It is believed that macaroons originated some time in the 8th or 9th century in an Italian monastery. The desserts were introduced in France in 1533 when monks from the monastery joined King Henry II's pastry chef. Traditionally made with shredded coconut, almond flour, sugar or sweetened condensed milk and egg whites. Eventually, shredded coconut replaced the almond flour. Because they did not contain any flour, Jews in Italy ate them as treats during Passover. In 1903, macaroons appeared in a cookbook under a recipe for “coconut kisses.” Macaroons recently made one popular website's top 16 list of “All-time Favorite Cookies".

Chocolate coconut macaroons. Not almond cookies. But very simple cookies loaded with coconut and almost fudgy at the center. A true treat. And we're making them in our kitchen for this episode of COOKING WITH BRUCE & MARK.Hey there. We're veteran cookbook authors Bruce Weinstein & Mark Scarbrough. We've written and published three dozen cookbooks with more on the way. We've developed over 20,000 original recipes in the past twenty-five years. This is our podcast about food and cooking, our passion. We're happy you've joined us!Here are the segments for this podcast episode:[00:55] Our one-minute cooking tip: Always use kosher salt for brines and marinades.[03:12] We head to the kitchen and make simple chocolate coconut macaroons. Here's the recipe:Heat the oven to 350F/175 C fan or convection.Line an 18 x 13 inch/46 x 33 cm baking sheet with parchment paper.Beat 4 room-temperature large eggs, 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar, and a pinch of salt in a bowl with an electric mixer at high speed until soft peaks form.Beat in 1 cup/200 grams granulated white or caster sugar in small increments until it's all been added and you can't feel grains of sugar between your (clean) fingers.Remove the beaters and fold in one 14 ounce/400 gram package of sweetened, shredded coconut. Then fold in 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons/75 grams unsweetened cocoa powder until well combined.Drop by heaping, spiky tablespoons onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until firm to the touch. Cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before enjoying.[14:57] What's making us happy in food this week: jammy oat bars and dried pears.
Cody and Craig discussed the process of deconstructing theological assumptions by thinking about coconut macaroons, letting go of beliefs that are no longer true or beneficial, and the potential for reconstructing beliefs to align with a deeper truth. We've been using Sesh.com (Dear Sesh, sponsorship?) to guide our conversations. It's a great app that can work with Zoom. By providing a shareable agenda, with timers, meetings can stay on topic and on time. As an added bonus, we've been using the “ice-breaker” feature, which poses random questions, to begin and end our conversations. The conversation also covered a range of other topics including, sports as panentheistic (big word warning: we go against our own motto about not using big words), Christmas celebrations beyond Christmas Day, and experiences at various gourmet restaurants. this is a comedy ""podcast"" btw believe it or not. It is a joke, it is parody, it is satire. It is not serious; it is not meant to be taken seriously. I do not condone the physical harming or even light harassment of real estate agents in any way shape or form. Do not call, text, or email Jeffrey Doussan or Keller Williams of New Orleans. Do not write funny bad reviews on yelp or google or furnished finder. Do not send pipe bombs or bomb threats to his house or any of his listed properties. I mean it! If you do any of these things you will be banned from podcasts forever. Thank you enjoy the show. Looking at rentals is really fun cuz real estate agents and property managers are some of the most redacted and oblivious people you have to trust with your livelihood. Recently I had scheduled to see a place and the guy no showed, no contact I messaged and emailed him multiple times and 3 days later he texted "apologies out of town." He then proceeds to try to reschedule immediately for the next day at 11am I say can we do 2pm he says no we can't let's do Monday 2pm I say okay Monday 2pm he says great I say great and then he says actually we can do tomorrow Friday 2pm i say perfect cool then Friday at 11am he says you must think we're crazy but we're actually just short-handed can you do monday 2pm and then i showed up today Monday at 2pm and the guy is 10 minutes late, I text the guy and he said "oh Philip's not there?" Philip the minion shows up within 1 minute of me texting, Philip says haha it's good thing our office is right around the corner and he points to a building literally right behind the rental and gives me the dorkiest fcking smile and I want to drown Philip in a puddle. We go to open the door and he doesn't have the right keypad code. I stand around in the rain for about 5 minutes while he calls and texts people and then he's like oh we can just try the other side of the duplex and I asked if the other side is the same layout and price and furnishings and he said no so I said no and so we