With three napkins filled with the scrawls of locations and weather predictions strewn around her, MaryBeth announced the next likely location for the workshop. Copper Harbor! A discussion and a decision later. We were heading West! MaryBeth had woken up early that morning to find us an opening in the skies so we had a better chance of seeing the Aurora should the conditions arise. The evidence of her hours of meticulously checking multiple weather models & predictions filled the napkins with data written in a legibility only MaryBeth was capable of reading. As she gathered her nearly falling apart napkins she laughed to herself and commented aloud, "See what I mean about rather being a crack addict than an aurora chaser?" Implying that it might be even less crazy to be on crack than participate in the chase she loves best. In this podcast, I share some of the what went wells and could have been betters about last week's Upper Peninsula Aurora Workshop. From weather and aurora chasing, to the sights and waterfalls of the Upper Peninsula and my first chance using a Tiffen Fog Filter to capture Orion in the darkest sky most of us had ever been under, this past week lived up to the Photog Adventures motto of getting out there on an adventure! Sigh...I never ever ever wanted to tell this story. It truly is embarrassing for me and I can’t believe I just put it to permanent record and included it on a podcast! Ugh I am starting to really regret this. BUT I haven’t released a new episode in three weeks so this is coming as a perfect punishment. Also, I have three new announcements that will be explained here mixed with three stories. I won’t say what the announcements are other than to summarize what is coming in this way: Season Four -> NightScaper Nightmare -> The Guild? -> Most Embarrassing moment of 2019 -> The Contest! Enjoy! Here is a great blog talking about the Klakkur Hike so you can understand more what my hike was like: https://fortheloveofwanderlust.com/klakkur-hike-the-faroe-islands/ PS If by chance you got curious why I would go to a conference for computer software that is supposedly going to help me with Photog Adventures, then definitely check out these two links. ONLY SOME of the authors behind MilkyWayPhotographers.com join me on the podcast to share some of their favorite Milky Way Photography tips, stories, articles on MWP.com and their favorite Milky Way locations that they have been in 2019. Aaron Martinez, our famous Pentax representative who casually captures Milky Way with Mountain Lions nearby, lives in Texas but spends most of his Photography time in New Mexico and his favorite spot to get out to is the very nearby Bortle 2 area of City of Rocks! MaryBeth Kiczenski, obsessed Aurora zealot and nicknamed MegaRally, said that her favorite location of 2019 and ALL-TIME was being out with me at Escalante, Utah at Devil’s Garden because of all the options there and how her Metate Arch image came out so well she actually printed it to metal and it hangs proudly in her place! Kirk Keyes, the Managing Editor of MilkyWayPhotographers.com and one of the first ten if not FIVE fans of Photog Adventures, said that his experience at Delicate Arch in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah was his favorite Milky Way Photography experience of 2019! PODCAST UPCOMING RELEASES NOTE: Several Podcast Episodes have been recorded but a confluence of issues with guest and co-host timings, MWP.com website issues where I crashed it updating it for my failed Black Friday sales along with other casualties have pushed things WAY back! But these episodes are ALL COMING OUT THIS WEEK! So stay tuned and stay safe this New Year’s Eve! Happy 2020 and wishing you all the best in the coming year! :D -Aaron

When he started out shooting photos of the Milky Way he used to make shots of the Milky Way. But now his photos are focused on interesting foregrounds with the Milky Way in the background. He discusses his approach to lighting the land, exposure, panoramas, processing, decreasing noise, masking, Photoshop, cameras, and lenses. After Wayne shares all his best photo secrets with us, he then tells us an awesome story about a one of his shots. Like the time he took a photo of a Predator with the Milky Way. For the first time, Brendon has taken Photog Adventures through the Slot Canyons in Escalante. Drew and Brendon hit up Spooky Gulch and Peek-a-Boo Slot. Sharing first impressions of the drive there and the challenges of hiking the area and how they definitely brought too much gear along with them on the hikes. They make Aaron jealous as they describe the many arches down there and a spot that would be just amazing for a vertical Milky Way that we definitely have to do before the season is over! Then after all the waxing poetic and romantic about the amazement of the experience, they describe a harrowing experience where a mother and two little kids frantically approaches them as they are leaving the canyon. This mother split up from her parents and daughter trying to find a way out of the canyon with her two little kids but now the parents and daughter have not made it up yet! It had been three hours since they ran out of water and this woman was scared for the real possibility of losing her family to the elements! Between Drew's Drone and the experience of Mountain Goat Hartely, the guys are able to locate the missing half of the family and give Hartley the exact position to go find this family to rescue them and help them out safely. The description doesn't do the story justice, listen to the podcast, it makes you excited to be a part of humanity hearing how everyone grouped their talents together to rescue this family. Happy Perseids everybody! It is the week of the peak of the annual Perseid Meteor shower. This coming Aug. 11th. 12th and 13th mark the three mornings that will showcase the peak of the Perseids with as many as 50 meteors an hour often more! So how do you get the most out of this opportunity? Today on the Astro Photog Podcast, Aaron goes over advice for those WITH and WITHOUT plans to photograph the meteor shower then ends with a new segment Geek Time in honor of Brendon's Gear Time. In the Astro Primer I give