As someone who isn't from West Virginia but was drawn to this podcast because of its positive message, I have been thoroughly impressed with what I've heard. The hosts, Cooper, CJ, and Mason, have created a truly uplifting show that encourages listeners to pursue their passions and highlights the incredible talent that comes out of the state. It's clear that they have a genuine love for West Virginia and are dedicated to showing it in a positive light.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the wide range of guests that they feature. From successful entrepreneurs to talented musicians to community leaders, they bring on individuals from all walks of life who are making a difference in West Virginia. This variety keeps the podcast fresh and engaging, as each episode brings something new and interesting to the table. Additionally, the hosts do a great job of conducting interviews that are both entertaining and informative. They ask thoughtful questions and allow their guests to share their stories in an authentic way.
While I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to The Mountaineer Media Podcast, one area where it could improve is consistency in terms of episode release schedule. There have been instances where there has been a longer gap between episodes, which can be frustrating for eager listeners like myself. However, I understand that producing a podcast takes time and effort, so I'm willing to be patient as long as the quality remains high.

Besides her performances, Kate contributes to her community as an official ambassador for Charleston, partnering with the city's Convention and Visitors Bureau. Tiffany Crum is a Supportive Counselor at WVU Medicine Thomas Hospital, where she aids patients battling substance use disorder. She is an example of the power of recovery and is celebrating two years of sobriety—but the journey was far from easy. In this episode, we discuss how she overcame the most difficult challenges, including beating addiction and regaining custody of her three kids. Her past, marked by the trials of addiction and homelessness in Charleston, led her to the welcoming doors of the YWCA Sojourner's Shelter in October 2019. This pivotal encounter provided her with a sanctuary and the essential tools for rebuilding her life. Through the support of Sojourner's Shelter and a network of helping hands, Crum achieved remarkable milestones, securing stable housing, transportation, employment, and the custody of her three children, making her story as one of profound transformation and enduring strength. Recently, she was recognized as a Woman of Achievement, earning the YWCA Empowerment Award. Today, she navigates this journey with unwavering commitment and serves as a beacon of resilience and hope.
Beverly White is the Mayor of Lewisburg and a lifelong resident of Greenbrier County. Her election as mayor in 2019 marked a historic moment, as she was the first Black Mayor in the City of Lewisburg. This underlined the city's progress towards inclusivity, which, along with many other initiatives, was highlighted by its recognition as West Virginia's most inclusive city by WV Living in 2021. Before taking over as Mayor, she served on the city council for 16 years, becoming the first black woman to do so. Mayor White's journey from council member to mayor showcases her belief in collective action. It also highlights the importance of leadership and the power of dreaming big to create an inclusive, vibrant community.
J.D. Belcher is the producer of a new podcast mini-series titled "UBB: A Coal Miner's Story," which offers a detailed exploration of the tragic Upper Big Branch Mine disaster in April 2010. Josh Lewis is the founder of Grind Time Creative and Grind Time Training, both based in Charleston. Although not born in West Virginia, Josh is deeply rooted in Mountain State culture and has become a beloved community member through his decades of creative and passionate storytelling. Many people throughout the Kanawha Valley and beyond will recognize Josh as a former Sports Anchor at WCHS-TV, where he covered WVU, Marshall, and high school athletics. Now, Josh has transitioned into a full-time content creator for his media company, Grind Time Creative. Andrew Caridi is the Director of Broadcasting for West Virginia University Athletics. In this role, he hosts pre- and postgame shows for Mountaineer football and serves as the lead play-by-play personality for baseball and women's basketball. Peyton Ballard is the founder of Ballard Consulting Group and the Chief Executive Officer for Bluebirding, an innovative mobile application designed to empower private landowners to monetize their properties for outdoor recreation. The app, when in the entire operation, will be similar to Airbnb but for outdoor recreation. In 2020, Peyton was brought on by the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority (NRGRDA) to help establish an angel capital network known as Country Roads Angel Network. For the next three years, Peyton worked as the Director of Entrepreneurship Initiatives and Managing Director of CRAN. In January 2023, Peyton officially launched Ballard Consulting Group to pursue his vision of advancing businesses and organizations through management consulting.

