In Search of Black Power
What Critics of Black “Respectability Politics” Miss. Black Power Beyond “The Boundaries of Blackness”

In Search of Black Power

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2026 72:39

Send us Fan MailIn the 90s and 2000s, a wave of academic texts emerged that challenge the dominate narrative of Black leadership and politics, claiming that the location of Black power in the Black church and “respectable” civil rights organizations limited Black politics. One of the most prominent of these texts is The Boundaries of Blackness, written by Cathy Cohen, which uses the example of the limited response to AIDS by Black civil society in the 80s/90s to argue that Black politics marginalized those most impacted by AIDS because the groups most impacted, drug users and those beyond heteronormativity, exceed the bounds of respectable Blackness. In this episode, we review this text, arguing that in its desire to challenge the limits of Black leadership, the text tells an overly critical tale of the Black community as innately locked into respectability. The text reads the Black used of genocide as a frame to understand AIDS as reflective of an inability to center non-respectable drug users and same gender loving individuals. This obscures the value of the genocide concept from a Black communities perspective in providing a comprehensive frame which includes serving those impacted by AIDS, as well addressing the role drugs /addiction played in destabilizing the Black community and larger systems of oppression. By largely preferring a politics of centering the marginalized over a frame of community mobilizing against genocide, the author centers a politics of representation which ultimately requires recognition from white power to be successful. By largely dismissing African centered and Afrocentric politics, the text fails to see the indigenous public health, drug use, and gender sexuality variant idea with Black/ African centered communities that could have been alternative frameworks for representation for marginalized identities, like the work of Mutulu Shakur at Lincoln Detox. It also obscures the role of white supremacy and “injecting oppression” play in forcing so-called “respectability strategies” in the Black community. While challenging existing Black political leadership, the text fails to challenge the larger dynamic of elite interest convergence black folks must depend on for change, leading to a diversification of the elite power brokers but failing to challenging the fundamental disempowerment of black communities. Finally, the text has been misinterpreted by some to argue the Black community is too innately conservative to be trusted with resources and power, thus being wielded as a tool against the Black community political power building.Support the showIn Search of Black Power is a Black-owned internet show and podcast.  This podcast is sponsored and produced by Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle (LBS). The United States of Anxiety

