Today I'm joined by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas to talk about keeping kids safe online. Senator Cruz is a father to two teenage girls. He is facing the same struggles as all parents related to social media and smartphones. In addition to offering advice for listeners, Senator Cruz introduces us to three important bills that can help keep our kids safe online. The Take it Down Act The Kids Off Social Media Act The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) Please contact your Senators and Representatives in the House to ask them to pass KOSA, the Take it Down Act and the Kids Off Social Media Act. About Senator Ted Cruz: In 2013, Ted was sworn into the United States Senate, where he has been a passionate fighter for limited government, economic growth, and national security. He has authored dozens of legislative measures that have been signed into law, including expanding 529 college savings accounts to allow parents to save for K-12 public, private, and religious education, repealing Obamacare's individual mandate, imposing sanctions on terrorists who use civilians as human shields, designating North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, targeting Putin's Nord Stream 2 pipeline through multiple bills that halted construction and kept it stalled, reauthorizing and reforming NASA, holding dictatorships in South America accountable, and ensuring the availability of additional records to help solve civil rights cold cases. He is also leading the fight in the Senate to support Texas jobs, rein in Big Tech, secure the border, and fundamentally reassess the U.S.-China relationship and hold the Chinese Communist Party accountable for covering up the coronavirus pandemic, committing human rights atrocities, and engaging in censorship, propaganda, and espionage in the United States. Ted, his wife Heidi, their two daughters Caroline and Catherine, and his entire family have been blessed to live the American Dream—the idea that anyone, through hard work and determination, can achieve anything. Ted is committed to ensuring every family has that same opportunity. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/scrolling2death/support

How Putting Your Kids First Harms Your Marriage (Marriage & Family Series) Put your kids first? Nope! Listen to learn what happens when you elevate your children & their activities to where only your spouse belongs. If you have children, if you have ever struggled with finding the balance between taking care of your children and nurturing your marriage, well, then friend, this conversation is for you. If you're Christian, you've likely heard of that J-O-Y acronym. Jesus. Others. You. So many of us were raised with this whole idea that you always come last. Everybody is first. You're always last. When you get married, your spouse is first. But then when you have kids, (we don't say this, but we do this), we end up putting our kids even before our spouse. So in many families, this is how it looks. Your kids are first. Your spouse might come in there second. Friends, neighbors, responsibilities, jobs. Third, if you have a relationship with the Lord. He's probably third or fourth in there, somewhere in the mix. And then you are, like, on the bottom, bottom, bottom of the totem pole. And somehow that's supposed to make us feel like we're great mothers or we're great parents. That is so lopsided, and it's so destructive to you, and it's also destructive to your family. Putting Kids First! Amy Bohn from (PERK) won a key battle for parents to claim a victory in Los Angeles against Covid Vax mandates. Amy shares how parents are standing up for kids against transitioning a child's gender, promoting gender affirming treatment, and sexually explicit curriculum to minors without parent's knowledge or proper consent is illegal. Parents file first lawsuit against California School District for violating the Law. Don't miss this opportunity to listen in, friends. I know you'll be encouraged! Share this with family and friends. The fundamental questions to ask are this: “Do you believe the government and/or school should be able to transition what gender your child is using puberty blockers and gender reassignment surgeries disguised as “support plans” without parental knowledge or consent?” The Protection of the Educational Rights of Kids (PERK), is a bi-partisan, non-profit that advocates for civil rights and freedoms, with particular focus on protecting children. PERK protects parental rights and represents tens of thousands of parents and children across the state. PERK is supporting this lawsuit. The district Is being sued for illegally providing minors with inappropriate “Gender Affirming” Surveys, medically and age-inappropriate curriculum, without proper parent notification. Transitioning a child's gender, promoting gender affirming treatment, and sexually explicit curriculum to minors without parent's knowledge or proper consent is illegal. School Districts are clearly violating the law by providing minors with inappropriate “gender affirming” surveys and “gender affirming treatments” while withholding this from parents. These, so called, “Support Plans,” remove the most important and vital protection children have, the parent. This issue is getting national attention as the practice is increasing to give children puberty blockers to alter their gender. This is not an LGBTQ issue. This is about the children. Children are minors. They are not equipped to make decisions of this nature without their parents. They should not be manipulated to make life altering medical treatments without their parents' knowledge and consent. These choices are for adults to make, not minors. This is also about parents being the sole protectors and guardian of their child's body, development, and mind. It's no secret that we are facing a mental health crisis among our pediatric patients. Kids and teenagers have higher rates of depression and anxiety than ever before, and suicide has now become the second leading cause of death for adolescents. More and more of our patients and families are seeking mental health care support and services, and we have an unfortunate shortage of pediatric and adolescent mental health specialists to fill the need. This has resulted in kids showing up in clinics and emergency departments in crisis, and sometimes spending days to week sitting in a hospital awaiting specialized inpatient mental health care. There appears to be no easy fix for this issue, but here to talk to us today about the landscape of pediatric and adolescent mental health care and some steps that Children's Minnesota is taking to help with gaps in care is Jamie Winter RN, MBA, director of mental health services.

