We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Canadian national team, Copa America, and Euro 2024 chat, and we're joined once again this week by Felipe Vallejo to talk about it all. It was a two-game home stand for the Whitecaps this week and to quote Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, you win some and you lose some, and I've lost the will to lose. That about sums up how I feel about the 'Caps home form, where they've now dropped 16 points so far this season. We look at the main talking points coming out of the win over Kansas City and the loss in the seven-goal thriller to Houston, including the concerning knee injury to their talismanic captain Ryan Gauld. The MLS transfer window is open. The Whitecaps rumours haven't been plentiful but the club will definitely be making some additions, but may also be losing some players. We look at the apparent imminent arrival of Colombian defender Edier Ocampo and the possible departures of Fafa Picault and Javain Brown, plus we look at the new MLS roster rules and how they may impact the Whitecaps in this transfer window and beyond. And there's still time to talk Canadian Premier League, League1 BC, and the Canadian national teams. Plus Cork band The Frank and Walters continue as Album of the Month, we take you back to 1974, and we've an England Euros 2024 song in Wavelength now that they didn't win it and aren't quite as insufferable!

Kaci Rock chats to me about how she got started in boxing at only 6 years of age. Kaci is the daughter of Irish boxing legend, Jim Rock and its fair to say he was not all for her getting into boxing initially. When it was clear boxing was not just a faze and she had the minerals to become a fighter, he is now of course her biggest supporter. Kaci also chats about the early days as an amateur and how Katie Taylor was always a big inspiration, even giving her some old boxing gear to use from time to time. Kaci eventually started to see her hard work pay off and would go on to win 7 Irish titles at various levels. She would win an Irish elite title in 2021 and then claim a European bronze medal at the U22 championships in 2022. Kaci has recently just missed out on being selected for the Olympic qualifiers in 2024 and talks about her plans for the future. Outside of boxing Kaci is not your typical boxer. She has various other interests and is balancing her studies at university alongside her boxing career. Something tells me we might be hearing more from Kaci both inside and outside of the ring.

In this episode of the Designated Players Podcast, we're talking about the hottest topics in MLS in recent news with talks of MLS 2 teams rebranding with local teams, followed by MLS' recent performances (or lack thereof) in CONCACAF Champions Cup, and finally ending with the potential new rule change decoupling the DP tag with the U22 initiative. Guest Sarah Howald Hughes, Dartmouth '96, started playing hockey at age seven, at least a year after she wanted to. She was told girls couldn't play in the league that young. When she was eligible she kept playing—with the boys—until going off to high school for junior and senior year, setting her sights on playing at the college level. Hockey got her to Dartmouth, which she ended up loving, dispite the long hard hours of training, practicing and competing as a two-sport athelete. Though a formidable javelin thrower, she shone on the ice. As a college sporting career studded with Ivy League championships and All-Ivy recognition came to a close, she didn't want her time in a rink to end. Instead of pursuing continued playing opportunities, however, she wanted to be a coach. The problem was, a starting coaching job was going to pay little more than a volunteer role. So she opted to go back to school for an education degree, which would put her on a more secure path toward a teaching job with a coaching assignment. When she finished the degree, though, and was offered the teaching job in a small town in Saskatchewan, she was also offered—on the same day—another chance at a University coaching position. Having turned the dream down once, she wasn't about to turn it down twice, even with the salary disparity. More than two decades later, she has built her program and lived the dream. In this episode, find out from Sarah how seeing things from both sides can make you appreciate where you are…on ROADS TAKEN...with Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestSarah Howald Hodges has been the head coach for the University of Regina Cougars women's hockey program in Saskatchewan for more than two decades. She has also coached for the Canadian National's U18 and U22 teams in addition to leading other development efforts for the sport. In her playing days at Dartmouth, she was on two Ivy League Championship teams, was named first team All-Ivy, and was one of the co-captains our senior year. She led her team in points for two of the four seasons, and is still among the top-ten leaders in career goals in the program's history. She also threw a mean javelin. She lives in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, with her husband and two hockey-playing daughters. Ryan Walters, Matthew Binns, and Michael Redmond run the rule over the top two divisions as the calendar ticks over to May. In the first segment, the three dive into the wild world of K League 2 where FC Anyang remain at the top and pre-season favourites Gimcheon Sangmu remain outside a playoff position. They also discuss Jeju United's strong return to the top flight and how they're getting results. The second segment sees FC Seoul under the microscope again to assess whether or not this may be their dreaded 2018 season all over again. Paul Neat then joins to chat with Dajeon Hana Citizen midfielder Edinho about his time in Korea and the club's expectations this season. The show rolls on with the third segment looking at Suwon FC's massive overhaul this winter and it's... less than desirable results. Finally, youth players take centre stage not just because of the early U22 substitutions, but also because some youngsters have made a name for themselves quite early on in 2021. Lastly, the Eulji Lewis Mailbag sees questions ranging from roster rules to potential transfers this summer and everything in between. All that and more in this edition of the K League United Podcast!

After a long, cold winter, regular hosts Ryan Walters, Matthew Binns, and Peter Hampshire finally have some K League action to discuss! Along with writers across the country, they pick five of the most intriguing storylines from the opening round to discuss in depth. The first segment begins with Matthew and Peter's post match discussion in Jeonju where defending champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors got their campaign off to a winning start. But was it convincing? Hopping back to the Bunker, Michael Redmond joins to discuss Seoul E-Land's thumping 3-0 win over Busan IPark for their first ever opening day victory. Before departing, Michael also helps break down FC Anyang's shock win over promotion hopefuls Gyeongnam FC. The second segment begins in Ulsan where Ryan is joined post-match by a jubilant Dan Croydon to go over Ulsan Hyundai's 5-0 thrashing of Gangwon FC and whether or not there's much to take away from a match that pivoted on a red card. For the fifth and final topic, the hosts discuss the new U22 rule in depth and whether or not its current implementation is what the rule was designed for. Lastly, the Eulji Lewis Mailbag is back! Questions range from executive resume omissions to regretting predictions after round 1 and everything in between. All that and more in this edition of the K League United Podcast!