By 1986, almost 40 percent of people diagnosed with AIDS in the United States were either Black or Latino. As the full contours of the crisis became apparent, a group of Black gay men began to organize in cities across the country, demanding attention and support for the people dying in their midst. This effort required them to confront big, important institutions in both the medical establishment and the government — and it meant they had to stare down racism in the broader LGBTQ+ community. But perhaps their most pressing and consequential challenge was the most difficult to name: the rejection of their own community. As men, women and children within the Black community began falling ill, essential institutions — the family, the church, civil rights groups — which had long stood powerfully against the most brutal injustices, remained silent or, worse, turned away. Why? What made so many shrink back at such a powerful moment of need? And what would it take to get them to step up? In this episode, we meet some of the people who pushed their families, ministers and politicians to reckon with the crisis in their midst. We hear the words of a writer and poet, still echoing powerfully through the decades, demanding that he and his dying friends be both seen and heard; and we spend time with a woman who picked up their call, ultimately founding one of the country's first AIDS ministries. And we meet a legendary figure, Dr. Beny Primm, who, in spite of some of his own biases and blindspots, transformed into one of the era's leading medical advocates for Black people with HIV and AIDs. Along the way, we learn how one community was able to change — and we ask, what might have been different if that change had come sooner? This episode contains a brief mention of suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, there's help available. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is open 24 hours a day by calling or texting 988. We mark the end of Black History Month with a conversation about the people who are too often left out when we celebrate the past. What do we learn when we study the history of those considered wayward and existing outside of the norms of the day? Cultural historian and MacArthur fellow Saidiya Hartman introduces host Kai Wright to the young women whose radical lives were obscured by respectability politics. Hartman is the author of "Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments: Intimate Histories of Riotous Black Girls, Troublesome Women, and Queer Radicals," which offers an intimate look into some of the Black lives that have been seemingly erased from the history books. Through a series of readings, they explore the complicated role of Black intellectuals like W.E.B DuBois, the Black family and how a damaging moralism continues to inform the policing of marginalized communities, public space and American cultural politics today. This episode was originally published as “The ‘Beautiful Experiments' Left Out of Black History” on February 8, 2021. Listen to more episodes here. In this week's all-new episode of THE IDEALISTS., podcast host and entrepreneur, Melissa Kiguwa, speaks with the prolific visual artist, author, and breakout star of Miami Art Basel, Reyna Noriega. Born and raised, in Miami, Reyna paints an intentionally ebullient experience of Black and brown women. Her work has graced covers of The New Yorker, and Science Magazine, and has been featured at Brookfield Place overlooking Freedom Tower in New York City's financial district. Through her major partnerships with Apple, Old Navy, Madewell, Apt2b, and Wayfair, thousands of collectors showcase her art in their homes around the world. Having seen the power of introspection, self-reflection, and healing, Reyna's artistic vision teaches us about the myriad journeys women of color take as we struggle to rise and become our most empowered authentic selves.Highlights:- Reyna leads off the conversation by seeing a need not only for greater representation of women of color, but also a shift in the predominant narrative from one solely of trauma to one inclusive of joy, positivity, and uplifting stories.- Next, she relates her passion for the accessibility afforded by digital art, but also the challenges of its legitimacy as a form. Additionally, in balancing her desire for commercial collaboration with her desire for respect as a fine artist, she is also continually grappling with her legitimacy as an artist while also being able to monetize her work to live. It's the life of a working artist.- Building on this, she talks about the predatory nature of the art market—how one is only successful after death. Being a working, living artist, trying to make room for other artists to do the same, is very much part of her mission right now. With four shows at Miami Art Basel this year, and then curating her very first show featuring emerging Black and brown artists—she is finally realizing this mission in concrete terms.- Lastly, Reyna shares her audacious vision for the world that even amidst the current climate of negativity on the internet, and the highly divisive nature of society, we might still hold space for more love, compassion, and grace for one another.Resources:1. Professionalism, Respectability Politics and the Match This week, our host Dr. Steven Bradley is joined by co-host Dr. Nate Jones and they discuss several hot-button, current events issues affecting the medical community and Black culture. We continue last week's conversation by discussion professionalism, respectability politics and the match. We share our experiences with professionalism and how it can be weaponized. We also chat about respectability politics and how we must recognize the "priviledge" they provide so we can continue to advocate for our patients to as best we can. We tie everything together by discussing how these concepts can affect people at various stages of their medical careers, especially those applying to residency.  How can professionalism be weaponized? How do you recognize and avoid respectability politics? What can those involved in medical education do to create a welcoming environment for underrepresented students?  We hope you enjoy today's episode! Fractured Identity: A Black Spence Alumna Looks Back

In the third episode of our NYC private school series, Ellie and Carrie speak with Alyssa, a Black Spence alumna whose experience of growing up in uneasy proximity to whiteness was lonely and damaging. Alyssa, whose family represented what Caitlin Flanagan describes as "the bread and butter of these schools... the two-career couple who care greatly about their children's education and can afford it, but not easily," struggled to fit in with her wealthier white peers. A light-skinned Black woman with roots in what W. E. B. Du Bois deemed the "Talented Tenth," Alyssa's mother taught her to reject her blackness in the name of respectability. The disassociation brought on by the pressures of assimilation made Alyssa an anxious and compulsively polite child who could not freely be herself. One of the two Black students in her grade for her first eight years at Spence, Alyssa became a self-described "poser" whose desperation to be seen as white only led to isolation. She unpacks the traumas of self-surveillance and external adultification as a Black girl taught not to love herself. Reckoning years later with images of jubilant enslaved people in the Spence dance studio's wallpaper, Alyssa gathers the fragments of a fractured identity.
