This episode is a little different... With this being the Holiday Season 2022, I want to talk a little about some of the holidays that happen this December. We are taking a hiatus until the 10th of January  so this is the final show of season 3... I'm going to mention a few of the holidays coming up..with a little info on each of them. Dec 18th Hannukah began Dec 18th this year and continues for 8 nights until de 26th The Jewish Festival of Rededication, also called the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day celebration that falls each year on the Hebrew calendar date of 25 Kislev, which generally falls in December in the Gregorian calendar. (In 2022, Hanukkah is December 18 through December 26.) Hanukkah, also referred to as Chanukah, celebrates the rededication of the second Jewish temple in Jerusalem. The holiday is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games, and gifts. Dec 21st  Blue Christmas (US) Blue Christmas is a Western Christian tradition that happens on or around the longest night of the year, usually December 21 the Winter Solstice. It is about comforting fellow Christians who are grieving and struggling to find joy and hope during the season. Winter Solstice The Winter Solstice marks the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere), all thanks to the tilt of the earth. In many cultures, the day is a day of feasting and celebration, but even if you're totally agnostic, you can still find a reason to rejoice, because after today, you'll see gradually shorter nights and longer days, which means you can look forward to the emergence of spring. Yule (UK) Yule comes up on December 21, on the winter solstice. It is the shortest day and longest night of the year, as the Sun gets its lowest elevation in the sky. Apart from the marking of a new season, the winter solstice also holds a significant symbol for the Sun. It appears to stand still on this day, it's believed that the Sun is going through a rebirth. It would then gain momentum after the solstice. The holiday also depicts several pagan beliefs, especially that of the Holly King handing over power to the Oak King, ushering in a new season of light. Dec 23rd  Festivus  Festivus is on December 23 and it's perfect for those who don't have a traditional holiday to celebrate. Although it sounds paradoxical, its purpose makes a lot of sense. Not everyone has a major holiday to celebrate like Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa and they can feel left out. This holiday gives many people a non-denominational and non-commercial holiday to call their own. Festivus is for everybody! Dec 25th Christmas Every year on December 25, we celebrate Christmas, a day for spending time with family, observing an important Christian holiday, partaking in lighthearted traditions, or just spreading some holiday cheer! Christmas has evolved over several millennia into a worldwide celebration that's both religious and secular and chock full of fun-filled, family activities. Dec 26th  Kwanzaa  Heri Za Kwanzaa! Kwanzaa, celebrated from December 26 to January 1, is an African American and pan-African seven-day cultural holiday that celebrates family and community. During the holiday, families celebrate with feasts, music, and dance, and end the holiday with a day dedicated to reflection and recommitment to the seven principles.  Boxing day Boxing Day is held every December 26th in many countries associated with the British empire. It started as a day to give gifts to the household staff of Britain's upper classes but has morphed into a sort of shopping holiday of its own. In fact, its one of the most popular days to return Christmas gifts to the stores. St Stephen's day in Ireland Dec 26th St. Stephen's Day is still referred to as the Day of the Wren, especially in rural Ireland. Due to its Catholic roots, St. Stephen's Day has been a holiday in Ireland for many years. It was only in 1871 that it became a public holiday after the Bank Holidays Act of 1871 was passed. Dec 28th National Call a Friend Day  Christmas is over and New Year's is on its way. But in the meantime, December 28 is National Call a Friend Day! Between the stress of the daily grind at work, the needs of your family, and ensuring you have a little time for yourself, our lives can get awfully hectic. National Call a Friend Day reminds us all to take a few minutes, pick up the phone, and call that friend you've been meaning to get back in touch with. In modern times, technology has the capacity to unite us more than ever before. The internet isn't fazed by distance, time zones, or how much money you have in the bank. But in our day to day lives of whizzing from one task to the next (or even multi-tasking on all our projects at once), technology often has the opposite effect. Checking emails, answering texts, responding to Facebook notifications, and other tech-based tasks can fill up our lives and actually make us feel less connected to the people we're spending all our time connecting with! So with the holiday season rapidly drawing to a close this year, make an effort on December 28 to reach out with a phone call and connect, voice to voice, with a good friend.   