With each day that passes we learn more about the importance of our gut health in relation to our overall health and well being.  Our GI system is directly correlated to many systems in our body. When this is off it throws everything off leading to hormone disturbances, anxiety, depression, brain fog, skin conditions, food allergies and obviously lots of GI upset. Our gut has influence on nearly every system in our body to the list of symptoms goes on and on. In Functional medicine we use the 5 R system to heal and repair the gut. Remove, Replace , Reinoculate, Repair and Rebalance. Remove :Includes removing foods and medications that may be irritating to the GI tract. The biggest culprits I see for intestinal inflammation are gluten, dairy and sugar . Other irritants include caffeine , alcohol, NSAIDS, antibiotics, antifungals, and Anti acids just to name a few. Start with eliminating these foods for several weeks, when you add them back watch for symptoms!Pathogens: If you are thinking you may have a bacterial or yeast overgrowth get tested, don't just try to treat it if you don't know what you are dealing with. Replace:Add back in the essential nutrients needed for proper break down and absorption of food such as digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid and bile acids. Ill talk about ways you can do this naturally and when to use supplementation. Reinoculate:Restore beneficial bacteria by taking in prebiotic and probiotic foods or supplements that contain “good” bacteria. Prebiotic's feed good bacteria and can be supplemented by consuming high soluble fiber foods like oats, dandelion root, chicory, banana, onions and garlic. Ill discuss probiotics and how to get them from foods and when to supplementsRepair- When the GI tract is in a diseased state it lacks key nutrients that help repair its lining . By supplying these nutrients we can help the lining repair itself . My favorite supplement for this is L-Glutamine.  Aloe,DGL and marshmallow root can all help soothe the mucosal lining for individuals with a lot of irritation . Vitamins A,C and E and zinc all help repair the intestinal lining. Lastly collagen which is rich in amino acids can help further seal the intestines, repair damage, and build new tissue.Rebalance:This one is such a big topic that i didn't not even get into it in this episode. This includes paying attention to your lifestyle habits. Stress, sleep , and excessive exercise can all negatively impact your GI tract. Stay tuned for future episodes where we will get into self care ,stress and how you can evaluate the things in your life that may be adding unwanted stressors to your system Here are the products I love to start on your healing journey! Most of us (including most doctors) do not recognize or know that digestive problems wreak havoc in the entire body, leading to allergies, arthritis, autoimmune disease, rashes, acne, chronic fatigue, mood disorders, autism, dementia, cancer, and more. So having a healthy gut means more than simply being free of annoyances like bloating or heartburn. It is absolutely central to your health. It is connected to everything that happens in your body. That is why Functional Medicine almost always starts helping people treat chronic health problems by fixing their gut.In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to review two patient cases focused on treating the gut.Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well. This episode is sponsored by AirDoctor. Learn more about the AirDoctor Professional Air Purifier system at a special price at www.drhyman.com/filterIn this episode, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Boham discuss:What is leaky gut, and why does it lead to so many other health issues, including food sensitivities? How our diet, food supply, over-reliance on antibiotics, acid blockers, steroids, and more can lead to leaky gutUsing stool testing and Cyrex testing to assess gut health. The ‘5R’ program (remove, replace, reinoculate, repair, and rebalance) that Functional Medicine uses as a guide to treat chronic issues. Remove stressors: get rid of things that negatively affect the environment of the GI tract including allergic foods and parasites or other bad bugs such as bacteria or yeast. This might involve using an allergy “elimination diet” to find out what foods are causing GI symptoms or it may involve taking drugs or herbs to eradicate a particular bug. Replace digestive secretions: add back things like digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid, and bile acids that are required for proper digestion and that may be compromised by diet, drugs, diseases, aging, or other factors.Reinoculate. Help beneficial bacteria flourish by ingesting probiotic foods or supplements that contain the so-called “good” GI bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacillus species, and by consuming the high soluble fiber foods that good bugs like to eat, called “prebiotics.” Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms found in the gut that are also called “friendly bacteria.” Use of antibiotics kills both good and bad bacteria. Probiotics in the form of supplements or food are needed to re-inoculate the gut. Fermented foods, such as yogurt, miso, and tempeh are food sources of probiotics. Prebiotics are nondigestible food ingredients that selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial microorganisms already in the colon. In other words, prebiotics feed probiotics. Prebiotics are available in many foods that contain a fiber called inulin, including artichokes, garlic, leeks, onion, chicory, tofu, and other soy products. Grains such as barley, flax, oats, and wheat are also good sources of prebiotics. Another good prebiotic source is a supplement called “fructo-oligosaccharide” or FOS.Repair. Help the lining of the GI tract repair itself by supplying key nutrients that can often be in short supply in a disease state, such as zinc, antioxidants (e.g. vitamins A, C, and E), fish oil, and the amino acid glutamine. Rebalance. Pay attention to lifestyle choices – sleep, exercise and