Kevin Sweeney, author of, "The Making of a Mystic: My Journey With Mushrooms, My Life as a Pastor, and Why It's Okay for Everyone to Relax," didn't find God through religion. His entry-way to faith wasn't wrought with the oppression many of us today are deconstructing from."Missionaries" have been thought of as those who are "taking the good news out, to set the captives free." Pastor Kevin claims that his "missionary" was a handful of mushroom trips. Now that his hallucinogenic experiences have pointed to the wholeness and freedom that can only come from an inherent union with an all-loving God, he has no need for more mushroom, but rather presses on to "live the life" they pointed toward. To do otherwise, he sees as an act of betrayal to the sanctity of the revelation. At the top of the episode, co-hosts Matt Oxley and Robbie Madison reflect on episode one of the new Seacoast Church Podcast that Joey hosts. Joey and Robbie talk about their relationship with Grammy-winning Brandon Lake and the unique vantage point of watching a friend's career explode. Author and Theologian, Sharon Putt (formerly Sharon Baker), Chip Judd and host, Joey Svendsen all have similar spiritual upbringings but Sharon and Joey believe in a Christ-centered universal salvation. It's one thing to reject this belief, another thing for a Christian to say the bible doesn't support it. One's view of scripture may "clearly say anything" he think it says, but what is his view about the (seemingly clear) passages that discus humanity and all of earth being redeemed. We discuss God and love, in context of the afterlife; and whether there had to be an adversary for us to be able to truly love and chose God. Joey pushes back on the very common and sensible objection of “you're defining God and love by your own standards.” Both Sharon and Chip are very biblically studied and Chip has never considered Jesus saving everyone. I had no idea the direction my home state was heading in. Our government is making some adjustments to their “capital punishment policies,” which includes (yes, you read right) a firing squad. We talk about this while Shane shares the correlation between capital punishment and slavery. According to Shane, this issue can't be separated by race. We talk the theological and moral implications of all this and dispel of some assumptions held by more conservatively-wired folks. Host Joey Svendsen was on the BlackSheep Podcast to talk about himself for an hour. Hosts of BlackSheep, Mason and Cullen, ask Joey what he believes and what music he's listening to and they were wonderful in allowing us to release this on our channel as well. Joey goes into the history of Pastor With No Answers and how it represents a biographical synopsis of all the ways he's changed in his faith. And God forbid any one admit he is a Christian mainly due to spiritual experiences/encounters. Joey is a true music snob (so he's told) and shares his 10 favorite Christmas songs, what five albums influenced his musical tastes, why Emery stood out to him during pop-screamo's heyday, and how Underoath's freshman release album was the only UO material he listened to. Make sure you stick around for the outtakes of the Mars Hill spoof. The BlackSheep PodcastMars Hill Sketch contributors: Justina Sparling, Jason Farr, Grayson LIttle, Jed Payne, Hayne Griffen. How do you ever have a "normal feeling Christmas" again when on that one Christmas morning, you woke up to the news Rian Fuller woke up to. On Christmas of 2015, Rian lost her best friend Karen Bessinger, who just happened to be the one who gave her birth. Here we discuss whether or not Christmas is "redeemable" for Rian again; and we wonder why the hell couldn't God have just picked a different day to take her mom home? Maybe September 14th? Or how about January 14th? Christmas is expected to be -- and treated by the masses -- as the "Most Wonderful Time of the Year," but for those who suffered great loss in recent prior years, this is impossible. And this tension between "happy holidays" and grief, is utterly painful, so I'm told. The pain of this world, the untimely loss of one you call mother and friend, in this episode we reflect on life, loss, and eternal perspective. There's also some mysterious "post death interactions" that will have you supernatural romantics smiling and crying, while the logical, boring people will roll eyes in skepticism. HA! Love to all. Merry Christmas. And we mourn with those who mourn. We pray more peace for all mankind. The kind that passes all understanding. Rest in Peace Karen Bessinger January 26, 1964 - Dec 25th 2015. Special thanks to Rian Fuller for sharing her life (and the life of her mom's) with us. *Rian was referred to on this episode inadvertently by her maiden name, "Bessinger." *Episodes mentioned in this episode:How Does a