Yup… we're doing it. In 2021 I sat across the table From Lewis Howes and his beautiful now-wife, Maria, listening to them gush over their then-new relationship… and how from Day One, therapy was a non-negotiable. Both individually and as a couple, they committed to working on themselves to give such a special union the best chance possible.I've never forgotten that.Fast forward to one year ago when I met Ryan, I immediately knew he was special. Our connection was special. And more than anything… it is a thing worth protecting and growing. Patterns are a real thing. And to be honest, I have more than a bag of destructive patterns…individually and relationally. I'm aware enough to know these days that if I don't continue to peel back the layers of healing, I will continue to repeat those patterns which have destroyed precious things historically. This podcast is about that. And it's about how over the last year Ryan and I have both committed to diving in head first.Relationships are mirrors… and sometimes those damn mirrors are hard to look into. But only by allowing the mirrors to be held up, can we become aware of our blind spots and ultimately (hopefully) evolve into two people who can hold a healthy relationship. :)This conversation touches on communication, self-awareness, people-pleasing, vulnerability, and the courage it takes to be fully seen by another person. We explore how our past experiences still shape the way we show up today and why healthy relationships often reveal the parts of ourselves that still need attention. In this episode, we discuss:Why personal growth doesn't stop when you find the right relationshipThe relationship patterns we never want to repeatHow unspoken expectations can create distance and resentmentThe challenge of balancing ambition, family, friendships, and connectionWhat vulnerability actually looks like in a healthy relationshipThe fears and insecurities that still show up for both of usChoosing curiosity over defensiveness during difficult conversationsHow growth often begins where comfort endsMore than anything, this episode is a reminder that the strongest relationships aren't built by two perfect people. They're built by two people willing to keep learning, keep communicating, and keep choosing each other through every season of growth. Here are the key moments from the episode:00:00 What Happens When Old Patterns Return04:03 Why We're Finally Talking About Long Distance07:07 Redefining What “Failed” Relationships Really Mean10:23 Can the Honeymoon Phase Actually Last Forever?13:19 When Your Partner Notices Every Tiny Shift16:11 The Fear of Being Fully Seen18:06 When People-Pleasing Starts Stealing Your Peace21:56 The Pattern Heidi Refuses to Repeat26:16 Why We Chose Therapy Before Things Broke29:21 The Truth About High Expectations in Love33:36 When Independence Makes Partnership Harder36:52 Becoming the Average of the Right People37:43 Losing Yourself to Be Loved40:10 What Comes Next After the Therapy Intensive41:47 Why Therapy Is a Tool, Not a Last Resort43:31 Awareness Is Where Real Change BeginsConnect with Heidi:Website: https://heidipowell.net/Email: podcast@heidipowell.netInstagram: @realheidipowellFacebook: Heidi PowellYouTube: @RealHeidiPowellTrain with Heidi on her Show Up App: https://www.showupfit.app/

What if the sacrifices you make aren't actually about service... but identity? In this episode of Friday Field Notes, Ryan Michler breaks down the dangerous trap many men fall into: building their entire identity around suffering, responsibility, and sacrifice. Drawing from philosophy, psychology, and personal experience, Ryan explores how men unconsciously become martyrs - believing their worth is tied to how much pain they can endure. From Carl Jung's concept of the persona and shadow, to Stoic philosophy and Sartre's idea of "bad faith," this episode challenges men to ask a difficult question: Are you sacrificing for something... or sacrificing as something? Today's episode "When the Strategies Aren't Enough: Teaching ELs without Losing Yourself," is a reintroduction to The ESL Teaching Podcast, marking a new season of growth and transformation. Here are a few key ideas you'll here: A Personal Break and Burnout: I am sharing why I stepped away from the podcast for several months (July through December 2025) - to recover from complete burnout from teaching, over-giving, and grieving the loss of a loved one. This break prompted a necessary pause and a shift in perspective. The 'Inner Classroom': We are shifting focus from solely teaching strategies and lesson plans to the internal state of the teacher, which I call the "inner classroom." The argument is that no external strategy will be enough if the teacher's inner state is chaotic, exhausted, or depleted. The Podcast's New Direction: The podcast will continue to cover practical EL teaching strategies, scaffolding, and effective instruction, but it will also become a "bridge between pedagogy and self-preservation." Topics will expand to include:Teacher energy and boundaries.Sustainability in teaching.Coaching (professional and personal).Acknowledging teaching as emotional, relational, and human work.Invitation and Free Resource: I am inviting you to stay, subscribe, and be part of a space where you don't have to pretend you are fine. **This interview was filmed on November 29th, prior to the heartbreaking and tragic events in Bondi over the weekend. Our