Eventually you'll get there. You can't see very far ahead of you, but as long as you keep moving forward slowly, you're heading in the right direction. You will get there or somewhere close to there.”“Oftentimes there are more routes to a potential destination than you might imagine.”“Short term thinking is good when it's good. But it's not good all the time. Because when it's compounded, it means that you're never setting a proactive agenda. All you're doing is reacting to external stimuli.”“As long as you have the ambition, as long as you understand what the destination is, you just have to have one crucial thing, which is the next step.”“Confidence, to me, is about having an internal locus of control, rather than relying on other people to dictate your worth…And I believe in the power of a low bar. That gives us confidence.” Connect with Dorie:⭐ Connect on Instagram @dorieclark⭐ Connect on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dorieclarkauthor/⭐ Connect on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/doriec/⭐ Twitter: https://twitter.com/dorieclark⭐ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/DorieClark Connect with Allison:⭐ Connect on Instagram @allisonwalsh⭐ JOIN OUR FREE COMMUNITY: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shebelievedshecouldcommunity⭐ Check out book recommendations from the show here⭐ Download your free 90 day planner here

She is the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Long Game, Entrepreneurial You, Reinventing You, and Stand Out, which was named the #1 Leadership Book of the Year by Inc. magazine. Dorie may have had a lot of doors closed before opening some for herself by building up her own network and leaning into what she loves. She kept an eye on the change in the PR industry and to adapt to the fast-growing social media world. She now has worked for herself for the past 16 years and has written four books. Dorie observes that a lot has changed in the corporate world post-COVID. Employees will leave companies if they want to and it is up to the employers to proactively provide the tools and room for their people to thrive. For the past six years Dorie has given herself some time to pursue other interests and passions, 20% of her time to be exact. She has been following a new passion and has learned how to write for musical theater and just finished her first project. Some powerful takeaways from today's episode: Lean into what you love and figure out how to make the money later Learn how to build your network for the long run Make people notice you and then appreciate you - empower yourself to access the opportunities you want Use the “what have you been up to?” question to your benefit Employers should give people the tools they need to learn and expand their fields if wanted - far more likely to stay Reinvention can be pro-corporate Understand that we are entitled to live the life that we want Feeling so busy - being busy is a form of social status Links: Dorie Clark's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/doriec/ THE RE:INVENTION EXCHANGE - for more Inspired Content, Blogs, Podcasts, Virtual Chats, or to buy a copy of my book RE:INVENT YOUR LIFE! The world seems to be moving faster and faster but there is always a need to plan for the longer arc of life. Having a strategy lets you set short goals while achieving progress toward your longer ones. Now more than ever people need to be intentional about the strategies they use in creating a career. Building these strategies in different areas of your life is what today's episode is all about.Dorie Clark is a teacher at Duke and Colombia University's business schools, a speaker who has given lectures from Harvard Business School to Google HQ, and a prolific author of the books Stand Out, Reinventing You, Entrepreneurial You, and her newest book The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World. Dorie and Greg talk about playing the long game, and what that means in your business life and personal life. They also talk about what it looks like to think long term in a world where short term needs are always pressing, and how to think about time allocation for the important things in life.Episode Quotes:The power of stories for behavioral change24:08: A story is a really good way to get in the side door. So that it's essentially evading people's objections because if you're telling somebody: “research says…”, "Do this or do that," there's often just a lot of backlash that people have:” I couldn't do that.” But if they're hearing a narrative, which is not, "Oh, you have to do this," but it's, "Well, here, let me tell you about somebody you know, like you, who did that thing," And they realize, it's a lot less threatening of a way to present information, and it lets it roll around in people's brains and say, "Oh, I'm not that different from that person. Maybe I could try it.' And that can become really powerful.02:48: There's almost no one in the world that thinks that strategy is a bad thing. It's not like there's an anti-strategy contingent arguing against it. Everybody thinks it's good. Everybody pays lip service to it. But the problem is that almost no one does it.Why do we need a coach?25:38: The answer is we don't always. Sometimes a book is perfectly sufficient for what you want to do. It depends on how important the issue is to you and how detailed of an instruction you require.Overweighting our short-term thinking can be a liability17:50: If we're investing money, if we're investing our finances, everybody understands that if your portfolio is overweight in a certain asset, that may be great while that asset is performing well, but it is extremely dangerous over the long term because there probably is going to be some reversal.Show Links:Guest Profile:Instructor's Profile on UdemySpeaker's Profile on TEDTalkSpeaker's Profile on WeSpeakersDorie Clark's WebsiteThe Long Game: Your Stretegic Thinking Self-AssessmentDorie Clark on LinkedInDorie Clark on TwitterDorie on YoutubeDorie Clark on YoutubeDorie Clark on TEDXBostonTrajectory MastermindHer Work:Articles on Harvard Business ReviewThe Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term WorldReinventing You, With a New Preface: Define Your Brand, Imagine Your FutureEntrepreneurial You: Monetize Your Expertise, Create Multiple Income Streams, and Thrive