Widowed Mom in her 30s View Life and God? Join us!Ellen, Jack and Joey kick things off with a conversation about speaking in tongues. Joey thinks he speaks in tongues and is just fine with not being sure. Derek Webb has raised the eyebrows of many Evangelical Christians through the years, many of them huge fans of his prolific (former) Christian band, “Caedmon's Call.” We've seen this a hundred times. One of our “Christian heroes” starts to express doubt and maybe makes a controversial statement every now and then; next thing we know, our hero has deconstructed his faith, gotten a divorce and probably behind the scenes, tortures little kittens. Only Derek knows the ends and outs of his story, but on this episode, he invites us in to hear about it too. This includes his journey that landed him into this new space of re-investigating his faith. Derek now works at a church and is married to a singer and musician of a worship band. And he's traded in "beliefs" for hypotheses. Joey takes this opportunity to put Jack Hoey on the spot to share with Derek the season of time in which Derek, Mark Driscoll and Rob Bell were the three main faces on Jack's “Mount Rushmore" of Christian influencers. Derek is one hell of a dude and is writing a new album, “The Jesus Hypothesis,” in which he's reconsidering the possible implications of Jesus' life, teachings and resurrection. The story of my depressive disorder in 2019 is profoundly incomplete without including a narrative of my departure from the BadChristian Podcast and community. Or let's just say healthIER. – Joey BadChristian Podcast and community was started in 2013 by Matt Carter, Toby Morrell (of the band Emery) and friend, Joey Svendsen (pastor of a church in South Carolina). Brutally honest and often irreverent Christian podcasts like this are now a dime a dozen but at the time, “BC POD” occupied a unique space, and as a result of its quick rise in popularity, proved to be a vibe that many Christians had an appetite for. The three aforementioned hosts were not only co-workers but also good friends. Unfortunately, all humans are flawed and sometimes, even when motivated by the best intentions, relationships get broken to an extent in which they aren't salvageable. Over the years, Pastor With No Answers has had a big tent, allowing for a wide array of perspectives, some of which would get your ass canceled by the liberals and others getting you completely cancelled by the conservatives. The intent of this podcast however has always been to be a platform for people, not a position. A podcast where real people share their real journeys and utilize a public space to share candidly, raw and honest personal reflections, right or wrong, for better or for worst. It's a "pro people's podcast" that operates with the following belief: If we can find a common ground of love, we can also find a way to learn from one another and change personally for the better. Today, as we celebrate 300 episodes, representing the hearts and souls of people, we relive key moments of 5 different episodes that represent why this podcast exists (enjoy some fun, pivotal and light-hearted moments in between these five focal points):Episode 11:A pastor who didn't want us to air this episode, offended by the vulgarity we discussed. We ended up airing the episode, keeping him anonymous and voice disguised. Episode 251: Interview with a leader at Westboro Baptist “Church” Episode 120: Joey's and Pricilla recounting the day Pricilla flew out to say her last good-byes to her ailing father. Joey implored Pricilla before her departure, to make sure her dad is saved, so he wouldn't spend eternity in hell. They two discuss that sort of "christian thinking" and how Joey has changed in how he sees these things. Episodes 74 and 81: Mars Hill Women, in the context of love, speak out on the atrocities of Mark Driscoll.**Joey also processes his current processing of being connected to leadership who endorses Mark Driscoll's continued leadership in ministry. **Episode 150:After doing everything "by the book" (i.e. Bible), a father faces the prospect of God's promises not working the way he always believed they would. One of the few women to translate the Bible, Bonnie Lewis discusses her journey that led to this wonderful masterpiece. The journey was wrought with outside criticism revolving around a female's audaciousness to do such a thing as translate the Bible. Bonnie's “inner Fundamentalist" wasn't so quick to let her off the hook in pursuing this endeavor; but over time, her Maker made paths straight and vision cleared to proceed. Part of Pastor With No Answers extended family, Bonnie, shares her journey that led to her writing the enlightening idiomatic translation of the Bible. It's called Timshel, a collection of the most commonly heard stories in the Old and New