hearts are with everyone in Australia during this incredibly difficult time. __________ Today, Jay travels to Australia to sit down with Chris Hemsworth at the Crystalbrook Byron, not the superhero the world knows, but the grounded, introspective man shaped by his upbringing in the Australian outback. Chris opens up about his early years living in an Indigenous community, the adventures that sparked his imagination, and the strong family roots that still keep him centered. Jay explores how those moments from Chris’s childhood laid the foundation for the man he is today. Chris opens up about the pressure and anxiety he faced in the early stages of his acting career and how the pursuit of excellence often came at the cost of inner peace. He talks about the constant pull between ambition and being present, the balance of preparation and surrendering to the creative process and the grounding force of lifelong friendships. In one of the most personal moments of the conversation, Chris talks about learning of his father’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis and how it changed his relationship with time, family, and legacy. He reflects on the emotional experience of documenting their journey together, navigating memory loss, caregiving, vulnerability, and the urgency it created to slow down and show up fully for the people who matter most. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Stay Present in a High-Pressure Career How to Reconnect With Your Childhood Self How to Build True, Grounding Friendships How to Be Fully There for Aging Parents How to Slow Down and Be Intentional With Your Time How to Balance Ambition With Inner Peace How to Bring More Curiosity Into Relationships We forget sometimes that the best parts of life aren’t about achievement or perfection. They’re about being present, staying connected, and having the courage to show up. Every challenge and moment of doubt is a chance to look inward and reconnect with what really matters. The Power of Losing Yourself in Love: In today's Gospel, Jesus reminds us that those who truly love are willing to “lose” their lives. Real love means sacrifice, giving yourself for others, and trusting that God restores what we surrender. We reflect on how self-giving love builds a Culture of Life and reveals God's plan for redemption through sacrifice.

The squad welcomes UC Joff (aka Oochie Walle) to the studio, kicking things off with an inside look at his experience on Artlette's viral "Pop the Balloon" YouTube series before diving into his upcoming music projects. The ice breaker sparks immediate debate with a provocative parenting question: Would you rather have a daughter who's a "2/10" or a "10/10" on the attractiveness scale? The responses reveal much about each host's values and concerns. The music scene brings heat: Millyz delivers with "Blanco 7," Wiz Khalifa revisits a classic with "Kush And OJ 2," Mozzy gets introspective with "Intrusive Thoughts," Davido drops "5ive," Kanye keeps it in the family with "Cousins," and Tommy Richmond links with Sexyy Red for "Acting Up." The news cycle is wild: Ye controversy erupts, R. Kelly's unusual phone performances from prison raise eyebrows, Shannon Sharpe faces legal troubles, the world mourns Pope Francis, and the NBA playoffs keep everyone talking. Things get deep in relationships as UC Joff joins the squad tackling some thought-provoking questions: How family dynamics influence toxic relationships, how many heartbreaks one can endure, the politics of competitive play with your partner, the risks of ex-friendships, and finding the balance between compromise and identity loss. With UC Joff bringing both entertainment industry experience and musical perspective, this episode delivers the perfect blend of insider stories, music analysis, and relationship real talk that's made JSC your weekly must-listen! #JSC #PopTheBalloon #RelationshipTalk #kanyewest #celebritynews #drake #musicindustryinsights CHAPTERS: 00:00 - Intro 00:54 - Joe Budden Podcast Ensemble Review & Queenz Flip Blocks Ape on Social Media 05:28 - Welcome OOCHIE WALLE! 06:49 - Oochie on Arlette's Pop The Balloon Show (Episode 45) 16:36 - What Type of Drake Do You Like? 30:00 - Would You Rather Have a 2/10 or 10/10 Daughter? 39:30 - Tommy Richmond & Sexy Red Single Review 52:53 - Mozzy - Intrusive Thoughts 1:04:00 - Millyz Drops Blanco 7 Album 1:17:45 - Wiz Khalifa Kush & OJ 2 Drops 1:24:10 - Freestyling vs Writing 1:26:11 - Music's Longevity Factors 1:30:48 - Kanye West - Cousins Review 1:39:44 - Kanye's Controversial Tweets 1:48:23 - R. In this episode, Sean Fargo speaks with George Thompson about how he found Tai Chi and his teacher, Master Gu. They discuss Thompson's latest film, The Subtle Art of Losing Yourself. The film is a retelling of the story of our relationship with nature and addresses the root causes of environmental and mental health challenges. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why having an inner critic is a shared human experience How Tai Chi and Taoism relate to mindfulness Why movement is a significant part of mindfulness practice The benefits of cultivating breath-to-movement connection Why true mindful observation leads to self-compassion What nature has to teach us about interconnectedness Why it's time to retell the story of our role in nature How to use storytelling to help others find their own Learn more about your ad choices. Deconstruction invites us to become really honest about what we believe, why we hold those beliefs sacred, how they influence the way we relate to our creator, and who is actually served by our beliefs. If we trust the process enough to lower our walls and honestly engage with our questions, deconstruction promises to reveal undiscovered bias, limiting beliefs, and any flawed doctrines that actively harm people. - Angela J. HerrringtonBack for round two, Angela J. Herrington, comes on the podcast as our guest this week. We are doubly-thrilled to have her back! Angela is a deconstructing mama to five kiddos, a deconstruction coach and as of late, an author to a brand-new book!Whether you are deconstructing due to curiosity, uncertainty, or a compelling inner voice, Angela helps you explore the deeply personal journey of faith deconstruction compassionately and without judgment. Together, the two of you will slog through the uncertainties and complexities of faith deconstruction. Laughing, crying, and raging against the toxic religious machine together. On this podcast episode, we find out why Angela is so passion about writing her new book Deconstructing your Faith without Losing Yourself and especially tackle these questions:1. Is deconstruction a trend? Why or why not?2. How do we navigate deconstruction without losing what feels like our core selves?3. What tools are there to sort through our ideas and beliefs and why is a sense of autonomy/internal authority so important in this process?4. How do we navigate the resentments that we might still hold for our old church, family members, belief systems? We also discover what hope there is for our kids as we navigate a shifting and evolving faith, especially perhaps the importance of a relationship with themselves, so vital and different than perhaps the way we grew up.Angela is feisty and fantastic (if we say so ourselves). One day Angela Herrington had an epiphany. She loved God but realized the conservative Christian movement she was in was teaching some really toxic stuff. Join Michael and Angela's conversation about what faith deconstruction is, why it's so crucial, and how to address its critics. Angela shares from her heart and the wellspring of wisdom in her new book, Deconstructing Your Faith Without Losing Yourself. Learn why deconstruction is not just the latest trend, what toxic religion is, and what you need on a deconstructing journey to ensure you're not losing yourself and not warping historical facts. “In faith deconstruction, we are not dismantling every belief we have until there is no belief left. Instead, we are examining, sifting, and sorting what we believe to determine how it aligns with who we believe God to be.” Angela is a faith deconstruction coach, a certified life coach, and seminary-trained online pastor. “After this week, things will start to settle down…” What other lies do we tell ourselves? Yeesh. In this week's episode, motherhood wellness expert Alyson Hempsey and women's health expert and pelvic floor physical therapist Dr. Marcy Crouch are NOT discussing any one thing in particular. "Who we are is not our pain." -Greg Wieting Trauma is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation. However, living with trauma isn't really ideal, especially if it's causing us to act out in destructive ways or making us withdraw and isolate ourselves from the people closest to us. Trauma can also manifest itself in physical ways. We might start experiencing headaches, body pain, or problems with our digestion. We might find it hard to fall asleep, or we might start having nightmares. Many times, people who have experienced trauma don't even realize that they're suffering from it. They just think that they're having a really bad day, or that they're just overwhelmed with work. So how do we know if our pain is a symptom of trauma or not? In this episode, I sit with Greg Weiting, the Founder of PRISMA. He developed the Prisma Method from his own healing journey. Today, Greg is helping leaders, students, and individuals heal their trauma from the roots. Listen in as Greg and I discuss the imprints of trauma so we can easily identify it, how trauma manifests itself in leadership and our relationships, how our healthcare system is failing us with regards to healing the root causes of our pain, and how we can reorient ourselves and ultimately heal from our trauma. Kate Wolf and Eric Newman are joined by the historian and MacArthur Fellow Natalia Molina to discuss her most recent book, A Place at the Nayarit: How a Mexican Restaurant Nourished A Community. The book follows Molina's maternal grandmother, Doña Natalia Barraza, who immigrated to Los Angeles from Mexico in the 1920s and went on to open a series of restaurants. The most successful and longest lasting was the Nayarit, which opened on Sunset Blvd in Echo Park in 1951. The Nayarit served the ethnically diverse and historically progressive and queer neighborhood for over two decades. As Molina shows, it was a refuge for the city's Latinx community, many of whom were recent arrivals in the United States. At the Nayarit they “could come together for labor, leisure, and access to a ready-made social network,” and this act alone would shape the face of Los Angeles for years to come. Also, Orressa Moshfegh, author of Lapvona returns to recommend Dr. Mike Bechtle's The People Pleaser's Guide to Loving Others without Losing Yourself.
