This week on Caveat, Dave and Ben welcome back N2K's own Ethan Cook for the third installment of our newest policy deep dive segment. As a trusted expert in law, privacy, and surveillance, Ethan is joining the show regularly to provide in-depth analysis on the latest policy developments shaping the cybersecurity and legal landscape. Please take a moment to fill out an audience survey! Let us know how we are doing! Policy Deep Dive In this Caveat Policy Deep Dive, we turn our focus to online safety for children. The discussion highlights legislative efforts such as the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) and COPPA 2.0, which aim to strengthen protections for minors online but face criticism over free speech concerns and potential government overreach. Despite bipartisan support, these bills have stalled in Congress, prompting states like Florida, California, and Utah to implement their own child safety laws. The episode examines the challenges of enforcement, the impact of state-led initiatives, and the ongoing debate over balancing child protection with digital rights. From cyberbullying to harmful algorithms, the risks are real. This week, Senators Marsha Blackburn and Richard Blumenthal join us to discuss their bipartisan bill—the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA). Together, they're taking on Big Tech to ensure the safety of children online. Tune in to hear how KOSA could change the digital world for the better. Learn more about your ad choices. KOSA, the Kids Online Safety Act — lifesaving legislation that would ensure social media platforms have real protections for young people — did not pass Congress. For the last few years, there has been bipartisan support across the political spectrum to legislate for safer spaces online, but ultimately House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise sided with Big Tech at the expense of America's children and refused to let KOSA advance. I'm gonna be honest - I had to take a few days to get thru it. But then something happened - something that showed me….proved to me….that despite this gaping loss, people are making healthy tech changes.

Representative Ro Khanna represents the wealthiest congressional district in the country, but he wants to show Democrats how to speak to the working class. And perhaps surprisingly, he's pretty good at it. But although Khanna was one of Bernie Sanders' co-chairs in 2020, the “progressive capitalist” from Silicon Valley (don't call him a democratic socialist) also hobnobs with tech titans. Because according to Khanna, the way to reindustrialize and revitalize the economy is by mobilizing both union leaders and tech and industry leaders — and he thinks he can be the one to bring them together. Kara and Ro discuss everything from the DOGE committee, the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and Trump's threats to jail members of the January 6 committee, AI policy, KOSA, and tech antitrust. Led by Tennessee Attorney General Skrmetti, 32 attorneys general (AGs) sent a bipartisan letter (19 Republicans and 13 Democrats) to both houses of Congress this week, supporting the passage of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA). Fr. Shawn's Paranormal Ministry Date: November 8th, 2024 Episode: 14 Guest: Charlote Kosa Topic: Charlotte will be discussing her California cases and different types of hauntings. About the Guest: Charlotte is a sensitive, a member of California Haunts paranormal investigation, and hosts California Haunts Radio. Charlotte is also a writer, filmmaker and producer. She is from Sacramento.
Mike talks about how and why some authentic media looks like it was generated by AI; Hans talks about KOSA – the Kids Online Safety Act – and how it is shaped by not one, but two concurrent moral panics. Also: RARE TAPES!
“There is a beautiful Hindustani saying, ‘Kosa kosa per pani badle, chare kosa per vani,' which means "Every two miles the water changes, and every four the language." So that, in fact, is the geography of taste and terroir in India.”This week on the show, we talk with sociologist Krishnendu Ray about place and food and caste in India and how identity can be defined as much by what you DON'T eat, as by what you DO eat. And we share a recipe for a home grown hot sauce that cannot be prepared indoors.

This week Bryan, Jules, and Christina are joined by reporter Jasmine Mithani to talk about the Kids Online Safety Act. While protecting children from harmful material online seems like a win for everyone, some LGBTQ organizations fear that KOSA would be used to shut down LGBTQ+ content online and take away important resources for queer youth. There's a major internet speech regulation currently making its way through Congress, and it has a really good chance of becoming law. It's called KOSPA: the Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act, which passed in the Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support late last month. At a high level, KOSPA could radically change how tech platforms handle speech in an effort to try and make the internet safer for minors. It's a controversial bill, with a lot going on. To break it all down, I invited on Verge senior policy reporter Lauren Feiner, who's been covering these bills for months now, to explain what's happening, what these bills actually do, and what the path forward for this legislation looks like. Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta is expanding AI offerings across its products, even as the company gets rid of AI features that haven’t quite landed with consumers. The bottom line? CEO Mark Zuckerberg says “Meta AI is on track to be the most used AI assistant in the world by the end of the year.”Then, the Wall Street Journal’s senior personal tech columnist Joanna Stern shares surprises and regrets on her journey as an electric vehicle owner. But first, this week in Congress, the Senate passed the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act, also known as COPPA 2.0, and the Kids Online Safety Act, or KOSA, in a rare bipartisan vote — 91 senators voted in favor, with just three opposing these measures, which aim to reduce harm to kids on the internet.

This week, Alan and Quinta were joined by Kevin Frazier to talk through some of the week's biggest national security news, including:“KOSA Nostra.” An overwhelming majority of senators voted to pass the Kids Online Safety Act, also known as KOSA—a bipartisan piece of legislation that would impose new responsibilities on online platforms in looking after their underage users. Despite the 91-3 vote in the Senate, KOSA has faced strong opposition from a number of civil rights and internet freedom groups, and its path ahead in the House remains uncertain. What's next for the bill, and what does its success so far say about the state of tech policy in the U.S.?“Herding Llamas.” The company formerly known as Facebook announced the release of a new AI large language model, Llama 3.1. Meta described the model as “open-source”—but is it responsible to release such a powerful model that way? And what does this mean for the AI arms race in Silicon Valley?“Keeping the Nine in Line.” Fresh on the heels of the Supreme Court's ruling granting presidents broad immunity from criminal prosecution, President Biden announced his support for a slate of reforms aimed squarely at the Court: a constitutional amendment ruling out presidential immunity, along with 18-year term limits and a binding code of conduct for Supreme Court justices. But any of these proposals would face a difficult road toward implementation. What is the White House's aim here? For object lessons, Alan suggested that listeners might enjoy homemade cucumber agua fresca as a cooling summer beverage. Kevin is enjoying a new song by Kelsea Ballerini and Noah Kahan. Originally introduced in 2022, the 'Kids Online Security Act' (KOSA) was cosponsored by Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) aims to create a “duty of care” which requires companies to take steps to prevent harm while using their products. In this case, social media platforms and other internet sites, would have to do a better job curbing their algorithms that end up targeting children. The bill, which past a cloture vote and now awaits final voting, has been supported by various non-profits and major tech companies but also opposed by certain groups. FOX's Gurnal Scott speaks with Jake Denton, research associate in the Tech Policy Center at the Heritage Foundation, who explains what is in the bill and breaks down who supports and opposes it.