Testament. So, what do we make out of the chauvinistic nature of the Bible? When everyone is getting a different meaning out of the Bible, how do we know what to trust? And what finite being gets to be an authority of God's work? We discuss this and more.We also discuss a survival story from the big Texas snow that occurred this past winter. Joey comes clean with how Bonnie (and her husband, Cy) were recipients of some “anxiety texts” of his, around the time he was in crisis with his mental health. The pandemic has put us all under a lot of pressure. We find ourselves at the edge of sanity more than we'd like. It's no surprise then, that it seems there are more videos surfacing of "Karens" lashing out at people on the streets, and at neighborhood Starbucks. The pandemic has put us all under a lot of pressure. We find ourselves at the edge of sanity more than we'd like. This might be our longest podcast episode ever. It's a stitching of a few different recording sessions. I like it, though. It feels like a metaphor for parenting. You have great thoughts, but get interrupted constantly and have to pick up where you left off later. In this one we talk about The Algorithm. We watched a documentary on Netflix called The Social Dilemma. That doc was a good one, talking about privacy, social media influence, and how the algorithm helps to shape who we are and the decisions we make. We also talk about our impending move to Oregon. It's been on our mind. It is on our mind. These are the chronicles of said move. I hope you enjoy this episode and extra points if you make it from start to finish. Tim Phelps from Westboro Baptist Church was recently on the Pastor With No Answers podcast w/ Joey Svendsen. Westboro Baptist is infamous for picketing soldiers funerals and other events, holding signs such as "God Hates F*gs" and "Thank God For Dead Soldiers". So we played and reacted to some key clips from that controversial conversation (it's worth listening to that episode from PWNA and that podcast in general). Also Jeff has a Molar Report, Zack lost a tiny friend & we beat up on some social media strawmen in what may be our best, grossest and definately most recent episode ever. - Leave us a voicemail at anchor.fm/bbbpod - Subscribe to Bros Bibles & Beer on Apple Podcasts - Rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! - https://www.facebook.com/brosbiblesbeer - https://twitter.com/brosbiblesbeer - https://www.brosbiblesbeer.com - Instagram: @brosbiblesbeer - Email: brosbiblesbeer@gmail.com Bros Bibles & Beer is Jeff, Scott & Zack & Andy Find us wherever fine podcasts are distributed. Greetings Congregation! I hope all is well out there. So, in a perfect coincidence, Joey Svendson finally released an episode i did with him for Pastor With No Answers a few months ago. It was right around the time i got back on medication, and we talk all about mental health. Its interesting that he chose now to release it since i'm going through a mini-crisis of mental health currently. It's a great conversation and i'm glad i can finally share it with you guys. Let me know what you think! churchandotherdrugs@gmail.com patreon.com/churchandotherdrugs storefrontier.com/churchandotherdrugs
Joey, Natalie, and John discuss God’s character in relation to different beliefs on the afterlife. Is Universalism in the mix as a valid position for a Christian to hold? How does a God who condemns billions to hell line up with a God of love? Do people believe in universalism merely because it feels better? How much can our faith be based on our experience? How do we raise our kids in light of our own doubts and evolution of faith? Jack Hoey (the father) also sits down with Joey to discuss the presidential term of Donald Trump, some bad things and yes, some good things. By the way, I (Joey) don’t think Calvinists are universally despicable. Clowning around as always. Family man, Underoath’s Electronics guy, and successful entrepreneur, Dudley catches us up on some of his life. Chris still goes to church, he’s a virtual reality enthusiast, and like many of us, has to be careful with his eating. (Interview at 24 min mark). My guest this week on N2M is Joey Svendsen. Joey is one of those Bad Christian guys. He also has his own podcast that I personally love called The Pastor With No Answers. Joey is also the James Island Campus at Sea Coast church, the author of the book Fundamentalist. Most importantly Joey is a husband and father and fellow Boston Celtics fan. Joey and I connect to talk about his journey with depression, and the stigma of mental health in the church. You can find Joey at https://badchristian.com/ … http://www.pastorwithnoanswers.com/ …. And buy his book Fundamental at all the usual online suspects. So sit back, buckle up and adjust the rearview you are listening to Nashville to Memphis.
