fWotD Episode 2743: Starship Troopers (film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 7 November 2024 is Starship Troopers (film).Starship Troopers is a 1997 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier, based on the 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein. Set in the 23rd century, the story follows teenager Johnny Rico and his comrades as they serve in the military of the United Citizen Federation, an Earth-based world government engaged in an interstellar war against an alien species known as the Arachnids. The film stars Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside.Development of Starship Troopers began in 1991 as Bug Hunt at Outpost 7, written by Neumeier. After recognizing similarities between Neumeier's script and Heinlein's book, producer Jon Davison suggested aligning the script more closely with the novel to garner greater interest from studio executives. Despite these efforts development was slow, with studios hesitant to fund the costly project right up to the start of filming. Principal photography took place between April and October 1996 on a $100–110 million budget, of which nearly half was spent on the extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI) and practical effects required to vivify the Arachnid creatures.Released on November 7, 1997, Starship Troopers faced critical backlash, with reviewers interpreting the film as endorsing fascism and disparaging its violence and cast performances. Despite initial box office success, collections slowed down amid negative reviews and unfavorable word of mouth, culminating in a $121 million total gross against its budget, which made it the 34th-highest-grossing film of 1997. The disappointing performance of Starship Troopers was blamed, in part, on competition from a high number of successful or anticipated science fiction and genre films released that year, its satire and violence failing to connect with mainstream audiences, and ineffective marketing.Since its release, Starship Troopers has been critically re-evaluated and is now considered a cult classic and a prescient satire of fascism and authoritarian governance that has grown in relevancy. The film launched a multimedia franchise that includes four sequels—Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004), Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008), Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012), and Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (2017)—as well as a 1999 animated television series, video games, comics, and a variety of merchandise. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 15:06 UTC on Friday, 8 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Starship Troopers (film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

More effort doesn't necessarily mean better. There's always a smarter way to work in the arts. Patrick Muldoon grew up in San Pedro, 20 miles south of Hollywood. His father was a lawyer who dreamed of starting the Muldoon & Muldoon Law Firm, but after his first acting class, Patrick knew he would never be a lawyer; he wanted to be an actor. Patrick landed huge parts early in his career; he started in "Days of Our Lives" and "Melrose Place," and he famously got his brains sucked in the cult classic "Starship Troopers." He starred in over 50 productions for film and television, and in 2008, Patrick took his first steps as an Executive Producer. As a producer, he was involved in multiple projects for megastars like Gerrard Butler, Salma Hayek, Martin Sheen, Mena Suvari, and Jeniffer Garner. More recently, Patrick produced and starred in "The Comeback Trail" alongside Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones, Morgan Freeman, Zack Braff, and Eddie Griffin. In this episode, Patrick talks about the moment he realized he wanted to be an actor, his first acting job, and how he dealt with the fame that came early in his career. He also shares his approach to acting, how he gets ready before a scene or an audition, and how he dealt with rejection throughout his career. We also talk about fear and how actors can use it as fuel for performing better, Patrick's transition to the production side of Hollywood, what it takes to become a producer in the filming industry, and much more. Tune in to Episode 88 of Hollywood Dream Maker to hear Patrick's views on the difference between being hardworking and doing things the hard way. Each year, people clamor for Anne's "12 Days of Muldoon" list. In honor of that list (coming soon to our IG page), we have reviewed a Muldoon/Denise Richards TV movie, "A Christmas Reunion". The plot may sound familiar: big city gal returns home to revive the bakery her beloved aunt left to her though she has no baking skills and her aunt didn't bother to give her any notice that she was dying. Add to that, one Patrick Muldoon, her ex-boyfriend who (spoiler alert) was left as co-owner of the aforementioned bakery and flour will fly. You've got to hand it to these Muldoon movies, there is no shortage of things to talk about - and we do. Plus, we talk about the monastery left without any monks for a very surprising reason. The woman who faked labor to force a plane to land. And that KPop star you love - is she/he human or riding the AI wave? We'll break it all down. This one had us laughing - let us know if it brings you merriment. Thanks for listening! anne & crissy --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/crissy-shropshire/message

