It's back to school season and we're back to taking listener requests! That's not really the theme of the episode, but it is true. This week we cover two listener requests for two versions of the same song! First up, we listen to "Nothing But a Child" as performed by Robin and Linda Williams for the Prairie Home Christmas compilation album or audiobook or live broadcast or whatever the case may actually be. Then we visit the original (and much twangier) version by Steve Earle. The ranking music in this episode is "A Baby Changes Everything" by Faith Hill. "Death to Videodrome! Long live the New Flesh!" It was perhaps inevitable that the modern Weird, driven as it is to swallow all things, would sooner or later veer into the realm of political sloganeering without losing any of its unknowable essence. David Cronenberg's 1983 film Videodrome is more than a masterwork of body horror: it is a study in technopolitics, a meditation on the complex weave of imagination and perception, and a prophecy of the now on-going coalescence of flesh and technology into a strange new alloy. In this episode, recorded live after a screening of the film at Indiana University Cinema (https://cinema.indiana.edu/index.html) in Bloomington, JF and Phil set out to interpret Cronenberg's vision... and come to dig the New Flesh. In the five years prior to the establishment of ACR, Linda was engaged in the treatment of individuals who abused substances. Her residence ended up serving as a kind of unofficial halfway house. Linda was connecting folks to resources, such as transporting them to the Harford County Health Department, doctor and therapist appointments, and detox with Dr. Hayes. She was also speaking for them in court and providing a large number of the other services that ACR currently offers. This was the idea of ACR when it was first conceived. The ghoulish trio explains how the film fits into a larger canon of horror films from the 1970s that expose cultural anxieties around displaced manhood, the dread of second wave feminism, and monstrous wives/children run amok. Drawing upon Linda Williams's theoretical framework about body genres in film—such as horror, pornography, and melodrama—our guests discuss The Brood's fun combination of reproductive horror and domestic melodrama that explores masculine anxiety, feminine monstrosity, and the return of the abject. This conversation delves into other horrifying historical depictions of women's mental health, as observations on mise-en-scéne find connections with Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” Our host and guests dream up merchandise items inspired by the film, like a Brood fashion line and microbrew. They also share their favorite horror films to watch in preparation for Halloween. In this episode, we discuss working with the best to become the best, profit sharing, how being small allows you to be unique, motivating and encouraging your people, being selective with who you allow on your team, having personal high-touch relationships with each of your guest, how your team is a reflection of who you are, and tieing good old fashioned manners and courtesy into your culture. It was over a half century ago when founders Jack and Linda Williams got hitched and began their lifetime dedication to the food industry. Along the way, they helped develop the concept for a well-known steakhouse chain and built 34 restaurants in two decades, becoming their largest and most successful franchisee. In 1989 Jack and Linda Williams would open the first Richie's Diner established in Temecula, California. Today there are a total of 3 Richies Diners and it continues to be a family owned and operated concept.
