Today our expert guest is Andy Molinsky, a Professor at Brandeis University's International Business School with a joint appointment in the Department of Psychology and the author of Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge and Build Confidence. Andy's work blends social psychology, organizational behavior, and cross-cultural communication to help people develop the insights and courage necessary to act outside their personal and cultural comfort zones when doing important (but challenging) tasks in work and life. “Cultural differences are really important – but what's even more important is that it's really hard to take that knowledge about cultural differences and put it into action.” So Andy developed The Cultural Code, a concept that will help you understand cultural differences in any situation or culture. To help you pinpoint the challenges you might run into in any given situation, you can look at it through six different lenses: Directness Enthusiasm Formality Assertiveness Self-promotion Personal disclosure By looking at what's expected in those situations, you can find the gap between what's comfortable and what's expected – and then, with awareness around your actions, step outside of your cultural comfort zone to make things happen, if necessary. And as technology breaks down the physical barriers between countries, businesses are also increasingly virtual and interconnected. So how can we use this understanding to create great virtual teams? In his book Global Dexterity, Andy explains that there are three core challenges to adapting and adjusting your behavior across cultures: Authenticity - You may not feel yourself Competence - You may even feel that people think you're bad at what you're doing Resentment - You know the old adage, “When in Rome,” but now that you're actually in Rome, you may be questioning why, exactly, you have to do as they do. Logically, you need to adapt – but psychologically, it can be quite frustrating. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all version of adapting and adjusting your behaviors across cultures. You have to arm yourself with knowledge, in each situation. “You need to find a place in that culture where you can be appropriate and effective, which is of course important if you want to achieve your goals, but without losing who you are in the process – and the way you do that is by customizing, tweaking, and finding your version!” If you want somewhere easy to start, though, you can also check out Andy's free 10 Cultural Codes From Around the World Cheat Sheet. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Take action. We can be in our heads, we can think of all the sorts of ways we might want to do something or ambitions that we might have for ourselves, but I really think there is something to taking that leap. And I don't think you should go blind – but I do think that strategically, thoughtfully taking action and taking that leap can really be life changing. -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Dov Baron is a leadership and corporate cultural strategist who has been named by Inc. magazine as one of the Top 100 Leadership Speakers. He is the host and producer of the “Full Monty Leadership” radio show and a bestselling author. In June 1990 while free rock climbing, Dõv Baron fell approximately 120 feet and landed on his face. The impact shattered most of the bone structure of his face, disintegrating some of his upper jaw and fracturing his lower jaw in four places. After nine reconstructive surgeries, no external evidence remains of the damage however, this experience was life changing. Before the fall, Dov had spent years building a reputation as a dynamic speaker and teacher in the field of personal and professional development but it wasn’t until sometime after ‘the fall’ he began to see the beauty and elegance of what had really happened… The return to his own CORE, what he calls his ‘Authentic Self’. Today, Dov is the bestselling author of several books including his latest: “Fiercely Loyal.” Dov has interviewed and worked with leaders featured on: Oprah, Ellen, CNN, Fox, MSNBC, CBS, Huffington Post, Larry King, New York Times, Washington Post, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal and many other top rated media. Tony Robbins likes to say that, "The quality of your life is in direct proportion to the amount of uncertainty you can comfortably deal with." So, let me ask you: how often do you leave your comfort zone? As tough as that can be, our guest today says it is this very practice that often leads to success. I can vouch for that. Getting laid off in 2009 was a very uncomfortable, uncertain time in my life. But I didn't cower. I didn't play the victim and I credit so much of my success today to that unexpected kick in the pants back in the day. But, back to our guest, Andy Molinksy, he's a popular professor at Brandeis University who has delivered a tremendous book on this topic called Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge and Build Confidence. In it he helps people conquer the uncomfortable so they can succeed. This is Andy's second book. His first book, Global Dexterity, was a huge success receiving the Axiom Award for best business book in international business and globalization. Organizations around the world have used this book including the US Air Force Academy and the Clinton Foundation. To learn more visit www.somoneypodcast.com.
Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge and Build Confidence ~ Andy Molinsky What often sets successful people apart is their willingness to do things most of us fear. What’s more, we have the false notion that successful people like to do these things, when the truth is that successful people have simply found their own way to do them. According to Andy Molinsky, an expert on behavior in the business world, there are five key challenges underlying our avoidance tendencies: authenticity, competence, resentment, likability, and morality. Does the new behavior you’re attempting feel authentic to you? Is it the right thing to do? Answering these questions will help identify the “gap” in our behavioral style that we can then bridge by using the three C’s: Clarity, Conviction, and Customization. Andy Molinsky is a Professor of International Management and Organizational Behavior at Brandeis University's International Business School, with a joint appointment in the Department of Psychology. He is also the author of the book Global Dexterity: How to Adapt Behavior Across Cultures Without Losing Yourself in the Process. Andy Molinsky is a Professor at Brandeis University's International Business School, with a joint appointment in the Department of Psychology. His new book Reach discusses ways to know yourself better and break outside your comfort zone. A simple exercise you can implement today is to confront that thing you're fearing, imagine the worst case scenario, then the ideal/perfect version, then the realistic version, and decide on the probability for each of the three. Andy says that some or all of the five pain points holding you back are authenticity, likability, competence, resentment, and morality. Listen in as you can realize that thing you were procrastination doing wasn't so bad at all, and making progress will get you to break that cycle of avoidance. We can face demanding challenges, wondering if we have what it takes, hesitating to go "all in" because of the risk of failure. Delivering bad news is something leaders have to do, but rarely do we look forward to it. These are just a few of the challenges we face as leaders--each requiring us to reach beyond our comfort zone. It's one thing to know that good things are on the other side of our comfort zone. But just telling someone to "take the leap" seems to be insufficient, right? Andy Molinsky has studied why we hesitate to go beyond our comfort zones, and he's written a practical, evidence-based book on how to make the leap. Sure. Feeling safe and at ease is great and all, but what goals have you ever achieved by staying in your comfort zone?? We’re willing to bet on not many at all. Nobody ever achieves much by staying in their comfort zone. WHY? Well, achieving goals requires you to aim for something just a little bit out of your reach. Having a goal makes you look forward to something attainable that may not be in your comfort zone (at the moment). The question of how and when to reach out of our comfort zones comes up. When it comes to career change, more likely than not you’ll be faced with the choice to break out of your comfort zone to progress down a new path that may be full of unknowns. You can look at your career change in one of two ways: An exciting opportunity to experience something new and grow your skills and knowledge A big unknown that causes you to feel uncomfortable with the wonder of the what ifs that lead you to revert back and settle in your current job situation But, the benefits of getting comfortable with feeling uncomfortable far outweigh staying in the little bubble of your comfort zone. Today, Andy Molinsky - an expert on behavior in the business world and author of the new book, Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside of Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge, and Build Confidence, joins us on the podcast. He shares insight on: The 5 key challenges underlying our avoidance tendencies when it comes to uncomfortable situations How to overcome these challenges to achieve your career change goals The surprising discoveries you make about yourself as you continue to face your fears by stepping out of your comfort zone Listen to my chat with Andy on how to Reach Out of Your Comfort Zone to learn the steps you can take to develop a framework to get comfortable turning whatever you are most afraid of doing and positioning yourself to achieve your goals in your career and life.

Andy Molinsky author of “Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone” is on the podcast. Everyone can learn better ways to push themselves and step outside of their comfort zone. Andy and Mike help show listeners how to get there. If we can’t find ways to sacrifice comfort, how do we obtain future success? There is some truth to living on the edge of your comfort zone. However, sometimes it is perfectly OK to stay in your comfort zone, like trading in the stock market. There are times to play it safe and there are times to take the leap. Often there is a lot of work that goes into taking a leap that is commonly overlooked. Having a person to hold you accountable, push you, or just let you know when an idea is good or not can be a critical building block to your success. How you execute an idea is also monumental to creating success. Taking uncomfortable steps is often necessary to get projects off the ground. Andy uses the story of Neil Kennedy as an example. Neil had a comparable website to Facebook before Facebook was around. He was shy and uncomfortable talking to venture capitalists and wasn’t able to move forward in getting his project off the ground. Because of this, Facebook succeeded and Neil failed. Five core challenges to stepping out of your comfort zone that Andy points out are: 1. Authenticity challenge 2. Likeability challenge 3. Competence challenge 4. Resentment challenge and 5. Morality challenge. You may not experience all of these challenges but they are a nice road map to help single out your weak points. Mike and Andy finish up their conversation talking about presentations and how to engage an audience. In this episode of Trend Following Radio: Stepping outside your comfort zone Accepting failure Creating challenges of yourself Fear of failure as motivation How to present in front of an audience

It's easy to become stagnant in our comfort zones. Many of us never leave, and adapt habits, tasks, and jobs based on our default personalities. What if I told you stepping outside of your comfort zone didn't take one big leap? You can still create a life that is ever expanding, with new strategies and confidence building by taking smaller steps and creating a sense of conviction. Andy Molinsky joins us today to tell us how. Andy Molinsky is a professor of organizational behavior and psychology at Brandeis University. He regularly writes for the Harvard Business Review and has been featured in the Economist, Fast Company, The Financial Times, The Boston Globe, NPR, and the Voice of America. He has written “The Global Dexterity,” which received the Axiom Award for best business book and has been used widely in organizations across the globe! Kevin's most recent book is “Reach: A New Strategy to help You Reach Outside Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge, and Build Confidence.” WARRIOR OF COURAGE “Taking the big leap isn't the only option you have.” -Andy Molinsky Highlights - Always follow your passion and what you believe and love to do. No success in business is ever worth your reputation. It is hard to do things that make us anxious, even if they contribute to our growth. We gravitate towards habits, jobs, or tasks that align with our default personalities. There are a myriad of ways that you can customize the situation you are in. People can be afraid that others won't like this new version of themselves -- you have to let that go. Sometimes the reason for being stuck in our comfort zone is a deep fear of others not liking us. Andy Molinsky, professor of organizational behavior at Brandeis International Business School, discusses practical techniques for getting outside of your comfort zone, and how that can develop new capabilities and experiences that can help your career. His new book is “Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge and Build Confidence.”
Today's interview is with ATBN favorite Andy Molinsky! He's back!!!! And today we are celebrating his new book: Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge and Build Confidence. Perhaps most interesting, Molinsky has discovered that many people who confront what they were avoiding come to realize that they actually enjoy it, and can even be good at it. Really excited to have Andy share the story of his book with you all. Order your book here:... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