Kelsey Riggi is the Director of Special Projects and Strategic Growth at Libera, a nonprofit addressing the societal pressures that prevent women and teens from reaching their full potential, specifically in West Virginia. Furthermore, Liberia started a popular social enterprise, The Lila Bear Explor(her) Club, a subscription box designed to tell the stories of Appalachian women & places, introducing STEAM education, encouraging outdoor exploration, boosting confidence and individual well-being. The boxes also give back to the Appalachian community by educating, employing, and empowering at-risk youth in West Virginia. Libera hopes to change the narrative for at-risk youth and help them find freedom in the Mountain State.
Justin Williams and Ashley Stinnett are the founders of the Film Futures Foundation, a nonprofit connecting the movie industry to Appalachia. Their work provides access to filmmaking resources, education, and opportunities, fostering a vibrant and inclusive film community in an underserved region. With the reestablishment of the West Virginia Film Tax Credit in 2022, the Mountain State is one of the most competitive states in the country for funding jobs. The state has already seen over 80 inquiries and has several projects being filmed. Currently, FFF's priorities are obtaining funding to put more gear into people's hands and fund their training programs, establishing a knowledge-based workforce ready for the film industry coming here. Their mission is to unlock the huge economic and storytelling potential of film in the region, shaping a brighter future for West Virginia and the Appalachian region. Matt Ballard is the Executive Director and CEO of the West Virginia Regional Technology Park in South Charleston. Today, the Tech Park has blossomed into a beating heart of research and development in the Kanawha Valley, supporting a dynamic workforce of about 900 people. Before this current position, Ballard served as the President and CEO of the Charleston Area Alliance and was the Executive Director at the Hatfield-McCoy Regional Recreation Authority. An ideal place to turn an abstract idea into a market-ready product, the Tech Park's main goal is to develop new technologies and diversify the economy of West Virginia. With a strong focus on energy, chemicals, materials, and biotechnology, this place is a hotbed for turning dreams into reality.
Ginny Thrasher is an Olympic Gold Medalist sport shooter and two-time NCAA national champion for West Virginia University. At the young age of 19, she clinched her place in history, winning the first gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the women's 10-meter air rifle. The feat catapulted her into the spotlight, instantly making her a household name across the Mountain State. However, she has experienced numerous setbacks since winning gold, such as missing the 2021 Tokyo Games and recovering from a career-threatening injury — a bulging disk. Nevertheless, she remains determined to make a comeback with her sights set on qualifying for the Paris Games, hopefully returning to the top of the podium. Thrasher's story is a testament to her perseverance, dedication, and unwavering confidence. Her journey to overcome challenges and return to the international stage is a shining example of hope and encouragement.
John Kruk is a beloved sports personality and former MLB All-Star who played for the Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame in 2011. Lori McKinney is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the RiffRaff Arts Collective in Mercer County, which aims to inspire and empower creativity in Southern West Virginia and the Appalachian region. Under her leadership, the Collective has organized various cultural events, ranging from small art shows and concerts to large-scale festivals such as the Culturefest World Music and Arts Festival. Master Gunnery Sergeant Peter Wilson served as a member of "The President's Own" United States Marine Chamber Orchestra for 30 years, serving five Presidents and playing for several others during his tenure. Junior Walk is the outreach coordinator for Coal River Mountain Watch, a small non-profit working in communities impacted by the irresponsible practices of the coal industry in southern West Virginia. Junior uses his drone and patrols mountaintop removal sites to keep watch for violations with the mission to stop the destruction of our communities and environment by mountaintop removal mining, to improve the quality of life in our area, and to help rebuild sustainable communities.