stress can all affect the GI tract. For more information visit drhyman.com/uwcAdditional resources:“Is Your Digestive System Making You Sick, and Fat?”https://drhyman.com/blog/2010/05/20/is-your-digestive-system-making-you-sick/“How to Feed Your Gut”https://drhyman.com/blog/2018/04/13/how-to-feed-your-gut/“A New Approach to Autoimmune Disease”https://ultrawellnesscenter.com/2018/06/27/a-new-approach-to-autoimmune-disease/“Lab Spotlight: Testing for Food Sensitivities”https://ultrawellnesscenter.com/2019/09/27/lab-spotlight-testing-for-food-sensitivities/“The Wrong Gut Bugs Can Make You Fat and Sick (and How to Fix Them)”https://ultrawellnesscenter.com/2017/09/21/the-wrong-gut-bugs-can-make-you-fat-and-sick-and-how-to-fix-them/“Top 5 Diet Changes for Autoimmunity”https://ultrawellnesscenter.com/2017/06/30/top-5-diet-changes-for-autoimmunity/“Gut & Digestive Health” https://ultrawellnesscenter.com/2012/10/17/lesson-4-gut-digestive-health/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dr. Rachael Lovink is a licensed Naturopathic Physician who is incredibly passionate about helping others regain their health. She believes that, given the proper attention, any body will intuitively find it's way back into balance.   By virtue of her experience and training, Dr. Lovink has a toolkit she can employ to treat all kinds of conditions and illnesses. However, one of her greatest passions is in the treatment of anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar and other cognitive/psychiatric conditions through diet, lifestyle, and targeted supplementation.   You've probably heard the phrases “I have butterflies in my stomach,” “I have a gut feeling about this,” or “there's a pit in my stomach.” These aren't just cute phrases – this is your body and your brain trying to communicate something to you.   I am a firm believer in the gut-brain axis, or the relationship between digestive health and cognitive function, memory, depression, anxiety, and other mental and behavioral health issues – and that's just what I discuss what Dr. Lovink in this episode.   What Role Does Our Gut Play in Mood & Anxiety disorders?   Mood and anxiety disorders are more prevalent than ever. A report put out by the Government of Canada in 2016 indicated that 1/10 Canadians accessed healthcare for mental health (and I think it's a safe bet that more than 1/10 people experience mental health problems and don't know how to access support, or don't feel comfortable doing so).   Depression and anxiety are two of the most common mental health problems that people seek help for, with significant overlap between them; people who experience one often experience both.   Through a phenomenon called bidirectional communication, the brain influences the gut and the gut influences the brain. So in the same way anxiety can make your stomach feel a little iffy, inflammation in the gut can mess with your brain.   A closer look at the Gut, AKA our Second Brain   If we look at the gut from a top-down perspective, it starts in the mouth and ends at the rectum. In a structural sense, it is quite simple: a hollow tube. However, it is incredibly complex in its function.   It is one of the major barriers between our inside and outside world and, therefore, plays an incredibly important role in immunity. In fact, 70% of our immune system is “housed” in the gut! When we have intestinal inflammation (“fire in our gut”), our intestinal wall breaks down, which leads to break down of our blood brain barrier and inflammation in the brain.   So how do we fix gut problems?   Follow the 4 R's:   Remove the barriers to health. You can eat all the best foods in the world, but if you have an infection in your gut or chronic stress, all of that work won't get you very far. Replace systems or parts of the digestive tract that aren't working properly. Typically, that involves replacing digestive enzymes to help break down the food that you're eating. Reinoculate, which means using probiotics to put good, healthy bacteria back in your gut. But all probiotics aren't made equal and everyone doesn't need the same bacteria, so don't just grab the first probiotic you see on store shelves! Repair your gut lining. This involves things like targeted supplementation and diet changes to specifically address the structure of your gut.   Remember to listen to your gut – it will always tell you when things are off!     --   Resources: Learn more at http://www.drlovink.com/ (http://www.drlovink.com/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drrachaellovinknd/ Read: Clean: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself by Alejandro Junger and Amely Greeven   Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? Ep. 42: Gut Health 101 (Part 3 of 3) On today’s part 3 episode of the gut health miniseries, we’re talking about how to heal your gut by removing, repairing, and reinoculating. Topics: 1. Updates from Cassy [0:37] 2. Healing the gut part one: Remove [1:56] 3. Healing the gut part two: Repair [7:57] 4. Healing the gut part three: Reinoculate [14:03] 1. Updates from Cassy [0:37] Cassy Joy: And we’re back with episode 3 of the how to heal your gut miniseries. Thank you guys for joining me again. I hope you can hear me ok; I am recording this episode actually from the United Club in LAX airport {laughs} before I go any further into the content of today’s episode, I really just want to issue a quick heartfelt thank you for being so patient these fast few weeks. I know most of you probably follow along in some capacity, but if you’re new here or listening at some point in the future, I’ll get you up to speed quickly. The short story is, I just got married. I got married on October 24, 2015. I’ve been a little more relaxed with my schedule these past few weeks while we implemented some last minute planning activities, then especially while we were all together for the big celebration, we tried to relax a little bit. So it was a lovely affair, of which I will actually recap in the next podcast episode, so you’ll hear all about it. And I’m really humbled by all of your sweet notes and patience