How hopeful do you feel about the future? Does it show in your interactions with youth? I think we can all use a healthy dose of hope these days, but we're not talking about it enough. We look at the events of the world today and we stay quiet, feeling like we need to grin and bear it. That's not true. If you're struggling, others are struggling. And our youth need to hear stories of love, compassion, and hope. It's our responsibility as educators to do just that. This week on the podcast, I'm joined by Lindsay Recknell, a certified expert in hope. She's sharing why this is so important and the brain science to back up the power of hope. This isn't a bunch of woo woo talk; it's real science and actionable steps we can all take to become more hopeful and improve the mental health of our educators, our students, and our communities at large. About Lindsay Recknell: As an expert in hope and a Certified Psychological Health & Safety Advisor, Lindsay Recknell works with individuals and organizations to increase their levels of psychological health & safety in the workplace using Positive Psychology and the Science of Hope. She empowers individuals, strengthens teams and transforms organizations through her Self-Awareness Superhero, Dream Catalyst and Wellness Webinars programs. She is host of two podcasts, Hope Motivates Action and Mental Health in Minutes. Lindsay lives in Calgary with her husband and their Golden Retriever, Squeak. Connect with her on LinkedIn. We don't build houses without first laying a solid foundation. So why do we expect children to learn without first making sure they feel safe and secure? COVID has been a complex trauma for us all, yet we're pushing on rather than taking the time to process the information and being mindful of what students (and teachers!) are experiencing. Because if students aren't regulated, they cannot process academic content. On this episode, Dr. Kristen Miller of With Heart Project is sharing her research on the brain and why, when we take the time to make sure our students feel safe and that they belong, academic retention and scores increase dramatically. In the episode, she shares her perspective on positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS), acute vs. complex trauma, how trauma changes people, how teachers can meet the demands of students, and so much more. About Dr. Kristen Miller: Following a three-year engineering career, Kristen Miller spent 13 years in education teaching predominantly high school mathematics, AVID and Career Technical Education, and serving as a middle school Vice Principal in Northern California. Seeing a huge need for high quality social and emotional interventions, systems and supports, Miller created a youth empowerment organization, With Heart Project (WHP), to work alongside schools and districts promoting Social-Emotional Wellness (SEL), Restorative Practices (RP), and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Slam the Gavel welcomes Julie and Jim on the show to talk about successful co-parenting strategies that have worked for their blended families. Julie and Jim discussed how things were in the beginning when their children came together and all was going well and smoothly, but when they became engaged to be married the relationships with the children themselves and with their new additional parent became rocky. Advice from Julie and Jim was extremely insightful as well as helpful. They explained that it was hard for their children to share their father and/or their mother, and how important it was for them to listen to their children. Children have their fears, Julie explained as she and her girls moved into Jim's house with his two children. Jim's children felt threatened that a new family was moving in their home and how would this affect their relationship with their father. Would they still have time with him or pay more attention to the new additions to the family? How would their new step-mother treat them? Sometimes the kids think that they can't talk to their parent and feel lost. It is very hard on the kids when they go back and forth between houses when all these changes are taking place. Jim advised to be supportive to the children, level-headed and remain calm at all times. Also when the ex's remarry, be as positive and supportive of their marriages and not to say anything negative, because the kids will begin to build up resentment and placing blame onto the new parent. They both stated that it would not be good for the kids if negativity reigned. Julie cautioned to not let words from the other parent upset you and not