Dhritarshtra had one son from Gandhari's maid, Yuyutsu. Yuyutsu was different from other Kaurava brothers and chose to be on the right side of Dharma all his life. He was the one who would warn Pandava brothers regarding Duryodhan's schemes to harm them as a kid. In the Mahabharat war he chose to fight against his brothers and chose to side with Pandavas. Introduction Aren’t Puranas just a bunch of weird mythical stories! Srimad Bhaagwatam is not just a Purana but a Mahapuran and one must have earned a lot of “punya” to be able to even listen to it! Yes, Puranas are mystical literature, but to understand them in their full significance one has to have a deep understanding of Vedantic philosophy otherwise they will seem to be just weird stories. Even the word “Bhaagwatam” has deep meaning. Why was it written in the form of stories? Everyone loves stories. Srimad Bhaagwatam has beautiful stories about the Lord, Sri Krishna, which have a lot of symbolism to invoke devotion and remove all our misconceptions. Its main objective is to absorb the mind in the Lord and bring about surrender. For whom was it written? Anyone and everyone! Certain qualifications are required to understand the deep philosophy of Vedanta. Bhaagwatam on the other hand is for everyone, be it a small child, a scholar, a sinner or a devotee. Everyone benefits from it because Bhakti does not require any qualification other than love which we all have in abundance our hearts. Srimad Bhaagwatam begins with an Invocation and the Mahatmayam: Invocation Sat-chit-anand is the Swaroop or nature of Bhagwan. Non duality is core of Bhagwatam. Mahatmayam – is to extol the glory of Bhaagwat. When we know the glory of something we will not under value it. Through stories of Shukdev Maharaj’s birth, his dispassion, Shaunaka rishi’s questions, Suta ji’s replies etc we gain an insight into the magnificence of this great katha! Narad ji; who was he really – a mischief maker or a great missionary?! The glory of the 7 day saptah has also been explained through the story of Praikshit’s death. If one listen’s to it in 7 days one too will get mukti like Parikshit.

The LOVIN Show Ep 8: with Parikshit Balochi by Lovin Dubai
-The Srimad Bhagavata Purana is as sacred as the Bhagavad Gita, as authentic as the Vedas themselves, and as metaphysically deep as the Upanishads. -Vyasa says that the Vedas (shruti) take precedence over the Smrti, which in turn take precedence over the Puranas such as the Srimad Bhagavata Purana. -The Bhagavatam teaches transcendental values. What should we do after we have obtained enough wealth and enjoyment? A noble-hearted person will seek for something higher. Narada asked Vyasa to write the Bhagavatam to explain this.-King Parikshit, an ideal ruler, had only 7 days to live so asked a sage, “What should a dying man do?” One should be able to die with the form of God in our heart. The whole Bhagavatam is narrated as a response to this question.-Highest devotee of God feels the presence of God in all beings (immanence) and everything is in God (omnipresent)-The permanent residential address of God is the heart of a pure unselfish person.-The episode of King Nimi and the nine yogis comes in the 11th skanda of the Bhagavatam. Nine questions are asked to nine sages and the dialogue constitutes the essence of the Bhagavata Purana.-Question 1) Please teach me about the Bhagavata Dharma. -Kavi explains Bhagavata Dharma vs. Dharma-Link all actions to a spiritual reality.-This gets rid of fear, of divine discontentment.-Lord Krishna also tells Arjuna to never fear because all good actions will carry one forward in the next life.-Spiritualize the secular, do not secularize the spiritual.-Seeing God everywhere means there is no fear because there is oneness everywhere. -When we forget our true nature (avarana shakti), we inevitability think of ourselves as a physical/mental body and there is no end to problems. -At the highest level of Bhakti, you get the same experience as Advaita. –Question 2) What are the characteristics of a Bhagavatam (devotee)?-Hari answers that the highest devotee sees God in everything and everything in God. There is an identity between God and the creation. -At the experience level, it is the same as Advaita. Shankaracharya says Advaitins have no quarrel with anybody!-It is a distant goal, but just as in the Sthitaprajna sections of the Bhagavad Gita, we can practice these characteristics to evolve.-At the middle (Madhyama) stage, we practice prema, maitri, kripa, upeksha.-Maitri means living in the company of people who are on the spiritual path. This association is a highly effective way to reinforce our spiritual life.-Prema means having love for God.-Kripa means helping those good people who are less knowledgeable about spirituality and who want to progress.-Upeksha means remaining indifferent and at a long distance from those who may harm your interest in spiritual life. You need an inner filtering mechanism.-At the middle stage, we can learn to harmonize the need for God's grace and self-effort. A farmer needs to clear the weeds and grass (self-effort) before the rain (God's grace) will be of help. Similarly, we achieve grace-worthiness through self-effort. We are able to understand the usefulness of God's grace. Through this, we develop an inner filtering mechanism and evolve in the Madhyama stage.

