You could raise 700k for one, be a success financially, and still struggle to do the next. That's why we are going to bring you several interviews this year from filmmakers who have done it. We'll ask them how they did it and get some new tactics to try. First up is filmmaker Alexandra Boylan. She's raised money for 8 feature films, and all have made their money back. How did she do it? We ask her in today's episode. (Episode 35) Hosted by Director/Producer Jenn Page. What makes a great movie? Some would say it's all about the acting! Others point to the script saying great writing is the cornerstone of all communication. Or perhaps you are like most of us who would just simply say, “Them special effects are fantastic!"Our guest today, entertainment executive Michael Scott, would say it's not so much about the movie but more importantly it's all about the message. In his role as CEO at Pure Flix Entertainment, Michael is more concerned about creating family-friendly media that changes lives, inspires hearts and lifts the spirits of people and the ones we love.Buoyed by the unexpected success of the “God's Not Dead” movie series several years ago, Pure Flix found themselves becoming a transformational voice in our culture. This virtue is a highly guarded core value of my Michael's as he and Pure Flix aspire to create up to 15 original projects a year that strengthens one's faith and values, is suitable for the entire family, and is accessible anywhere through the streaming platform.Recent projects of note include the movie “Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters”, the documentary “The Case for Heaven”, and the highly entertaining sitcom, “Live & Local".Michael joins us on the Crossmap Podcast to discuss the current state of online streaming content and how Pure Flix fits into that. Listen as he provides what is essentially your own personal “The State of Faith-Based Online Streaming Report” and his thoughts on why the “God's Not Dead” movie franchise was so successful.Links to Michael Michael on LinkedIn PureFlix Website Links to Crossmap Crossmap Website Crossmap Facebook

In today's News: Texas Planned Parenthood wins an extension On Wednesday, a Texas judge blocked the state from removing Medicaid funding from Planned Parenthood, after it filed a last-minute lawsuit against the state. The new rule was set to go into effect on Feb. 4 after the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the state could defund the abortion corporation. Planned Parenthood’s lawsuit alleges that the state did not give Medicaid patients who use Planned Parenthood adequate time to find a new provider. Patients had been given 30 days to find a new health care provider as opposed to the six months Planned Parenthood requested. Now that the grace period has ended, Travis County Judge Maya Guerra Gamble ruled that patients should be given more time, set a hearing for Feb. 17 and placed a temporary restraining order on the rule. Kansas voters to decide on abortion Lawmakers in Kansas last week overwhelmingly passed a ballot proposal that if approved by state voters would amend the state constitution to clarify that there is no right to an abortion. Senators in the Sunflower State voted 28 to 11 last Thursday to support Concurrent Resolution 5003, which places the amendment on the Aug. 2, 2022, state ballot, where a simple majority would be needed to change the state’s constitution. The language of the amendment states that “The constitution of the state of Kansas does not require government funding of abortion and does not create or secure a right to abortion.” The measure, known as the “Value Them Both Amendment,” was passed in the Kansas House by a vote of 86 to 38 on Jan. 22, the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, a pro-abortion Democrat, denounced the proposed amendment and claimed that it would harm the economy and send the state back “to the Dark Ages.” School grants a student a religious exemption A public high school in Illinois has approved a student’s request for a religious exemption from a required sexuality program after a national legal group voiced concern that the student faced the threat of possible discipline for her refusal to take part in the program. The First Liberty Institute announced yesterday that senior Marcail McBride's parents are satisfied with the offer from administrators at Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora for their daughter to complete an alternate assignment instead of participating in the school’s Student Gender and Sexuality Program. In a statement, the legal group said that the academy “reversed its position and approved senior Marcail McBride’s request for a religious accommodation.” Christian movie studio changes its name The faith-based studio Pure Flix Entertainment has changed its corporate name to Pinnacle Peak Pictures as it begins production on “God's Not Dead: We the People.” Pure Flix Entertainment is the studio behind the “God's Not Dead” franchise. It's rebranding to Pinnacle Peak Pictures follows AFFIRM Entertainment acquiring the Pure Flix subscription VOD service last year. Pure Flix’s subscription video on demand will keep its name, but because of Sony’s AFFIRM deal, Pure Flix Entertainment became a separate company. Pinnacle Peak Pictures, which has offices in Los Angeles and Scottsdale, Arizona, will continue to operate as a leading independent faith and family studio. Along with the “God’s Not Dead” franchise, the indy studio's most popular film releases include “The Case for Christ” and “Do You Believe?” Pinnacle Peak Pictures has also produced, acquired, marketed and distributed more than 100 faith and family-friendly films.
