In this powerful and deeply important episode, we shed light on an often overlooked issue: eating disorders in men. While conditions like anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder are frequently associated with women, men suffer too — often in silence, hidden by stigma and misunderstanding. We dive into the real experiences behind these struggles, emphasizing that there is a person behind every illness, battling serious physical and mental health challenges that, in severe cases, can lead to suicidal thoughts.Joining us first is Conor Nolan, a mental health advocate from Blacklion and former student of St Clare's Comprehensive School, Manorhamilton. Conor shares his personal story of developing anorexia at just 12 years old.Conor opens up about how the illness “crept” into his life during early secondary school years. He reflects on feeling "helpless" and "possessed" by his disorder and the long, private road to recovery while trying to maintain a "normal" appearance to the outside world. His book, "Normal", offers personal insights and advice for teenagers, parents, siblings, and friends to better understand and recognize eating disorders early.Today, Conor co-runs the Normal - Mental Wellbeing Project, proudly co-funded by the European Commission, helping young people across Ireland. You can find Conor's book "Normal" on Amazon and in local Irish bookstores. We then welcome Sean Blake, a married father of four from Dublin, who bravely shares his journey of mental health struggles from childhood into adulthood, culminating in his diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa coming into his 30s.Sean discusses the challenges of facing an eating disorder later in life and how being open about his story is helping him heal while hopefully inspiring others.Sean is actively involved in mental health advocacy through Shine, Bodywhys, and St Patrick's Mental Health Services, and he featured in the RTE documentary "Anorexia: My Family & Me."Closing Thoughts:Eating disorders are not just physical illnesses — they are deeply rooted in mental health. They do not discriminate by gender, age, or background. We hope today's conversations with Conor and Sean shine a light on the hidden struggles many endure and encourage listeners to seek help if they need it or to better support those around them.If you or someone you know is affected, please reach out for help:www.shine.ie – Confidential support for mental health recovery.
On this episode, host, Aaron Nabus talks to the creator of the 80's anime inspired, Black Lion and Cubs, Hotep! Born in New York City in the 1970s, Hotep is the personification of the progress made during the civil rights movements, the birth of Hip-Hop music, and the emergence of Black culture in American society. After graduating from Morehouse College, he became one of the only Black, male kindergarten teachers in his district. There, he learned first-hand how powerful and influential media is on the human mind and psyche. Today, Hotep is a consultant to schools across the United States, a father of 2 and producer of several different types of media including: books, cartoons, films, music and video games. His most recent creation, a family-friendly anime series called Black Lion and Cubs is a perfect example of why his work has earned him nominations for the Presidential Citizen's Award and as a CNN Hero. The Black Lion and Cubs universe incorporates, for now, a cartoon series, videogame, album, graphic novels, and motion manga series. I had the pleasure of meeting him at Black Comix Day 2024 in San Diego, CA where he was part of the panel that I moderated that touched on Black Culture in Anime and Manga. He currently has an active Kickstarter campaign going on until March 3, 2025 for his newest project – an anime short film about one of the characters from the Black Lion and Cubs universe, the Amazing Ariyah. Welcome to the show, Hotep!
In this exciting episode of Wise_N_Nerdy, Charles, Joe, and Kurt are joined once again by the incredibly talented Hotep from Black Lion and Cubs. The hosts share some truly wild stories—Charles opens up about family members who are diagnosable, Joe recounts tales of his uncle's drug-induced antics, and Kurt shares about his narcissistic sister. With a roll of the dice, the journey continues into the "What Are You Nerding Out About?" segment. Charles waves his nerd flag proudly as he excitedly discusses setting up a combined email inbox to streamline his workflow. Joe shares a heartfelt moment about spending time with his oldest son, visiting the ultra-geeky store Vintage Stock, and picking up Lord of the Rings Risk to play together. He also raves about Brandon Sanderson's fantasy western, Alloy of Law, and its incredible storytelling. Meanwhile, Kurt nerds out about his brand-new rice cooker and his obsession with the latest Pokémon TCG booster set.Next up, the dice bring forth the "How Do I...?" segment, where Hotep provides deep insights into his first-ever Kickstarter campaign. His experiences and lessons learned offer valuable knowledge to anyone looking to embark on a similar journey. The fates then guide the hosts into the "Daddy, Tell Me A Story" segment, leading to a hilarious discussion about the dumb things they did as teenagers. The tales are filled with reckless car crashes and mooning passing cars—youthful foolishness at its finest. Then, it's time for the "Parliament of Papas," where the hosts debate a hot topic: Does listening to an audiobook count as reading? The discussion gets lively as they weigh the merits of comprehension, engagement, and accessibility. To wrap things up, the crew delivers a round of groan-worthy bad dad jokes, bringing laughter to close out another fantastic episode. No matter your fandom, there's always a place for you here.