In this episode, we explore the story of King Parikshit. A good and noble King, who lets his pride get the best of him. The King makes a series of choices that may eventually lead him to his death... Will he learn his lesson or face certain doom? The story gives us an opportunity to ask ourselves where pride might get int the way of the flow of life. It invites us to look at the choices we make and realize that there is always an opportunity to make a different choice. SynTalk thinks about the tantalizing cocktail of poisons, toxins & venoms, and wonders if ‘what does not kill us makes us stronger’. We also constantly explore the striking similarity (in many ways) between medicine and poison (a la the vagueness of the word pharmakon). The concepts are derived off / from Sant Eknath, Parikshit, Derrida, & RG Macfarlane, among others. We peek into the world of snakes, scorpions, bacteria, rats, SNARE proteins, Botox, & bioterror. Why are there poisons in nature at all, and is there a link to the natural tendency towards ecological diversity? Is nothing poison in the world? How ‘the dose is the poison’. We (illustratively) explore the origins, structure, molecular & cellular actions, transmission, and dynamics of the Botulinum Neurotoxin (BoNT). How the Botulinum bacteria can survive for many months inside us (unlike any other bacteria). Do we have to have crime to have a stable society, and do poisonous plants & animals serve a parallel purpose in nature? How scorpion poison can be used to (potentially) treat Brugada Syndrome, and its links with cardiac sodium channel. How it is very difficult to use vaccines to permanently protect against venoms given the speed with which toxins act. We also borrow concepts such as padarth and dravya from vaiseshika philosophy to understand the (beautiful) metaphysical link of poison with the concept of ‘space’. How ‘substance’ is something that has different quality and action. Is venom a highly prestigious molecule for the snake itself for finding prey? How, then, do the non venomous snakes make a living? Why a child is (often) not afraid of a cobra? Is it possible to look at (molecular) structure and predict its (poisonous) action? Is it possible to identify the exact molecule (& not the cocktail) responsible for blocking the pre synaptic receptors? Is a more advanced society more vulnerable to poisons? What does poison look like? Should our nature ‘be’ to understand poisons? The SynTalkrs are: Dr. H.S. Bawaskar (medicine, Bawaskar Hospital & Research Centre, Mahad), & Prof. Bal Ram Singh (biophysical chemistry, indic studies, UMass, Dartmouth).
Episode 99 - This is the final piece that brings us around, back to the beginning. We covered some of this territory before, back in Episode 2, but at the time, it was hard to explain that Parikshit was Arjun's grandson and that Takshaka had an ancient feud with the dynasty going back to the fire at the Khandava Forest. Also, back then we were anxious to get going with the story itself, and all the digressions with angry brahmins and talking snakes only made things confusing at the time.So now we have re-visited the beginning at our leisure, and now you know the circumstances in which the Mahabharata was first publicly recited. The burnt snake guts must have still been warm when Vyasa's disciple Vaishampayana began the tale.So that's all for a while. I am working on a commentary for episode 100-- reviewing the story and considering what was included and what was left out. Please visit this blog (http://mahabharatapodcast.com) and leave comments, or questions, or any requests for what I should include in my final summing up of the epic! Thanks, Lawrence
Episode 96 - Arjun returns home with some bad news and some good news. The bad news is that they have lost their powers and have lost their friends. The good news is that they finally get to retire. Yudhistira doesn't hesitate. He strips off his fine garments and leads his brothers into retirement. Krpa is put in charge of defense, Yuyutsu is made regent, and Parikshit is king. Parikshit's grandmother Subhadra (Krishna's sister) is made Dowager Empress. The Pandavas then take a final tour of India, visiting even the former site of the magical city of Dwarka. Finally, they head north, for Heaven, with their little dog Dharma.
Episode 83 - The brothers learn of the massacre of their sons & allies, and summon Draupadi to break the news. As usual, all she wants is revenge. Thus the Pandavas go off on one final mission to avenge the death of their sons. They track down Ashwatthaman and find him hanging out with Vyasa and Narada. As soon as they set eyes on each other, the boy Brahmin sets off his Brahmashira weapon, which is 100s of times more powerful than the Brahmastra, and sounds a lot like a hydrogen bomb-- "All living things are destroyed and no rains fall for 12 years."The Rishis step in and order Arjun to put his guns away, but Ashwatthaman cannot retract this weapon once it is unleashed, so instead, he turns it loose on the wombs of the Pandava women, making them sterile and killing their one remaining heir-- Uttara's unborn son Parikshit.Fortunately, Krishna revives the kid, but there shall be no more Pandava offspring after this.To help explain how Ashwatthaman was able to pull off this massacre single-handedly, Krishna tells a few stories about Shiva, and just how temperamental and dangerous he can be. In fact, Shiva really comes off as more of a force of nature than a Saddhu living in the hills. My guess is, that if we understood the physics of Time, we might realize that Shiva stands in for one of the main functions of time, which is change. The other aspects of time are novelty (Brahma), and the moment of Now, which I believe is represented by Vishnu.
Episode 98 - This is the first of two episodes that take us from the death of the Pandavas down to the Snake Sacrifice, held by Arjun's great-grandson. We skimmed over this back at the beginning of the podcast, because back then we were unfamiliar with who all these people were. But now it makes sense to bring it around to the beginning again. Not much is recorded about the life of Parikshit. We only know about how he died, and the many snakes and Rishis who were involved in the process. So, I'm not quite through yet!