Episode Highlights Leading with “the fun part” … I kicked off the interview by asking Dorie about some of her interesting activities like investing in Broadway shows and producing jazz albums. This led her to one of the big ideas of her latest book The Long Game … Optimize for interesting. “We're often told to follow our passion but many don't know what their passion is—they have passion shame.” That's why Dorie encourages people to optimize for what's interesting in their lives. If there's a seed of something you like, work to add more of that in your work. In turn, this helps you stand out as a personal brand. What if you're stuck? What if you don't know what the inserting part of your life is? Dorie had a couple of idea starters for this. “First, what did you like to do as a kid? Chances are, you still like the same things now.” You'll have to listen to the show for her other handy hacks. “I look for positive constraints in business,” says Dorie. “Constraints can make us more creative and efficient.” She then noted Parkinson's Law, which says that work will expand to fill the time allotted. What brand has made Dorie smile recently? Dorie cited the fun summer (and sustainable) shoe brand Suavs for all of the good they're doing with their innovative products. “We all consume too much plastic. It's good to see someone doing something about it.” To learn more about Dorie and to take her free self-assessment that goes with The Long Game, head to dorieclark.com/thelonggame. Dorie Clark is a consultant and keynote speaker who teaches executive education at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and Columbia University's Graduate School of Business. She has been named one of the top fifty business thinkers in the world by Thinkers50 and the #1 Communication Coach in the world by the Marshall Goldsmith Leading Global Coaches Awards. Clark is a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review and is the author of Entrepreneurial You, Reinventing You, and Stand Out. Her books have been translated into eleven languages. Highlights: “Really what I focus my work on is helping people and helping companies, figure out in the very crowded marketplace, how they can get their best ideas heard.” [7:20] Dorie Clark introduces the inspiration behind her work and her book, The Long Game. “During COVID, it's almost like forget the long term game, everybody's all of a sudden in reactionary mode. How do we pivot!?” [10:05] Marcel comments on the broad shift in short term versus long term thinking due to COVID-19 and changes necessary from the pandemic shutdown. “We're forced into doing long term thinking, if there are specific goals we want to attain.” [14:10] Why is long term thinking so hard? Dorie shares a quote she included in her book as she explains the motivation and pain points surrounding long term thinking. “Why is it that we can't stop this relentless, short term, crazy busy, ‘FOMO'. ‘I can't measure myself up to the standards of these celebrities' that causes a lot of anxiety for me, and unrealistic expectations. We just get busier, and busier, and busier. So how do we stop this pursuit?” [16:00] Marcel questions why we as a culture feel the need to be unrealistically busy. “I threw myself into work, as a way of just distracting myself. The way that I think about it is like how they put patients into a medically induced coma so that their body can heal, because if they were awake they just couldn't take it. So work can be like your medically induced coma.” [21:12] Dorie shares a personal experience in her reasoning for throwing herself into work and staying busy. Making the comparison to overworking as a “medically induced coma”. “All the forces are going to be mitigating against it. Because it's always more convenient for other people if you say yes to them. So nobody is going to help you with this.” [23:48] It's easy and sometimes the right thing to say yes often when you're early on in your career. But Dorie stresses that at a pivotal point in your business you have to start farming the things that are already working and no longer hoping that every small opportunity might turn into something. “So one of the ways that we can really focus on the long term, is having a clear, defining...North Star.” [26:51] Marcel asks Dorie to elaborate on what it means to find your North Star, the idea of reinventing yourself or instead remaining stagnant. “The strength that we have as professionals, and the thing that actually makes us valuable, is understanding that different things, different skills, are called for at different times. And you have to be smart enough to understand when and how to apply those skills. ”[31:20] Dorie explains the 4 career waves in her book: Learning, Creating, Connecting and Reaping.
