love and music. Themes of memory, personal and universal relationships, and storytelling as culture round out this week’s Midnight Myth. A sincerely heart-breaking thought crossed my mind; I am NOT doing enough to incorporate my heritage, culture, and stories of my family into my daily life. Just like in Pixar's Coco, memories of my greats are not being passed down from generation to generation ensuring I don't forget them; who we are and where we came from. So this week we have decided to find and remember some of these stories. Reaching out to family and getting to hear more about our past. Enjoy and let us know what you think and what stories would you like to share. We would love to hear all about them.

Nerd Flix & Chill: Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Beyond!

Pixar's latest film, Coco has arrived in theaters and it is time for our podcast review of the film. There was a time when it seems as though every Pixar film was a monster hit, and a treasure of modern storytelling. The studio was unstoppable. Recently however, they have been in a bit of a slump. Inside out earned rave reviews and was an outstanding film, but The Good Dinosaur and Cars 3 fell well short of expectations both critically and financially.   But now Coco is here...and it is fantastic. It's dazzling visuals, enchanting music and heartfelt story make it one of Pixar's finest films. It is a love letter to Mexican culture, showing respect and reverence while still having some fun with tradition without mocking it.   This film is everything we love about going to the movies. A rich environment with character we connect with and a story that with great aspiration.   Please enjoy our podcast review of Coco.   Let us know your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter Subscribe on iTunes or listen on Stitcher

Join the CGM crew as they revisit the Battlefront II microtransactions fallout and net neutrality, take a look at Pixar's Coco, and give reviews of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. In the ever-evolving drama surrounding unfair microtransactions in EA's Star Wars: Battlefront II, people are seeking government action in regulating the gambling associated with loot boxes. But will this type of action help or hurt gaming? Brendan Frye leads the discussion as the team reflects on the actions taken by French Senator Jérôme Durain, Belgium Minister of Justice, Koen Geens, and Hawaiian State Representative, Chris Lee. Net neutrality is up for debate once again as the new Chairman of the FCC, Ajit V. Pai, a former Associate General Counsel at Verizon Communications Inc., is looking reverse Net Neutrality in the United States. The team discuss the ramifications this might bring and the potential of this event taking place. In reviews, Phil gives us a heart-wrenching run-down of the newest Pixar release, Coco, the story of a young Mexican boy's journey of discovery and sense of family in the land of the dead. Brendan Quinn got his hands on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, the most immersive Skyrim game to date. Finally, Lisa's obsession with Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp comes to a close with the release of this twee game featuring a torrent of very needy animal friends.
