During the week that marked the three-year anniversary of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Donald Trump met with a flurry of world leaders to discuss ending the war, as well as announcing a potential commercial deal with Ukraine over mineral resources. Meanwhile, the U.S. voted against a U.N. resolution condemning Moscow's actions even as Ukrainian forces fought on to expel Russians from their territory. So what does all the activity mean for the future of the conflict and is there any end in sight? On this episode of Free Expression, military historian and analyst Fred Kagan tells Gerry Baker why Vladimir Putin is the only world leader who doesn't want the war to end, reviews the latest conditions on the battlefield, and argues the Trump administration should not be willing to give concessions to Russia in the name of peace nor give up on NATO. The cavalry has come over the hill and it's being led by Matt Zarb Cousin of all people! Gambling reformer says Take Affordability Checks Off British Racing: High profile gambling reform campaigner stands up for British Horseracing The man who led the campaign against FOBTs says: “It's time for racing to get the target off its back and cut the cord with online casino. Matt Zarb Cousin says that a separate wallet and platform for horseracing would exempt the sport from affordability checks — and would have the support of campaigners. The impact of the affordability checks, which the gambling industry has imposed on horseracing fans, is clearly shown in the latest official figures from the UK Gambling Commission. Turnover is down by £3.2B — a fall of 28% since the intrusive and offensive requests for personal financial details from punters were introduced. Meanwhile during the same period turnover for online casino has rocketed in the opposite direction. Not all gambling products cause the same levels of harm and horseracing punters are being subjected to the protections needed for much more addictive non-skilled products like online slots. Despite years of virtual signalling by the “supposed friends of the sport” no-one has properly made the case for an exemption from affordability checks for horseracing. The British Horseracing Authority has never advocated on behalf of the racehorse owners and punters, who ultimately pay their wages, by proposing to extricate racing from online casino. Instead, those supposedly lobbying for racing's interests have argued against affordability checks, despite them being needed to curtail rampant online slots and casino growth which is coming at the expense of racing revenue. Under the proposal advanced by Matt Zarb-Cousin, horseracing customers of betting companies would be exempt from affordability checks as betting would be offered on a different platform to online casino with a separate wallet, subject to a system of regulation that acknowledges a 300 year old national heritage sport should not be subjected to the financial risk checks needed for the casino product. Funds would be completely ring-fenced from other gambling products and money would remain in the racing eco system, as cross-promotion to products like online casino would be constrained.
Send us a Text Message.1938 was the year when the tide of Hitler's ambition should have broken against widespread international and internal opposition.Instead, it was the year when his tsunami was unleashed.By deft manoeuvres, he isolated Austria, and in March incorporated it into the German Reich. He then turned his attention to Czechoslovakia. The Nazis fomented unrest in the Sudetenland, and Hitler demanded its return to the German Reich. He ordered his generals to prepare for invasion. But the leaders of the German Army were not prepared to accept this, and began preparing a coup. They repeatedly told the British government of their plans, and urged Chamberlain to stand firm against Hitler's demands. Instead, in a series of trips to Germany, Chamberlain capitulated to Hitler's demands, ceding the Sudetenland, with Czechoslovakia's best defences and industrial wealth, to the German Reich. Chamberlain boasted that he had brought ‘peace for our time'.In March 1939, Hitler swallowed up the rest of Czechoslovakia, and Chamberlain was exposed as having drastically misread the German Führer. When the British and French guaranteed Poland's borders, Hitler did not believe them. Once again the German resistance sought assurances from the British that they would stand firm – but they could no longer promise a coup.On 1 September 1939 Nazi Germany invaded Poland, and the Second World War began. It took two days for Britain and France to act in accordance with their guarantee and declare war – but then they did nothing to support Poland. What now for France? For Britain? And what hope remained for Germans who opposed the Nazi regime?Written and narrated by Brian WaltersOriginal music, editing and sound design by the amazing Sam LoyEpisode TranscriptA full transcript of the episode is available hereRead the book TREASONYou can read more about Claus von Stauffenberg and the German resistance to Hitler, in the book Treason by Brian Walters. For those with iPads, Treason is available as an interactive Apple Book here. The hard copy can be bought here.If you live out of Australia, the hard copy is best purchased from Blurb. There is also a Kindle version.ResourcesFor a list of the creative commons music and sound effects used in this episode, head here. Finally …If you liked the episode, please share it: the episode link is here. And you can help us by writing a brief review and giving us a (five star!) rating.By all means contact me, Brian Walters, by email on walters@vicbar.com.au TREASON: Claus von Stauffenberg and the plot to kill Hitler
The idea of ‘Peace in our Time' has become synonymous with the failure to achieve it. The image of Neville Chamberlain waving a piece of paper signed by Adolph Hitler has gone down in history as both a humiliation and a warning against appeasement. And yet surely ‘Peace in our time' is our goal. Our goal is to be able to look back on war in the same way that we now look back on slavery. With an understanding that it was wrong, that there are still instances of it today. But for most of us the arguments for or against it have been confined to the dustbin of history. That is how we should be looking at war. And yet here we are today with over 30 armed conflicts between nations going on around the world. And people thinking that it is OK to send missiles and bombs halfway around the world to settle scores. There has to be a better way. And what can we do to stop it? Support the Show.

In March 1938, Germany declared its annexation of Austria. Soon after, Hitler demanded that the Sudetenland, an area of Czechoslovakia with a heavy German population, also be added to the Reich. On 15 September, Hitler met with the leaders of Great Britain and France, signing the Munich Agreement, in which the western Allies formally recognized Hitler's territorial expansion. Hitler declared the Sudetenland to be "the last territorial demand I have to make in Europe." But was it? Join Sean and James and you will find out!

We are in week 3 of our series, Sit, Walk, Stand, where we are looking at the position, practice and power of those who are in Christ. Positionally we are seated with Christ in heavenly places. In practice we are to walk, or live in such a way that brings honor and glory to the name of Jesus. And we are to stand in the power of that name above all names, Jesus, who's incomparable power is at work in us to stand in faith until the end.

In the wake of Joe Biden's disastrous surrender of Afghanistan to the jihadist Taliban, it's hard to believe that anyone still thinks we can unilaterally end an “endless” war. Yet, some in Congress are pressing for a “peace agreement” to be concluded with North Korea – as if that would actually terminate the Korean War, rather than invite its violent resumption. This delusion is at the core of H.R. 3446, the so-called “Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act.” Its sponsors evidently believe North Korea can be trusted to honor such an accord, respect human rights and reunify with South Korea like East Germany did in effectively surrendering to its western counterpart. Such an agreement will, instead, likely trigger the removal of U.S. forces that have deterred a devastating Korean War 2.0 – and the South's forced submission. Thanks, but no thanks. This is Frank Gaffney.