while we take a little longer than usual in publishing these shows and blog posts. So thank you so much. My husband, now husband and I are actually headed to New Zealand for our honeymoon, so I’ll be there for the next couple of weeks. So if you’re listening to this show when it comes out on Monday, that’s where we’re at! And if I’m able to steal away a couple of minutes I’ll be able to get up the wedding show, as well. If not it might be another bi-weekly show for the next couple of weeks, and I’ll get it up when we get back. 2. Healing the gut part one: Remove [1:56] Ok, onto the fun topic of gut health. So to recap in episode 1 we covered gut health 101 and why it matters so much. In episode 2 we covered gut flora and the intestinal barrier disruptors. So we talked about what is the gut and all of its parts, why is it important, how a sick gut has an impact on our overall health, and how it got sick in the first place. So let’s go ahead and close out this complex topic with a quick digestible, pun intended, list of ways you can actually heal your gut. So as we’ve done with previous two episodes in this series, I want to open with a quote from Hippocrates that will help set the tone for today’s discussion. The note is “Let food be thyroid medicine.” That’s probably one of his more famous quotes, and it really sets the tone for the content of what I want to talk about today. So I’ve broken up how to heal your gut into really 3 main parts. We’re going to talk about; and this language I’m sure you’ve seen elsewhere in the industry, but I really like it and I think it’s easy to understand, wrap our minds around, because this can be such a complex, overwhelming topic, and because it takes so long to heal, it can feel like it’s just a never-ending rabbit hole of options and avenues we can take to get there. So we’re breaking it up into 3 phases. So the first phase is remove, second phase is to repair, and the third phase is to reinoculate. Ok, so remove. We’re talking about removing the roadblocks. This includes moving out all of the toxins that we discussed in the earlier shows,

Probiotics have a very important role in our body, specifically in our digestive tract. When they are lacking for various reasons, like after taking antibiotics, other illnesses and diseases can ensue.   Probiotics generally refers to friendly bacteria or intestinal gut flora that belong in our digestive tract. This is a 30 foot tube from end to end and it contains about 100 trillion of these microorganisms, but this is only if the digestive tract is healthy.   What are the causes of a decrease in intestinal flora? There are many. One example would be when someone takes antibiotics that kill off the bad bacteria, but in doing so the good bacteria or flora are also killed off. Many times this allows fungus to grow because the good flora is not regulating it and the person will develop a yeast infection. You don't have to take prescription antibiotics for this to happen. There are antibiotics present in our food that can do the same harm. There is also chlorine in our water supply that can also kill off the flora in our gut and the end result is the development of disease.   Many functional and regenerative physicians believe that if a person is ill and they don't quite know where to start, they start with the gut. They use the 4 R Protocol, which stands for Remove, Replace, Reinoculate and Repair.   Remove stands for remove the offending agent. Remove offending foods or the offending bad bacteria or virus that is causing harm. Replace means replace the enzymes and acids and other nutrients that have been lost. Reinoculate means the good bacteria have to be replaced with probiotics. Repair they intestinal lining if there has been a lot of damage. This may involve using amino acids like glutamine or cold processed pure bovine colostrum products that help repair.   It is very important to replace these probiotics because it is the body's main immune defense. Some physicians will say that over 70% of our main defense is through the gut. We also rely on these probiotics to digest certain foods such as beans, legumes, and nuts and they usually provide the very last steps to provide the nutrients that we need.   The gut flora is also responsible for reducing inflammation. Patients with diverticulitis, Ulcerative Colitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome often have wiped out gut flora. Healthy bacteria secrete anti-inflammatory cytokines that keep bad bacteria at bay. When the healthy flora is gone then you can see these disorders appear. Once these flora are gone, Leaky Gut Syndrome can occur, which is mentioned in the gut health video. This means that holes have developed in the intestinal lining, which allows undigested food and other pathogens to leak into the body, which causes a whole host of other problems.   At Partell Pharmacy in Las Vegas, you can purchase VSL3, which helps treat Ulcerative Colitis. The sachets in VSL3 (the living shield) are packed with 450 billion probiotics. There are also other pharmaceutical grade probiotics available at their compounding pharmacy. It is important to look at the label when purchasing probiotics. You will find many that have 5 or 10 billion units of probiotics a day and that is why they are so inexpensive. The better quality products will contain more probiotics. Robert suggests taking at least 100 billion probiotics a day and more if you are ill or during allergy season. Why during allergy season? If we reduce inflammation in the gut by taking probiotics, we most likely can reduce inflammation in the entire body.   You can actually have your probiotic flora checked so you know what your gut status is. A Functional and Rejuvenative Physician will know the proper tests to order.   Diet is very important when considering your gut health. You can increase your healthy gut flora by eating lacto fermented foods like sauerkraut and kim chi and some yogurts rich in acidophilus. Avoid sugars and starch in the diet because yeasts and other bad flora can feed off of these types of foods.   by Robert Seik, PharmD