sat in the rain for another 5 minutes and he finally gets the code and we go in. It looks like the last tenant had just left, all the lights and tvs are on and trash cans full, poop splatters on the toilet and it smells like cat piss. Despite this, I message the property manager that I am interested and would like to move forward with my application and he likes my message and says nothing else. $1400/month. a few years ago, a property manager was stunned that I requested to inspect the house before signing a legal document that said we conducted an inspection and told me I was the first person to ever do so. He addressed me as "Gay bro" in a text and it was never acknowledged $1754/month 440 sq feet #italiano #realestateagent #propertymanagement When you were investing in real estate, I studied the blade. When you were having open houses, I mastered the blockchain. While you wasted your days at the bank in pursuit of equity, I cultivated inner strength. And now that the world is on fire and the barbarians are at the gate you have the audacity to come to me for rent. It's free! Real estate! We're giving you land! It's free. We're giving you a house. It's real estate. Free. It's a free house for you, Jim. This is free real estate! You gotta bring furniture, but the house is free! Two bedrooms, no rugs. It's free! Duro.
In the last episode, I talked about our visit to London - all the things we saw and did there. This episode is about our second leg and in my opinion, the best part of our trip - Paris!!! This city has been on my list to visit for so long, and to me, it was everything. That first view of the Eiffel tower, that breathtaking, incredible, marvelous, building. First, the way we got there, a train. This train is special though. It took us from London to Paris below the English Channel between The United Kingdom and France. The train goes through an underwater tunnel called the Chunnel. When we arrived, we dropped our bags to our hotel, and headed to Montemartre. It is a hilltop village in Paris. It is really fun to walk around and hang out in. We took a funicular up to the Basilica of Sacré Coeur de Montmartre, simply known as Sacré-Cœur. It is a Roman Catholic church in Paris dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Around the chapel, you can get pretty awesome views of Paris. It is famous for it's sunset views, but we only had a couple of days and we didn't stay for the sunset. Next time! Then, we walked back down into Montmartre, and got some delicious ice cream from a place called Bachir. Also, we got 2 really nice sandwiches on baguettes, REALLYYYY GOOD! The service was awesome, and ice cream was better. They cover your ice cream in pistachios to give it a nice pistachio flavor. Also, the ice cream itself was perfect. I got some delicious macaroons from McDonalds as well! Can you believe it? Macaroons from McD? We hung around our hotel taking the views of the tower in, and then at 10 PM watched the light show. It was sooo pretty, but it only lasted for a couple of minutes. The next day, we went to the Arc de Triomph. It is a very famous monument commemorating French soldiers in many wars. We then walked through Champs-Elysees - a very impressive road that has many expensive stores and brands. We then took a tour up the Eiffel tower. Definitely recommend having an hourish to spend at the gardens near the tower. The tour helped us gain some fun facts. We learned that there are 72 names of scientists listed on the borders of the tower. Also, the tower was never meant to be permanent. It was only built by Gustave Eiffel for the 100 year anniversary of the French revolution at the 1889 world fair. When they decided to add equipment at the top to transmit wireless signals, it increased its life span. Today, it is also used for broadcasting and radio and TV shows. Also, Gustave built a secret room at the top for him to go up when he wanted to be alone. The views of Paris were breathtaking. Amazing. We went up to the top, which is 1665 steps from the ground. Then, once again, we had some amazing ice cream. Instead of taking the elevators, we used the stairs. Be aware, there are a lot, 674. Then river boat cruise on the river Seine. It was a perfect way to see a lot of things in Paris that we wouldn't get around to. We saw Notre Dame, the Louvre, and so much more beautiful architecture. We didn't go inside the Louvre because it requires lots of time, but there is always a next time! We ended that wonderful day with dinner by the tower and the light show again, at 10 PM. Let me just say the food there is delicious!! The next day we were all tired from traveling so we decided to take a more relaxed day, and just slept in and walked around the park near our hotel. Near our hotel, was a replica of the Statue Of Liberty on the Seine river, so we took pictures around there as well. Fun fact is that the next Olympic games are going to happen in Paris, and different sports are at different famous monuments. And the opening ceremony will be held on the Seine river. So, there was a lot of construction! Have you been to Paris? What was your favorite part? Email me: RiyaRamblings@gmail.com, and you'll get a shoutout!

