Y con ese concepto en mente la discográfica británica Black Lion publicaba en el año 1971, el disco Atmosphere for Lovers and Thieves, una selección de dos sesiones grabadas por el saxofonista Ben Webster en 1965 que consiguieron capturar la esencia del arte baladístico en el que el viejo saxofonista, en sus años crepusculares, había alcanzado niveles de excelencia artística. Ben Webster, en aquellos años, refugiado en Europa desde 1964, había dejado atrás sus tiempos gloriosos en la orquesta de Duke Ellington, veinte años antes de estos registros. La vehemencia de su estilo, su sonido rudo y rocoso dejaba paso al susurrante sonido de su saxo, deslizándose seductor en la interpretación de las baladas que cada vez ocupaban mayor espacio en su repertorio. Webster nunca regresaría a su país, y fallecería en Copenhague en el año 1973, dejando como legado un amplísimo acervo discográfico así como un sonido y un estilo único y excepcional que le ha hecho merecedor un lugar privilegiado entre los más grandes de la historia del jazz y en especial del saxo tenor junto con otros dos gigantes del instrumento, Coleman Hawkins y Lester Young. On this episode, host, Aaron Nabus talks to the creator of the 80's anime inspired, Black Lion and Cubs, Hotep! Born in New York City in the 1970s, Hotep is the personification of the progress made during the civil rights movements, the birth of Hip-Hop music, and the emergence of Black culture in American society. After graduating from Morehouse College, he became one of the only Black, male kindergarten teachers in his district. There, he learned first-hand how powerful and influential media is on the human mind and psyche. Today, Hotep is a consultant to schools across the United States, a father of 2 and producer of several different types of media including: books, cartoons, films, music and video games. His most recent creation, a family-friendly anime series called Black Lion and Cubs is a perfect example of why his work has earned him nominations for the Presidential Citizen's Award and as a CNN Hero.  The Black Lion and Cubs universe incorporates, for now, a cartoon series, videogame, album, graphic novels, and motion manga series. I had the pleasure of meeting him at Black Comix Day 2024 in San Diego, CA where he was part of the panel that I moderated that touched on Black Culture in Anime and Manga. He currently has an active Kickstarter campaign going on until March 3, 2025 for his newest project – an anime short film about one of the characters from the Black Lion and Cubs universe, the Amazing Ariyah. Dans la capitale Mekele, deux ans après la signature de l'accord de paix, la situation s'est améliorée même si le quotidien des habitants reste très difficile.  De notre envoyé spécial de retour à Mekele,Au marché Adi-ha, les camions arrivent chargés pour alimenter les étals. Même si on est loin du niveau d'avant-guerre, les clients comme Fetsum Hayilu sont soulagés que le blocus cauchemardesque appartienne au passé. « J'ai ressuscité. Durant le siège, il n'y avait pas de nourriture, pas d'école. J'ai pris du poids, mais à l'époque, vous ne m'auriez pas reconnu. Des gens amenaient des denrées jusqu'aux barrages et soudoyaient les soldats pour les faire entrer », témoigne-t-il. « Il m'arrivait de ne pas manger pendant 5 ou 6 jours. Ma femme est morte faute de médicaments. » Il constate un changement depuis la levée du blocus : « Aujourd'hui, il y a une petite amélioration. Mais l'inflation et le chômage sont très élevés. La vraie différence, c'est que je n'entends plus de combats. »  Algaore Chmelku descend de son poids lourd. Il vient de faire cinq heures de route pour apporter son chargement d'oignons. Durant la guerre, venir jusqu'ici était impensable : « Aucune marchandise ne passait. Mais la situation s'est améliorée. La musique de ce bar populaire a remplacé le bruit des bombes. Dans un semblant de vie nocturne, Dessalegn Zeroa, musicien, s'apprête à donner un concert : « Pendant le siège, il n'y avait plus de vie nocturne. Je n'avais plus de revenus. Aujourd'hui, nous organisons des concerts payants et j'espère sortir un disque. Les gens recommencent un peu à s'amuser, même si les horreurs de la guerre les hantent encore. » Ainsi, il constate que l'ambiance de fête n'est pas totalement retrouvée.    Si Mekele revit peu à peu, la situation sociale n'en est pas moins difficile. Les fonctionnaires n'ont, par exemple, pas été payés depuis 17 mois. « C'est une nouvelle punition contre les Tigréens. Nous avons fait des pétitions, une grève. Mais le gouvernement fédéral a menacé de nous licencier, dénonce Weldu Abraha, professeur d'histoire à l'université. Il craint une fuite des cerveaux, lui-même cherche à quitter le pays : « 220 enseignants sont déjà partis. On constate une hausse des vols, viols et kidnappings. We were toying with the title "we hate rugby" given the sickening feeling of throwing away a 19 point lead against Bristol, but thankfully Leicester legend Richard Cockerill stops by to tell us all about his Georgian rugby project with the national side and their franchise, Black Lion, as they come to town for a friendly on Friday night.  We do of course delve into the gutting defeat at the weekend, but as always we try to find some positives and Elliott reveals some of the discussions at the open forum with Dan McKellar and Richard Wilks.