to take it personally, even from the child. Be loving and neutral as you can be and let the other parent handle a situation and not to interfere or put the kids in the middle. Jim added that the Step-Parent should take a step back, yet be supportive to the Step-Parent as they ease into the blended family. It is very important to pay attention to your own children and that the family doesn't have to do everything all the time and to give the children some time to themselves. This is a fine balance. The most important thing Julie and Jim added was not to badmouth the ex in front of the kids. Kids feel the stress when that is happening and may act out in various ways, such as cutting. Also , Julie recommended Counseling/Therapy for the kids going through this transition and if harsh words are spoken to quickly, to apologize explaining that you can do the best that you can. Mistakes will be made and every parent is human while trying to help their children adjust to a blended family. Julie and Jim are very proud of their children now that they are adults and very productive individuals to society with a good work ethic. It was very important to them both that the children had a relationship with their grandparents and extended family members. Ending the podcast, Julie has said that, "Love always wins." https://monicaszymonik.mykajabi.com/Masterclass USE CODE SLAM THE GAVEL PODCAST FOR 10% OFF THE COURSE http://www.dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.com/ Music by: mictechmusic@yahoo.com Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)

Interview with Emily Koenig, Executive Director www.keepingkidsfirst.orgBehavioral Health Response (BHR) Hotline Numbers(314)628-2929, orText 4HLP to 31658 Starting in 2005 and continuing over the next couple of years, many communities across Missouri experienced reduced funding in mental health and substance use treatment services for children and youth due to budget cuts at the state and federal level. Recognizing the needs of children and families in St. Louis County, a coalition of committed local nonprofit agencies and community supporters decided to address the growing problem. An independent needs assessment was commissioned which provided the data St. Louis County voters needed to support the initiative. Using Missouri State Statutes RSMo 67.1775 and 210.861, which allowed local communities to create a community children’s service fund for ten specific behavioral health service areas through a referendum, the St. Louis County Putting Kids First Campaign was launched in 2008. Putting Kids First, also known as Proposition 1, passed on November 4, 2008 with a resounding 62% of St. Louis County voters’ approval. Today, St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund (CSF) is the largest children’s service fund in the state of Missouri, generating approximately $42 million annually through a quarter cent sales tax. Since the first allocation in 2010, CSF has invested over $300 million in local nonprofits and governmental agencies to provide behavioral health services for children and youth in the county. Through collaboration and partnership, CSF ensures children and youth have the support and resources they need to achieve their potential. The Children's Service Fund's Mission:To improve the lives of children, youth, and families in St. Louis County by strategically investing in the creation and maintenance of an integrated system of care that delivers effective and quality mental health and substance abuse services.

With misinformation about vaccines proliferating among certain groups in the U.S., diseases that had previously been thought eradicated are creeping back into American life. As far as the law is concerned, whether or not a parent chooses to put their own child at risk by denying them vaccinations remains, largely, their personal choice. But this hands-off attitude toward vaccinations, particularly among children, puts everyone else at risk. Here to talk about the threat posed by the anti-vaccination movement, and what we can do to stop it, are Sarah Levin and Ed Beck. Sarah Levin is the Legislative Associate of the Secular Coalition and Ed Beck is the senior policy analyst for the Center For Inquiry’s Office of Public Policy. CFI is working with SCA to launch a new campaign called Put Kids First. For additional information about how you can help combat anti-vaccination laws in your area check out the campaign website, and visit CFI’s Keep Health Care Safe and Secular website to learn more about the fight to keep religion and pseudoscience out of health policy.
