“You don't have to overthink it- you just gotta have fun with what you're doing and enjoy the process!” [Catch the LIVE replay on Instagram or Youtube to watch behind the scenes!] Today's episode will always hold a special place in my heart because it's my first ever face-to-face interview, and also the fact that we recorded it on Olympic Day- and who else better to represent the value of the Olympic Games besides three-time gold medalist Misty May-Treanor?! I'm truly so lucky to be able to sit down and have a chat with Misty about her journey from the moment she stepped onto a volleyball court, to the accomplished athlete that she is today. In this episode, Misty talks about:- - How she started beach volleyball and played in her first tournament with her dad, Butch - Why she thinks she has never had the “perfect” game - Why the Brazilians were always her toughest opponents - How her training regimen has shifted throughout multiple years (in season & off season) - Why every athlete should start a food journal! - Her mentality when facing injuries (this one is really good!) - How to develop the ability to be a step or two ahead of your opponents - The main difference that separated she and Kerri with the other teams - Why being vulnerable is actually so important in our lives And as usual, much much more! This episode with Misty is a very special episode that I will cherish forever. I really hope that you enjoy it and that you've learned as much from her as I did! Hope you had a great Olympic Day! Alison did some sport climbing; Jill did elements of a triathlon, and we both participated on Team Olympic Fever for Team USA's Virtual Race (we're currently sitting in 3rd place--wooo!). We loved seeing everyone's celebrations -- if you haven't gotten your participation certificate, send us your proof of participation. We'll get a certificate to you! It's that time of year when the International Olympic Committee members get together for their semiannual IOC Session, and this one was a big one! First up, the big decision: Who will host the 2026 Winter Olympics? Spoiler alert (in case you haven't heard the celebrations all the way where you are): It's Milan-Cortina. Jill watched the bid presentations, and boy, did Stockholm-Åre have a sound plan guided by the IOC's New Norm/Sustainability push. However, as Alison pointed out, Milan-Cortina had more support the whole way through, and they had the government guarantees. What do you think matters more to the voting members? Also at the session, The IOC celebrated its 125th anniversary by inaugurating its brand new headquarters, the Olympic House. Speaking of sustainability, the IOC could not stop talking about how sustainable the building is--and we have to say, it is pretty cool. Check it out here. And check out the fancy guards here. The additional sports for Paris 2024 are one step closer to being added to the program. They are: Skateboarding Surfing Sport Climbing Breaking While we'll get to experience the first three at Tokyo 2020, Breaking will be a first--and sure, everyone's talking about that dance sport now, but what really grabbed our attention was where the surfing competition could possibly take place. We've learned many other things during this IOC Session, including: The bidding process for hosting the Games will change again The IOC has its own broadcasting awards AIBA, while not running the boxing tournament at Tokyo 2020, will be putting together the pool of officials. Anyone see a problem there? WADA is going through the RUSADA samples they finally got a hold of. It's not going to be pretty. Tokyo 2020 tickets are on many people's minds right now. Jill and Contributor Ben snagged a few of the ones they requested. If you didn't get everything you want to see, there will be more opportunities. One way to stay on top of them is to subscribe to this bot, which will email you whenever a flash sale occurs. Also, the U.S. Olympic Committee has officially changed its name to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee. This is a big, visible step to becoming a more inclusive organization--hooray! We have a lot of celebrations coming up this summer. Family Health and Fitness Day is this Saturday, June 8, Olympic Day is June 23, and the entire month of July is Park and Recreation Month! With all of these celebrations in mind, we wanted to highlight the ways in which parks and recreation are part of creating a culture of fitness, as well as making sure that everyone has access to fitness opportunities, regardless of their abilities. Prepare to be inspired by today’s episode. We’re thrilled to be joined by Jennifer French, who has an amazing story of resilience after overcoming a snowboarding accident in 1998 in which she became a quadriplegic, to becoming a silver medalist representing Team USA at the 2012 Paralympic Games in sailing. We’re also excited to have Sam Mendelsohn, CEO of Greenfields Outdoor Fitness, which has been a leader in accessible outdoor fitness equipment since 2007. Greenfields Outdoor Fitness is also the sponsor of Family Health & Fitness Day, Park and Recreation Month and NRPA’s Parks Build Community. Jennifer shares her story with us and explains the challenges she faced after her injury, as well as how she had to adapt to continue living an active lifestyle. She also talks about the things she does to stay fit now and gives some tips for others who may be in a similar situation. Sam and Jennifer also talk about how they connected, and how Jennifer’s story inspired Sam’s work in creating accessible outdoor fitness equipment. Sam shares some of the trends he’s seeing related to accessibility and physical fitness in parks and recreation. They both agree there’s no one way to ensure that everyone in a community has the opportunity to get fit, regardless of physical or cognitive ability, and that getting the community involved is absolutely critical. No one knows the needs of a community more than the people living in that community. Listen to the full episode to learn more about Jennifer and Sam’s inspiring work — it may even inspire you to go out there and get fit! Bonjour a Montreal! Jill and contributor Ben Jackson report in from the Montreal 1976 Olympic Village, where they're staying for a few days. They talk about all of things that are holdovers from the Games, as well as some of the quirks of the building. Our guest this week is Canadian Olympian Olya Ovtchinnikova who competed at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in sabre fencing. In the first part of her interview with Jill, Olya talks about how the sport of sabre works (and why you need to practice watching before Tokyo 2020). No longer competing, Olya's now working with the Canadian Olympic Committee as a Manager in the Athlete Marketing Program. You can follow her on Twitter here. Follow Team Canada on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook too! Don't forget about Olympic Day! Try a new sport or learn something about the Olympics and Olympic values, post the results on social with #OFOD. You've got until the end of the month to share in the fun (on this episode, Alison shares some of the things she's doing to celebrate). A look back, a look ahead. In 2024, Paris will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the second time they hosted the Olympics. Jill and Alison spend this episode looking at the innovations from Paris 1924 and the parallels between it and Paris 2024. We look forward to what the 2024 Games will bring! (we can only hope it's as good as Alison's rendition of the "Chariots of Fire" theme). Plus, a trivia extravaganza, and we hear your reports from Olympic Day #OFOD! Remember, you can celebrate Olympic Day by learning something new about the Olympic Movement; participating in a sport (new to you or otherwise); practicing Olympic values; or getting someone to buy you a steak.....well, maybe not that last one, but you get our drift. Post up your pics and video on social with #OFOD. DISCLAIMER: OLYMPIC® is a trademark of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (“USOPC”).