Dec 31st Hogmanay Hogmanay is a Scottish word meaning “the last day of the year.” It's celebrated in Scotland on New Year's Eve, when Scots host house parties and exchange gifts. The celebrations are often followed by parties on both New Year's Day and January 2, which is a bank holiday in Scotland. While the origins of Hogmanay are hard to pinpoint, its roots are thought to lie in Norse and Gaelic traditions. New Year's Eve New Year's Eve comes but once a year on December 31, the last day of the last month of what usually feels like the longest year ever but somehow passed too quickly. Most of us give little thought as to why we ceremoniously say goodbye to one year and hello to a new one on December 31.  Even those who don't make special plans to greet the arrival of a new year at the stroke of midnight on December 31 pay homage to the rite with thoughts of the year gone by and hopes for the year to come. This was a bit lighter fare, with a few interesting dates and information.  However,  this can be such a tough time of year for anyone.   Thinking of  each of you through this  often difficult time.    Many folks struggle during the holidays. Some people are overwhelmed with sadness. Some are simply overwhelmed.  Reach out and talk to someone.. say hello. to a neighbour, a store clerk, someone you pass on the street..    Smile   Facial expressions do more than express emotions, they also provide feedback to the brain, which influences our emotions.   A new global collaboration led by researchers at Stanford University has shown that even fake or posed smiles can make people feel happier.   May the light of the holidays bring warmth and love into your household, and here's to hoping for a better year ahead. Thank you for listening.  Season 3 of The suicide Zen Forgiveness podcast comes to a close..  I will be taking the next few weeks to take stock of the year that has passed...and prepare for the new year to come... Let us know if there are topics you would like me to cover..  Guests you would like me to talk with..  I will return on January 10th, 2023

The Rise of the Labor Movement & Employer Resistance in the Late 19th Century

Unsung History

After the Civil War, the simultaneous shift in the labor economy of the Southern United States and the second industrial revolution led to a growing interest in labor organizing. Newly formed labor organizations led a combined 23,000 strikes between 1881 and 1900. Employers noticed, and fought back, sometimes literally, employing Pinkerton agents to break strikes, rounding up and imprisoning or deporting union employees, and using various forms of intimidation against workers.  Joining me to help us learn much more about the story of employers and elites resisting labor rights is Dr. Chad. Pearson, a lecturer at the University of North Texas and author of Capital's Terrorists: Klansmen, Lawmen, and Employers in the Long Nineteenth Century. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode audio is “Labor Day” by Dick Wright & The Wright Trio, in the Public domain and available via the Internet Archive. The episode image is: “The labor troubles at Homestead, Pa. - Attack of the strikers and their sympathizers on the surrendered Pinkerton men,” drawn by Miss G.A. Davis, from a sketch by C. Upham. Updated at 3:45 p.m. Highway safety advocates are urging Wisconsin, other states, and the federal government to pass laws that the advocates say would keep thousands more drivers and passengers alive. A Milwaukee-area doctor is part of the push. Preliminary federal estimates for last year show vehicle miles traveled went down, presumably due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the fatality rate per miles traveled appears to have gone up. In Wisconsin, highway deaths rose by 43 over the total for 2019 to nearly 600. Cathy Chase, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, sums up last year this way: "Unfortunately, instead of our emptier streets leading to safer streets, our roadways have become reckless racetracks." Chase blames more speeding and impaired and distracted driving for the death rate going up. Her group, which is a coalition of insurance companies, law enforcement and public health officials, recently released its annual roadmap that rates all the states on whether they