What does it say about the character of God If there’s multitudes of people who will taste death without ever having an opportunity to be redeemed, only to be punished forever? How can God really love those whom He doesn’t reach out to? If an earthly father had the ability to rescue all of his kids but only rescues his favorites, wouldn’t we all call him a bad father? Chris Date (Rethinking Hell) and Dan Koch (Depolarize! Podcast and Reconstruct Podcast) see God very differently and during this episode, talk through their differences in the context of Calvinism, the likelihood of this doctrine being true and the implications if it is. Special guest Joey Svendsen, host of The BadChristian Podcast and Pastor With No Answers, joins us to talk about podcasting, cussing, diversity, and how he deals with the number of different voices and opinions in the world.
Confession with hopefully good motives, I really had a bit of a heavy heart listening to episode 155 of Pastor With No Answers. I hope it comes across respectful.
Many of you have asked, so here you go. On a recent Sunday morning, I taught on a few points in C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity, including a needed lack of emphasis on works, the needed element of mystery in prayer, and the truth about how challenging marriage is. Have fun!
Men's Mental Health Month - Today is a little different format as we dive into Week 2. First, we will hear some of the interview that Richie and I did on the Pastor With No Answers Variety Podcast (just Pastor With No Answers at the time of recording). After that, we get to hear Chapter 11 of The Fundamentalist, the book written by the Pastor With No Answers himself - Joey Svendsen. A clip from Awkwardly Antic rounds out the dialogue and Zane shares a PTSD App we found to share with you. Make sure to subscribe, rate, and SHARE! Morgan joins us to share her appreciation for Badchristian and Pastor With No Answers as a lesbian listener. According to Morgan, this family of podcasts does well in keeping an open heart, admitting ignorance and approaching sensitive subjects with humility, something she says the church is unfortunately too often lacking. As a result, folks like Morgan go through seasons in which they are unsure if they have a place in the body of Christ.
This week we join forces with Joey Svendsen (of Pastor With No Answers and The BadChristian Podcast) to have a very candid, unedited conversation with his pal Kerry, who supports our 45th President in all that he does. Matt Macdonald and Nate Henry (Don’t Feed the Trolls Podcast) joins Pastor With No Answers to extend last weeks conversation with our Trump supporter, Kerry. We talk media biases, racism, erasing history and who the real Donald Trump is. It would be nice if these sorts of conversations were a dime a dozen.
Is there just as much evidence in the bible for Universalism as there is for heaven and hell, hell being a place for eternal conscious torment? What joy would it be to find in heaven that God saves everyone? What if the Christians “rule the nations,” but every one else is happy as a peach? Wes Fahlenkamp, a Pastor With No Answers listener, author of Jesus and Hitler, writer of the blog The Biggest Jesus, reads and believes in the same bible as the church, finds Universalism to be the most logical conclusion to the bible’s teaching on the afterlife. biggestjesus.com
Pastor With No Answers listener tells us of a miracle that happened right before his eyes and podcast regulars Jack Hoey (Christian) and Scott Mellinger (Atheist) weigh in to assess. To be a miracle or not to be, that is the question. Jack Hoey: @Jackthelesser Scott Mellinger: @officialzao Music: "Atomos V" and "Atomos XI" by Winged Victory For the Sullen
He tries to make a wager on it. Will it eventually be acceptable for people to get high to seek God? And Joey’s brother is no longer host of Pastor With No Answers. Thanks, BC Club!
Pastor With No Answers regulars, Jack Hoey III and Scott Mellinger (Zao) discuss with Joey and Jared the plausibility of miracles. How often does God heal people? Why do so many Christians slap the label “miracle” on occurrences that easily have other explanations? Does Jesus only heal those with enough faith? Have we as a human species evolved past the point in which we need the concept of “miracles” to explain things science is now suited to explain? These questions are discussed and real-life “miracles” are assessed and critiqued on the show.

Greetings! Ever found yourself in a debate with an intelligent atheist that left you walking with a slight limp? Any chance said debate was recorded for posterity, so that future generations may witness your demise for time immemorial? Well... you are not alone! This week we discuss my (potentially?) disastrous debate on Bad Christian Joey Svendsen's Pastor with No Answers Podcast, and the clobbering which ensued, with a couple amazing brothers: From Subversive Kingdom's Vox Podcast, Mike Erre and Andy Lara join us! We sort of walk back through the battlefield and see if we can learn a few things... who knows, maybe I'll sound smarter this time!? Enjoy!