Remember in 2005 when pictures were published of Brad Pitt on an African beach with Angelina Jolie while he was still married to Jennifer Aniston? You'll never guess who tipped off the paparazzi to get that shot. And how you would feel if you fiancé proposed with the ring of his former fiancé? And would you have the keys to your car surgically implanted into your hand? These are the burning questions we answer before things really heat up with our movie of the week, "The Chaos Experiment" (also known as, "The Steam Experiment" depending on where you view it - the sure sign of a quality film.) At "That's Outrageous" we have been neglecting the film canon of our patron saint, Patrick Muldoon for far too long. So when Anne stumbled upon this 2009 film, only available on Amazon, she not only had to see it, she had to buy 2 of the last 5 copies (act fast to get one of those precious remaining 3). Along with Muldoon, the cast includes Kilmer, Roberts (as in Eric, not Julia) and Armand Assante. There's much to discuss about this film that features a mentally disturbed doomsday believer (or is he a scientist?) who throws 6 sexy singles into a steam room to prove that the world is on an irreversible course with annihilation via climate change. I mean, what more could you want from 90 mins? If Kilmer is right and the end of the world is near, you'll want to hear this episode before it's too late! Kris and Preston find themselves having to work with Patrick Muldoon's hair to break up a diamond heist in Jakarta. Do they ever realize their unstated attraction? Does the US government see rewards for sending a high school teacher as a double agent? Can Richard Norton get his pants higher? No to all. While Rage and Honor was a bit of a disappointment for its under utilized shenanigans, the sequel manages to go all in. Its not that they turned the amps to 11 because this feels like its own standalone piece that's unrelated in all ways to its predecessor. Tonally different and chock full of nanners, this is an absolute blast from start to finish. It starts with Cynthia Rothrock smashing her co-workers balls and ends with Patrick Muldoon falling off a crane in comedic fashion and never lets off the gas throughout. While its high nanners, its also a hell of a riffer. This is a great Sunday with the buds movie as the "plot" is paper thin and so requires little attention. When you're not lampooning the film, the film lampoons itself for you. Its like a metronome was running throughout because this thing is on beat. Its tempo is perfect and not a dry second exists. Rage and Honor 2 is likely Rothrock's best film and belongs on anyone's Year in Review list. Its top notch and shouldn't be missed by any of our fans and their friends.

As the world begins to open up, us humans are getting out and getting into some interesting situations. Case in point, the US Congressman who thought a storage bin in the basement of the Capitol would make fine lodgings for his son. Or the woman who was so desperate to get new followers to her Instagram account that she impersonated a high schooler to pass out paper fliers on campus. Or the woman who found a way to solve the problem of dirty dishes by using her countertop as one big plate. Who's hungry? Plus the irrepressible Patrick Muldoon incorporates physical comedy into his film, "A Horse's Tale". Oh Muldoon, only you could play an accountant tasked with saving a horse farm during Christmas. If I could only count the number of times my accountant has come from Christmas dinner. In what sounds like the plot of a Patrick Muldoon movie, a woman gave birth on an airplane in the middle of an oceanic flight. But the real kicker here was - she didn't even know she was pregnant. Plus, twin girls get their Christmas wish list fulfilled by a stranger 600 miles away and a couple of policemen get way more than they bargained for when called to the scene of Kid Rock's Big Honky Tonk Rock 'n Roll Steakhouse. And Anne's son, Nick joins us for a walk down memory lane of "Mortal Kombat" kills. It's always a treat to listen to a mother and son bond over an ominous voice commanding would-be assassins to "finish him!" Then we're shown where the bugs have sent a meteor towards earth, which is blown up, next, we're shown Klendathu, the bugs home system, and how the bugs have an endless supply of meteorites to hurl at Earth and must be destroyed. We're then taken live to the invasion. The presenter is eaten by a bug, and two other army guys. It cuts to black, and we're shown 1 year earlier. In a classroom Rico is caught drawing and we hear some history, the failure of democracy and how social scientist brought the planet to the brink of collapse, veterans took control, imposed stability. Only citizens are allow to vote. Voting is exorcising political violence and violence is the supreme authority from which all authority is derived. They're in high school. They check their math scores, but Rico didn't do well. Next they're shown dissecting a bug, and we're told they can colonize planets by hurling their spawn into space. Carl, shown to working on federal psychic program, working with Rico and shows some psychic ability with his pet ferret. They're then shown playing some sort of futuristic football game, Zander hits on Carmen, and Rico wins it at the last second. Ricos family is very well off and after an argument if he'll join for service, his parents bribe him not to, with a trip. At the dance Diz comes on to Rico heavily, again. He speaks to Rasczak, and dances with Carmen. Rico, Carmen and Carl are shown taking an oath to the Federation for service. Rico argues with his parents again and he leaves. At the transport hub, Rico tells Carmen he loves her, and she doesn't reciprocate. S:-"Service guarantees citizenship"... Right from the off some political plays.