the news most of you already know, it is New Moon week and with that comes great nights EVERY night. The Northern Hemisphere has a vertical Milky Way from the moment full darkness starts up until the Galactic Core sets on you early in the morning. The core sets LONG before the Astronomical Twilight period begins so plan on going out at the beginning of the night. The Southern Hemisphere night begins with the Core high in the sky and then moves into a better position for photography come early morning before the Galactic Core sets beyond the horizon around 4am Perth, Australia time. The highlight of the Astro Primer is the main subject of today's podcast, the Perseid Meteor Shower! One of the year's BEST Meteor Showers is appearing without the moon again and is set to make 2018 a magical time for Meteor Shower photography! The podcast begins with general Meteor viewing tips as given from the EarthSky.org article linked below. The tips are: 1- Find a dark, open sky with as little obstructions that you can get so you can see all the many meteors across the sky 2- Give yourself at least an hour of observing time to see a lot and most importantly, get your eyes adjusted to the darkness of night 3- Know that all meteors all come from a single point in the sky, the radiant 4- Bring a reclining chair and some warm drink of your choice to fully enjoy in massive comfort 5- Be patient! All good things come to those that wait! In the ad today I once again remind and encourage all of you fence sitters thinking about joining us in the Faroe Islands to know that it isn't too late to join us in September! Register your spot here: https://goo.gl/jYZEZd In the second segment I go over tips for your Meteor Shower Photography. The tips are: 1- Wide Angle lens and obviously the largest aperture you have 2- Take a Timelapse and more importantly PRACTICE taking a timelapse before you go out 3- Shutter 30 seconds with 3 seconds interval between each shot for your timelapse settings 4- Battery Grip/Power bank/Goal Zero/Timer to remind you to check your battery. Anything to make sure you capture for hours 5- LOTS of memory card space so you can constantly be capturing so you don't miss a meteor 6- Capture the Foreground during Blue Hour or Light Paint it. Get that Foreground sharp and clean 7- Combine Foreground and your many meteor frames using Photoshop doing your blend of choice Then lastly in our first episode of GEEK TIME I teach the origin of the Perseid Meteor Shower thanks to the Comet Swift-Tuttle and explain the consistency of meteor showers. Heads and Tails features new travel destinations to their audience and show the most interesting things to do and places to visit. All with a pretty cool premise of flipping a coin at the beginning of each adventure and the winner of the coin toss gets an unlimited budget to do things with while the other only gets around $100! They also have a YouTube channel which has 1.3m subscribers. Which is awesome of course, but their TV Show gets 60 Million viewers! Amazed and honored, their producers of the show found Photog Adventures and decided we were the right guys to work with to help one of their Hosts get a Milky Way Timelapse in the world-famous dark skies of Utah! We take Anton and his small filming crew out to Goblin Valley Sunday night for an amazingly clear and beautiful night! In this Podcast we talk about the fun of being on a Travel TV Show, the interesting challenges of having a producer manage the narrative and create scenes and orchestrate everything from when we hand an extra pair of gloves to Anton to when we walk down the hill to our location for Milky Way Photography. Going out on a Saturday to the mini-Grand Canyon of Utah - the Wedge Overlook - for some fun location scouting and filming with the drone should be an easy going uneventful day. Well our trip with Daniel Lindhardt a couple Saturdays ago reminded us why some of you think of Photog Adventures as a Laurel and Hardy act or enjoy it because we are a couple of boneheaded photographers having a blast and you just enjoy our comedy of errors! This Photog MISAdventure starts out with some fun driving through Buckhorn Wash enjoying the Petroglyphs and Pictographs of the Archaic and Fremont Indians in the Barrier Canyon Style panel. But soon it turns into the panicked realization that we just flew our drone out beyond our reach, well at least not without a long hike! Come listen to how that 13-mile hike went and how the search turns out! To start on 2018 really well, we joined Jeff Pedersen, Tim McGowen, Drew Armstrong & Kirk Keyes out in Moab to enjoy never sleeping and lots of Photography! We just missed Ed Shanahan out here, it was really too bad we missed him on this trip but he got an AMAZING sunrise at Mesa Arch that Monday. Jeff and Tim bragged about it allll week long as we never had that amazing of a sunrise at any location but some really great sunsets where the sky just blew up with pink afterglow! We capture the Windows area in Arches National Park both for Landscape Photography and Milky Way Photography as well as Star Trails at Balanced Rock one night. Then Mesa Arch, Deadhorse Point and the Gossips for sunrises. Other than being crazy sick with Bronchitis, it was an amazing trip! To celebrate hitting 50 podcast episodes we hang out with our Admins from the Facebook Listeners Group Daniel Lindhardt, Darrell Harrington, Rob Ryan and Dean Vinson. These guys have become our best friends on the Facebook Group as they have been a part of the Photog Adventures team since December last year! Their hard work on keeping the Facebook group from sucking and being really fun guys to work with deserved some recognition so Brendon and I spend an hour hearing about their beginnings in photography, their scariest adventure this past year, where they love to go close to home for photography and the one thing they have learned this year that they want to pass along. If you don't mind a bunch of dudes ribbing each other, laughing loudly and hanging out giggling like a bunch of 14-year-old girls you will enjoy this podcast. Special thanks to our other two Facebook Admins who unfortunately couldn't make it this episode: Brent Huntley and Josh Moore.