On Tuesday, November 3, millions of people across the United States headed to the polls and cast their ballots as part of the 2020 elections. Along with over 100 million people who did early voting, this election is reported to be the largest turnout in 100 years. In a race that turned out to be much closer than had been predicted, Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris faced off against Donald Trump and Mike Pence. As of the time we go on the air, it remains still to early to project a winner in the presidential race. Votes are still being counted in Alaska, Arizona, North Carolina, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, Georgia and Pennsylvania, according to CNN. Biden holds the lead in the Electoral College at this stage, with 224 votes compared to Trump's 213. A total of 270 Electoral College votes are needed to become President. On Election Night, Trump won a tight race in Florida, bumped up by the Latino vote in Miami Dade County, where large Cuban and Venezuelan exile communities live. There, Trump won 51.2 percent of votes compared to Biden's 47.8. In Florida, Latinos make up 19 percent of all of the state's voters, according to Al Jazeera. In contrast, in Arizona, Latino voters favored Biden by nearly 2-1, with Trump barely making a dent. In Wisconsin, with more than 90 percent of votes counted, Biden holds a narrow lead over Trump. In Nevada, with 85 percent of the votes counted, Biden leads by less than a percentage point. Now, all eyes are on Michigan, where the clerk of Wayne County (a key suburb) says they are counting votes, with no foreseeable end in sight. Pennsylvania, a state which Trump falsely claimed he had won, is just beginning to count hundreds of thousands of early votes mailed in that are expected to be heavily in favor of Biden. Aside from the presidential race, a number of important developments have taken place. In the Senate race, as of Wednesday morning, Republicans are in the lead with 47 seats compared with the Democrats 45 seats. 51 seats are needed to form a majority. Republicans appear poised to maintain a narrow Senate majority after winning a number of tight races and with others remaining too close to call. The Republicans currently hold a 53-47 seat majority. Democrats need to win four seats to flip the Senate after Alabama Sen. Doug Jones lost to Republican Tommy Tuberville. Democrats have picked up a seat in Colorado, with John Hickenlooper defeating Republican Sen. Cory Gardner, and one in Arizona, with Democrat Mark Kelly, a former astronaut, beating GOP Sen. Martha McSally. Meanwhile, all four progressive congresswomen referred to as The Squad have all won reelection in the House of Representatives. They include Reps. Today on Sojourner Truth, our post-election special. Reaction, analysis and a view from poll watchers in Pennsylvania. We take you to the Commitment March where hundreds of thousands of people from around the nation gather at the Lincoln Memorial, 57 years after the iconic Martin Luther King speech, for the anticipated televised event, featuring speeches from Al Sharpton, the MLK family, and leaders from various cities. "Say Their Names" is a common theme of the day as speakers remember the recently fallen Black lives to police brutality. This episode shares speeches that received less airplay - those from resilient activists and parents who lost children to police force. We also talk with attendees who flew and drove hundreds miles to be there in Washington DC, representing their communities and organizations back home. We discuss their collective purpose to continue the fight for civil rights and to amplify Black voices. Today on Sojourner Truth: Today is Cinco de Mayo, a holiday with roots in Mexico, but, today, mainly celebrated in the United States. Amid the coronavirus, celebrations are tamped down this year, as we focus on the impact of the virus on the most vulnerable essential workers and the economic impact of the virus. This has resulted in a series of rent strikes across the country. We discuss Cinco de Mayo and its historic roots and more about the little-known Mexican history with Gabriel Buelna. Gabriel Buelna, PhD, holds a doctorate in political science from the Claremont School of Politics and Economics, is a faculty member in Chicana/o Studies at Cal State Northridge, and a Trustee at the Los Angeles Community College District. What is the situation on the ground in Mexico? Like other countries, Mexico is struggling against the coronavirus. Prior to the virus, what were the social movements making themselves heard in Mexico and what has been the government's response? What about the deal the government of Mexico was forced by the Trump administration to accept on the issue of migration? What are some of the sociopolitical and economic challenges facing Mexico today? Our guest is Jose Luis Granados Ceja, a writer and photojournalist based in Mexico City. He previously worked as a staff writer for teleSUR and currently works on a freelance basis. His stories focus on contemporary political issues, particularly those that involve grassroots efforts to affect social change. He often covers the work of social and labor movements in Latin America. What about immigrants to the United States from Mexico and South of the Border? What has been the impact of COVID-19 in terms of the health and economics of that community? Our guest is Kenia Alcocer is a community organizer with Union de Vecinos based in East Los Angeles and Co-Chair of the Poor People's Campaign - California, A National Call for Moral Survival.