-It shows the galaxy, our solar system and the bugs home system. The milky way is 105.7K light years across, even just half way, it would take 50K light years to reach, a meteor would take millions of years to travel that far.-Oldest high schoolers EVER (Casper Van Dein was 29 and Denise Richards was 26, when making this movie)-The uniforms are adidas... Another news brief, citizens rule, a murderer tried and convicted, the execution to be broadcast the same day, a psychic commercial, then a bug eating a cow and how a human colony of Mormon extremists, at Port Joe Smith, was attached and killed by bugs. Next, Rico is shown at drill, with Clancy Browns, Zim. Some comradery is starting to build and Diz shows up. They're shown training at boot, trying to make squad leader. Shower scene and exposition of why they all joined up. Some banter in the bunk, and we're shown Carmen in pilot training on the moon. Zander, from the football game, is her assistant instructor. She takes the ship out with some close calls. Back with Rico, runs through a training exercise and becomes squad leader. Carmen sends Rico a dear John... video. He's shown running a live fire exercise that gets a cadet killed when trying to fix his helmet. Rico then receives administrative punishment and is publicly whipped 10 times. Carmen on the bridge of the ship and Zander is hitting on her when an asteroid appears out of nowhere and nearly destroys the ship. Rico is shown to be leaving the mobile infantry, and while on a call with his parents, is strangely disconnected. As he's walking down washout lane, there is a commotion and a news flash shows the asteroid has hit Buenos Aires, where Rico and Diz are from. Over 8+M dead and 12+M injured. Ricos exit papers are destroyed and he stays.S:-The one girl in the shower who says she wants to have babies, and it's easier to get the permissions with service. Sounds fun.-The graphics are still REALLY good. It's a good blend of practical and CGI. Not perfect, but really good.-Just all the cheesy, sci-fi tropes... but its also SO obvious with them as well. the satire is strong.-The mail call with the tiny CD.. Noice.-Any satirical significance to the black officer whipping Rico?-AT&T global communications with Ricos parents Another propaganda reel. "The only good bug, is a dead bug"... The federal council is shown declaring war: humans DOMINATE the galaxy. Carl shows us that while blowing off a bug limb is ok, they're still 86% effective, and says to aim to the nervestem. Children are shown stomping on bugs and "doing their part". It cuts live to a space station and Rico and the other troopers are interviewed. As they go to get a tattoo, Carmen sees Rico, and they talk Zander shows up and they fight. Rico, Diz, and the others get tattoos. Troopers load up and are dropped in. The ships are also shown to be taking damage with bad intel, and as Carmen tries to pilot away, a fireball erupts and they cut away to the troopers attacking. The plasma is coming from giant bugs, which they immediately 'nuke'. Diz asks Ace what to do, he freezes, and Rico tells them to kill them all. We see the reporter from the opening of the movie, but what's happening on the planet, behind the camera. Rico is injured and the last we see is a camera shot down a bugs throat. Another news broadcast, very somber. 100,00 dead in 1 hour. The marshal resigns, to fight the bug, we must understand the bug. Scientists argue for bug intelligence. Carmen is shown to be alive, and the fleet is decimated. She searches and finds Rico is listed KIA. He's shown in some tank, getting his leg repaired. Rico, Diz and Ace are joining a new squad, the roughnecks. The Lt. is shown to be Rasczak, from their high school.S:-Definitely see the Nazi-esque uniforms-Reminds me of Mao Zedong and the killing of the sparrows.-The death from above and the flexed bicep... Jeez-The song that plays when Carmen and Rico meet up again... it's the only song with lyrics, and very 90's and everytime I hear it, all I can think is: go for it, Angus... Jets are flying over and firebombing bugs, with the mobile infantry troopers mopping up afterwards. Watkins REALLY gets a bug, and is sprayed for it. They find a bug hole and nuke it. As the run to assist another squad, a huge bug comes up from behind them and blows fire. Rico jumps on its back, shoots a hole in it, and throws a grenade. Afterwards, Rasczak promotes him to Corporal, and Diz to squad leader. Rasczak give the squad beer and entertainment, as they dance and drink, Diz and Rico finally get together. She tells Rico she loves him, and he doesn't say it back, when they're interrupted and told they have to go to a distress signal. As they move, the comms