Details, credits, errata: This week Sam and Alissa talk about God’s Not Dead, Harold Cronk’s 2014 Obama-era fever dream about liberal professors run amok on campus, a sort of Christian version of Crash or Magnolia where a bunch of tangentially related characters have mini-adventures throughout the Fox News Cinematic Universe. Americans can watch God’s Not Dead on Netflix, if they so choose. Our guest is the wonderfully funny comedian and writer Josh Gondelman, an absolute treasure of goodwill and good jokes, whose book Nice Try can and should be purchased here. He’s a writer and producer on Showtime’s terrific late-night talk show Desus & Mero and an all-around swell guy. He also watched this movie of his own free will long before he came on our podcast, so he is also a man of formidable patience and endurance. We talk about a lot of stuff on this episode; it’s a long one but there’s no fat on it largely because Josh is so funny. This is, he observes, an incredibly mean movie. I also get to the bottom of why I don’t care for Franklin Graham, Alissa reminds us that people are only mad at God in these movies because they have some trauma that it is the Christian characters’ job to expose, and Josh tells us about being a Jewish guy in a largely Christian community (and country) and is very generous about our incredibly weird culture. Our episode art on the website this week is a picture of Friedrich Nietzsche, the philosopher and poet who caused all the trouble in the first place, made available through Wikimedia Commons and used with our gratitude. Our theme song is Louis Armstrong and His Hot 5’s Muskrat Ramble, made freely available by the Boston Public Library and audio engineering shop George Blood, LP through the Internet Archive. Shane Pruitt, author of the new book (And Why God's Truth Is Infinitely Better), starts off the show. He's a father of five, including a little boy (Titus) adopted from Uganda at age six months. Shane & his wife had much to process when, after returning from Uganda, they learned of Titus' diagnosis of cerebral palsy & epilepsy. Part of their journey involved well-meaning Christians sharing phrases like "God won't give you more than you can handle" (where does it say that?!) and getting back to what God's Word actually says, finding freedom in Biblical truth.Paul Bond with The Hollywood Reporter also calls in regarding the brand new movie "Unplanned." Released this past weekend, Unplanned tells the true story of Abby Johnson, once a star in the world of Planned Parenthood, and her becoming a pro-life activist. Bond has written numerous articles on the movie since it was announced many months ago. He shares insight into why the movie was given an "R" rating (a first for Pure Flix Entertainment, which was not pleased with the MPAA decision) and how almost every single record label / media group denied the makers of "Unplanned" licensing of music for the movie soundtrack.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How do you go from being an atheist with a Master’s of Studies degree in law from Yale having extreme anger management issues to now a fully dedicated follower of Jesus Christ and one of modern society’s most influential and most read Christian authors? Well today we’re going to find out as we connect with Lee Strobel, the New York Times bestselling Christian author and apologist for the truth behind Christianity. In 1980, after he won prestigious awards for investigative journalism, Lee Strobel was promoted to legal affairs editor for the Chicago Tribune. When his wife, Leslie, became a Christian, Lee utilized his journalistic and legal training to disprove the claims of Christianity only to become a Christian himself. David has been working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles for over fifteen years. Raised in a small farming town outside of Dodge City, Kansas, David grew up the son of a Mennonite preacher. After high school, David attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago; however, he left Moody after one year and moved to Los Angeles. At the age of nineteen, without knowing anyone, and only six months after moving, David landed a recurring role on the hit CBS TV sitcom, Evening Shade for four years. He played the best friend of Burt Reynolds's son, David, then went on to make guest appearances on such shows as: Coach, Saved by the Bell, Sisters, Melrose Place, Martial Law, and many others. Raised in the church, David was very familiar with Christian films, and had a passion to use his gifts and talents to make films that uplift and inspire the human spirit. In 1999, with that passion, David produced and starred in the feature-length film, The Moment After. The following year, he produced and starred in the groundbreaking film, Mercy Streets. David was nominated for a movie guide “best actor” award for his dual roles in the film. Early in 2006, David became a founding partner in the film distribution/production entity Pure Flix Entertainment. Today, Pure Flix maintains its position as the number one Christian studio, producing and distributing more films than any other studio. David produced and played a lead role in his latest movie, God's not Dead. This airs the weekend after the movie releases into theatres and you can find a link at http://godsnotdeadthemovie.com.