In this episode we review the Great British Baking Show (GBBO) "Stand Up to Cancer" Celebrities edition Season 7, E1. The contestants are John Lithgow (actor), Jon Richardson (comedian), Russell Brand (activist and actor), and Hannah Cockroft (paralympian). We start off with our own antics. Sheldon's salted butter shortbreads were a hit, and this week he tackles macarOOns - this is a super easy cookie that is great for family time. He went "chocolate" variety and had a little trick to make sure he got a decent bake. Alison - she had an adventure! it was off to oklahoma City for a lovely macaron class that her husband gifted her for her anniversary. first - we hear about how OKC is a bit of a mess for driving. This story is fun in itself. When she gets to the class, alison had some goals to learn about certain parts of the macaron making process. She did achieve these goals and I just have to say that the product she produced looked AMAZING!! there were stories though - this is why Alison is so fun when telling stories. The teacher ... well... she maybe took things a bit TOO basic in some of the discussion. She also asked if anyone had ever heard of "The Great British Baking Show".... uh... yes ma'am. Alsion talks about some of the key things she wanted to learn and why they are important. Then to the episode! John Lithgow was a delight as we had hoped. We discuss some comments he made in an interview after the show... joking "it was one of the great traumas of my lifetime" hahahah. First bake - the simple "Brownies". They wanted gooey centers - Alison and Sheldon discuss the merits of a gooey brownie - surprise they have differing opinions. They ask them to be decorated though... we both kind of agree that we don't take the frosted brownie approach. Jon r goes the vegan route - because if he doesn't win "at least he has the moral high ground. We really liked his dry humor. John's were decent - but his icing led to his mouth and hands to be stained in a crazy town looking way. Jon heard his were claggy... that's never good. Russell's were delicious, and Hannah's were decent as well. The technical was a swiss roll - but it was a striped one. Very interesting. it was obvious that some had not whipped the batter enough as it was thin. Also...A lot of food coloring was used. Jon's was the best by far - he was meticulous with instruction. Russell and Hannah's were decent but a little wonky with fillings. John Lithgow's.. was a mess. The showstopper was 3d biscuit scene of your proudest moment. Hannah chose shortbread and her olympic victories, Jon went with savory vegan biscuits and his grad school play, John Lithgow went gingerbread 9how very American) and his performance as Churchill in The Crown (which Alison says is AMAZING) and then there was Russell. We had both been skeptical of his participation ... he can be a bit wild and controversial. We were concerned he would make it too much about him and to "shock". The first 2 events had been good - he was part of the fun and baking well. In the showstopper... he just made it awkward. He could have laid out the birth of his child in a lot of fun ways... he went way to the "shock factor" way. We just didn't dig it. But it tasted good and the judges went with it, scoring him the overall victory. We weren't super excited about it... but overall the episode was a lot of fun until that part. Next week is a bit up in the air due to some work schedule stuff - but the plan is either Celebrities S8 E4 which featured the new Host Alison Hammond, or Sheldon will fly solo and take on a technical challenge. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate your support! Tell your friends :-)

In this episode, I have a real and open conversation about what motherhood has looked like not only for me but for my friend Katy Harrell, who runs the Mumu and Macaroons Instagram account. She talks candidly about mental health, her postpartum body, and the real struggles a lot of us face but don't always feel comfortable talking about. I talk to Katy about young motherhood, how she built her platform, and why it is so important to destigmatize mental health and postpartum recovery. I hope you enjoy this conversation around the highs and lows of motherhood!