Mike and Elliott enjoy the positivity brought to the club by a youthful Tigers XV as they put away an experienced Georgia Black Lion side in an exhibition game and ask the key questions - who is the star of the future, if not now, and whose morale can they damage with another bad nickname? We also look forward to the dreaded Sale away fixture, which has rarely been a happy hunting ground - but surely that has to change soon?

Ever wondered how a nation forges its way from the ranks of tier-two rugby to the pinnacle of tier-one? That's exactly what we're unpacking with Rama Chand, the Georgian Rugby Union's Director of Rugby Development. Through an enlightening dialogue, we reflect on his international journey and dissect the strategic endeavors propelling Georgian rugby forward. Rama Chand sheds light on the pivotal role played by the Black Lion franchise team in cultivating local talent and the broader implications of bolstering a strong rugby ecosystem through dedicated coach and referee development.Straddling the line between player and coach is no simple task—it's an art form that demands finesse, and it's a narrative I'm intimately familiar with. As we wade into the complexities of dual roles, I peel back the layers of the emotional labyrinth that player-coaches navigate. Sharing personal experiences and the wisdom gathered as a coach educator, the conversation offers up strategies that player-coaches can adopt to thrive—not just survive—within their teams. This episode is a treasure trove for those seeking to understand the emotional intelligence required to lead and play simultaneously. Finally, we broaden our lens to the overarching themes of coaching and team management across the sports spectrum. My personal coaching philosophy has evolved over the years and, in this episode, I lay bare the lessons learned about adaptability and redefining success. We chat about the unique challenges of foreign coaches assimilating into Georgian culture and how embracing local customs can deepen both personal growth and coaching prowess. Whether you're an aspiring coach or a seasoned professional, this episode is a map guiding you through the terrain of professional development, mentorship, and the relentless pursuit of coaching excellence.

Hello Potatoes! We're back and ready to 3-2-1 RO-HO-HO-HOAST for the winter season. Starting off our seasonal journey for this mini series, we pulled up our sleigh (Emer's Nissan Juke) to The Black Lion in Inchicore, Dublin. In the episode, we rated and reviewed our experience in forensic detail as you have come expect from Ireland's premiere carvery/roast detectives. But before we dived into the meat and two veg of our Black Lion carv experience, we talked about all manner of things including Esther getting ghosted on Done Deal, corn snack Queens, cream cake dreams and lots more besides. And we have news! To help keep gravy in the tank, for this season of the podcast, we've created a Winter Podcast Selection Box on Patreon. There you will find full, ad free episodes. If you want to support us there and enjoy our reviews, just click here. The full, ad free festive episodes feature sit down carvs, stand up roasts and our Christmas Day special including Emer's Christmas Quiz. We're so glad to be back...LET'S GO!Love,Emer & Esther.Follow Emer on Instagram, Esther here and the pod here.P.S As always, if you have any great roast/carvery lunch recommendations you'd like to share with us, email helloroastpotatoes@gmail.com.