and sgt gets snatched by a flying bug, Rasczak shoots him and says he expects the same from everyone else. Rico is promoted to acting sergeant. Everyone is dead at the base, they find an officer with their brains sucked out. They found a general hiding, and he reveals the bugs are intelligent trying to learn about humans to kill them. The trap is sprung and thousands of bugs swarm the base. The flying bugs come in and decapitate a few soldiers, one shot and crashing, takes out the cowardly general. They call for extraction as they're being overrun. They retreat into the compound and a transport ship lands as their retreating, Rasczak gets sucked underground and loses his legs, he tells Rico, you know what to do and Rico shoots him. A big flame bug comes up and Diz lobs a grenade into its mouth, but a bug comes up behind her and stabs her. Another firebug busts through the wall as the transport ship takes off and we see thousands of bugs swarming. Rico holds Diz as she dies very dramatically, and that it's ok because she got to him. Rico asks for them to bomb the planet, and is denied, but Carmen sees he is alive and she seems very forlorn. Rico speaks at Diz's funeral. Carl arrives and tells them they know of a brain bug on the planet and they're going back to get it. he's promoted again to Lt. Carmen tells him to take care, and he replies he'll see her again.S:-The guy getting sprayed with bug blood... Who gets to do that?-Just all the over acting. But still, the effects are pretty good. The fighting is compelling.Back on the planet, there is a lot of activity. Rico greets the new recruits, who he refers to as kids, with the same speech Rasczak gave when he joined, and the roughnecks are re-named Ricos Roughnecks. Carmen's ship is cut in half by a plasma hit; they barely make it to an escape pod, when the ship is hit with another plasma hit. They are forced crash land on the planet, Rico makes contact with her as they crash into a cave. Bugs immediately show up and close in. They stab Zander through the leg and Carmen through her shoulder. Rico cancels the rescue op, but they're shown to be alive. As Rico is exploring the caves, he gets some sort of intuition that Carmen is alive, and they go off mission to find her. The brain bug approaches and stabs Zander in the head, and sucks his brains out. As it's about to get Carmen, she cuts off the impaler, as Rico comes in holding a nuke. The brain bug exits and the others wait to attack until it's gone. Watkins is injured and takes the nuke. He kills as many as he can when the nuke goes off, giving Rico, Ace and Carmen time to escape. As they exit the cave, everyone is shown to be celebrating because htey captured thye brain bug. Carl approaches the bug and announces it's afraid. everyone rejoices. It's revealed Carl "told" Rico where to find her, but he says that was classified. He also reveals that Zim, the drill instructor, who is now a private, captured the brain bug. It cuts to another newsreel talking about what mysteries the brain bug will reveal. The narrators tells us the federation needs recruits, like captain carmen, Ace, and Lt. Rico. Writing on the screen, "They'll keep fighting...and they'll win!" Fade to black.S:-When the 'nuke' goes off... Obviously its a small tactical nuke, but no way you can out run it in a cave.-Brain bug mouth is an upside down vagina-All of the newsreels show violence towards the bugs, even for kids, and it desensitizes you to their plight. They're obviously an organized, intelligent species, but no one cares, even when in the final news reel, something is jammed into its mouth and it's in pain. It's like the nazis and jews. Webpage: https://theguysreview.simplecast.comEM: theguysreviewpod@gmail.comIG: @TheGuysReviewPodTwitter: @The_GuysReviewFB: https://facebook.com/TheGuysReviewPod/

You know, sometimes things don't always work out the way you planned them. Sometimes it ends up going to shit, but if you are broadcast masters like us, you just find a way to pump out unbelievable content regardless of the circumstances. The universe gifted us a last minute rescheduling, and we decided to do a Quick Cast. Which leads us to our movie this week, Stigmata. This was pretty clearly Patricia Arquette's best work, and she had some weird chemistry with Gabriel Byrne, which just works somehow. Billy Corgan provides the music (along with some very special friends that we talk about in detail during the pod), and Mike channels his inner holy spirit and crushes the games segment of the show.   This movie is about *SPOILER ALERT* a woman who is experiencing all of the afflictions of the Stigmata, and Byrne is a Vatican investigator sent to determine the legitimacy of the claim. Not only is it legit, but it's the most insane case ever recorded, and it points to a giant conspiracy within the church. Jonathan Pryce, Enrico Colantoni, and Dick Latessa all provide great characters within the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy , while Nia Long, Portia de Rossi, and Patrick Muldoon provide a heavy dose of 90's nostalgia. The recast itself may technically count as blasphemy, so this is one you don't want to miss.   Thanks for listening, everyone! We're going to be starting up our Roundtable series again this winter, so reach out to us with any suggestions for topics you want us to talk about.