The latest AFTN Soccer Show is out for another packed show of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and Canadian Premier League chat. It's been pretty quiet in Whitecapsland, so that surely means a shorter show. We thought that too, but turns out we ended up with a two and a half hourer instead as we turned our attentions to other matters. AFTN writer Jake McGrail joins us to look at the main Whitecaps talking points of the week and share his thoughts on last season, the offseason, and the season to come. Plus we look at MLS' new U22 player initiative and the convoluted rules that seem to surround it. But while it's been quiet in Vancouver, the same can't be said in Montreal and we take a bit of time to delve into all the happenings out east from the continuing rebrand to new signings to possibly losing their head coach just before the season begins. Will Thierry Henry be heading to Bournemouth to become manager there? Where does that leave Montreal this close to the start of the season and just who has been behind the club's numerous signings this offseason? We also hear from two of them, striker Bjørn Johnsen and a player very well known to Whitecaps fans, Erik Hurtado about signing for Montreal and more. All of this plus we travel back in the TARDIS with Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director Axel Schuster to talk about revisiting some football history in our new feature and we talk CPL salaries and how the exemplify the need for the players' union to be recognised. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 03.55: Whitecaps News of the Week 27.52: MLS' new U22 initiative 40.02: Montreal Impact chat 51.46: Erik Hurtado audio and discussion 66.30: Bjørn Johnsen audio and discussion 81.34: Is Thierry Henry heading to Bournemouth and where does that leave Montreal? 94.47: Football Time Travels featuring Axel Schuster 120.43: Wavelength - Vaudeville Smash ft Les Murray - Zinedine Zidane 129.39: CPL player salaries exemplify the need for recognising their union

We start this week’s show with a heavy heart honoring the late Kim Nam-chun. Kim was found in his apartment on October 30th from an apparent suicide according to police. A ceremony was held in his honor the following day at Seoul World Cup Stadium to pay tribute to him ahead of the FC Seoul’s game with Incheon United. In speaking with his teammates and seeing the outpouring of love on social media over the weekend, it’s clear Kim was a popular member of FC Seoul and with other players around the league who he had spent time with at Sangju. All of us at K League United send our most sincerest condolences to Kim Nam-chun's family, friends, and teammates in this difficult time. May he rest in peace. After a break, Ryan Walters is joined by regular co-hosts Matthew Binns and Peter Hampshire to put a lid on the 2020 K League 1 season. They start with Final A where Jeonbuk was once again crowned champions for a record-breaking fourth straight time. The three go over just how wrong their pre-season predictions were, the biggest surprise in Final A, biggest disappointment, and look into the future and guess whether each team will finish higher or lower in 2021. Ryan, Matt, and Peter rinse and repeat for Final B where both Incheon and Seongnam won back to back games to end the season on a high and avoid relegation. After answering a few early mailbag questions about Incheon's chances of avoiding the same story next season and Busan's need to rebuild, Paul Neat joins in with an interview with Incheon United's Stefan Mugoša. They discuss the Mariners pulling off another dramatic escape, off season plans, and what's next for the Montenegrin striker. After a brief FA Cup Final preview, the hosts hop into the Eulji Lewis Mailbag. Questions range from what's next for Ulsan to Jeju's chances back in K1, and touch on former U22 players options next season. All that and more in this edition of the K League United Podcast!

A week after putting K1 under the microscope, Ryan Walters, Matthew Binns, and Michael Redmond turn their attention to K League 2 after 11 Rounds. They each pick a team and a player that has impressed in the first few months, with leaders Suwon FC understandably getting a lot of praise. Paul Neat joins once again in the second segment to look at the U22 rule in the second division. He and Matthew discuss the trend of subbing youth players off before half-time, and go team by team once more going over who has and hasn't had a good showing thus far. They also give a clarification on youth wages. Ryan, and Michael return for the third segment to break down what's gone wrong with the underperforming sides in the second division. Pre-season promotion hopefuls Gyeongnam FC get a fair few mentions, but given the ever-changing nature of the second division, few others seemed to feel "earned." Lastly, the Eulji Lewis Mailbag sees questions ranging from Seoul E-Land's promotion chances this and next year, what's gone wrong at Daejeon, and a discussion on just how good An Byong-jun is this season. All that and more in this edition of the K League United Podcast.

Ryan Walters is joined by Peter Hampshire and Todd Wilde once more to assess what they've seen in K League 1 after 11 Rounds. The three each pick a player that has impressed in the first few months, and almost leave out a big name before correcting themselves. They also discuss the teams that have done well for themselves with an emphasis on Kim Tae-wan's Sangju Sangmu. Paul Neat and Matthew Binns take over the second segment to focus on the U22 rule in the top flight. They go team by team from the bottom of the table up and break down which sides have done well developing their youth, which players have stood, and who could stand to get more minutes. Ryan, Peter, and Todd return for the third segment to doll out the bad news and go over the players and teams that have underwhelmed so far. Unsurprisingly Incheon and their Gyeongin Derby rivals FC Seoul get plenty of mentions, but notably so does a prominent Jeonbuk player. Finally, the three hop into the Eulji Lewis Mailbag to answer questions about teams that may bounce back from bad form, and several questions about the men on the sidelines in K1. All that and more in this edition of the K League United Podcast.
